Offline editing is part of the post-production process of filmmaking and television production in which raw footage is copied and edited, without affecting the camera original film stock or video tape. Once the project has been completely offline edited, the original media will be assembled in the online editing stage.
The term offline originated in the computing and telecommunications industries, meaning "not under the direct control of another device" (automation).
Modern offline video editing is conducted in a non-linear editing (NLE) suite. The digital revolution has made the offline editing workflow process immeasurably quicker, as practitioners moved from time-consuming (video tape to tape) linear video editing online editing suites, to computer hardware and video editing software such as Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Avid, Sony Vegas, Lightworks and VideoPad. Typically, all the original footage (often tens or hundreds of hours) is digitized into the suite at a low resolution. The editor and director are then free to work with all the options to create the final cut.
Adobe Premiere Pro is a timeline-based video editing software application. It is part of the Adobe Creative Cloud, which includes video editing, graphic design, and web development programs.
Premiere Pro is used by broadcasters such as the BBC and CNN. It has been used to edit feature films, such as Gone Girl,Captain Abu Raed, and Monsters, and other venues such as Madonna's Confessions Tour.
Premiere Pro is the redesigned successor to Adobe Premiere, and was launched in 2003. Premiere Pro refers to versions released in 2003 and later, whereas Premiere refers to the earlier releases. Premiere was one of the first computer-based NLEs (non-linear editing system), with its first release on Mac in 1991. Up until version Premiere Pro 2.0 (CS2), the software packaging featured a galloping horse, in a nod to Eadweard Muybridge's work, "Sallie Gardner at a Gallop".
Premiere Pro supports high resolution video editing at up to 10,240 × 8,192resolution, at up to 32-bits per channel color, in both RGB and YUV. Audio sample-level editing, VST audio plug-in support, and 5.1 surround sound mixing are available. Premiere Pro's plug-in architecture enables it to import and export formats beyond those supported by QuickTime or DirectShow, supporting a wide variety of video and audio file formats and codecs on both MacOS and Windows. When used with Cineform's Neo line of plug-ins, it supports 3D editing with the ability to view 3D material using 2D monitors, while making individual left and right eye adjustments.
The terms "online" and "offline" have specific meanings in regard to computer technology and telecommunications in which "online" indicates a state of connectivity, while "offline" indicates a disconnected state. Common vernacular extended from their computing and telecommunication meanings and refers specifically to an Internet connection. Lastly, in the area of human interaction and conversation, discussions taking place during a business meeting are "online", while issues that do not concern all participants of the meeting should be "taken offline" — continued outside of the meeting.
In computer technology and telecommunication, online and offline are defined by Federal Standard 1037C. They are states or conditions of a "device or equipment" or of a "functional unit". To be considered online, one of the following may apply to a system: it is under the direct control of another device; it is under the direct control of the system with which it is associated; or it is available for immediate use on demand by the system without human intervention.
A premiere (or première, French for "first") is the debut (first public presentation) of a play, film, dance, or musical composition.
Raymond F. Betts attributes the introduction of the film premiere to Sid Grauman.
This is a tutorial about dealing with slow and choppy playback when trying to edit in Adobe Premiere. Since I've had my GoPro Hero 3 and my go-to setting being 1080p at 60 frames per second, my computer can't really handle this quality - at least not smoothly - which makes editing really difficult and pretty frustrating. So, to prevent this issue, I use a technique called 'Offline Editing'. Basically, Offline Editing is using lower quality versions of your footage to do your editing and then replacing it with your original footage once you're done with the editing process. This lower quality footage runs perfectly on my machine, and makes scrubbing, trimming and moving footage around much more responsive and eliminates any lag. Once I'm happy with all my cuts, I simply relink the origin...

Slow computers and 4K video editing doesn't go together. But there's an option in Premiere Pro that creates low resolution proxies in a very fast workflow. If you buy a new camera these day, chances are pretty big it can shoot 4K. A wonderful and super sharp resolution that we must embrace. But the downside is in the editing. 4K video files require a lot more resources and if you have an old or slow computer, it might not edit so fluent. The solution to this problem is to work with proxies. This is nothing new, but the workflow in the latest Adobe Premiere Pro update is. Essentially you'll transcode your 4K clips into low resolution videos which you'll use in the editing. These lower resolution clips are called proxies. Once you're done editing you replace everything back with the origin...
