Amerigo Vespucci
The biography of Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512), the Italian explorer whose discoveries led to the continent of America being named after him. The first of Amerigo's voyages has been disputed since he first described it, because it meant that he had reached the mainland of America before Columbus. How America Got Its Name - Another insightful video clip from the Drive Thru History series and my buddies at http://www.ColdWaterMedia.com
While great works of art and science were being produced in Florence, Italy, its most famous explorer and mapmaker, Amerigo Vespucci, was commissioned by the king and queen of Spain to further investigate the new lands discovered by Christopher Columbus.
Between 1499 and 1502, Vespucci discovered the land mass we now call South America. He was convinced this land was part of a new continent, a bold contention at a time when other European explorers crossing the Atlantic Ocean thought they were reaching Asia. So it is Amerigo Vespucci that is generally given the credit for figuring out Columbus had found a whole new world and not India and China.
In 1507, Martin Waldseemuller produced a world map on which he named the new continent "America." But why America? Well, Waldseemuller took Amerigo Vespucci's first name and Latinized it to "Americus" because at the time Latin was the universal language for European maps. But Americus is a man's name, and Mr. Waldseemuller as a highly-trained map-making professional knew that continents, like ships, are always female. So Waldseemuller took it upon himself to feminize "Americus" to "America," and the rest is history.

The island contains many animals of various sorts, and much water in swamps, and seeing that it offered no profit whatever, we departed and went to another island. We found that this other island was inhabited by very tall people. We landed to see whether there was any fresh water, and not thinking it was inhabited, as we had not seen anyone, we came upon very large footprints in the sand, as we were walking along the beach. We judged that if the other measurements were in proportion to those of their feet, they must be very tall. Going in search, we came into a road which led inland. There were nine of us. Judging that there could not be many inhabitants, as the island was small, we walked over it to see what sort of people they were. When we had gone about a league we saw five huts, which appeared to be uninhabited, in a valley, and we went to them. But we only found five women, two old, and three children of such lofty stature that, for the wonder of the thing, we wanted to keep them. When they saw us they were so frightened that they had not the power to run away. The two old women began to invite us with words, and to set before us many things, and took us into a hut. They were taller than a large man who may well be tall, such as was Francesco degli Albizi, but better proportioned. Our intention was to take the young girls by force, and to bring them to Castille as a wonderful thing. While we were forming this design there entered by the door of the hut as many as thirty-six men, much bigger than the women, and so well made that it was a rare thing to behold them. They, in like manner, put us into such a state of perturbation that we rather wished we were on board, than having dealings with such people. They carried very large bows and arrows, and great clubs with knobs. They talked among themselves in a tone as if they wished to destroy us. Seeing ourselves in such danger, we made various suggestions one to another. Some proposed that we should attack them in the hut, and others said that it would be better to do so outside, while others advised that we should not take any action until we saw what the natives were going to do. We at last agreed to go out of the hut, and walk away in the direction of the ships as if nothing had happened, and this we did. Having taken our route to return to the ships, they also came along behind us at a distance of about a stone's throw, talking among themselves. I believe they had not less fear of us than we of them; for sometimes we stopped to rest, and they did so also without coming nearer. At last we came to the beach, where the boats where waiting for us. We got in, and, when we were some way from the shore, the natives rushed down and shot many arrows; but we then had little fear of them. We replied with two bombard-shots, more to frighten them than to do them harm. They all fled into the woods, and so we took leave of them, thankful to escape after a dangerous adventure. They all went naked like the others. We called this island the Island of the Giants, by reason of their stature.

Kendra: Honestly CiCi, they all seem pretty boring to me.
CiCi: No way, I think Amerigo Vespucci was pretty cool.
Kendra: Do you even know the definition of cool CiCi?
(Amerigo pops up)
Vespucci: Yes, she does.
CiCi: AMERIGO?
Kendra: Who are you?
Vespucci: Who am I?
Who am I? I’ll tell you who.
Through song.
(“Sugar” karaoke plays)
Vespucci:
The names Vespucci,
Amerigo.
Once you say it, just say it and then you’ll know.
That I founded,
America.
No, not Columbus, he thought it was India.
I was born in 1451
I started sailing when I was young.
And I am from Italy…
Yeah, Florence.
I-
Kendra: I don’t even like this song.
CiCi: What do you mean you don’t like this song?
Kendra: I don’t know… I’m kinda more into rap, like Nicki Minaj.
Vespucci: Who is Nicki Minaj?
Kendra: Oh you know! The one with the Anacondas?
Vespucci: Anacondas?
Okay… well give me the “Nicki Minaj” beat CiCi.
CiCi: Okay.
(“Only” Nicki Minaj karaoke)
Vespucci:
Oh okay… I can handle this.
Yo.
I never stayed home,
But I was home schooled.
Not by dad, my uncle.
I’m the 3rd son in my family who were close to the Medici’s.
My first job, a mission, made me like exploration.
Yeah, it was set up, by my uncle with fascination.
Kendra: Wait a second.
CiCi: Kendra!!
Kendra: What? I just don’t understand what he’s saying. Who are the Medici’s and why does it matter that your family was so close to them?
Vespucci: (sigh) They were the ruling family of Italy in the 1400’s to 1737.
Kendra: Oh well look at you Mr. Popularity.
Vespucci: Yeah, I only knew the most famous people of my time. No big deal.
Kendra: Yeah now back to the song.
Vespucci: Eh… I can’t really get back into the same feel I was just in. Do you happen to have any other request?
CiCi: Oh yes please! Give me some country music.
Kendra: Country?!
Vespucci: Huh. Who would’ve thought.
CiCi: What? Just because I’m black doesn’t mean I can’t love country.
Vespucci: Fine, I’ll give you some country… play that beat.
CiCi: Yes!!!
(“Love Story” Taylor Swift)
Kendra: Ugh ! You know Taylor Swift isn’t even considered a country singer anymore.
CiCi: Yeah but her old songs are still country to me.
Vespucci: Eh-hem. Thank you.
I outfitted my own first voyage,
Explored the North coast of S. America, to well beyond… the mouth of the amazon
I gave the name to the “Gulf of Ganges”
Made improvements on navigational techniques
And that’s not all…
I predicted the earth’s circumference to within 50 miles
Kendra: Okay if your gonna sing…. Country (ew), then atleast sing it right.
Vespucci: Oh I’m sorry do you think you can do better?
Kendra: No but I’m learning nothing from this.
Vespucci: Learning nothing? Have you not heard my lyrics?
Kendra: Yes, I have actually. You said that you were homeschooled by your Uncle, you’re close to the royal Medici family in Italy, you were the one who said America was a new country instead of India, you’re the 3rd son in your family, you explored many places including the North coast of South America, (“Many hours later”) you gave the name to the Gulf of Ganges, made improvements on navigational techniques and predicted the earth’s circumference to within 50 miles. (deep breath) Wow I guess you did do a lot.
You know Amerigo… you’re pretty cool.
CiCi: Preach it.
Vespucci: My work here is done.
(Vespucci leaves)
Kendra: Wait no!!!
(pause)
Kendra: CiCi, I was this close to getting his autograph.
CiCi: No you weren’t.
Kendra: Yes, I was! He’s so cool… no wonder he’s the most famous guy…
CiCi: I know right.
Kendra: CiCi, I wanna be him.
CiCi: Okay…

These people, when they saw us, came to us with much familiarity, as if we had formed friendship with them. Walking with them on the beach and talking, being desirous of drinking fresh water, they made signs that they had none, and offered their herb and powder; from which we concluded that the island was ill-provided with water, and that they kept this herb in their mouths to keep off thirst. We walked over the island for a day and a half, without finding a spring of water, and we saw that the water they drank was what had fallen during the night on certain leaves which looked like ass's ears, and held the water, and of this they drank. It was excellent water; and these leaves are not found in many places. They had no kind of meat and no roots, as on the mainland. They were sustained by fish caught in the sea, of which they had great abundance, and they were very good fishermen. They gave us many turtles, and many large and excellent fish. Their women did not have the herb in their mouths like the men, but they all carried a gourd with water, from which they drank. They have no villages nor houses, but merely live under bowers of leaves, which shade them from the sun, though not from the rain. But I believe that it seldom rains on that island. When they are fishing out at sea they all have a very large leaf, and of such width that it forms a shade. As the sun rises, so they raise the leaf, and thus they protect themselves from the sun.

I am a professional caricature artist (or caricaturist, as it is a word now!). I have been drawing since I know myself, met many of the biggest contemporary artists while traveling the world with my paper, pencils, and seemingly-always-dry sharpies.
I'm not the fastest, nor the best caricaturist in the world. But at least I'm trying, ha. And if you think it would be worth it, you can order a personalised caricature from me, drawn after your photo. You can order it online at the link below... and above. And everywhere. I'm putting links all over the place: http://getaportrait.org/order
Also, if you have a question for me, you can ask me using the Contact form from my website. Feedback and hate mail are always welcome.
Thanks for watching! I hope I'm entertaining!

Interview with Dr. Evan Jones, from The Cabot Research Project, Bristol University, discusses the history of John Cabot and others travelling across the Atlantic where they began the process of opening America up to European exploitation: Roman coins and sword found in Newfoundland; so who found America first? Historians claim they have found evidence Romans arrived in North America, more than a thousand years before Christopher Columbus set foot on the continent. Various stories; enslavement and illnesses causing genocide to native Americans after Europeans turned up; Christopher Columbus; history of Merchant Venturers in Bristol; The Hanseatic League; Merchant Adventurers; ship building in Bristol; TTIP and modern global capitalism; Alwyn Ruddock and documents she wanted to hold on to about John Cabot; Prester John and fake letter put out by Vatican – explorers gripped by these stories for centuries; Amerigo Vespucci. Dr Evan Jones’ Cabot Project …

Cabot turned in 1494 or 1495 to England – to the Italian community in London, to the merchants of the port of Bristol, where he settled with his family, and to the king, Henry VII. His scheme was to reach Asia by sailing west across the north Atlantic. He estimated that this would be shorter and quicker than Columbus' southerly route. Cabot was trying to go one better.
In England, Cabot received the backing he had been refused in Spain and Portugal. Italian bankers based in London agreed to invest in his scheme. So did the merchants of Bristol. They had sponsored probes into the north Atlantic from the early 1480s, looking for possible trading opportunities. Some historians think that Bristol mariners might even have reached Newfoundland and Labrador even before Cabot arrived on the scene.

Dr. Evan Jones is Senior Lecturer in Economic and Social History with the Department of Historical Studies of The University of Bristol.
Dr. Jones has done extensive research on Bristol's fifteenth-sixteenth century voyages of discovery. He has written four articles in this field and is now running a small research project, entitled The Cabot Project, to push forward the research. He is a specialist in late medieval -early modern maritime history, particularly in relation to Bristol.
For the Atlantic Conference, Dr. Jones will be discussing his work to recover and add to the work of Dr Alwyn Ruddock. Dr. Ruddock was a former reader in history at the University of London, and the world expert on John Cabot’s discovery voyages from Bristol to North America (1496-98). What she was said to have found out about these voyages looked set to re-write the history of the European discovery of America. Ever the perfectionist, when Ruddock passed away, her will stipulated that her research of four decades be destroyed.
"Dr Ruddock intended to reveal that while Cabot was sailing south down the coast of America his chief supporter, Fra Giovanni, was establishing a religious colony in Newfoundland. Having disembarked from his ship, the Dominus Nobiscum, Fra Giovanni apparently established a settlement and built a church. This church, the first to be built in North America, was named after the Augustinian church of San Giovanni a Carbonara in Naples.
Dr. Jones work in uncovering the heretofore unknown documents and telling the story to the world colors the story of the early discovery of North America in an entirely new light and, in my opinion, shows that there was knowledge of the "New Founde Lande" for many years.
