Carletonville

Carletonville is a gold-mining town with one of the deepest mines at 3,749 m and fairly high population density of 1,400/km2. The town has produced diverse personalities such as a porn star, to world-class cricketer Brian McMillan and actors and footballers.

There are no fewer than seven mines surrounding the town and the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve counteracts the industry, lies just outside Carletonville – a sanctuary of grassland and wetland where bird spotting is well rewarded with the prospect of seeing at least 60 species on any given morning.

Visit an Iron Age Settlement via The Losberg hiking trail or see caves. There is a skydiving club based in the town and the Danie Theron Monument and Ireland-Bergh Memorial Stone and Oosthuizen Monument are worth a visit. Other attractions are the Ancient sinkhole and Gold Mine Tours or you can play golf at the Goldfields West Golf Course with nosey springbok, blesbok, impala and zebras. Par three 6th plays from an elevated tee down to a green guarded by a dam and bunkers on either side.
