Venice (Italian: Venezia [veˈnɛttsja] (
listen), Venetian: Venexia [veˈnɛsja]; (Latin: Venetia) is a city in northeast Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artworks. The city in its entirety is listed as World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 60,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazioni of Mestre and Marghera; 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE) (population 1,600,000).

Known as The City Of Bridges, Venice has hundreds to explore. The Accademia Bridge links the San Marco district to the Accademia Gallery, and offers some of the Grand Canal’s finest views. The oldest of the Grand Canal’s four crossings is the Rialto Bridge, which today still serves as the gateway to the Rialto Markets. The most famous of all is the Bridge of Sighs, which connects Doge’s Palace to the historic prison.
Venice is a city to get lost in, so put away your map and let her surprise you. Discover waterfront promenades of The Zattere and the sleepy canals and spacious piazzas of Castello. On the tiny island of Murano, glassmakers have been creating works of incredible delicacy and color for over 700 years. Further across the lagoon, the island of Burano is famed for its brightly colored houses and exquisite lace.
Venice has shone her light into the far corners of the world for over one and a half thousand years. Just remember, this city smiles upon those who linger. So stay for a few nights, or stay for a month, and savor every moment she has to offer.

Let us take a boat trip to the island of lagoons, to the Lido, to Murano, which is famous of its glass makers and to the colorful Burano.

1. People-watching & murals
You will see strange and weird characters, to guys working out on the beach, skate boarders, paddle ballers and really eclectic performers.
Are you a fan of art? See how many murals can you find along the boardwalk. The neighborhood is a huge mural museum.
2. California style workouts
Californians love their sun and outdoor activities, so what makes Venice Beach one of the best boardwalks in the world are its free recreational facilities. Surprisingly, the beach boardwalk houses a skate park, basketball courts, paddle ball courts and bike paths; and of course, it's also got the beach!
3. Muscle Beach
For those who aren't shy about doing their workout in public, don't mind a little California tan, they go to Muscle Beach. Muscle Beach was originally founded in 1930 and was located near the Santa Monica Pier. It was known for bodybuilding and acrobatics. Although the original landmark has closed, the Muscle Beach Venice has picked up its tradition and contains an outdoor weight-lifting gym for folks to work out in. Many bodybuilding celebrities have graced its turf from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Larry Scott and Hulk Hogan.

Venice Beach has got a lot of shopping from unique artwork and crafts sold by boardwalk artists or you can buy souvenirs and clothing from store vendors.

The Chorus Pass includes entry to 16 of Venice's churches, including the spectacular Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and the church of Santa Maria Formosa. The pass is valid for one year and is available for purchase online, at the tourist office and from participating churches.
The Museum Pass allows entry to 10 civic museums, including the Doge's Palace. The ticket is valid for six months and allows a single admission to each museum.
Basilica dei Frari (Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari)
The glorious gothic Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, constructed around 1330, is primarily associated with the name of Titian, Venice's painter son who is buried here, alongside the city's celebrated sculptor, Antonio Canova. Titian made his reputation and crowned his early years by painting the huge altar piece, The Assumption of the Virgin, for the Franciscan brothers of the Frari in 1518. Titian also executed the painting over the Pesaro family altar in the north aisle. The inclusion of the flag and Turk in the painting alludes to Bishop Pesaro's victory over the Turks at Santa Maura. Titian's tomb, located in the south aisle, faces the large marble pyramid created for Canova, depicting St Mark's lion paying homage to the dead sculptor. Ironically, the design, executed by Canova's pupils, was based on Canova's own plans for a new monument to Titian.

Built on a plan of a Greek cross, its Eastern appearance is enhanced by golden mosaics, originally created by craftsmen from the Byzantine court at Ravenna. The interior houses many of Venice's greatest treasures, including the venerated icon of the Madonna Nicopeia. The golden screen behind the high altar - the crypt in which St Mark is supposed to be buried - is the Pala d'Oro, beautifully crafted with sapphires, emeralds and rubies and inset with enamels from Constantinople. Before leaving St Mark's, visitors should pause to admire the 12th-century pavement, a resplendent mosaic of glass and marble. It is possible to book online to avoid the long queues at www.venetoinside.com

The bell tower, which is located to one side of St Mark's Square, is the tallest structure in Venice and offers a unique view of this fabulous city. At 318 ft (97m) high, visitors prepared to make the lengthy climb can look out over the rooftops of the city. In a strange twist, the view from the top can be good enough on a clear day to catch a glimpse of the distant dolomites, but doesn't allow for a view of any of the canals. The tower collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt exactly as before.

The Chorus Pass includes entry to 16 of Venice's churches, including the spectacular Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and the church of Santa Maria Formosa. The pass is valid for one year and is available for purchase online, at the tourist office and from participating churches.
The Museum Pass allows entry to 10 civic museums, including the Doge's Palace. The ticket is valid for six months and allows a single admission to each museum.

The glorious gothic Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, constructed around 1330, is primarily associated with the name of Titian, Venice's painter son who is buried here, alongside the city's celebrated sculptor, Antonio Canova. Titian made his reputation and crowned his early years by painting the huge altar piece, The Assumption of the Virgin, for the Franciscan brothers of the Frari in 1518. Titian also executed the painting over the Pesaro family altar in the north aisle. The inclusion of the flag and Turk in the painting alludes to Bishop Pesaro's victory over the Turks at Santa Maura. Titian's tomb, located in the south aisle, faces the large marble pyramid created for Canova, depicting St Mark's lion paying homage to the dead sculptor. Ironically, the design, executed by Canova's pupils, was based on Canova's own plans for a new monument to Titian.

At 318 ft (97m) high, visitors prepared to make the lengthy climb can look out over the rooftops of the city. In a strange twist, the view from the top can be good enough on a clear day to catch a glimpse of the distant dolomites, but doesn't allow for a view of any of the canals. The tower collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt exactly as before.

In a blog post, the Waterloo, Ontario, smartphone maker released photos of the Priv, which is expected to launch in the fourth quarter.
Priv stands for both "privacy and privilege," according to BlackBerry CEO John Chen, and it's the company's first product to run on Google's Android mobile software. The device underscores a radical departure from BlackBerry's history of selling products using its own homegrown software. After years of battling Android, the world's most popular operating system for smartphones and tablets, BlackBerry is embracing what its much larger rival has to offer.

"Priv users will enjoy choice, innovation, security, privacy and productivity. In other words, no compromises," BlackBerry said in its blog post, showing off the new photos.
The company has not released prices or a specific release date yet for the Priv, which will sport a 5.5-inch curved screen and a slider keyboard. In a video interview with Business News Network on Friday, Chen showed off the new phone, but the demonstration didn't go so smoothly.
With little audience enthusiasm for the BlackBerry operating system, a shift to Android on a single phone so far may not do much to beef up BlackBerry's mobile phone business at this point. Once a dominant force in the mobile phone market, especially among white-collar workers, BlackBerry has lost much of its business to players such as Apple and Samsung.

BlackBerry on Tuesday revealed the first photos of its security-focused Android smartphone, the Priv.
In a blog post, the Waterloo, Ontario, smartphone maker released photos of the Priv, which is expected to launch in the fourth quarter.
Priv stands for both "privacy and privilege," according to BlackBerry CEO John Chen, and it's the company's first product to run on Google's Android mobile software. The device underscores a radical departure from BlackBerry's history of selling products using its own homegrown software. After years of battling Android, the world's most popular operating system for smartphones and tablets, BlackBerry is embracing what its much larger rival has to offer.

"Priv users will enjoy choice, innovation, security, privacy and productivity. In other words, no compromises," BlackBerry said in its blog post, showing off the new photos.
The company has not released prices or a specific release date yet for the Priv, which will sport a 5.5-inch curved screen and a slider keyboard. In a video interview with Business News Network on Friday, Chen showed off the new phone, but the demonstration didn't go so smoothly.
With little audience enthusiasm for the BlackBerry operating system, a shift to Android on a single phone so far may not do much to beef up BlackBerry's mobile phone business at this point. Once a dominant force in the mobile phone market, especially among white-collar workers, BlackBerry has lost much of its business to players such as Apple and Samsung.

Venice's mayor has hit back after singer Elton John attacked the city's decision to withdraw books featuring same-sex couples from schools.
Luigi Brugnaro removed 49 books from school libraries after being elected in June, though some have been reinstated.
In an Instagram post, John, who has two children with his husband, called Venice's mayor "boorishly bigoted".
Mr Brugnaro has now defended his decision and called the British singer "arrogant" in a series of tweets.

He told John, who has a house in Venice, to contribute more to the city, and said he "represented the arrogance of someone who is rich and can do whatever they want".
Mr Brugnaro, who says he belongs to neither the left nor right, also said he had "no problems with homosexuals" and was "a free man" who was not afraid of insults.
His election pledge to withdraw the books featuring same-sex couples and gender issues attracted controversy.
"I have to think about the majority of families where there is a mother and a father," Mr Brugnaro said.
More than 250 Italian authors asked Venice's authorities to remove their books from libraries as a gesture of solidarity.
While many of the books were returned to school libraries, some were not, including Francesca Pardi's Piccolo Uovo (Little Egg), about an egg that discovers new types of families.
Ophelie Texier's French book Jean a Deux Mamans (Jean Has Two Mummies) is also still banned.John's Instagram post said Mr Brugnaro was "extremely silly-looking".
"Instead of encouraging a world based on inclusiveness, tolerance and love, he's championing a future society that's divisive and fosters ignorance," he wrote.
"Beautiful Venice is indeed sinking, but not as fast as the boorishly bigoted Brugnaro."
In March, John called for a boycott of the fashion brand Dolce and Gabbana after the designers made what he called "archaic" comments on in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and same-sex parents.
In an interview with Italian news magazine Panorama, the designers called children born of IVF "synthetic" and said they opposed adoption by same-sex parents.

One of the most popular videos of our Venice Biennale 2007 coverage is Isa Genzken’s exhibition at the German pavilion. Reason enough to give it the r3 treatment, so you can watch it in HD. Isa Genzken’s primary media are sculpture and installation, using a wide variety of materials and objects, including wood, plaster, textile, mirrors, mannequins, dolls, posters, suitcases, and other found objects. She also works with photography, video and film.
In 2014, Genzken had a huge retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, following survey exhibitions in 2009 at Museum Ludwig in Cologne (Germany) and 2010 at Museion Bolzano (Italy).

The videos, which were filmed in portrait mode (UGH) and posted to the social media site by Carlotta Menegazzo (1, 2), depict a large, cone tornado as it destroyed homes, businesses, and mowed down trees near the town of 40,000. A large amount of debris is seen swirling through the air and smacking into the ground and the car, including a gas station that’s heavily damaged just a few feet in front of the vehicle.
As of the publication of this post, no news organizations have picked up stories of damage or casualties as a result of this severe weather outbreak, but weather models and satellite imagery lend authenticity to the video as there were strong to severe thunderstorms in the area at the time. The infrared satellite image above from 12:00 PM EDT, or 6:00 PM in Venice, shows a strong storm over the region around the time Menegazzo says in a Facebook comment that she encountered the tornado.
Even though it gives us great visuals, Menegazzo and those in the vehicle with her were entirely too close to that tornado. The safest distance between you and a tornado is as far away as humanly possible—even weak tornadoes can toss cars around like toys, and the trauma that cars sustain in twisters doesn’t usually bode well for the occupants inside.
