16. Wide pan from Watkins to committee
STORYLINE:
Enron Corp executive Sherron Watkins told Congress on Thursday that she "was highly alarmed" by information she had received about the U-S company's finances.
Watkins said she warned then-Chairman Kenneth Lay last summer that investors were being misled by inflated profit statements.
Watkins said she continued to ask questions and seek answers from colleagues who may have known more about the complex partnerships that eventually brought the company down.
In a testimony to the House Energy and Commerce investigative subcommittee, Watkins said she "never heard reassuring explanations."
When it appeared that Andrew Fastow, the architect of the partnerships, was being considered for promotion to chief executive, Watkins said she went directly to Lay in hopes that the financial improprieties would be corrected.
Watkins said Lay assured her that he would look into the issue but only went as far as to ask Enron's law firm to investigate the matter.
Republican John Dingell called Watkins "a bright spot" in a company where executives turned a blind eye to abuses.
Watkins appeared before Congress as a willing and knowledgeable witness following a parade of top Enron officials who have refused to answer questions.
She testified under a "friendly subpoena" because she is still an Enron employee.
Watkins, 42, is a vice president for corporate development at Enron.

BBB Foundation is pleased to present Sherron Watkins. She is the former Vice President of Enron Corporation who, in August 2001, alerted then-CEO Ken Lay to accounting irregularities within the company, warning him that Enron ‘might implode in a wave of accounting scandals.’ She has testified before Congressional Committees from the House and Senate investigating Enron’s demise.
Watkins joined Enron in late 1993, initially working for Andrew Fastow, managing Enron’s $1 billion-plus portfolio of energy related investments. After three years, she worked in several other units of the company until late June 2001 when she went back to work for Fastow in his new area of responsibility over the mergers and acquisitions of Enron Corp. Ultimately, Watkins resigned from Enron in November, 2002.
Lauded in the press for her courageous actions, Time magazine named her, along with Coleen Rowley of the FBI and Cynthia Cooper of WorldCom, as their 2002 “Persons of the Year.” Time concluded, “Democratic capitalism requires that people trust in the integrity of public and private institutions alike. As whistleblowers, these three became fail-safe systems that did not fail. For believing – really believing – that the truth is one thing that must not be moved off the books and for stepping in to make sure that it wasn’t.”
Ms. Watkins has received numerous honors in recognition of her outstanding demonstration of ethics in the workplace. She also co-authored, along with prize-winning journalist Mimi Swartz, Power Failure, the Inside Story of the Collapse of Enron. Currently, she lectures around the country on the subject of Enron and the erosion of trust in this country’s capitalistic system due to many corporate and Wall Street scandals.

Former Enron chief executive Jeffrey Skilling has told senators he didn't lie to Congress when he testified that he was unaware of the U-S company's precarious financial position or that it was using a complex series of partnerships to hide debt.
Addressing sceptical lawmakers on Tuesday, Skilling said he "never duped Ken Lay", disputing previous statements by Sherron Watkins, a company vice president, who said Skilling had manipulated Enron's former chairman.

STORYLINE:
Former Enron Corp. Chief Executive Jeffrey Skilling declared he was "absolutely innocent" on Monday as he began to testify in his own defence in his fraud and conspiracy trial.
Skilling''s co-defendant, Enron founder Kenneth Lay, and Enron auditor Lee Perry, were also in court.
Lay aims to testify later this month.
The 52-year-old one-time corporate celebrity whose reputation as a business wunderkind shattered along with the company he once ran also said he "never ... not once" considered making a deal with prosecutors the way more than a dozen other Enron executives did.
Skilling, known for his plain-spoken manner and bravado as he led Enron''s transformation from a staid pipeline company into an energy trading giant, addressed jurors directly, his eyebrows raised slightly, looking earnest and alert.
He acknowledged being nervous as his lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli who arrived with him, began his questioning.
Although he has faced harsh questioning from investigators before, this is the first time federal prosecutors who have pursued him for years will have an opportunity to grill him.
But the cross examination likely won''t come until midweek or later.
Petrocelli noted that among the Enron executives who pleaded guilty to crimes and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors were Skilling''s friends and co-workers.
The defence has maintained throughout the 11-week trial that most of them did so in response to government pressure to avoid trials or lengthy prison terms and were actually innocent.
Petrocelli asked Skilling if he thought his former co-workers were guilty.
"I would say the vast majority who testified here are in my opinion not guilty," Skilling said without naming names.
Skilling described how Enron consumed his life and how, as it grew into a successful company, he decided to find some personal balance.
But he also said he told former Chairman Kenneth Lay on "that fateful day, Friday, the 13th of July," that he wanted to resign after 11 years with the company because he was bothered by Enron''s falling stock.
He also said he told Lay that he believed he had lost credibility with Wall Street after calling a hedge-fund worker an obscene name during a conference call when the worker questioned Enron''s financial figures.
Earlier, prosecutor John Hueston continued pressing former general counsel Jim Derrick on Monday to highlight Enron''s cursory response to August 2001 memos from Sherron Watkins, then an Enron vice president, who warned Lay about possibly shady accounting related to financial structures backed by the company''s stock.
The note, which won Watkins fame when released by Congress the next year, came days after Skilling unexpectedly resigned as chief executive officer.
