Hot Dogs - Despite being an incredibly heavily processed food, hot dogs didn’t earn their place on this list by being unhealthy. Sure, there’s plenty of concern that eating too many hot dogs could lead to colorectal cancer, but the real issue lies within how these child-favorite treats are easy to choke on. Nutmeg - It adds a great bit of flavor to dishes needing an element of spice, but there’s a danger to overuse of nutmeg that many may not even be aware of. Back in the 1500s, nutmeg was used to induce a miscarriage and, even more recently in the 1960s, it was used as a cheaper alternative to psychotropic drugs. Tuna - Tuna is definitely not without its healthier properties, such as high levels of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, but there’s something else in the water that, if you overindulge in canned tuna, can prove to be dangerous. Tapioca - Chances are you’ve heard of tapioca, but maybe you’ve never heard of the plant that the delicious treat is made from. Cassava, from which the tapioca root is found, creates cyanide, which is then distributed to the root itself. If not prepared properly, tapioca could prove fatal to those that ingest it. Store-bought varieties should be safe enough to eat as they’re required to meet specific standards, but those that prefer a homemade variety should take care in peeling, slicing, and cooking down the root thoroughly to avoid cyanide poisoning. Lima Beans - It’s frightening to think of the amount of natural food items we eat that contain something that could kill us. In the case of lima beans, much like tapioca, it’s a dangerous level of cyanide, found in beans that are left raw. The cyanide is believed to be a defense mechanism for the planet and, if not prepared properly, can prove to be dangerous. Lima beans that are purchased raw should be thoroughly cooked and uncovered so that the poison can release from the beans entirely. Fruit Seeds - They’re unpleasant to even try and eat, so it’s unlikely that you’re going to try and chow down on any variety of fruit seed, but if the thought ever crossed your mind, here is a great reason not to. Depending on the type of fruit you’re consuming, you could unexpectedly introduce cyanide into your system. Red Kidney Beans - In the same vein as lima beans, red kidney beans are another delicious food that you will want to avoid chowing down on as a raw product. Uncooked varieties of kidney beans contain phytohaemagglutin, a toxin that can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Bitter Almonds - Before you rush off and start throwing out your supply of raw almonds, there are different kinds of almonds out there and both have different properties. One of them, the bitter almond, just so happens to be highly poisonous with dangerous levels of glycoside amygdalin. Rhubarb Leaves - Rhubarb stalks are a common ingredient in desserts, jellies, and sauces, but this colorful ingredient comes with the risk of a rhubarb leave making its way into the blender. While the stalk is perfectly safe to eat, even being used to aid with gastrointestinal disorders, the leaf is an entirely different story. The compound oxalic acid along with antrhaquinone glycosides are present in rhubarb leaves. Potatoes - Probably the most innocent sounding food present on this list also happens to be deceptively poisonous. While you’re likely to throw away anything that looks unnaturally green, sometimes you just need those last few potatoes. What you may not realize is that if you ever eat a particularly green potato you’re ingesting solanine, a toxin that can lead to a variety of unpleasant symptoms even with just a small dose.
