The Republic of Yemen (Arabic: الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), commonly known as Yemeni/ˈjɛmən/ (Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), is a country located in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, and Oman to the east. Yemen is considered one of the poorest countries in the Arab world. Its capital and largest city is Sana'a. Yemen's territory includes over 200 islands, the largest of which is Socotra, about 415 km (258 mi) to the south of mainland Yemen, off the coast of Somalia. It is the only state in the Arabian Peninsula to have a purely republican form of government. Approximately 53% of Yemenis are Sunnis, while 45% are ZaydiShias.
One etymology derives Yemen from yamin, meaning "on the right side", as the south is on the right when facing the sunrise. Another derives Yemen from yumn, meaning "felicity", as the region is fertile. The Romans called it Arabia Felix (Happy Arabia) as opposed to Arabia Deserta (Deserted Arabia), which was their term for northern Arabia.
The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen — also referred to as South Yemen, Democratic Yemen or Yemen (Aden) — was a single-partysocialist state in the present-day southern and eastern Provinces of Yemen. It united with the Yemen Arab Republic, commonly known as North Yemen, on May 22, 1990, to form the current Republic of Yemen.
In 1838, Sultan Muhsin bin Fadl of the nearby state of Lahej ceded 194 km² (75 sq. miles) including Aden to the British. On 19 January 1839, the British East India Company landed Royal Marines at Aden to occupy the territory and stop attacks by pirates against British shipping to India. It then became an important trading hub between British India and the Red Sea, and following the opening of the Suez canal in 1869, it became a coaling station for ships en route to India. Aden was ruled as part of British India until 1937, when the city of Aden became the Colony of Aden. The Aden hinterland and Hadhramaut to the east formed the remainder of what would become South Yemen and was not administered directly by Aden but were tied to Britain by treaties of protection with local rulers of traditional polities that, together, became known as the Aden Protectorate. Economic development was largely centred in Aden, and while the city flourished, the states of the Aden Protectorate stagnated.

Sufferings Of South Yemen' People From War:
Here are some messages that need to be conveyed to the whole World to know the humanitarian sufferings of the Southern Yemen's People from the aggressive war that the Houthis and Ali Saleh' forces carry out against the South.
Here are three citizens from Aden and Al-Dhalea governorates talk in English about some of what they and all the Southern People suffers because of the Hourhis and Saleh's aggression on the South. Children cannot even go out their homes, neither to go to schools, nor to visit their friends and relatives or even for buying the daily-life's needs. After the unsettlement occurred, security vanished, the living situations devastated and everything changed and still change from worse to the worst. Will the UN and the World take a look towards the oppressed Southern people by an eye of responsibility to end their sufferings, to stop the genocides that are committed by the northern aggressive-war criminals (The Houthi militias and Saleh's forces) and to at least rescue the children, elders and all citizens of South Yemen before the northern aggressors exterminate everyone and everything in the South.

The Republic Of Yemen: there is almost no other country on Earth that possesses as many secrets and ancient legends as the Arabia Felix and the Bab Al Yemen, the gateway to the Yemen, is the entrance to the historic district of Sanaa, the Yemen’s capital city that it is believed to date back to the third century A.D. Women are rarely to be seen in Yemen’s marketplaces and, when they are, they are hidden from male glances by a protective veil. Islam still plays an important role in the daily cultural life of the people, including the traditional market places that are almost exclusively a male domain. The Republic Of Yemen covers a large part of the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula and contains several fascinating historical sites. East of Sanaa on the ancient Frankincense route, is the town of Marib that was once the residence of the legendary Queen Of Saba and in the extreme north is the town of Sadah, a region known for its powerful tribes. In the centre of the Djebel Harraz is the picturesque mountain village of Manakhah. Due to its location it was once a strategic point on the ancient trading route between the sea and the highlands. The breathtaking architecture of its buildings still testifies to the former prosperity of a village that today is well known for its popular market. Al Hudaydah was once the most important Turkish harbour on the Red Sea. The city was a commercial rival of the British occupied city of Aden to the south which, during colonial times, was of great importance in securing a sea route to India. In addition to the recent modernisation of the harbour the fishing industry still plays an important role and the fertile coastal waters of the Red Sea still ensure a good catch. To the south of Al Hudaydah is the legendary old harbour of Al Mokha, the former centre of the country’s coffee trade from which the world renowned Mocha coffee derived its name. Despite their present poverty the people here are a proud race and the ancient name of the Yemen, Arabia Felix, or “Arabia The Content”, is still a thing of the present.

Gulf-supported forces loyal to Yemen's exiled government on Saturday retook a fifth province in the country's south, military officials said, as they continued their advance against Iran-backed rebels.
The rebels "withdrew" and "handed over" Shabwa to the pro-government forces after they were promised a safe route out of the province, a military official told AFP.
Other army officials confirmed the rebel pull-out.
"The province was handed over" to the Southern Movement, a secessionist group whose militants have been fighting in loyalist ranks, said Salem al-Awlaqi, a political activist in Shabwa.

Anti-Houthi Fighters Score More Gains in South Yemen
According to residents and loyalist sources, fighters loyal to Yemen's deposed president seized about 10 southern villages from Houthi forces on Tuesday. The fighters maintained their momentum in their offensive a day after capturing the country's biggest air base. Clashes took place across the southern province of Lahj-- most of which is now back in the hands of the Saudi-backed loyalist forces. Militias siding with President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi fled Yemen for Saudi Arabia in March. Now, they and army units trained and equipped by Gulf Arab countries have made advances against the Iranian-allied Houthis in recent weeks.

Yemen's Sanaa Quiet as Truce Begins, Clashes Reported In South
A truce appeared to be holding on Monday in Yemen's capital Sanaa, the target of near-nightly air raids during a war that has lasted for ten months. Residents say the city passed a quiet night. However, according to sources in militias opposed to Houthi forces, there were clashes early on Monday in Marib and Taiz provinces to the south. Details were not immediately available. The Arab coalition fighting the Iranian-allied Houthi militia announced a ceasefire from 11.59 p.m. on Sunday evening for five days. The purpose of the cease-fire is to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid amid severe shortages of fuel, food and medicine.

Loyalist forces in the south launched an offensive last month against the rebels, forcing them out of main southern city Aden in mid-July.
They later advanced retaking the provinces Daleh, Lahj, and Abyan, in addition to Shabwa -- which has substantial oil reserves.
Complaining of marginalisation, the Shiite Huthi rebels descended from their northern stronghold last year and seized capital Sanaa unopposed before advancing on second city Aden in March.
Renegade troops still loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who resigned in 2012 following a year-long popular uprising against his rule, have joined the Huthis.
On the other side, the southern secessionists have joined ranks with pro-government troops as well as local Sunni tribes to form what they have dubbed Popular Resistance Committees.
The conflict has cost nearly 4,300 lives since March, half of them civilians, according to UN figures, while 80 percent of Yemen's 21 million people need aid and protection.
The five provinces retaken by pro-government troops, along with Mahra and Hadramawt, which the rebels never entered, comprise what was formerly known as the independent South Yemen.
It was its own state between the end of British colonial rule in 1967 and its union with the north in 1990.
A secession attempt four years later sparked a brief civil war that ended with northern forces occupying the region.

They're celebrating 47 years since Britain's withdrawal from South Yemen - but for many it's more than just an anniversary.
Recently the date has become a rallying point for southern secessionists.
30 November 1967 also marks the day southern Yemen became an independent country - as well as the start of 23 years of instability, before unification with North Yemen in 1990.
Since then, those from the former country - the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen - say they have been unfairly treated and marginalised by the Sanaa based government.
But as fighting continues in the country between Yemen's government, Houthi rebels and al-Qaeda militants, there's now a real hope for many activists that South Yemen could once again become independent.
The Southern Movement also known as Al-Hirak al-Janoubi is leading the calls - and has been organising protests in Aden for several months.
One of them, a sit-in protest that began last month in one of Aden's main squares, continues.
"These days the south will witness a revolutionary escalation that is nothing like it has seen before, not even the occupation (the southern movement consider the Yemeni authority as an occupation to the south) has witnessed such escalation, because the people of the south have a great will for liberation, independence and expelling the Yemeni occupier," says Mohsen Ali, an activist with Southern Movement.
Many of the protesters hold-up posters showing the face of former Southern Yemen President Ali Salem Al-Beidh who now heads up Al-Hirak al-Janoubi.
Following unification, Al-Beidh served as Vice President to Ali Abdullah Saleh - before leaving the cabinet in 1993, ahead of Yemen's civil war.
"Today, the people of the south are forming a red line and revolting for freedom and independence, the whole world must understand that the red line is not the United Nations, but the people of the south are going to defend their land," says protester, Saiid Rageh.
Former soldiers arrive at the protest wearing the uniforms of the old order - while one man holds up his PDRY passport defiantly.
Security officials were not authorised to speak to reporters, but some spoke on condition of anonymity. They claimed they later dispersed protesters gathered outside a government building by firing tear gas and shooting in the air.

CHORUS:
Repeat, Oh World, my song.
Echo it over and over again.
Remember, through my joy, each martyr.
Clothe him with the shining mantles Of our festival.
Repeat, Oh World, my song.
Repeat, Oh World, my song.
1. Oh my country, we are sons and grandsons of your men.
We will guard all of your majesty in our hands.
Its light will be immortal on all ways
Every rock on your mountains, all atoms of your soils
2. All wets of your waters, are our mine.
There are for our large wishes, and our right.
Came from your past’s pretty glories.
Chorus
3. My unity, Oh marvellous song fill myself
You are promise in our response
My banner, Oh cloth nailed from every sun
Raise forever on every peak
My nation, give me strength, Oh source of strength
And save me for you, best nation
4. In faith and love I am part of mankind.
An Arab I am in all my life.
My heart beats in tune with Yemen.
No foreigner shall dominate over Yemen.
Chorus

STORYLINE
Yemen''s president said on Sunday he was ready to talk to al-Qaida members who renounced violence, suggesting he could show them the same kind of leniency he has granted militants in the past, despite US pressure to crack down on the militant group.
Yemen is moving cautiously in the fight against al-Qaida, worried over a potential backlash in a country where anger at the US and extremism are widespread.
Thousands of Yemenis are battle-hardened veterans of past "holy wars" in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya and Iraq, and though most are not engaged in violence now, they preserve a die-hard al-Qaida ideology.
"The whole Islamic nation looks at al-Qaida as the hero which will liberate the Muslim world from the west domination and liberate the occupied Muslim countries from the Americans," said Ali Mohammed Omar, a Yemeni radical who says he fought in Afghanistan from 1990-1992 and claims to have met Osama bin Laden twice during that time.
In an interview with the Associated press, Omar said any movement against al-Qaida would lead to the "downfall of the Yemeni regime."
And he warned against any intervention in Yemen by US or British troops.
"Yemeni people are waiting for any US or British troops intervention. People will cut them in pieces. No American soldier will be in peace in Yemen," he said.
"The Yemeni government know that if any American troops came to Yemen to fight al-Qaida that the whole Yemeni people will fight alongside al- Qaida."
Yemeni forces recently launched their heaviest strikes and raids against al-Qaida in years, and Washington has praised San''a for showing a new determination against al-Qaida''s offshoot in the country.
The United States has increased money and training for Yemen''s counter-terror forces, calling al-Qaida in Yemen a global threat after it allegedly plotted a failed attempt to bomb a US passenger jet on Christmas Day.
But President Ali Abdullah Saleh''s comments raised the possibility he could continue a policy that has frustrated US officials in the past - releasing al-Qaida militants on promises they will not engage in militancy again.
Several have since broken those promises and are believed to have returned to al-Qaida''s ranks.
Omar heads an organisation in the southern city of Aden mobilising against the secession movement.
During his time in Afghanistan, the 42-year-old Omar recalled meeting bin Laden twice in the Pakistani city of Peshawar.
He said they discussed the situation in Yemen, the al-Qaida chief''s ancestral homeland.
Bin Laden told him al-Qaida bought thousands of weapons sold off illicitly by the former independent government in south Yemen when it unified with the north in 1990 - arms that remain in Yemen, Omar said.
After returning to Yemen in 1992, Omar - who says he is in al-Qaida - was imprisoned twice, including a year-long stint in 2005 on charges he helped send militants to fight American troops in Iraq. He was acquitted and released.

Yemen conflict: Cry for help?
Yemen’s president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi has appealed to Gulf countries for military assistance to stop the advance of Shia Houthi rebels.
The Houthis have pushed south to within 50 kilometres of the port city of Aden.
President Hadi is reported to have left his palace compound in Aden - where he's been staying since he fled from the capital Sanaa last month.
Hadi has turned to neighbours and the United Nations Security Council for help, requesting military intervention and a no-fly zone.
And Saudi Arabia has reassured him it will take "necessary measures" to protect the region if a peaceful solution cannot be found.

Yemen minister calls for Gulf military intervention
The Yemeni foreign minister has called for Gulf Arab states to intervene to prevent the advance of Shia Houthi rebels into the south of the country.
The Houthis ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi last month, who fled to the southern port city of Aden where he established a rival power base.
At the weekend, the Houthis seized Taiz, Yemen's third largest city, bringing them closer to Aden.
The UN has warned that Yemen is on the edge of civil war.
Mr Hadi's Foreign Minister Riad Yassin told the Saudi-owned Asharq al-Awsat newspaper he asked the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to

Noam Chomsky: Yemen is the most extraordinary global terrorism campaign in history
Professor Noam Chomsky joins Afshin to discuss the major crisis in the West. From the ‘terror-generating’ drone strikes in Yemen which leads to Al Qaeda’s expansion to anti-neoliberal movements spreading through South America and even parts of Europe with the rise of Syriza and Podemos, could US hegemony be coming to an end? And with the ‘extraordinary demonisation’ of Russia over the Ukraine crisis, there’s a very real risk of ‘a conflict that could be terminal.’

Hopes for a diplomatic solution rest with UN-brokered talks expected to be held in Doha in the coming days.
But does the crisis risk splintering into a regional conflict?
Presenter: Dareen Abughaida
Guests:
Abdullah Baabood - Director of the Gulf Studies Centre at Qatar University.
Steven Zyck - Author of the book 'Mediating Transition in Yemen: Achievements and Lessons'.
Gordon Lubold - Senior Military Writer at Defense One, who has also worked with the United States Institute of Peace.

As Yemen is pulverized into oblivion, it remains unclear just exactly what Riyadh hopes to achieve in this war. Washington has tied itself to this conflict, but can’t control or explain it. Soon there won’t be much of Yemen left to make peace with.

Yemen’s agony is without end. While the Saudi-led and American-backed military assault continues unabated, it remains unclear what Riyadh and Washington are really fighting for. Though one thing appears undeniable – Yemen is joining the ranks of Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, and Somalia as places where warlords rule in conditions of anarchy.
Mr Hadi's Foreign Minister Riad Yassin told the Saudi-owned Asharq al-Awsat newspaper he asked the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to intervene, without elaborating what that would mean.
He also said he had asked the UN and GCC to impose a no-fly zone, after warplanes hit the presidential palace in Aden over the weekend.
The Houthis' rise has alarmed the GCC, and in particular Sunni-controlled Saudi Arabia, which accuses the Houthis of being a proxy for their key regional rival, Shia-majority Iran. Both of them have denied the Saudi claims.

Yemen - who is fighting whom?
The Houthis: A minority Shia from the north, the group seized control of Sanaa last year and have since been expanding their control.
President Hadi: Backed by military and police loyalists, and by militia known as Popular Resistance Committees, he is trying to fight back against the rebels from his stronghold in the south.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula: Seen by the US as the most dangerous branch of Al-Qaeda, AQAP opposes both the Houthis and forces loyal to President Hadi.
Islamic State: A Yemeni affiliate of IS has recently emerged, which seeks to eclipse AQAP.
line
Also on Monday, the Saudi foreign minister warned the Gulf states could take action to shore-up Mr Hadi.
"If this issue is not solved peacefully, we will take the necessary measures to protect the region from their aggression," said Saud al-Faisal.
The UN envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar told the BBC the Saudis had "good reasons" to be concerned about the situation.
But he added: "I don't think any side could win a civil war. No side can win a civil war - the only way forward is negotiation, which implies concession from all sides, which implies also, a compromise."

EOTC Special Prayer Service for Ethiopians massacred by ISIL in Lybia, South Africa and Yemen
Two scenes appear in the 29-minute-long video published by al-Furqan, the Islamic State’s media wing. The first scene consists of a group of Christian Ethiopians dressed all in black, on their knees, with their arms tied behind their backs. Masked IS members stand behind the Ethiopians with rifles aimed at their heads. According to the video, this scene takes place in the city of Fezzan. The Christian captives are called “Worshippers of the cross belonging to the hostile Ethiopian Church.”
The second scene shows more Christian Ethiopians dressed in orange uniforms and standing on the shores of Barqa, the same region where 21 Egyptian Christians were earlier decapitated for refusing to convert to Islam.
Other scenes include the narrator referencing the fatwas of medieval jurist Ibn Taymiyya that proclaim all Christians “infidels.” Then Abu Malik ibn Ans al-Nashwan, apparently one of the group’s leaders, appears saying that “The dealings of the Islamic State with Christians under its authority is according to Allah’s Sharia [Islamic law]. Jizya [tribute] is imposed on those who accept, and war on those who resist.”
The final scene is of the Ethiopian Christians in Fezzan being executed by gunfire to the back of their heads and the Christians in Barqa all having their heads carved off.
It is likely that the reason these Christians “resisted” to pay jizya was that they did not have the money—migrant Christian workers in Libya, whether from Egypt or Ethiopia, are about as poor as they get.
And the Ethiopians refused the only other option that could have spared their lives according to Islamic law—renunciation of the Christianity and conversion to Islam

Since 2011, when Yemeni youths took to the streets and sparked the eventual demise of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime, the country has fallen to pieces. The new embattled government is now struggling to cope with a bevy of issues, including sectarian rivalries, CIA drone strikes, and one of al Qaeda's most sophisticated branches. It now risks presiding over the failure of one of the world's most fragile countries.
In "Yemen: A Failed State," VICE News visits some of Yemen's most dangerous and hard-to-reach places and groups, including the national Army in the country's lawless East, the Houthis in Sana'a, and the Popular Committee in the South, to find out how both the government and the West's policy toward Yemen have gone wrong.

LEAD-IN:
Thousands have been rallying in Yemen's southern city of Aden, calling for independence for South Yemen.
The separatist movement says their campaign is gathering momentum - as much of the rest of the country remains fractured by fighting between the government and various rebel factions.
STORYLINE:
Waving the flag of South Yemen, jubilant crowds fill one of Aden's main squares.

CrossTalking with Gareth Porter, Ross Harrison, and Massoumeh Torfeh.
