Moldovan musicians are among those who hope to take advantage of visa-free travel to Europe. They think the new rules could not only launch local bands onto the international stage, but also that music could be an ambassador of Moldova, which in turn will aid the economy. Moldova to decide between east or west
Moldova goes to the polls on Sunday in an election being seen as a choice between continuing its path of closer integration with Europe or back tracking to join a Russian-led economic bloc.

STORYLINE:
Around one hundred Georgians living in Lithuania gathered at the Russian embassy in Vilnius on Friday to protest against a recent ban
on Georgian wine imports.
Russia moved to ban wine imports from Moldova and Georgia on March 27 saying it needed to protect consumers from poor quality wine.
Russian authorities said wines from Georgia and Moldova contain dangerous pesticides.
However, analysts say the measure was political and retaliatory, and has nothing to do with the quality of Georgian wine, which is considered countries trade mark.
"For me it is an artificial campaign on Georgian wine. I think that politics stands behind of it because they always liked good Georgian wine", said
Giorgi Khutsishvili, visitor to a restaurant, in Tbilisi.
While the Georgian government is trying to boost sales of Georgian wine in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and even in China, Georgian wine producers have experienced heavy losses after Russia, its biggest market, halted imports.
Last year wine accounted for between 11 and 12 percent of Georgia''s export, bringing in about 90 (m) million US dollars.
"We export from thirty to thirty five percent of our product into Russia. We do not have problems with exports into other countries. I think that this are false accusations, because I can state that our wine is of very high quality," said Levan Chkhaidze, Production manager, at Teliani Valley wine factory.
Georgia exports wine to 33 countries, but its main market is Russia, exporting about 42 (m) million bottles of wine there in 2005.

Moldova officially the Republic of Moldova (Romanian: Republica Moldova pronounced , also known as Moldavia, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe located between Romania to its west and Ukraine to its north, east and south. Its capital city is Chișinău.
Moldova declared itself an independent state with the same boundaries as the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1991 as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. A new constitution was adopted July 29, 1994. A strip of Moldova's internationally recognised territory on the east bank of the river Dniester has been under the de facto control of the breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990.
As a result of a decrease in industrial and agricultural output since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the relative size of the service sector in Moldova's economy has grown to dominate its GDP and currently stands at over 60%. Moldova remains, however, the poorest country in Europe.
Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. It is, among other organizations, a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC). The country aspires to join the European Union and, to this end, has implemented an initial three-year action plan within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).
In 2010, Oldowan flint tools were discovered at Bayraki that are 800,000-1.2 million years old. This demonstrates that early humans were present in Moldova during the early Paleolithic. During the Neolithic stone age era, Moldova's territory was the centre of the large Cucuteni-Trypillian culture that stretched east beyond the Dniester River in Ukraine, and west up to and beyond the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. The inhabitants of this civilization, which lasted roughly from 5500 to 2750 BC, practiced agriculture, raised livestock, hunted, and made intricately designed pottery.
In antiquity, Moldova's territory was inhabited by Dacian tribes. Between the 1st and 7th centuries AD, the south was intermittently under the Roman, then Byzantine Empires. Due to its strategic location on a route between Asia and Europe, the territory of modern Moldova was invaded many times in late antiquity and early Middle Ages, including by Goths, Huns, Avars, Bulgarians, Magyars, Pechenegs, Cumans, Mongols and Tatars.
The Principality of Moldavia, established in 1359, was bounded by the Carpathian Mountains in the west, Dniester river in the east, and Danube River and Black Sea to the south. Its territory comprised the present-day territory of the Republic of Moldova, the eastern eight of the 41 counties of Romania, and the Chernivtsi Oblast and Budjak region of Ukraine. Like the present-day republic and Romania's north-eastern region, it was known to the locals as Moldova. Moldavia was invaded repeatedly by Crimean Tatars and, since the 15th century, by the Turks. In 1538, the principality became a tributary to the Ottoman Empire, but it retained internal and partial external autonomy.

Europe's Poorest Country - Moldova: The impoverished inhabitants are being forced into prostitution and selling their organs just to survive.

Take a look at the continent's poorest country, Moldova. The impoverished inhabitants are being forced into prostitution and selling their organs just to survive. Billboards in the capital Chisinau warn women about being sold as prostitutes. UNICEF has set up a call centre for women. We hear one such harrowing tale: "A man told me that I had been sold to him, and he told me what I would have to do. I started to cry, and said I wanted to go home. But he had already sold me to two other men." Times are hard. Moldova now pays 40% of its GDP in debts and interest; next year it will be 70%. Yet life goes on; we see an orthodox wedding and visit a beauty parlour to catch some better times. The country has been split since the ethnic civil war in 92'. The break-away region to the east of the river is TransDniestr where, worryingly, 45,000 tons of Soviet military equipment is stored. But the economic situation is the biggest worry; disillusioned with Western ways, the communists were voted back into power in the spring, with an absolute majority. An engaging and eye-opening look at a neglected region.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the stability of Moldova toppled with it, causing the economy to fall and crime and unemployment to rise. Through it all, the children suffered most. Millions of men and women left home to find work abroad, leaving little ones to fend for themselves. Regardless of the circumstances that caused their parents to disappear, one thing was certain: the children were alone. These kids, many no more than toddlers, were forced to struggle for survival in any way possible. Local ADRA workers Natalia and Andrei show how Rainbow of Hope, a children’s center for these abandoned kids, offers more than just survival—they offer a home and a family.

Moldova goes to the polls on Sunday in an election being seen as a choice between continuing its path of closer integration with Europe or back tracking to join a Russian-led economic bloc.
Once part of the former Soviet Union, Moldova is one of the poorest and smallest countries in Europe, one thing many people are united on is the feeling that nothing is being done to combat corruption.
