A boat trip from Marsamxett Harbour along Malta's eastern and southern coast to the islet of Filfla. Along the way we pass by Fort Tigne', Fort St. Elmo, Fort Ricasoli, Rinella Battery, Fort Leonardo (limits of Żabbar), Fort Delimara and Fort Bengħajsa as well as a number of coastal towers erected by the Knights of Malta among which Grand Master Wignacourt's St. Thomas Tower in Marsascala and St. Lucian Tower in Marsaxlokk. We also see three of Grand Master De Redin's coastal towers, namely Triq il-Wiesgħa (between Xagħjra and Żonqor Point), Wardija (Bubaqra) and Ħamrija (near Mnajdra Temples). We pass by Wied iż-Żurrieq where we see the Blue Grotto and Ta' Xuta Tower, erected by Grand Master Lascaris. We also pass by a number of valleys including Wied ix-Xoqqa and Wied Mixta (Birżebbugia), Wied Żnuber (Ħal Far) and Wied Fulija, Wied Moqbol, Wied il-Bassasa and Wied Babu (all in the vicinity of Żurrieq). Several caves are visible in Malta's southern cliffs including Għar Ħasan and Għar in-Nagħaġ, that leads from Wied Mixta and emerges in the cliff face. We pass by also Il-Ħaġra tas-Sajjetta and the rock formation known as Il-Mara. We visit Il-Ħofra ż-Żgħira near Xrobb l-Għagin and pass by Ras il-Fenek, Il-Ħofra l-Kbira and the white globigerina cliffs of the Munxar headland, near St. Thomas Bay. Fort Ricazoli. Malta. 2015.
During World War II the foot-bridge on the Valletta side of the breakwater was destroyed when, at dawn on the 26th July 1941, the E-boat unit of the Italian Regia Marina attacked the breakwater in a savage, but futile, attempt to gain access into the harbour. The Italians paid a heavy price, as all the attacking vessels were destroyed in the counter-attack which involved guns on Fort Saint Elmo and Fort Ricasoli, as well as those further afield.
These guns are currently in the water after apparently having had been stored (or dumped) in an area in ricasoli fort which was situated above a shore cavern. The Cavern's roof gave way (probably thanks to erosion) and the guns ended up on the sea bottom. Great dive to and from the nearest water entry (about 20 min slow dive) but watch out for entry/exit. Shallow dive all the way tot he guns and back, if you hug the coastline you'll never be deeper than 10m, ideal for free divers or relatively easy diving.

Buffalo News 2013-12-05Fort Ricasoli is a large fortification on the island of Malta. The fort was built by the Knights of Malta between 1670 and 1693.
It occupies the promontory known as Gallows Point that forms the eastern arm of Grand Harbour, and the north shore of Rinella Creek. Together with Fort St. Elmo and Fort Tigné it commands the approaches to Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour.
It was designed by the Italian military engineer Antonio Maurizio Valperga, as part of Grand Master Nicholas Cottoner's extensive fortifications around Grand Harbour. It is named for the knight who financed a large part of the works, Fra Giovanni Francesco Ricasoli.
The Fort continued to be an active military installation throughout the British period.
It was the scene of a mutiny in 1807 when Sicilian soldiers of the Froberg Regiment revolted and shut themselves up in Fort Ricasoli. Despite attempts at negotiation they eventually blew up the powder magazine. The mutiny was quashed by loyal troops, and 30 mutineers were condemned to death by court martial.
