The Sacred Relic of the tooth of Buddha (Pali danta dhātuya) is venerated in Sri Lanka as a cetiya "relic" of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
According to Sri Lankan legends, when the Buddha died in 543 BCE, his body was cremated in a sandalwood pyre at Kushinagar and his left canine tooth was retrieved from the funeral pyre by his disciple, Khema. Khema then gave it to King Brahmadatte for veneration. It became a royal possession in Brahmadatte's country and was kept in the city of Dantapuri (modern Puri, Odisha).
A belief grew that whoever possessed the tooth relic had a divine right to rule that land. The Dāṭhāvaṃsa recounts the tale of a war fought over the relic 800 years later between Guhasiva of the republic of Kalinga and a king named Pandu.
Legend states the Abhayagiri vihāra was first appointed custodianship of the relic when it was brought to the island after the conflict in Kalinga. As time went on, the land was threatened with foreign invasions; at one time, the king of Bago, Burma offered the Portuguese £50,000 as a ransom of the tooth; and the seat of the kingdom was moved from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa, then to Dambadeniya and other cities. Upon each change of capital, a new palace was built to enshrine the relic. Finally, it was brought to Kandy where it is at present, in the Temple of the Tooth.
Sri Lanka (/sriːˈlɑːŋkə, -ˈlæŋkə/ or i/ʃriː-/;Sinhalese - ශ්රී ලංකාව, Tamil Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known from the beginning of British colonial rule until 1972 as Ceylon (/sᵻˈlɒnˌ seɪ-ˌ siː-/), is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.
Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.
A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.
Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple.
Bhikkhus of the two chapters of Malwatte and Asgiriya conduct daily worship in the inner chamber of the temple. Rituals are performed three times daily: at dawn, at noon and in the evenings. On Wednesdays there is a symbolic bathing of the relic with an herbal preparation made from scented water and fragrant flowers called Nanumura Mangallaya. This holy water is believed to contain healing powers and is distributed among those present.
The temple sustained damage from bombings by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1998 but was fully restored each time.
A tooth (plural teeth) is a small, calcified, whitish structure found in the jaws (or mouths) of many vertebrates and used to break down food. Some animals, particularly carnivores, also use teeth for hunting or for defensive purposes. The roots of teeth are covered by gums. Teeth are not made of bone, but rather of multiple tissues of varying density and hardness. The cellular tissues that ultimately become teeth originate from the embryonic germ layer, the ectoderm.
The general structure of teeth is similar across the vertebrates, although there is considerable variation in their form and position. The teeth of mammals have deep roots, and this pattern is also found in some fish, and in crocodilians. In most teleost fish, however, the teeth are attached to the outer surface of the bone, while in lizards they are attached to the inner surface of the jaw by one side. In cartilaginous fish, such as sharks, the teeth are attached by tough ligaments to the hoops of cartilage that form the jaw.
These two teeth of Shakyamuni Buddha are nearly 3 inches long, and have been growing in size since the time the Buddha entered Nirvana about 3000 years ago. These are the only known teeth relics of the Buddha in the United States, and are part of a collection of over 10000 relics that were donated to Lu Mountain Temple, in Rosemead, CA, earlier in 2013. For more information, please visit: www.MahaStupa.project This website has information about the relics, and also describes the vision to build a stupa to enshrine the relics, somewhere in Southern California, which will be a major monument to Mahayana Buddhism.

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is a Buddhist temple based on the Tang dynasty (618–907) architectural style. The Buddhist say they walk as if kissing the earth, for their peace and happiness comes from self discovery and within. The Tang timberwork unified art and structural formation, pillars and girders combined perfectly for strength and aesthetics. They looked simple, but grand with concise bright colors.
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the three big attractions in Kandy (Kandy Lake and Botanical Gardens are the other two). We went on a Sunday morning and as you can see from the video, it was very very very crowded. Lots of people. You don't get to see the tooth. The video is a brief walk through the temple and doesn't show the museum (cameras weren't allowed there).

My impressions from beautiful Esala Perahera in Kandy, Sri Lanka, to worship the Buddha tooth relic Sri Dalada Maligawa. Hundreds of beautiful elephants and thousands of dancers take part, the festival takes one week and finishes with an even larger march with a lot of people. It took very long but I really loved it and was very fascinated.
Randoli Perahara (Randoli Procession) This could be seen only with the procession of the Sacred Tooth Relic and parade the streets for whole five days which is a tradition. In the days of the Kings the Chief Queens of the Kings paraded in this procession in Palanquins. As the participation of the Queens was not proper to the procession of the Sacred Tooth Relic they were stopped but a palanquin is taken in the procession as an honour to the Queen. Today it is taken as the last item of the procession. The four Devalas carry their own decorated palanquins with religious articles of the Devales. Although palanquins are carried the honour they receive is no less.
Kumbal Perahera (Kumbal Procession) The first procession of the Sacred Tooth Relic starts with the Kumbal Perahera. This is the first Kumbal Perahera shown to the infants to drive away Evil Spells and Ill will. It is a tradition that the procession parades the streets of Kandy for five days. But the Kumbal Perahera is popular and remains as an unfinished procession or a semi procession. The reason is that Nilames do not walk in this procession. But the Drummers and Tuskers take part without any ceremonial costumes.
