Ultra-nationalist political parties scored unprecedented victories at the European elections, making the rise of the far-right in Europe impossible to ignore. Many of these groups, some of which are openly neo-Nazi, are gaining strength everywhere.
In Sweden, there's been a sharp rise in political violence in the country, with crimes carried out by radical groups making headlines. However, what's unusual is that one of the most violent extremist organizations in Sweden aligns itself not with Nazism and the far-right, but with anti-fascism and the far-left.
Known as the Revolutionary Front, this group of militant socialists aim to crush fascism by any means necessary. VICE News set out to try and find the Revolutionary Front, and to understand the unlikely rise of the militant far-left in Sweden.

In September 2013, Greek authorities took the unprecedented action of arresting a number of members of the far-right political organization Golden Dawn — including its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos. In the wake of the economic crisis, Golden Dawn has risen to become Greece’s third major political party, despite regular reports linking the organization to hate crimes.
The trigger for these arrests was the murder of Pavlos Fyssas a.k.a. Killah P, a rapper whose songs often carried anti-fascist sentiments. His death sparked an investigation into Golden Dawn, leading to members being charged with crimes including murder, running a criminal organization, weapons offenses, and reported assaults on immigrants.
In the days surrounding the first anniversary of Fyssa's death, VICE News traveled to Greece to attend a protest in the rapper's memory and see how the events of the past year have affected Greece’s anti-fascist movement.

In contrast, anti-fascist protesters gathered outside Downing Street in far superior numbers. However both sides were kept apart by police, which lead to several clashes.

AFA was originally set up in 1985 as a broad front anti-fascist organisation. The main fascist organisation at this time, following the demise of the National Front after Thatcher took power in 1979, was the British National Party (BNP), a more extreme split from the NF. Militant physical force anti-fascism has a long tradition in Britain - going back to the 1930's, the 'Battle of Cable Street' and the 43 Group in London's East End, and it was in this tradition that AFA was formed.

A fist fight broke out as anti-fascists gathered in central London to counter British National Party march on Saturday. Organised by anti-fascism organisation, Unite Against Fascism, the counter-demonstration launched a campaign - 'Don't let the racists divide us' - calling for the British public to reject what they believe to be fascist groups exploiting the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.
Tensions have run high at far-right rallies held across the country since serving soldier Lee Rigby was fatally stabbed by two men after running him down in a vehicle near the Woolwich Barracks in London. Over 100 balaclava-clad supporters of the extreme-right group clashed with police shortly after the murder on May 22, throwing glass bottles and rocks while gathering at the Woolwich Arsenal railway station.
The murder suspects have been identified as 28-year-old Briton of Nigerian descent, Michael Adebolajo, and 22-year-old Michael Adebowale. Adebowale, accused of the murder, appeared in court for the first time on May 30. Adebolajo remains in hospital, being treated for injuries sustained at the crime scene.
Lee Rigby's family released a statement ahead of June 1, emphasising that "Lee would not want people to use his name as an excuse to carry out attacks against other".

Anti-fascism is the opposition to fascist ideologies, groups and individuals. The related term antifa derives from Antifaschismus, which is German for anti-fascism; it tends to refer to individuals and groups on the left of the political spectrum, that are dedicated to fighting fascism.
The term "Anti-Fascist" was also commonly used by Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime in Italy, to describe its opponents; in this usage the term obviously carried negative and pejorative connotations. Mussolini's secret police was officially known as Organizzazione per la Vigilanza e la Repressione dell'Antifascismo (OVRA), Italian for "Organization for Vigilance and Repression of Anti-Fascism").
In Italy, the first anti-fascist resistance emerged within the minority group, who the Fascists meant to deprive of their culture, language and ethnicity. The 1920 burning of the National Hall in Trieste, the Slovene center in the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic Trieste by the Blackshirts,Benito Mussolini who, at the time, was yet to become Duce, praised as a being a "masterpiece of the Triestine fascism" (capolavoro del fascismo triestino...). Not only in multi-ethnic areas, but also in the areas where the population was exclusively Slovene, the use of Slovene language in public places, including churches, was forbidden . Children, if they spoke Slovene, were punished by Italian teachers who were brought by the Fascist State from South Italy. The Slovene teachers, writers, and clergy was sent on the other side of Italy.

Avram Noam Chomsky (/ˈnoʊm ˈtʃɒmski/; born December 7, 1928) is an American linguist, philosopher,cognitive scientist, historian, and activist. He is an Institute Professor and Professor (Emeritus) in the Department of Linguistics & Philosophy at MIT, where he has worked for over 50 years. Chomsky has been described as the "father of modern linguistics" and a major figure of analytic philosophy. His work has influenced fields such as computer science, mathematics, and psychology.
Ideologically identifying with anarcho-syndicalism and libertarian socialism, Chomsky is known for his critiques of U.S. foreign policy and contemporary capitalism, and he has been described as a prominent cultural figure. His media criticism has included Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media (1988), co-written with Edward S. Herman, an analysis articulating the propaganda model theory for examining the media.
According to the Arts and Humanities Citation Index in 1992, Chomsky was cited as a source more often than any other living scholar from 1980 to 1992, and was the eighth most cited source overall. Chomsky is the author of over 100 books. He is credited as the creator or co-creator of the Chomsky hierarchy, the universal grammar theory, and the Chomsky–Schützenberger theorem.

Asian people or Asiatic people is a term with multiple meanings that refers to people who descend from a portion of Asia's population.
Native ethnic groups of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan self-identify themselves as Asian. They are also recognized as Asian by Russians and Chinese.[citation needed]
This self-identification is based phenotypically, and on cultural differences from Russians, as these countries used to be parts of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, and therefore have significant Russian populations. Another reason for such self-identification is patriotic: "the native people of the Center of Asia - are undoubtedly Asians".[citation needed]
In parts of anglophone Africa, especially East Africa and South Africa, and in parts of the Anglophone Caribbean, the term "Asian" is more commonly associated with people of South Asian origin, particularly Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans.
Notably, the Australian Census includes Central Asia, a region that is often considered to be part of the Greater Middle East. The Australian Census includes four regions of Asia in its official definition. Defined by the 2006–2011 Australian Census, three broad groups have the word Asian included in their name: Central and Southern Asian, South-East Asian and North-East Asian. Russians are classified as Southern and Eastern Europeans while Middle Easterners are classified as North African and Middle Easterners.

Ultra-nationalist political parties scored unprecedented victories at the European elections, making the rise of the far-right in Europe impossible to ignore. Many of these groups, some of which are openly neo-Nazi, are gaining strength everywhere.
In Sweden, there's been a sharp rise in political violence in the country, with crimes carried out by radical groups making headlines. However, what's unusual is that one of the most violent extremist organizations in Sweden aligns itself not with Nazism and the far-right, but with anti-fascism and the far-left.
Known as the Revolutionary Front, this group of militant socialists aim to crush fascism by any means necessary. VICE News set out to try and find the Revolutionary Front, and to understand the unlikely rise of the militant far-left in Sweden.

In September 2013, Greek authorities took the unprecedented action of arresting a number of members of the far-right political organization Golden Dawn — including its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos. In the wake of the economic crisis, Golden Dawn has risen to become Greece’s third major political party, despite regular reports linking the organization to hate crimes.
The trigger for these arrests was the murder of Pavlos Fyssas a.k.a. Killah P, a rapper whose songs often carried anti-fascist sentiments. His death sparked an investigation into Golden Dawn, leading to members being charged with crimes including murder, running a criminal organization, weapons offenses, and reported assaults on immigrants.
In the days surrounding the first anniversary of Fyssa's death, VICE News traveled to Greece to attend a protest in the rapper's memory and see how the events of the past year have affected Greece’s anti-fascist movement.

Mensi of the Angelic Upstarts gives a rundown of the history of militant anti-fascism in the UK from the 1936 Battle of Cable Street against the Blackshirts, through the 1970s against the National Front and the Battle of Lewisham through to the war on the streets against the British National Party in the 1990s
AFA was originally set up in 1985 as a broad front anti-fascist organisation. The main fascist organisation at this time, following the demise of the National Front after Thatcher took power in 1979, was the British National Party (BNP), a more extreme split from the NF. Militant physical force anti-fascism has a long tradition in Britain - going back to the 1930's, the 'Battle of Cable Street' and the 43 Group in London's East End, and it was in this tradition that AFA was formed.

A fist fight broke out as anti-fascists gathered in central London to counter British National Party march on Saturday. Organised by anti-fascism organisation, Unite Against Fascism, the counter-demonstration launched a campaign - 'Don't let the racists divide us' - calling for the British public to reject what they believe to be fascist groups exploiting the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.
Tensions have run high at far-right rallies held across the country since serving soldier Lee Rigby was fatally stabbed by two men after running him down in a vehicle near the Woolwich Barracks in London. Over 100 balaclava-clad supporters of the extreme-right group clashed with police shortly after the murder on May 22, throwing glass bottles and rocks while gathering at the Woolwich Arsenal railway station.
The murder suspects have been identified as 28-year-old Briton of Nigerian descent, Michael Adebolajo, and 22-year-old Michael Adebowale. Adebowale, accused of the murder, appeared in court for the first time on May 30. Adebolajo remains in hospital, being treated for injuries sustained at the crime scene.
Lee Rigby's family released a statement ahead of June 1, emphasising that "Lee would not want people to use his name as an excuse to carry out attacks against other".

The Malcolm X Movement and partners are organising a 40years death anniversary event for Paul Robeson.
Robeson was a pioneering Black academic student, American Football player, singer, actor and anti-imperialist and socialist revolutionary. A towering man both phsyical stature and in what he stood for against white supremacy racism, his work in respect towards African liberation and his committment to struggle with and for all those across the world who are exploited and oppressed by global capitalism, colonialism and imperialism. Paul Robeson was a forerunner of the Black radicalism of the 1960s, with Huey Newton and many other leading Black Liberation revolutionaries crediting Robeson as a inspiration. Robeson's work in support of the USSR, the Chinese revolutionaries and then Socialist China, his support for African liberation and the struggle against fascism in Spain as well as his achievements against racism and imperialism in the USA are enormous accomplishments which are relatively little known amongst current generations.

A bit of what I saw at the anti-fascist side of the protests on Saturday in Breslauerplatz at the Cologne main station. Protests happen often here for various things, though rarely on this scale and with this much police presence. Something like 1700 protesters showed up (both sides combined). Some a small group of extreme left protesters had a short run-in with the police around 1315, but most of the afternoon was peaceful. Trains appeared to be running as normal and many Kölners appeared surprised by the protests and exasperated by delays caused by security checks at the doors. A bit of what I saw at the anti-fascist side of the protests on Saturday in Breslauerplatz at the Cologne main station. Protests happen often here for various things, though rarely on this scale and with this much police presence. Something like 1700 protesters showed up (both sides combined).
Some a small group of extreme left protesters had a short run-in with the police around 1315, but most of the afternoon was peaceful. Trains appeared to be running as normal and many Kölners appeared surprised by the protests and exasperated by delays caused by security checks at the doors.

Last week, the right-wing New York Post front cover has the headline "Muslim Killers" for their coverage of the mass shooting that took place in San Bernardino, California certainly only the beginning of a new round of demonization of Muslim people.
The racists and fascists are attacking, just as they always have done when the anti-racist and progressive movement has surged forward, and they must be answered with mass action across the country.

Austerity measures aimed at paying off an astronomical debt load have plunged the economy into a death spiral, and sparked nationwide protests and strikes. Unemployment is at 27 percent and climbing. Much as the Nazis arose in Weimar Germany by exploiting similar economic conditions, Golden Dawn, an avowedly fascist political party, has been rapidly gaining power in Greece. Once an unimportant fringe group, Golden Dawn captured seven percent of the seats in parliament in the most recent election. Armed with government funding and the tacit cooperation of the police (many of whom are Golden Dawn members), fascists have adopted a strategy of terrorizing Greece's immigrant population while offering rudimentary social services restricted to Greek citizens. Ordinary Greeks are mobilizing to prevent the fascist takeover of their country. Neighborhood assemblies, Immigrant solidarity groups, labor unions and other civil society organizations are resisting both Golden Dawn and the destructive government policies that created the economic collapse. Greek activists Sofia Papagiannaki, Thanasis Xirotsopanos, Vangelis Nanos, and Pavlos are here to speak about fascism and resistance in their country. -SPEAKER BIOS- Sofia Papagiannaki has studied Computer Science in University of Crete and works as software developer. Since 2006 she has been participating in the free social center Nosotros in Exarchia, Athens. She has been in the editing team of Anti-authoritarian newspaper/magazine Babylonia and among the organizers of B-Fest, the festival organized by Babylonia newspaper in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She is active in Anti-authoritarian movement and several other initiatives specialized in ecological issues, such as committee of solidarity to Chalkidiki (against the mines of gold) and initiative for the waste management in Attiki. Proletarian: Crimea goes home

It seemed that President Yanukovych could be cajoled and bullied into signing a trade deal with the EU that would tie Ukraine to imperialist interests at the expense of its own people and Russia. But at the last moment, Yanukovich refused to sign, realising he could not impose IMF restructuring plans to the general population. This was his mortal sin, as far as the US and EU were concerned.
Over three months, fascist 'protesters' graduated from placard-waving to violent provocations, seizures of administrative centres and intimidation against the MPs of the elected Party of the Regions, as well as from the Communist Party with which it was allied. Yet 'our' western media portrayed the fascists as the latest expression of 'democratic people power' against 'tyranny', demonised the elected government, and sabotaged all efforts to resolve the crisis through negotiation.
Resistance grows
In major cities throughout the industrialised east (where the Russian-speaking proletariat is strong), thousands have come onto the streets to denounce the coup and oppose the illegally installed fascist 'government'. In Kharkov, Lugansk, Donetsk and other key industrial towns throughout eastern Ukraine, determined mass resistance to the fascist coup has been gathering unstoppable momentum.
Crimea voted by an overwhelming majority of 96.77 percent to join the Russian Federation. The number of Soviet flags and portraits of Stalin that are evident in nearly every demonstration, shows that strong sentiment exists among the masses not only for reunification with Russia, but also for the reconstitution of the USSR as a fraternal socialist union of working people of all nationalities.

It is a government system that accepts responsibility to make the economic system work at full energy, using the device of state-created purchasing power effected by means of government borrowing and spending, and which organizes the economic life of the people into industrial and professional groups to subject the system to control under the supervision of the state.

As for why meldonium ended up on the banned list, anti-doping agencies found meldonium in about 2% of control samples they tested randomly, and they've noticed chatter on websites touting the drug as a performance enhancer....

A survivor of the Auschwitz death camp is now the world's oldest man, the Guinness World Records organisation says. Yisrael Kristal was born near Zarnow in Poland in 1903 and lived through two world wars before moving to the Israeli city of Haifa. He was 112 years and 178 days old on 11 March, Guinness World Records says. The previous oldest-recorded man, Yasutaro Koide of Japan, died in January aged 112 years and 312 days ... ....
