Moldova (
i/mɒlˈdoʊvə, mɔːl-/ or sometimes UK /ˈmɒldəvə/. Romanian: [molˈdova]), officially the Republic of Moldova (Romanian: Republica Moldova, 
listen ), is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The capital city is Chișinău.
Moldova declared independence on August 27, 1991 as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The current Constitution of Moldova was adopted in 1994. A strip of Moldovan territory on the east bank of the river Dniester has been under the de facto control of the breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990.
Due to a decrease in industrial and agricultural output following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the service sector has grown to dominate Moldova's economy and currently composes over 60% of the nation's GDP. However, Moldova remains the poorest country in Europe.
Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. It is a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) and aspires to join the European Union.

Moldova (newspaper)
Moldova was a semimonthly newspaper published in Bârlad, Romania.
History
Though presented as being independent, the paper was published under the patronage of the "Academia Bârlădeană". The first issue of the newspaper hit the stands on January 2, 1931 and it appeared regularly until December 26, 1931. The following year, No.1-2 was published on March 1, 1932, and No.3 (the newspapers' last) on June 15, 1932.
The editor in chief of the newspaper George Nedelea and its main supporter was George Tutoveanu, at that time prefect of Tutova County. The main concern of the newspaper was the literary activity in the city of Bârlad. Besides George Tutoveanu, its main contributors were G. G. Ursu, Teodor Vlad, George Damaschin, Zoe G. Frasin, Ştefan Cosma, C.V. Slobozeanu, George Pallady, Emil Tudor, Nicolae Costăchescu and Cicerone Mucenic. Political articles were signed, among others by Ion Palodă (Isac Veinfeld), Mihai Lupescu, Marieta Creangă, and Ioan Antoniu.

Western Moldavia
Moldavia (Romanian: Moldova) is a geographical region situated in north-east of Romania. Also is called Western Moldavia or Romanian Moldavia. As a historical region, and former principality until its union with Wallachia in 1859, Moldavia included at various times in its history the regions of Bessarabia (with the Budjak) and the entire Bukovina; the larger part of the former is nowadays the independent state of Moldova, while the rest of it and the larger, northern part of Bukovina form parts of Ukraine.
The Romanian region itself consists of eight (or seven, sometimes Suceava County - most of it in southern Bukovina - is not included) counties, spanning over 46,173 km2 (17,827 sq mi) (19.5% of Romania's territory). Its total population is 4,011,640 (20% of Romania's population). Most of Moldavia (6 out of 8 counties) is part of the Nord-Est development region, while the two southern counties (Galaţi and Vrancea) are in the Sud-Est development region.

Gagauzia
Gagaúzia (Gagauz: Gagaúziya or Gagaúz Yerí; Romanian: Găgăuzia; Russian: Гагаýзия, Gagaúziya), formally known as the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri) (Gagauz: Avtonom Territorial Bölümlüü Gagauz Yeri; Romanian: Unitatea Teritorială Autonomă Găgăuzia; Russian: Автономное территориальное образование Гагаузия, Avtonomnoye territorialnoye obrazovaniye Gagauziya), is an autonomous region of Moldova. Its name comes from the Gagauz people.
History
According to some theories, the Gagauz people descend from the Seljuq Turks who settled in Dobruja following the Anatolian Seljuq Sultan Izzeddin Keykavus II (1236–1276). They may be descended from Pechenegs, Uz (Oghuz) and Cuman (Kipchak) peoples.
More specifically, one clan of Oghuz Turks is known to have migrated to the Balkans during intertribal conflicts with other Turks. This Oghuz Turk clan converted from Islam to Orthodox Christianity after settling in the Eastern Balkans (in Bulgaria) and were called Gagauz Turks. A large group of the Gagauz later left Bulgaria and settled in southern Bessarabia, along with a group of ethnic Bulgarians.

Comrat
Comrat (Romanian pronunciation: [komˈrat]; Gagauz: Komrat, Romanian: Comrat, Russian: Комрат) is a city in Moldova and the capital of the autonomous region of Gagauzia. It is located at 46°19′N 28°40′E / 46.317°N 28.667°E / 46.317; 28.667, in the south of the country, on the Ialpug River. In 2004, Comrat's population was 23,429, of which the vast majority are Gagauzians.
The name is of Turkic and Nogai origin.
History
Comrat began to be settled in 1789, and received town privileges in 1957. During the time when the town was part of Moldavian SSR, Comrat's industry was geared toward the production of butter, wine, and rugs, the latter ornated with Moldavian motifs. The Comrat State University was established in 2002.

Comrat is situated in the southern wine zone of Moldova. It is known for production of red wines and muscats. In Comrat and its suburbs there are about 10 wine factories.

Ukraine accused Russia on Tuesday of trying to drag Moldova's breakaway region of Transdniestria into the war. That's after authorities in the Moscow-backed area, which borders western Ukraine, blamed Kyiv for a series of attacks. They said explosions had damaged two radio masts that broadcast in Russian, and that one of its military units had been targeted. Ukraine insists Russia is behind the attacks. The United States of America supports the sovereignty of Moldova and closely monitors the developments surrounding the so-called Transnistria, says US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Miller was asked to comment on appeal of Transnistria to Russia with a request for "protection from Moldova".
The speaker noted that the US is monitoring the actions of Russia and Transnistria, as Moscow plays an increasingly aggressive and destabilizing role in Europe.
"The United States firmly supports Moldova's sovereignty and territory within internationally recognized borders," he added.
Earlier the media reported that the deputies of Transnistria were to ask the Russian öresident Vladimir Putin to join the Russian Federation at the congress. However, this never happened. The so-called Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic simply called on Russia to "protect them from Moldova". In particular, they addressed the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States , the European Parliament, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, urging them to "influence the leadership of Moldova to return to adequate dialogue and cease violations of the rights and freedoms of the residents of Transnistria."
Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, said in a comment to RBC-Ukraine that such a result is a failure for Russia. The representative of the military intelligence notes that the active disinformation campaign regarding Transnistria's plans to ask Vladimir Putin for accession to the Russian Federation indicates that "an interested party" was involved.
"When we talk about Moldova and Ukraine, it is clear who this party is," Yusov adds.

Ukraine accused Russia on Tuesday of trying to drag Moldova's breakaway region of Transdniestria into the war.
That's after authorities in the Moscow-backed area, which borders western Ukraine, blamed Kyiv for a series of attacks.
They said explosions had damaged two radio masts that broadcast in Russian, and that one of its military units had been targeted.
Ukraine insists Russia is behind the attacks.
Moldova's President called an emergency security council meeting after the incident.
"Our analysis indicates there are tensions between different forces within the region, who are interested in destabilising the situation. This makes the region of Transdniestria vulnerable and creates risks for Moldova."
Transdniestria is an unrecognised sliver of land bordering southwestern Ukraine.
Ukraine fears the region could be used as a launch pad for new attacks.
Russia has had troops permanently based there since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Last week, a senior Russian commander said the second phase of what Russia calls its "special military operation" included a plan to take full control of southern Ukraine and improve its access to Transdniestria.

Nataliia Humeniuk, head of Ukraine’s Joint Press Center of the Operational Command South, stated that the Russian contingent in the unrecognized territory of Transnistria does not pose a threat, as Ukraine has complete information about its concentration and composition.
The statement comes after a 28 February congress, where Transnistrian “MPs” appealed to Russia’s Federation Council and State Duma for protection against “growing Moldovan pressure.” There was speculation that Putin might announce actions regarding Transnistria, potentially bolstering Russia’s military presence or even annexing the region, during his address to Russia’s parliament on 29 February. However, Putin did not mention Transnistria in his speech.
Nataliia Humeniuk stated that the situation remains under the control of the Defense Forces, emphasizing that the border with unrecognized Transnistria is securely protected and fortified.
She explained that defense measures were established at the start of the full-scale invasion and have been maintained by the State Border Guard Service and other Defense Forces units. Humeniuk highlighted the area’s danger due to the Russian contingent’s presence, leading to tightened control from the beginning.
She assured that the situation is under absolute control, dismissing current concerns as “information injections.” Humeniuk added,
“We have clearly studied the contingent in Transnistria, we know its concentration, internal and quantitative composition, and we absolutely understand how to adequately counteract it.”
The spokesperson reassured the civilian population that the contingent does not pose a critical threat, suggesting that any concerns could only be related to information injections or provocations, such as shooting near the border.

Pro-Russian separatists ask Moscow for protection in Moldova | DW News
The Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria has asked Moscow for protection. The pro-Russia separatists accuse the pro-Western Moldovan government of waging economic warfare gainst them. Tensions between the two neighbours have been rising ever since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria is a tiny sliver of land located between Ukraine and Moldova - and falls within Russia's sphere of influence. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, followed by Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Constanța, Craiova, Brașov, and Galați. It is member of the European Union (EU), NATO, European Council (EUCO), BSEC, and WTO.Europe's second-longest river, the Danube, rises in Germany's Black Forest and flows southeasterly for 2,857 km (1,775 mi), before emptying into Romania's Danube Delta. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. During World War I, after declaring its neutrality in 1914, Romania fought together with the Allied Powers from 1916. In the aftermath of the war, Bukovina, Bessarabia, Transylvania, and parts of Banat, Crișana, and Maramureș became part of the Kingdom of Romania.In June–August 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and Second Vienna Award, Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union and Northern Transylvania to Hungary. Romanian: [molˈdova]), officially the Republic of Moldova (Romanian: Republica Moldova, listen ), is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The capital city is Chișinău.
Moldova declared independence on August 27, 1991 as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The current Constitution of Moldova was adopted in 1994. A strip of Moldovan territory on the east bank of the river Dniester has been under the de facto control of the breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990.
Due to a decrease in industrial and agricultural output following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the service sector has grown to dominate Moldova's economy and currently composes over 60% of the nation's GDP. However, Moldova remains the poorest country in Europe.
Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. It is a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) and aspires to join the European Union.

The United States of America supports the sovereignty of Moldova and closely monitors the developments surrounding the so-called Transnistria, says US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Miller was asked to comment on appeal of Transnistria to Russia with a request for "protection from Moldova".
The speaker noted that the US is monitoring the actions of Russia and Transnistria, as Moscow plays an increasingly aggressive and destabilizing role in Europe.
"The United States firmly supports Moldova's sovereignty and territory within internationally recognized borders," he added.
Earlier the media reported that the deputies of Transnistria were to ask the Russian öresident Vladimir Putin to join the Russian Federation at the congress. However, this never happened. The so-called Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic simply called on Russia to "protect them from Moldova". In particular, they addressed the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States , the European Parliament, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, urging them to "influence the leadership of Moldova to return to adequate dialogue and cease violations of the rights and freedoms of the residents of Transnistria."
Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, said in a comment to RBC-Ukraine that such a result is a failure for Russia. The representative of the military intelligence notes that the active disinformation campaign regarding Transnistria's plans to ask Vladimir Putin for accession to the Russian Federation indicates that "an interested party" was involved.
"When we talk about Moldova and Ukraine, it is clear who this party is," Yusov adds.

Ukraine accused Russia on Tuesday of trying to drag Moldova's breakaway region of Transdniestria into the war.
That's after authorities in the Moscow-backed area, which borders western Ukraine, blamed Kyiv for a series of attacks.
They said explosions had damaged two radio masts that broadcast in Russian, and that one of its military units had been targeted.
Ukraine insists Russia is behind the attacks.
Moldova's President called an emergency security council meeting after the incident.
"Our analysis indicates there are tensions between different forces within the region, who are interested in destabilising the situation. This makes the region of Transdniestria vulnerable and creates risks for Moldova."
Transdniestria is an unrecognised sliver of land bordering southwestern Ukraine.
Ukraine fears the region could be used as a launch pad for new attacks.
Russia has had troops permanently based there since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Last week, a senior Russian commander said the second phase of what Russia calls its "special military operation" included a plan to take full control of southern Ukraine and improve its access to Transdniestria.

Nataliia Humeniuk, head of Ukraine’s Joint Press Center of the Operational Command South, stated that the Russian contingent in the unrecognized territory of Transnistria does not pose a threat, as Ukraine has complete information about its concentration and composition.
The statement comes after a 28 February congress, where Transnistrian “MPs” appealed to Russia’s Federation Council and State Duma for protection against “growing Moldovan pressure.” There was speculation that Putin might announce actions regarding Transnistria, potentially bolstering Russia’s military presence or even annexing the region, during his address to Russia’s parliament on 29 February. However, Putin did not mention Transnistria in his speech.
Nataliia Humeniuk stated that the situation remains under the control of the Defense Forces, emphasizing that the border with unrecognized Transnistria is securely protected and fortified.
She explained that defense measures were established at the start of the full-scale invasion and have been maintained by the State Border Guard Service and other Defense Forces units. Humeniuk highlighted the area’s danger due to the Russian contingent’s presence, leading to tightened control from the beginning.
She assured that the situation is under absolute control, dismissing current concerns as “information injections.” Humeniuk added,
“We have clearly studied the contingent in Transnistria, we know its concentration, internal and quantitative composition, and we absolutely understand how to adequately counteract it.”
The spokesperson reassured the civilian population that the contingent does not pose a critical threat, suggesting that any concerns could only be related to information injections or provocations, such as shooting near the border.

●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●Romania, is a country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. It borders Bulgaria to the south, Ukraine to the north, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Moldova to the east, and the Black Sea to the southeast. It has a predominantly temperate-continental climate, and an area of 238,397 km2 (92,046 sq mi), with a population of around 19 million.Romania is the twelfth-largest country in Europe and the sixth-most populous member state of the European Union. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, followed by Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Constanța, Craiova, Brașov, and Galați. It is member of the European Union (EU), NATO, European Council (EUCO), BSEC, and WTO.Europe's second-longest river, the Danube, rises in Germany's Black Forest and flows southeasterly for 2,857 km (1,775 mi), before emptying into Romania's Danube Delta. The Carpathian Mountains cross Romania from the north to the southwest and include Moldoveanu Peak, at an altitude of 2,544 m (8,346 ft).
Settlement in what is now Romania began in the Lower Paleolithic followed by written records attesting the kingdom of Dacia, its conquest, and subsequent Romanization by the Roman Empire during late antiquity. The modern Romanian state was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. During World War I, after declaring its neutrality in 1914, Romania fought together with the Allied Powers from 1916. In the aftermath of the war, Bukovina, Bessarabia, Transylvania, and parts of Banat, Crișana, and Maramureș became part of the Kingdom of Romania.In June–August 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and Second Vienna Award, Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union and Northern Transylvania to Hungary. In November 1940, Romania signed the Tripartite Pact and, consequently, in June 1941 entered World War II on the Axis side, fighting against the Soviet Union until August 1944, when it joined the Allies and recovered Northern Transylvania. Following the war and occupation by the Red Army, Romania became a socialist republic and a member of the Warsaw Pact. After the 1989 Revolution, Romania began a transitiontowards democracy and a market economy.

Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Romaniato the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south.The unrecognised state of Transnistria lies across the Dniester river on the country's eastern border with Ukraine. Moldova's capital and largest city is Chișinău.Most of Moldovan territory was a part of the Principality of Moldavia from the 14th century until 1812, when it was ceded to the Russian Empire by the Ottoman Empire (to which Moldavia was a vassal state) and became known as Bessarabia. In 1856, southern Bessarabia was returned to Moldavia, which three years later united with Wallachia to form Romania, but Russian rule was restored over the whole of the region in 1878. During the 1917 Russian Revolution, Bessarabia briefly became an autonomous state within the Russian Republic. In February 1918, it declared independence and then integrated into Romania later that year following a vote of its assembly. The decision was disputed by Soviet Russia, which in 1924 established, within the Ukrainian SSR, a so-called Moldavian autonomous republic on partially Moldovan-inhabited territories to the east of Bessarabia.
In 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union, leading to the creation of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic(Moldavian SSR). On 27 August 1991, as the dissolution of the Soviet Union was underway, the Moldavian SSR declared independenceand took the name Moldova.However, the strip of Moldovan territory on the east bank of the Dniester has been under the de factocontrol of the breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990.The constitution of Moldova was adopted in 1994, and the country became a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government.

Monasteries dating from the 15th and 16th cenrtury are still exceptionally well preserved in Bukovina. Beautiful frescos on their walls represent historic and biblical images. The battle against the Turkish domination is often pictured; probably because the Orthodox Church kept the spirit of the nation alive during the four centuries of Turkish domination. Sucevita, Voronet and Moldovita are three of these rare 15th century monasteries with well-preserved - outside and inside - paintings. The monasteries are inhabited by nuns.

The Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria has asked Moscow for protection. The pro-Russia separatists accuse the pro-Western Moldovan government of waging economic warfare gainst them. Tensions between the two neighbours have been rising ever since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria is a tiny sliver of land located between Ukraine and Moldova - and falls within Russia's sphere of influence. It broke away from Moldova during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, but ISN'T internationally recognized.
