President Obama joins host Xi Jinping at bilateral dinner
US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping met on Tuesday for an informal dinner during the first part of a two-day summit intended to smooth relations between the world's largest economies.
The two leaders and their advisers gathered in Zhongnanhai, an imperial garden in central Beijing that serves as the headquarters of the Chinese government, and called for a productive meeting.
Obama said when the US and China cooperate, the "world benefits" added that he hopes to take the relationship "to a new level."
The meeting, held on the heels of an Asia-Pacific regional summit, is the first between the two men since Obama hosted Xi at the Sunnylands retreat in California in June last year.
Although that meeting was hailed as a first step toward building a "new model" of relations between the countries, bilateral ties quickly soured.
Since then, the two powers have repeatedly tangled over cyberspying, trade issues and China's aggressive military activities in the East and South China seas.
Obama has made it clear he now hopes to put the past behind and get the relationship back on a more positive course.

President Xi Jinping delivers policy speech in Seattle 习主席在西雅图就中美关系发表演讲
(Speech begins at 20:28 on the timeline)
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Friends,
In our Sunnylands meeting in 2013, President Obama and I reached the important agreement to jointly build a new model of major-country relationship between the two countries. This was a major, strategic choice we made together on the basis of historical experience, our respective national conditions and the prevailing trend of the world.
Over the past two years and more, the two sides have acted in accordance with the agreement, steadily moved forward bilateral coordination and cooperation in various fields and made important progress. We worked hand in hand to cope with the aftermath of the international financial crisis and promoted global economic recovery. We deepened pragmatic exchanges and cooperation in all fields which brought about tangible benefits to the two peoples. Last year, bilateral trade, two-way investment stock and total number of personnel exchanges all hit a record high. We maintained close communication and coordination on such international and regional hotspot issues as the Iranian nuclear issue, the Korean nuclear issue, South Sudan, Afghanistan, the Middle East as well as such global issues as fighting against Ebola and countering terrorism. As an old Chinese saying goes, "Peaches and plums do not talk, yet a path is formed beneath them." These worthy fruits of cooperation across the Pacific Ocean speaks eloquently to the vitality and potential of China-U.S. relations.
This leads to the question: what shall we do to advance the new model of major country relationship between China and the U.S. from a new starting point and how can we work together to promote world peace and development? The answer, in my view, is to stick to the right direction of such a new model of relationship and make gradual yet solid progress. An ancient Chinese said, "A decision can be properly made after taking into account the past, the future and the normal practices." A number of things are particularly important for our efforts.

MISSILES DF-21D CHINOIS « TUEURS DE PORTE-AVIONS » défilé du 03/09/2015 ,PEKIN . HD

Çin Halk Cumhuriyeti, İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nın bitiminin 70'inci yılını başkent Pekin'in kalbinde yer alan Tiananmen Meydanı'nda düzenlediği dev askeri geçit töreniyle kutladı.

Manchester City Player Takes Awkward Selfie With Xi Jinping
The Internet's mind was collectively blown Friday when Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero posted a selfie with Chinese President Xi Jinping — with another world leader trying to edge in on the action. No mention of Prime Minister David Cameron's selfie bomb, though, in Aguero's tweet. The Chinese president's four-day visit to the UK has been met with pomp and protests. British police arrested a survivor of the Tiananmen Square massacre who lives in the UK and searched his home following a peaceful protest against Xi.

The Prime Minister today brought up a sore memory in front of Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the pair visited a pub near Cameron's country retreat.
He recounted to a local visiting the Plough Inn at Cadsden the story of when he left eight-year-old daughter Nancy at the pub for a quarter of an hour back in 2012.
Cameron was then said to be "distraught" upon discovering that he and wife Samantha had left the premises after a 'Sunday drink' without their child.

President Xi Visits London hosted by Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
President Xi Visits London hosted by Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Kate Middleton and Prince William meets Chinese President and Mrs Xi.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were joined by kung fu star Jackie Chan as they met Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife at an event to mark the second day of their state visit to Britain.
Stealing the show in a plum-coloured lace dress, Kate looked relaxed as she greeted First Lady Peng Liyuan, a style icon in her own right, outside Lancaster House, in London, where the group attended the showcase highlighting the creative and technological collaborations between their nations.
The best of British was put on display at the event, including an outlandish hat by leading British milliner Philip Treacy, a Dalek and Tardis from Doctor Who, and James Bond's Aston Martin. The guests were also treated to a live performance by some of the cast from the hit BBC show Poldark.
There was excitement when Chan met the royal couple, with both William and Kate smiling as they posed for a photo alongside their guests.
This afternoon, Mr Xi joined the Prime Minister at Downing Street for a working lunch and talks with Cabinet ministers. The Government hopes this week’s state visit will secure more than £30 billion of trade deals, including huge investments in infrastructure projects.
Tonight the visiting dignitaries attended a banquet at Guildhall, hosted by the Lord Mayor and the City of London.

David Cameron tells President Xi how he once left his daughter behind at pub
David Cameron tells President Xi how he once left his daughter behind at pub
David Cameron takes President Xi for fish and chips and tells him that he he once made a 'terrible mistake' and left his daughter behind in the pub
David Cameron and President Xi Jinping of China have spent recent days signing multi-billion pound trade deals and reaching historic agreements on nuclear power and cyber security.
On Wednesday evening, however, Mr Cameron found himself explaining to Mr Xi how he once made a "terrible mistake" and left his daughter behind in a pub.
The Prime Minister took Mr Xi to the Plough Inn in Cadsden, Buckinghamshire, for a pint and fish and chips at the request of the Chinese leader.
Mr Cameron told Mr Xi the "famous" story of how in 2012 he drove off from the pub near Chequers without his daughter Nancy, then aged eight.
Speaking while drinking a pint of ale with Mr Xi, he said: "I once famously made a terrible mistake. I got into the car and I left my daughter.
"I've been in here a few times but I'm not leaving my family here today. She [Nancy] tells the story about her dad her in the pub. She's coped very well."
The world leaders ate a basket of mini fish and chips each with homemade tartar sauce during the 20 minute visit ahead of a formal dinner with their wives.
Philip Hammond, the Foreign Secretary, described the food as "good stuff" but said that the President's "only problem" was a lack of salt and vinegar.
Mr Cameron wore a poppy despite concerns that it would offend the Chinese leader because of its link to the opium wars.
Earlier Samantha Cameron gave Mi Xi's wife, Peng Liyan, a handbag worth £550 from up-and-coming British designer Sophie Hulme.
The Camerons also gave Mr Xi and his wife a personalised crystal platter centrepiece from the Devon based Dartington crystal, along with a commemorative lunar gold coin from the Royal Mint to mark the Chinese Year of the Sheep.
Earlier, the leaders met at Chequers where Mr Cameron took the president for a walk round the grounds, pointing out trees planted in honour of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as well as one he planted in 2012.
The pair then headed inside for an hour long bilateral that focused on international affairs and China's role on the world stage.

Xi Attends Manchester City Government Banquet
Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a banquet given by the Manchester city government on Friday.
During his speech at the banquet, Xi said that during the four-day visit, he and Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister David Cameron, and representatives of other social sectors had a profound exchange of views and reached consensuses on a broad range of issues in developing Sino-British relations and cooperation in different fields. He believed the Sino-British comprehensive strategic partnership will pick up speed and move forward under a new line chartered by both sides.
Xi stressed that, as the origin of the Industrial Revolution two hundred years ago, Manchester witnessed the great changes of society and currently is going through development into a modern city that is full of vitality.
Xi said that Sino-British relations are at a new historic high, and the mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation between China and the UK, as well as China and Manchester, are facing new and important opportunities. China hopes Manchester can positively take the role of a leader for Sino-British relations and the role of a navigator of Sino-British cooperation. He also believed the exchanges and cooperation between China and Manchester will usher in a bright future.
Prime Minister Cameron said at the banquet that the UK and China are all important members of the international society, and the two countries have traditional friendship and great cooperation potential. He said the "global comprehensive strategic partnership for the 21st Century" is in accord with the common interests of both sides.
Cameron reiterated that the UK is willing to be China's best partner among western countries.
Warren Smith, the Queen's representative in Greater Manchester, Prime Minister Cameron, and Manchester's Lord Mayor Paul Murphy warmly greeted President Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan when they arrived in Manchester.

David Cameron Reveals His Daughter Still Tells Story Of Being Left In Pub In Front Of Xi Jinping
But remarking on the tale today, the Conservative leader commented in front of Chinese Premiere Xi that he "won't make that mistake again", after the two leaders visited the same, famed pub.
"I've been in here a few times, I know," Cameron joked with one member of the public, as President Xi looked on, adding: "But I'm not leaving my family here today - I won't make that mistake again."
The Prime Minister commented that daughter Nancy had "coped very well", but revealed she continued to tell the story of her abandonment every time the family visited the Inn.
"Every time she comes here she stands on the table and tells the story about her dad leaving her in the pub," Cameron remarked, in front of a bemused President Xi.
Before leaving, the Asian super-power leader tucked into a portion of fish and chips with Cameron, which he was reportedly "desperate" to sample.

Willy Lam On Xi Jinping’s Unpublicized Agendas
Renowned for his coverage of China's elite politics and leadership transitions, veteran Sinologist Willy Lam has produced the first book-length study in English of the rise of Xi Jinping--General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since November 2012. With rare insight, Lam describes Xi's personal history and his fascination with quasi-Maoist values, the factional politics through which he ascended, the configuration of power of the Fifth-Generation leadership, and the country's likely future directions under the charismatic "princeling."
Despite an undistinguished career as a provincial administrator, Xi has rapidly amassed more power than his predecessors. He has overawed his rivals and shaken up the party-state hierarchy by launching large-scale anti-corruption and rectification campaigns. With a strong power base in the People's Liberation Army and a vision of China as an "awakening lion," Xi has been flexing China's military muscle in sovereignty rows with countries including Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines while trying to undermine the influence of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region. While Xi is still fine-tuning his art of governance, his zero tolerance for dissent and his preoccupation with upholding the privileges of the "red aristocracy" and the CCP's status as "perennial ruling party" do not bode well for economic, political, or cultural reforms. Lam takes a close look at Xi's ideological and political profile and considers how his conservative outlook might shape what the new strongman calls "the Great Renaissance of the Chinese race."
About the Speaker
Dr. Willy Wo-Lap Lam is a Senior Fellow at The Jamestown Foundation. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Center for China Studies, the History Department and the Program of Master’s in Global Political Economy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the author of five books on China, including Chinese Politics in the Hu Jintao Era: New Leaders, New Challenges.
