Thimphu also in the past spelled as Thimpu, is the capital and largest city of Bhutan. It is situated in the western central part of Bhutan and the surrounding valley is one of Bhutan's dzongkhags, the Thimphu District. The city became the capital of Bhutan in 1961.
As of 2005 it had a population of 79,185, with 98,676 people living in the entire Thimphu district.
The city is spread out longitudinally in a north-south direction on the west bank of the valley formed by the Wang Chuu, also known as the Thimphu Chuu River. Thimphu is located at 27°28′00″N 89°38′30″ECoordinates: 27°28′00″N 89°38′30″E and is spread over an altitudinal range between 2,248 metres (7,375 ft) and 2,648 metres (8,688 ft). Unusually for a capital city, Thimphu is not served by an airport, but relies on the airport at Paro, connected by road some 54 kilometres (34 mi) away.
Thimphu, as the political and economic center of Bhutan, has a dominant agricultural and livestock base, which contributes to 45% of the country's GNP. Tourism, though a contributor to the economy, is strictly regulated, maintaining a balance between the traditional, development and modernization. Thimphu contains most of the important political buildings in Bhutan, including the National Assembly of the newly formed parliamentary democracy and Dechencholing Palace, the official residence of the King, located to the north of the city. As a metropolis and capital city, Thimphu is coordinated by the "Thimphu Structure Plan", an Urban Development Plan which evolved in 1998 with the objective of protecting the fragile ecology of the valley. This development is ongoing with financial assistance from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
The culture of Bhutan is fully reflected in Thimphu in respect of literature, religion, customs, and national dress code, the monastic practices of the monasteries, music, dance, literature and in the media. Tsechu festival is an important festival when mask dances, popularly known as Cham dances, are performed in the courtyards of the Tashichhoe Dzong in Thimphu. It is a four-day festival held every year during Autumn (September/October), on dates corresponding to the Bhutanese calendar.

The Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar situated in the centre of Thimpu town is your window of the art and craft of this Himalayan kingdom. It a mile-long row of shops made of bamboo and other eco-friendly material. The shops number almost 100 and almost all shopkeepers are women with the men folk helping them with the more strenuous duties.
The beauty of the products lies in their original craftsmanship and in their indigenousness. The shops were allotted to these womenfolk on the condition that they would only sell products which were produced in Bhutan and not import products from other countries.
The ladies are helpful, courteous and very obliging while you browse through their wares. If you start from one end, it will definitely take you a little more than an hour to window-shop till the end of the road.

Kuzuzangpo La - A warm greetings from Bhutan.
Often called the "Crown Jewel of the Himalayas," the tiny kingdom of Bhutan is the last independent country in the region to support Buddhism as the official state religion. The independence of the country is partly looked after by the ice-cold snow capped mountains in the north and dense jungle in the south that has proved to be the natural barriers for protecting the country from the outside forces for centuries and centuries. The heart of the country is blessed with marvelous maze of endless valleys with magnificent landscape where Bhutanese have cautiously kept alive the rich legacy of traditional values and religious customs.
The kingdom is nestled in the eastern Himalayas, bordering Tibet to the north and India to the south with an aerial distance 350 Km from east to west and around 150 Km from north to south. The total area of the country is 38,394 Sq Km with a population barely estimated to be 700,000.
With a unique development philosophy based on the guiding principles of Gross National Happiness there are tremendous signs of accomplishment throughout the country. Town and villages are boosting to meet the needs of all Bhutanese. Monasteries, Temples and Fortress are carefully repaired and maintained as needed, providing a welcome sanctuary for monks, nuns and Bhutanese public to connect with their long religious heritage.
Between the mountain villages, the beautiful landscapes are carefully managed to ensure biodiversity for a wide range of flora and fauna.

Bhutan (/buːˈtɑːn/; Dzongkha འབྲུག་ཡུལ Dru Ü, IPA: [ʈʂɦu yː]), officially the Kingdom of Bhutan, is a landlocked country in South Asia at the eastern end of the Himalayas. It is bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by India. To the west, it is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim, while farther south it is separated from Bangladesh by the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal. Bhutan's capital and largest city is Thimphu.
Bhutan existed as a patchwork of minor warring fiefs until the early 17th century. At that time the lama and military leader Ngawang Namgyal, the first Zhabdrung Rinpoche, who was fleeing religious persecution in Tibet, unified the area and cultivated a distinct Bhutanese identity. In the early 20th century, Bhutan came into contact with the British Empire and retained strong bilateral relations with India upon its independence. In 2006, based on a global survey, Business Week rated Bhutan the happiest country in Asia and the eighth-happiest in the world.

South Asia or Southern Asia is a term used to represent the southern region of the Asian continent, which comprises the sub-Himalayan SAARC countries and, for some authorities, adjoining countries to the west and east. Topographically, it is dominated by the Indian Plate, which rises above sea level as Nepal and northern parts of India situated south of the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. South Asia is bounded on the south by the Indian Ocean and on land (clockwise, from west) by West Asia, Central Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. Thimphu contains most of the important political buildings in Bhutan, including the National Assembly of the newly formed parliamentary democracy and Dechencholing Palace, the official residence of the King, located to the north of the city. As a metropolis and capital city, Thimphu is coordinated by the "Thimphu Structure Plan", an Urban Development Plan which evolved in 1998 with the objective of protecting the fragile ecology of the valley. This development is ongoing with financial assistance from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
The culture of Bhutan is fully reflected in Thimphu in respect of literature, religion, customs, and national dress code, the monastic practices of the monasteries, music, dance, literature and in the media. The Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar situated in the centre of Thimpu town is your window of the art and craft of this Himalayan kingdom. It a mile-long row of shops made of bamboo and other eco-friendly material. The shops number almost 100 and almost all shopkeepers are women with the men folk helping them with the more strenuous duties.
The beauty of the products lies in their original craftsmanship and in their indigenousness. The shops were allotted to these womenfolk on the condition that they would only sell products which were produced in Bhutan and not import products from other countries.
The ladies are helpful, courteous and very obliging while you browse through their wares. If you start from one end, it will definitely take you a little more than an hour to window-shop till the end of the road.

Often called the "Crown Jewel of the Himalayas," the tiny kingdom of Bhutan is the last independent country in the region to support Buddhism as the official state religion. The independence of the country is partly looked after by the ice-cold snow capped mountains in the north and dense jungle in the south that has proved to be the natural barriers for protecting the country from the outside forces for centuries and centuries. The heart of the country is blessed with marvelous maze of endless valleys with magnificent landscape where Bhutanese have cautiously kept alive the rich legacy of traditional values and religious customs.
The kingdom is nestled in the eastern Himalayas, bordering Tibet to the north and India to the south with an aerial distance 350 Km from east to west and around 150 Km from north to south. The total area of the country is 38,394 Sq Km with a population barely estimated to be 700,000.
With a unique development philosophy based on the guiding principles of Gross National Happiness there are tremendous signs of accomplishment throughout the country. Town and villages are boosting to meet the needs of all Bhutanese. Monasteries, Temples and Fortress are carefully repaired and maintained as needed, providing a welcome sanctuary for monks, nuns and Bhutanese public to connect with their long religious heritage.
Between the mountain villages, the beautiful landscapes are carefully managed to ensure biodiversity for a wide range of flora and fauna.

Ambient Cafe - To begin with, we headed to Ambient Cafe, one of the Western style cafes in the heart of Thimphu. They also roast their own coffee - I thought their coffee was excellent. Tibet Kitchen - For lunch we went to Tibet Kitchen restaurant in Thimphu to eat Tibetan food. The food was amazing, and I especially enjoyed the Sichuan pepper and chili sauce to garnish my dishes. Thai Food - For dinner we went to a Thai restaurant in Thimphu. To be honest the Thai food was pretty bad, but it is pretty amazing that you can even get Thai food in Thimphu. On Day 2 in Thimphu, Bhutan, we hung around town and did some eating.
Ambient Cafe - To begin with, we headed to Ambient Cafe, one of the Western style cafes in the heart of Thimphu. They also roast their own coffee - I thought their coffee was excellent.
Tibet Kitchen - For lunch we went to Tibet Kitchen restaurant in Thimphu to eat Tibetan food. The food was amazing, and I especially enjoyed the Sichuan pepper and chili sauce to garnish my dishes.
Thai Food - For dinner we went to a Thai restaurant in Thimphu. To be honest the Thai food was pretty bad, but it is pretty amazing that you can even get Thai food in Thimphu. I would recommend sticking with local Bhutanese, Indian, and Tibetan food when you’re in Bhutan.

Bhutan is a small country in the Himalayas between the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and India.
Besides the stunning natural scenery, the enduring image of the country for most visitors is the strong sense of culture and tradition that binds the kingdom and clearly distinguishes it from its larger neighbours. Bhutan is the only Vajrayana Buddhist nation in the world, and the profound teachings of this tradition remain well preserved and exert a strong influence in all aspects of life. Due to its pristine environment and harmonious society, the tiny Kingdom of Bhutan has been called "The Last Shangrila."

The majority of tourists do "cultural tours" where they visit important destinations. Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Wangdue, and Jakar are popular destinations. Further afield, the unexplored region of Zhemgang (birders paradise, excellent wildlife viewing) and Eastern Bhutan have just been opened up to tourism. If you are an adventurist and want to explore the unexplored the east of Bhutan is the place for you. This unique and yet untouched part of the country offers the ultimate experience.
Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest), Paro. This is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world, and Guru Rinpoche visited here in the 8th century on his second visit to Bhutan. It is the most recognized and visited monument in Bhutan. It is believed that he arrived on the back of a winged tigress, hence the name, Tigers Nest. The temple is built on a 1,200 meter cliff and was built in 1692. The hike up to the Tiger's Nest can be very strenuous and you can rent a horse to bring up the mountain for about USD $10. The horse ride is a one-way trip (this is recommended if you are not very fit and may face altitude sickness) and you have to make your way down the mountain by foot.
For independent travelers, taxis can be arranged to reach Taktsang Monastery. As on May, 2014, a reserved small car will cost you Nu 500 for a round trip and takes about 20 minutes one way. The car will drop you at the site and then will come to pick you up at a later fixed time.
You can visit Kyichu Lhakhang Monastery on your way to Taktsang.
Hundreds of monasteries dot the landscape in some of the most pristine and remote areas.
Kurje Lhakhang, Jakar. A temple built around a cave with a body print of Guru Rinpoche embedded in the wall. Guru Rinpoche practiced meditation here on his first visit to Bhutan and as such it is the earliest Buddhist relic in the country.
Dzongs/Fortresses
===============
Tashichho Dzong is a Buddhist monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the city of Thimpu in Bhutan, on the western bank of the Wang Chu. It has traditionally been the seat of the Druk Desi (or "Dharma Raja"), the head of Bhutan's civil government, an office which has been combined with the kingship since the creation of the monarchy in 1907, and summer capital of the country.[1] The main structure of the whitewashed building is two-storied with three-storied towers at each of the four corners topped by triple-tiered golden roofs. There is also a large central tower or utse. Built in 1216, Semtokha Dzong in the Thimphu Valley was the first dzong built in the country.
The dzongs are ancient fortresses that now serve as the civil and monastic administration headquarters of each district. Apart from the architecture, which in itself makes a dzong worth visiting, they also hold many art treasures.
Trekking
=========
Trekking is also extremely popular. The Druk path is the most commonly trekked from Paro, to the capital Thimphu. However, many other more impressive treks are available, see the complete list below. The Jomolhari, and Laya Gasa trek are also very popular and the Snowman Trek is reported to be one of the toughest treks in the world, taking a approximately 30 days. The recommended season for this trek is mid-June to mid-October.

Bhutan Food and Travel Guide - Day 1: My wife and I flew from Bangkok to Paro, Bhutan on Druk Air. We landed in Paro, and it was about an hour taxi ride to get to Thimphu, which is the largest city in Bhutan, and where we were going to base ourselves.
After getting settled into the My Bhutan house, we headed out to the Thimphu Farmers Market, a local produce market.
Bhutanese food lunch at Kalden Restaurant - For my first ever Bhutanese food meal, we headed over to Kalden Restaurant, a local restaurant in Thimphu. We ordered ema-datse, which is the Bhutanese food national dish of chilies and cheese, plus a number of other cheese dishes, which we ate over rice. It was an amazing first Bhutanese meal.
Indian vegetarian food dinner at New Grand Restaurant - We ordered a spread of dishes including aloo ghobi, and one of my personal favorite, chili paneer.
It was an amazing first day, flying from Bangkok to Paro, Bhutan, and then on to Thimphu. I was blown away by my first Bhutanese food meal!

On the northern edge of the city on the banks of the Wang River is the Pangri Zampa Temple, two impressive white buildings in the centre of a monastery. A school of astrology is located behind an unusually long prayer wall of carved stones surrounded by a forest of cypress trees. The road to Punakha travels across the Dochula Pass from the top of which more than a hundred chortens appear in the mist. A chorten is a container for religious offerings that symbolize Buddha’s consciousness in the Himalayan countries, and are therefore sacred. As quickly as it arrives, the fog vanishes, and the Druk Wangyal Ihakhang Temple suddenly appears out of nowhere. At the end of a valley, about fifteen kilometres from Paro, and located on a hill, is the once proud Drukgyal Dzong Fortress. At its foot, the beautiful village of Tsento nestling against protective rocks and surrounded by fertile fields which are brown or green according to the season of the year. Bhutan is an amazing country has retained its ancient traditions, religious secrets and cultural identity.
