Of the many questionable ideas that Prime Minister Netanyahu allows to dictate his foreign policy include a literal interpretation of biblical texts, comparing others to Nazis, and flip flopping on major issues like Iran and Nuclear policy. Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu Slams Iran In Speech At UN | Iran Nuclear Deal | Iran threat to Israel
Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu anyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, slamming the world body for its indifference to Iranian threats to wipe Israel off the map and for encouraging Palestinian rejectionism.
Netanyahu said that the Iran deal "doesn't make peace more likely," but by giving Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief the deal makes war more likely
PM rails against the UN in his speech to the General Assembly, slamming support for the Iran deal and anti-Israel bias on Palestinian issue.
The prime minister began his speech by saying that 31 years ago he stood at the podium for the first time as an ambassador, and spoke about Iran's proposal to expel Israel from the UN.
Netanyahu gave an overview of the Iranian support for terrorism and for undermining Arab regimes in the region.
Regarding the nuclear deal signed between Iran and the West, the prime minister said that the "vast majority" of Israelis believe it to be "a very bad deal."
He also said Israel will continue to respond to every attack from Syria, and will continue to stop arms transfer to Hezbollah through Syria.
"The days when the Jewish people stayed silent are over," Netanyahu later said. "No one should question Israel's determination to defend ourselves against those who seek our destruction."
To decry what he described as UN inaction on the Iranian threat to Israel's existence, Netanyahu took a long, silent pause.
The prime minister stressed the strength of the alliance between Israel and the U.S., calling the differences in opinion with regard to the Iran deal "a disagreement within the family."
Netanyahu further stated Israel is committed to achieving peace with the Palestinians.
"I remain committed to the vision of two states for two peoples," he said.
"Israel expects the Palestinians to implement their commitments and not walk away," he said.
He called on the UN to aid the peace process by promoting negotiations without preconditions, and by stopping the "obsessive bashing of Israel."

wn.com/Israeli Prime Minister Criticized For Questionable Policies
"Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) host of The Young Turks discusses the questionable policies held by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Of the many questionable ideas that Prime Minister Netanyahu allows to dictate his foreign policy include a literal interpretation of biblical texts, comparing others to Nazis, and flip flopping on major issues like Iran and Nuclear policy. This has lead the Israeli leader to isolate and turn off many in the U.S. government, that see him as a show boat or who say that many of his claims are simply not true."
Is the Prime Minister right? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's Hawkish Speech At Congress
"Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) host of The Young Turks discusses the most recent fiery speech blasted at Congress by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after he failed to clear the planned address with the White House.
In the speech Prime Minister Netanyahu warned the U.S. against accepting a nuclear deal with Iran, stating that he firmly believed it would not prevent Iran from creating nuclear weapons in what is basically his backyard. He also openly criticized Obama and his administration for their handling of Iran. Some are calling the speech 'inappropriate' and even 'wrong' about some of its facts.
President Obama and other important officials in his administration are refusing to meet with the Prime Minister, citing a desire not to foil foreign affairs, referencing Israel's upcoming March 17th elections. This comes on the heels of already strained relations between President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu."
Has the Prime Minister put an unnecessary strain on U.S./Israeli relations? Or was his speech a valid warning? Let us know what you think in the comments section.

ISRAEL: ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU AND YASSER ARAFAT MEETING
Natural Sound
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat met Wednesday in an ice-breaking summit.
After recent speculation over the future of the peace process, the two leaders met face to face at the Erez checkpoint in Gaza.
It is Netanyahu's first encounter with the Palestinian leader whom he had long condemned as a terrorist.
As Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's convoy arrived at the Erez checkpoint in Gaza Wednesday security was tight for the historic meeting.
Helicopters hovered above as Palestinian leader Arafat arrived to meet with Netanyahu.
Despite the tight security and the uncertainty of where the meeting would eventually take place, it is clearly a positive step in relations between the two sides.
The leaders did not speak to the assembled press as they walked in for the meeting.
The negotiations leading up to the summit were spearheaded by Norwegian diplomat Terje Larsen who is the senior UN official in the Gaza Strip.
He helped assemble a package agreement that addressed key issues such as withdrawing Israeli troops from the West Bank town of Hebron and the operation of a
Palestinian airport.
They are also to discuss the release of Palestinian prisoners and an easing of Israel's six-month closure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Arafat had asked for nearly 70-thousand work permits to be issued so Palestinians can return to jobs in Israel.
The closure was imposed after a series of suicide bombings by Islamic militants in Israel in the spring.
Netanyahu had asked Arafat to renegotiate the terms of a Hebron troop pullback to better ensure the safety of 450 Jewish settlers living in the heart of the city of 94-thousand Palestinians.
An Arafat-Netanyahu meeting would constitute the first recognition of the Palestinian leader by an Israeli premier from the Likud Party, which long opposed Israel-PLO
peacemaking.

Israel has arrested five alleged Hamas militants over the West Bank killing of a Jewish settler couple, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged an iron fist against mounting unrest.
Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian teenager -- the second killing in 24 hours -- as dozens were wounded in fresh clashes in the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem.
The spike in violence has brought international calls for calm, with concerns the unrest could spin out of control and memories of previous Palestinian uprisings -- so-called "intifada" -- still fresh.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Monday to take strong action and defeat what he called a "wave of terror." In a statement, Netanyahu said Israel is increasing its anti-terror operations with thousands of police in Jerusalem and more soldiers in the West Bank.
The move comes after a rise in violence over the past five days.
On Thursday, an Israeli couple were shot and killed in the West Bank in front of their four children, officials said. Five people were arrested Monday in the shooting, lsrael's Securities Authority spokesperson said in a statement.

Prime Minister of Israel
The Prime Minister of Israel is the head of the Israeli government and the most powerful figure in Israeli politics. Although the President of Israel is the country's head of state and nominal chief executive, his powers are largely ceremonial; the Prime Minister holds most of the real power. The official residence of the prime minister, Beit Rosh Hamemshala is in Jerusalem. The current prime minister is Benjamin Netanyahu of Likud, the ninth person to hold the position.
Following an election, the President nominates a member of the Knesset to become prime minister after asking party leaders whom they support for the position. The nominee then presents a government platform and must receive a vote of confidence in order to become prime minister. In practice, the prime minister is usually the leader of the largest party in the governing coalition.

Israel razes militants' homes amid mounting unrest
The Israeli military on Tuesday demolished homes of two Palestinian militants in east Jerusalem following a late-night cabinet meeting in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised a "strong hand" to quell recent deadly attacks.
The demolitions come amid weeks of heightened Palestinian unrest in east Jerusalem and the West Bank and a bloody holiday weekend in which four Israelis were killed in shooting and stabbing attacks. Israeli forces have killed four Palestinians during violent protests.
The violence threatens a new Israeli-Palestinian escalation at a time when a political solution to the conflict is increasingly distant and Palestinian frustrations are mounting after years of diplomatic paralysis.
The homes demolished early Tuesday belonged to the families of a man who killed four worshippers and a police officer in a Jerusalem synagogue last year, and a second attacker who killed one person when he rammed a bulldozer into traffic. Although the attackers were immediately killed, Israel often carries out such demolitions of the homes of militants' families, believing it will deter future attacks.
'ISRAEL'S GOVERNMENT WANTS TO BE SEEN TO BE ACTING'
Also Tuesday, troops sealed off a room at the home of a third attacker, who tried to kill a prominent Orthodox Jewish activist last year, ahead of its potential demolition.
"If Netanyahu thinks that this will create deterrence, then he is wrong. This will not deter anybody," said Odai Hijazi, whose brother Motaz shot and seriously wounded Yehuda Glick, a Jewish nationalist who has campaigned for greater Jewish access to a sensitive Jerusalem holy site.
Thousands of Israelis, including three ministers in Netanyahu's own government, demonstrated outside the prime minister's home on Monday night, demanding tough action.
The rash of violence began Thursday when Palestinian gunmen killed an Israeli couple in their car near a settlement in the West Bank as their four children watched from the backseat.
Two days later, a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli man to death, seriously wounded his wife and lightly injuring their 2-year-old toddler as they walked in Jerusalem's Old City. He proceeded to stab another Israeli man to death and then opened fire at tourists and police before he was shot and killed by policemen who had rushed to the scene.
Israeli forces killed another Palestinian assailant over the weekend and on Monday the troops shot dead two teenagers - including a 13-year-old boy - who were throwing stones during clashes with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.
Undercover Israeli troops later raided a Nablus hospital and nabbed a wounded Palestinian suspected of killing the Israeli couple.
Israeli intelligence said the Palestinian gunman had been accidentally shot by his friend as they killed the Israelis in Thursday's drive-by shooting, prompting them to flee the scene and likely saving the lives of the four children in the back seat.
Netanyahu said Israel has also deployed thousands more troops in the crackdown.

Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly on October 1st, 2015.
He renewed his warning that the Iranian nuclear deal threatens to destabilize the Middle East and will make war more likely. He cautioned that already Iran is ramping up efforts to fund terrorist cells worldwide, while also arming Islamists in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories.
Netanyahu stated that Iran is increasing its own armament stockpiles and that billions of dollars in sanctions relief would only fuel the effort. He reminded the nations of the world that Iran already has the capability to target Israel with ballistic weapons and that it’s current ballistic missiles efforts can only be meant to threaten Europe and the United States.
Prime Minister Netanyahu chastised the member states of the U.N. for their failure to speak out against Iranian threats to destroy Israel and that their conspicuous silence was deafening. He emphasized this point by staring at the delegates in silence for 44 seconds.
Netanyahu responded to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s declaration the previous day that it would no longer honor the Oslo Peace Accords by offering to reopen peace talks with the PA without any conditions. He also rejected the assertion by Abbas that Israel intended to change the status of the al-Asqa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, a Palestinian allegation that has recently fomented violent incidents. He noted that Israel goes to great lengths to ensure the safety of the shrines of all religions in the Holy Land.
Prime Minister Netanyahu pleaded with U.N. member states to cease decades of anti Israeli rhetoric, and to undertake an honest effort to work toward an Israeli – Palestinian peace agreement.

Israeli army shoots two Palestinian teenagers dead
Tension is mounting in Jerusalem and the West Bank as clashes continue between Palestinians and the Israeli army.
Violence at the weekend cost the lives of four Israelis, and on overnight and on Monday two young teenagers were shot dead by Israeli soldiers for alleged stone-throwing and unrest.
The prime minister has promised the toughest response to the latest outbreak of killing.
“I convened the heads of Israel’s security forces and I have ordered a series of additional steps in order to prevent terror and to deter and punish the perpetrators,” said Benjamin Netanyahu.
The funeral of one of the shot boys took place in Balaa, near Tulkarem, an occasion for the venting of frustration at the over two decades since a peace deal appeared close, only for the vision to disappear.
“Our people and our new generation born after the Oslo accords want to finish this agreement now, through this kind of resistance, their own resistance, because they are suffering daily insults,” said Palestinian MP Hassan Khresha.
“What we need now from all the world, especially from the European union is to tell the truth, and to send international help to protect our Palestinian people,” said Fatah representative Moued Shaaban.
There have been increasing signs the Palestinian leadership shares this frustration, and may be about to return to civil disobedience in order to inject some energy into the moribund peace initiative.
“Mutual anger and escalation between the two sides threatens to worsen the situation which means more bloodshed unless the international community intervenes to achieve a political solution or compromise that can satisfy both parties,” reports euronews’s Mohammed Shaikibrahim.

Israel launches airstrikes on targets in Gaza
Israeli fighter jets have launched airstrikes on targets in Gaza overnight, in response to what they say was rocket fire from the coastal enclave.
It comes as violence intensifies in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, after two Israelis were killed in a stabbing attack and a Palestinian man was killed in a clash with Israeli soldiers in Tulkarm.
In recent weeks, Israeli police and Palestinians have clashed frequently at the al-Aqsa mosque compound in East Jerusalem. Israel has promised to retain Muslim prayer rites at the holy site, but has often refused entry to young Palestinian men citing security concerns. In response to the stabbing attacks, Palestinians have been banned from entering the walled Old City by police.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a harsh response to the apparent upsurge in violence saying the country was in an “all-out war against terror”.
The latest bloodshed, which also includes a drive-by shooting in the West Bank that killed an Israeli couple, has triggered fears of wider escalation – especially in the absence of peace talks that collapsed in 2014.

Tel Aviv starts demolishing homes of Palestinians accused of attacking Israeli forces
Israel has started razing homes belonging to three Palestinians accused of attacking Israeli forces in the occupied territories.
Israeli troops demolished one house in East Jerusalem-al-Quds in the early hours of Tuesday. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed his cabinet ministers to speed up the demolitions. Benjamin Netanyahu also called for deploying more troops in Jerusalem-al-Quds and ordered a harsh crackdown on Palestinians who are active on social media. He further called for heavier fines against the parents of minors who throw stones and Molotov cocktails at Israeli forces. Netanyahu said he would quote-fight to the death against what he called Palestinian terror. Earlier, Israel announced a series of measures which would expand the use of detention without trial for Palestinians.

Israel demolishes homes of Palestinian attackers as clashes escalate
Binyamin Netanyahu promises ‘harsh’ action after days of rising violence, as protests mount at prime minister’s handling of crisis
Israeli security forces have demolished the homes of two Palestinians behind lethal attacks on Israelis last year, and sealed off another, following prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s threat of “harsh” action amid sharply mounting unrest.
The acceleration of the controversial policy of house demolitions was one of a package of measures announced in recent days by Netanyahu to quell days of escalating violence between Palestinians and Israelis, amid mounting criticism of Netanyahu’s leadership.
Analysis Is a third Palestinian intifada on the way – or has it already begun?
Violence is escalating but it is not yet clear whether Palestinian society is united in a desire for another prolonged period of unrest

The houses destroyed were the former homes of Ghassan Abu Jamal and Mohammed Jaabis. Abu Jamal, with his cousin Uday Abu Jamal, killed four rabbis and a police officer in a bloody attack on a Jerusalem synagogue in 2014, before being shot and killed.
Jaabis rammed an earthmover into a bus in August, killing an Israeli and wounding several others. He was shot dead by police at the scene.
The demolitions took place hours after several thousand largely right-wing Israelis demonstrated outside Netanyahu’s home to protest his handling of the crisis.
The protest was attended by prominent figures in Israel’s national religious and right-wing political communities, including MPs from Netanyahu’s own Likud party, amid concern that the current tensions are in danger of being transformed into a new intifada (uprising).
Netanyahu has also faced criticism within his own cabinet, including from right-wing education minister Naftali Bennett and justice minister Ayelet Shaked, whom sources in the prime minister’s office accused of exploiting the current unrest “for political gain”.
Shaked had told Israel’s Channel 2 she believed the government was not doing enough to fight terrorism.
Among calls from right-wingers at the rally was for Netanyahu to respond to violence with more settlement building in the occupied Palestinian territories.
“The right answer, the only answer for terror, is to build and build and build,” Likud MP Oren Hazan told reporters at the demonstration.
The demolitions come after clashes have spread in east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank in recent days following the deaths of four Israelis.
Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian teenager on Monday – the second killing in 24 hours – as dozens were wounded in fresh clashes.
Netanyahu has announced a series of new security measures and right-wing politicians have been pushing for demolitions to move forward.
The spike in violence has brought international calls for calm, with concerns the unrest could spin out of control and memories of previous Palestinian uprisings still fresh.
Two Palestinian youths, aged 13 and 18, have been killed by Israeli forces in the last 24 hours, and another was in a critical state on Monday night after clashes in east Jerusalem.
Clashes also erupted in the West Bank and Bethlehem, where police responded with live bullets and tear gas to gangs of angry Palestinian youths, while Jewish settlers also fought with Palestinians.
At the flashpoint Israeli settlement of Beit El, violence erupted after a stand-off by around 50 students, who started throwing stones at soldiers while still carrying their school bags.
“It’s our duty, we are on our land and they shoot at us,” said one hooded 21-year-old Palestinian among the throwers. Another masked 18-year-old nearby said he hoped for “a third intifada”.

PM Asks Justice Minister to Expedite Demolition of Terrorists' Homes
During a cabinet meeting that lasted more than five hours, Education Minister Bennett demands settlements be built after every terror attack; Israeli forces demolish two homes of convicted terrorists and seal off another.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked to establish a mechanism that would significantly shorten the legal process when dealing with the demolition of terrorist homes, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement late on Monday.
The prime minister's decision was made during a security cabinet meeting, which was convened at 9 P.M. and ended at 3 A.M.
During the meeting, Netanyahu has instructed security forces to take decisive action to prevent Israeli citizens from taking the law into their own hands, the statement said. In addition, the prime minister demanded that police would act forcefully against incitement to violence and terrorism on social media.

Teenager killed as Israel cracks down on Palestinian unrest
Israel announced harsher measures to tackle Palestinian violence on Monday as a Palestinian teenager was killed in a clash with Israeli soldiers near the West Bank town of Bethlehem, a Palestinian hospital source said.
Violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Jerusalem has intensified in the past few weeks and the teenager’s reported death was the latest in a series of incidents that has raised fears of wider escalation.
A Bethlehem hospital said a 13-year-old boy identified as Abdel-Rahman Abeidallah of the nearby al-Aidah refugee camp died of a bullet wound to the heart.
The Israeli military said it had no specific information. Recent bloodshed has included a drive-by shooting that killed an Israeli couple in the West Bank on Thursday and an arson attack that killed a Palestinian toddler and his parents in July.
Israel said it had arrested five men from the West Bank city of Nablus on suspicion of carrying out Thursday’s drive-by shooting.
Other incidents involving Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli security forces continued without respite on Monday. The Red Crescent ambulance service said some 170 Palestinians were injured.
Late on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet, a close circle of ministers, to authorise the harsher measures to tackle the rising violence in East Jerusalem, which includes the walled Old City, and the West Bank, areas that Israel captured in a 1967 war.
In broadcast remarks before the meeting, Netanyahu said Israel would respond strongly “against terrorism and against inciters”. He said four more army battalions had been deployed in the West Bank and thousands of police had been stationed in Jerusalem.
“The police are going deeply into the Arab neighbourhoods, which has not been done in the past. We will demolish terrorists’ homes. We are allowing our forces to take strong action against those who throw rocks and fire bombs,” he said.
But settlers and right-wingers were unimpressed and thousands protested near Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem to decry the government’s “lack of resolve” in fighting Palestinian attacks and ensuring their safety.
In Gaza, Sami Abu Zuhri, the spokesman for Islamist Hamas, which runs the coastal enclave said Israel’s harsher measures would not manage “to switch off the protests”.
Tensions have been inflamed in particular by frequent clashes between Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli security forces at Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque compound.
Palestinians have said they fear increasing visits by Jewish groups to al-Aqsa, revered by Jews as the site of biblical temples, are eroding Muslim religious control there. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called for calm, saying it was “unacceptable on either side to have violence resorted to as a solution. ... That kind of violence is not going to serve anybody’s purpose,” he told reporters during a visit to Chile. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed in April 2014.

Israel vows crackdown as 'Hamas 5' held over settler killing
Israel vows crackdown as 'Hamas 5' held over settler killing
Speaking as security forces announced the arrest of the alleged Hamas members over last week's shooting of the couple in front of their four children, Netanyahu said no attackers were beyond reach.
"We are not prepared to give immunity to anybody, not to any rioter... or any terrorist, anywhere, and therefore there are no limits on the activities of the security forces," he said ahead of a special session of his security cabinet.
A joint statement by the police, army and Shin Bet domestic security agency said the five men arrested were members of militant group Hamas and had confessed to shooting the Israeli couple in their car in the West Bank.

Israel tightens security, lifts restrictions on forces
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Monday to take strong action and defeat what he called a "wave of terror." In a statement, Netanyahu said Israel is increasing its anti-terror operations with thousands of police in Jerusalem and more soldiers in the West Bank.
The move comes after a rise in violence over the past five days.
On Thursday, an Israeli couple were shot and killed in the West Bank in front of their four children, officials said. Five people were arrested Monday in the shooting, lsrael's Securities Authority spokesperson said in a statement.
Israel's Security Authority said those arrested were members of a cell affiliated with the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Nablus and admitted their involvement in the shooting.
On Saturday, a 19-year-old Palestinian attacked and killed two Israelis with a knife in Jerusalem's Old City, according to authorities.
Police say they killed the attacker in a gun battle. He was identified as Mohannad Shafik Halabi from near Ramallah, in the West Bank.

As the deadline approaches for a deal on Iran’s nuclear program, many in the US and the Middle East remain skeptical that it will prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. With the promise of a breakthrough in the decades-long impasse being weighed against the prospects of nuclear proliferation in the region, any outcome is bound to be controversial. Would a compromise contribute to stability, or will it sow the seeds of future conflict? Oksana is joined by Ehud Barak, the former Prime Minister of Israel, to piece together these issues.

FORCING A DEAL? Ft. Ehud Barak, ex Israeli Prime Minister

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s FULL Speech To Joint Session of Congress | March 3, 2015
Benjamin Netanyahu’s FULL Speech To US Congress | March 3, 2015 | VIDEO
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is about to address a joint session of Congress on the dangers of a possibly impending nuclear deal with Iran, which reportedly involves a 10-15 year restraint on the Iranian nuclear program that would reportedly allow Tehran to operate as many as 6,500 uranium enrichment centrifuges.
The speech (11 a.m. EST) was arranged on the initiative of House Speaker John Boehner. It was not authorized by the executive branch and has already harmed relations between the US and Israel.
The administration is scaling back the information it shares with Israel about the Iran negotiations. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and 56 out of 188 congressional democrats will not be attending the speech. Neither will Secretary of State John Kerry, who will be meeting with Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif in Montreux, Switzerland instead.
Whatever Netanyahu actually says, the purpose of his speech is to build up congressional opposition to the coming deal.
Congress cannot stop a deal on its own, since the accord will be structured as a series of nonbinding political agreements precisely in order to circumvent any constitutional need for US congressional consent. But it can impact a nuclear agreement in other ways.
Congress could refuse to lift the sanctions on Iran that it passed, forcing Obama to affect a deal through a series of executive waivers — and raising the possibility that a future president would simply decide to stop issuing those waivers and re-impose sanctions.
As former US ambassador to Iraq and Washington Institute for Near East Policy scholar James Jeffrey argued, Congress could also strengthen the deal by providing "advance authorization for the administration to use force if Iran races to a weapons capability."
And Jeffrey notes that strategic concert with Iran is also a broader diplomatic project than Obama could possibly implement during his remaining years in office (Jeffrey argues that detente with China actually took decades to implement). Both the current Congress and a future presidential administration could have a role to play in firming up a deal while undercutting Iran's strategic ambitions.
Even if Congress can't cancel out or scuttle a deal, Netanyahu can at least make the case for damage control — and demonstrate that most of the US Congress and even most of the members of Congress from the president's own party are at least willing to hear him out.
The big question is what kind of approach Netanyahu will take.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking to Congress Tuesday morning, attempted to scuttle any potential deal between the U.S. and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear-enrichment capability, one of President Barack Obama’s top foreign-policy initiatives.
PM thanks US for decades of friendship, but warns joint session against an emerging deal that will ‘pave path’ to Iranian nuke
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, March 3, 2015
Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver will not join fellow Democrats in boycotting Tuesday’s controversial speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“As a Member of Congress, I feel it is my duty to attend and listen respectfully,” Cleaver said in a statement.
More than 50 Democrats plan to skip Netanyahu’s speech before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday because they say his appearance undermines President Barack Obama. They are upset that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, invited Netanyhu to speak without clearing it with the White House. The speech also comes at a politically sensitive time as Netanyahu faces re-election in Israel.
Many of those who chose to skip Netanyahu’s speech Tuesday are members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including chairman Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., and Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a civil rights icon.
Cleaver, who previously served as chairman of the caucus, said in a statement Tuesday that he decided to attend Netanyahu’s speech “after much consideration” because it was the civil thing to do.
“This event has added more heat than light to the already acrimonious atmosphere in the halls of Congress,” said Cleaver, a minister who often writes “Dear Colleague” letters to other lawmakers, urging them to tone down bipartisan rancor.
