Opening with a train journey, the film shows views from the train as it passes through a village and crosses a bridge. The camera is next on a boat, showing rapids, the jungle, locals on a raft and members of the expedition fording the stream. This is followed by scenes of the local industries. Trip Through North Borneo 1907
Opening with a train journey, the film shows views from the train as it passes through a village and crosses a bridge. The camera is next on a boat, showing rapids, the jungle, locals on a raft and members of the expedition fording the stream. This is followed by scenes of the local industries. Locals quarry for manganese ore, gather rubber from a tree (watched by Europeans) and pick and sort tobacco leaves from the fields. Further scenes reveal locals at a trading post and performing for the camera. Next, Chinese convicts collect their food, before a sequence showing a European supervising two locals as they chop a sago palm tree. Once felled, the trunk is sawed off and buffaloes (ridden by locals) haul the logs off screen. Local boys take part in a swimming race - diving off a gangway, watched by a European figure rowing alongside - before the film concludes with further shots of the buffaloes, driven into, and crossing, the water.

Travel video about destination Borneo in Malaysia.
Borneo is the third largest island in the world and the northern region that comprises Sarawak and Sabah has been part of the Malaysian Federation since 1963. Bako National Park is not to be missed. In this short documentary, I chronicle my time there chasing down Proboscis monkeys and anything else I can find in this mystical, wild locale.
Mischievous macaques, wandering wild boar and large leaping primates catapulting themselves through the canopy are all a part of this amazing addition to Travel Geek: Documentary North Borneo.

If the ride to the Padas River to go white water rafting is this fun, imagine how amazing the rapids themselves are!
Studying the history of the railroad, the terrain through which it was created and even a bit of humor about the lineage of it's unregulated, smog-belching diesel engines, this trip through Borneo's autonomous state of Sabah is one of the best ways to see the contrasting realities -- old and new, untouched and ruined -- for the wild, tropical region.

Formally the British capital of British North Borneo, Sandakan is a city steeped in history, with a character shaped by the regions extraordinary natural and cultural diversity.
Sandakan's very name will forever be associated with one of the darkest chapters of World War Two.
However visitors today will discover a vibrant, forward-looking city.

Borneo Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Borneo in Malaysia.
Borneo is the third largest island in the world and the northern region that comprises Sarawak and Sabah has been part of the Malaysian Federation since 1963. A hidden paradise, mysterious and unknown. We begin our journey in Sarawak in the north west of the island, in the capital, Kuching. The Sarawak River divides the city in two and on one of the banks are the buildings of Kampung Boyan, an old water town. Situated on a hill is Fort Margarita that dates back to 1841. We visit a village of the Bidayum Tribe and to the border of the South Indonesian section of the island. The Bidayum live in traditional long houses and survive from agriculture and river fishing. The long houses measure up to a hundred and fifty metres in length and are inhabited by several families. Between Sarawak and Sabah is the tiny sultanate of Brunei Darussalm whose capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, looks like something from an exotic fantasy. In the north east of Sabah is the majestic Mount Kinabalu, at more than thirteen thousand feet above sea level the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Borneo is a country of natural wonder, full of adventure. A land of head hunters, mysterious cultures and exotic wildlife and an island far off the main tourist trail. A veritable hidden paradise set amid the South China Sea.

Travel Geek Short: The North Borneo Railway
If the ride to the Padas River to go white water rafting is this fun, imagine how amazing the rapids themselves are!
Studying the history of the railroad, the terrain through which it was created and even a bit of humor about the lineage of it's unregulated, smog-belching diesel engines, this trip through Borneo's autonomous state of Sabah is one of the best ways to see the contrasting realities -- old and new, untouched and ruined -- for the wild, tropical region.

The splendour of the mosque of Sultan Omar Ali Saiffudin is a captivating sight. This Islamic landmark is also a symbol of great wealth and was built in 1958 and was named after the father of the present sultan. Snow white Italian Carrara marble was used as building material, with granite from Shanghai. It commemorates the founder of modern Brunei.
On a classic longboat powered by outboard motor, we travel on the Brunei River and are soon surrounded by mangrove brush. Tropical thunderstorms and monsoon rain create dense vegetation and the ensuing humidity produces lush flora.
At the junction of two muddy-grey waterways of the Brunei River is an historic location, Kampung Ayer, a water village. Each building and adjoining pathway is built on posts yet there is both an electricity and drinking water supply. Plants decorate the terraces, and TV aerials are everywhere and it has a population of around thirty thousand.
Brunei is a land that has almost lost its history while moving into modern times. It is a country that has grown amazingly wealthy since its gas has hissed and its oil has spluttered from deep below the ground. Liquid gold - Allah be praised!

Food market - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (formerly North Borneo)
Sabah used to be known as North Borneo. Like most places in this shrinking world it is becoming more and more internationalised. But at least in the central market in Kota Kinabalu a good deal of the local culture is still visible in the every day food and way of life. As in many of the cities around the China Sea, it is very hot, yet few people have fridges, and few have enough money to buy food in advance, so the amounts sold to individual customers by the traders in the market are often very small: just enough for the next meal.
