Remember that the key to pronunciation s physical and the name tells us about how the sound is made physically. In this case your tongue is high and at the front of your mouth. Unrounded refers to your lips because they are stretched out as if you are smiling and not rounded.

TRANSCRIPT
Hi, we are talking about differentiating vowel sounds. Before we do, go into specific vowel sounds, we need to understand a few things how the mouth actually changes or the mouth shape actually change the sound of a vowel sound. Particularly with a an English pronunciation. If you see here in the board I have drawn up a quadrilateral which is basically the space within the mouth cavity where the tongue can actually mouth up and around and play with sounds. Now, if I want to be silly and I am going to be, I am going to put my face up against here. This is basically compressed and into this area of my mouth in here. So along here where would my tongue normally sit. This is what I would call a mid-position (showing position of mouth).
If I look more at a close position, I would look at (showing position of mouth).
If I look at an open position, I would be looking at a (showing position). So I am going to give you those three position again, and this time I am going to work with the work with the vowels I have actually put in here. Just for the interest as well, this is the front of the mouth, this is the back of the mouth.
- if we make sounds which are based in the front is usually going to involve a lip spread
- at the back it is going to involve a round mouth
- the more close the jaw is, close the jaw is, the more spread or rounding there is.
- We have vowels which work along the front which use the front of the tongue
- there are vowels in the middle
- and there are vowels in the back
-Front of the mouth consists of open, mid and close position of the jaw
- "examples of sounds"
- I am giving you English pronunciation as a neutral standard English accent.
- If you are looking for other accents there is always a difference in the tongue and mouth positions. This is why we have different sounds an accents.
- "Explanation of sounds and mouth positions"
- Part 3 is about Clarifying consonants.

This video is part of our series on phonetics and pronunciation for learners of English as a foreign language.
Phonetics is the science of pronunciation. It can be helpful for people learning English because one of the most difficult things about the language is the spelling and pronunciation. English is not very phonetic and as a result the same letters are often pronounced in many different ways in different words.
The IPA helps by providing a way to write words as they are pronounced. The normal alphabet only has 26 characters but there are 44 different sounds that are used to pronounce words. As well as that, most word in English originate from other languages like Greek, Latin and French to name just a few and in many cases the the language of origin influences how the word is pronounced.
The IPA provides a symbol (phoneme) for each sound so the correct pronunciation can be written or printed in dictionaries.
