Hello, my name is Rod Martin, and this is Cebu Island. I'm standing in the center of the Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands. Humans have lived in these islands for at least 24,000 years.
Each of these islands is the result of millions of years of movement of tectonic plates, one against another — the Philippine Sea plate sliding underneath the Sunda plate.
There is a great deal about the Philippines which is similar to the mythical Atlantis. According to the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, Atlantis sank in a day and a night nearly 12,000 years ago.
Was Atlantis a real place? We don't know, yet, but there is mounting evidence in support of that possibility.
Thankfully, there are some critical differences between Atlantis and the Philippines. And that's what this film is about.
The ancient Greek philosopher, Plato was one of the founders of western philosophy.
He is our source for the Atlantis story.
Half a world away, the Philippines are a group of islands created by the movement of the Philippine Sea plate underneath the Sunda plate, forming islands in what would otherwise be empty ocean.
Part of mountain building comes from the friction between two plates — each made of millions of tons of rock — when the two plates rub against one another. Also, the descending plate heats up as it moves downward into the Earth's mantle. This melts the old crust and gives rise to volcanoes.
Today, the Philippines are largely volcanic in origin.
Atlantis was created much the same way. Over millions of years, as the Africa plate moved northward to meet the Eurasia, the Africa plate slid underneath the Eurasia, creating mountains and volcanoes.
But first, where was Atlantis? Plato was quite specific.
The fabled island, if it existed at all, stood outside the Strait of Gibraltar and faced the territory known in Plato's time as the Phoenician Gadira, modern Cádiz, Spain (the oldest European city on the Atlantic coast).
The island was the size of ancient Libya and Asia Minor combined.
Because of this size, it likely stretched to the Azores volcanic archipelago.
Nearly 200 million years ago, as the ancient super-continent Pangaea broke up, Africa moved northward to meet Eurasia.
As the Africa continent moved, the periphery of the Africa plate slid underneath the Eurasia, creating mountains in the process.
Perhaps 50-60 million years ago, mountain building got a boost. Something happened along the Africa-Eurasia plate boundary in the Atlantic causing the Eurasia to choke on the Africa plate.
Perhaps as much as 100% of Africa's northward movement locally was converted into mountain building.
Then, when the region of mountainous terrain (a new island) reached its maximum height, Africa was no longer able to move northward at this new island. The result of this impasse set in motion the future demise of Atlantis.
But now, what happens when one object collides with another, but the collision is not head-on?...

Killer Earthquake - Japan Megaquake - Documentary
Japan has had a long history of earthquakes and seismic activity. It is an area of high seismicity because it is located near major tectonic plate boundaries and is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The islands of Japan are primarily the result of several large oceanic movements occurring over hundreds of millions of years from the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene as a result of the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the continental Amurian Plate and Okinawa Plate to the south, and subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate to the north.
Japan was originally attached to the eastern coast of the Eurasian continent. The subducting plates, being deeper than the Eurasian plate, pulled Japan eastward, opening the Sea of Japan around 15 million years ago. The Strait of Tartary and the Korea Strait opened much later. Today the Japanese archipelago is considered a mature island arc and is the result of several generations of subducting plates. Approximately 15,000 km of oceanic floor has passed under the Japanese area in the last 450 million years, with most being fully subducted.
Japan is situated in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Frequent low intensity earth tremors and occasional volcanic activity are felt throughout the islands. Destructive earthquakes, often resulting in tsunamis, occur several times a century.

On January 17th 1995 Kobe was hit by a 7.2 earthquake. Although the city had been build to withstand a much stronger earthquake over 6000 people lost their lives, mainly due to the Japanese wooden frame houses.
The Great Hanshin earthquake (阪神・淡路大震災 Hanshin Awaji daishinsai?), or Kobe earthquake, occurred on Tuesday, January 17, 1995, at 05:46 JST (January 16 at 20:46 UTC) in the southern part of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale (USGS), and 7 on the JMA Shindo intensity scale. The tremors lasted for approximately 20 seconds. The focus of the earthquake was located 16 km beneath its epicenter, on the northern end of Awaji Island, 20 km away from the city of Kobe.
Approximately 6,434 people lost their lives (final estimate as of December 22, 2005); about 4,600 of them were from Kobe. Among major cities, Kobe, with its population of 1.5 million, was the closest to the epicenter and hit by the strongest tremors. This was Japan's worst earthquake in the 20th century after the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923, which claimed more than 105,000 lives. The 1995 earthquake caused approximately ten trillion yen ($100 billion) in damage, 2.5% of Japan's GDP at the time
Most of the largest earthquakes in Japan are caused by subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate or Pacific Plate, with mechanisms that involve either energy released within the subducting plate or the accumulation and sudden release of stress in the overlying plate. Earthquakes of these types are especially frequent in the coastal regions of northeastern Japan.
The Great Hanshin earthquake belonged to a third type, called an "inland shallow earthquake". Earthquakes of this type occur along active faults. Even at lower magnitudes, they can be very destructive because they often occur near populated areas and because their hypocenters are located less than 20 km below the surface. The Great Hanshin earthquake began north of the island of Awaji, which lies just south of Kobe. It spread toward the southwest along the Nojima Fault on Awaji and toward the northeast along the Suma and Suwayama faults, which run through the center of Kobe. Observations of deformations in these faults suggest that the area was subjected to east-west compression, which is consistent with previously known crustal movements. Like other earthquakes recorded in western Japan between 1891 and 1948, the 1995 earthquake had a strike-slip mechanism that accommodated east-west shortening of the Eurasian Plate due to its collision with the Philippine Sea Plate in central Honshu.
The effects can be divided into primary and secondary effects. Primary effects included the ruin of 150,000 buildings, the collapse of 1 km of the Hanshin Expressway, the destruction of 120 of the 150 quays in the port of Kobe, and fires which raged over large portions of the city. Secondary effects included disruption of the electricity supply. Residents were afraid to return home because of aftershocks that lasted several days (74 of which were strong enough to be felt).
The majority of deaths, over 4,000, occurred in cities and the suburbs in Hyōgo Prefecture. A total of 68 children under the age of 18 were orphaned, while 332 additional children lost one parent.
One in five of the buildings in the worst-hit area were completely destroyed (or rendered uninhabitable). About 22% of the offices in the central business district were rendered unusable, and over half of the houses in that area were deemed unfit to live in. High rise buildings that were built after the modern 1981 building code suffered little; however, those that were not constructed to these standards suffered serious structural damage. Most of the older traditional houses had heavy tiled roofs which weighed around 2 tons, intended to resist the frequent typhoons that plagued Kobe, but they were only held up by a light wood support frame. When the wood supports gave way, the roof crushed the unreinforced walls and floors in a "pancake" collapse. Newer homes have reinforced walls and lighter roofs to avoid this, but are more susceptible to typhoons.
The damage to highways and subways was the most graphic image of the earthquake, and images of the collapsed elevated Hanshin Expressway made front pages of newspapers worldwide. Most people in Japan believed those structures to be relatively safe from earthquake damage because of the steel-reinforced concrete design. Though the initial belief was construction had been negligent, it was later shown that most of the collapsed structures were constructed properly according to the building codes in force in the 1960s.

Though the initial belief was construction had been negligent, it was later shown that most of the collapsed structures were constructed properly according to the building codes in force in the 1960s.

In our top story, strong aftershocks continue to rattle Taiwan, following a powerful magnitude 6.3 earthquake this morning that shook buildings across the nation and sent people scurrying for cover. Earlier this evening, three powerful aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.5, 5.8 and 5.7 were recorded in almost the exact same location in the seas east of Taiwan. CWB experts say more aftershocks are likely. This eighth floor conference room in the Legislature shows the effects of this morning’s earthquake off Taiwan’s eastern coast. The quake occurred at a depth of 17.5 kilometers.Kuo Kai-wenSeismology Center Director The epicenter of the earthquake was located at sea, about 76.2 kilometers east of Hualien City Hall. We measured it as a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. Because of its location, we suspect it was due to subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate under the Eurasian Plate. It was a relatively shallow quake. The earthquake was felt across Taiwan, with the biggest impact in northern Taiwan. In Yilan and New Taipei’s Banqiao it was measured as a magnitude 4 earthquake while in Taipei it was measured as magnitude 3. The earthquake was more pronounced in Banqiao because of the area’s unique geography. Kuo Kai-wen Seismology Center Director In the Banqiao-Toucheng area, the layer of sediment is relatively thick, so the soil is (loose). In New Taipei, the earthquake measured magnitude 4 for just 0.12 seconds, which is just an instant.Taiwan has already encountered three earthquakes greater than 6 on the Richter scale this year. Looking back at historic data, the CWB believes there’s a good chance yet another magnitude 6 or above earthquake could strike Taiwan this year.

Taiwan Time Lapse Video in 2 Minutes HD | Kaohsiung & Chiang Kai Shek Taipei ATL5
[...]The island of Taiwan lies in a complex tectonic area between the Yangtze Plate to the west and north, the Okinawa Plate on the north-east, and the Philippine Mobile Belt on the east and south. The upper part of the crust on the island is primarily made up of a series of terranes, mostly old island arcs which have been forced together by the collision of the forerunners of the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. These have been further uplifted as a result of the detachment of a portion of the Eurasian Plate as it was subducted beneath remnants of the Philippine Sea Plate, a process which left the crust under Taiwan more buoyant.[86]
The east and south of Taiwan are a complex system of belts formed by, and part of the zone of, active collision between the North Luzon Trough portion of the Luzon Volcanic Arc and South China, where accreted portions of the Luzon Arc and Luzon forearc form the eastern Coastal Range and parallel inland Longitudinal Valley of Taiwan respectively.[87]
The major seismic faults in Taiwan correspond to the various suture zones between the various terranes. These have produced major quakes throughout the history of the island. On 21 September 1999, a 7.3 quake known as the "921 earthquake" killed more than 2,400 people. The seismic hazard map for Taiwan by the USGS shows 9/10 of the island as the highest rating (most hazardous).

A preliminary Great 8.5 Superdeep Earthquake strikes South of Japan and is quickly downgraded by 7 points my guess is only because it happened so deep that not much of the energy made it to the surface! From the 26th to the 28th we were in a major calm with only a couple 5th magnitudes and a 36hr period with 4th magnitudes being the Largest. When you see this happen it is a good bet that a storm is coming! It was the largest quake to occur at that depth in over 100 years if not more; thanks to Stephan P. Shaw for doing the research on that fact! Thanks for viewing, leave your thoughts below.

The Philippine Sea is a marginal sea east and north of the Philippines occupying an estimated surface area of 2 million mi² (5 million km²) on the western part of the North Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by the Philippine archipelago (Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao) on the southwest; Palau, Yap, and Ulithi (of the Carolines) on the southeast; the Marianas, including Guam, Saipan, and Tinian, on the east; the Bonin and Iwo Jima on the northeast; the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyūshū on the north; the Ryukyu Islands on the northwest; and Taiwan in the west.
The sea has a complex and diverse undersea relief. The floor is formed into a structural basin by a series of geologic faults and fracture zones. Island arcs, which are actually extended ridges protruding above the ocean surface due to plate tectonic activity in the area, enclose the Philippine Sea to the north, east and south. The Philippine archipelago, Ryukyu Islands, and the Marianas are examples. Another prominent feature of the Philippine Sea is the presence of deep sea trenches, among them the Philippine Trench and the Mariana Trench, containing the deepest point on the planet.

he Ultimate Exclusive Beach Getaway
Like a precious pearl nestled in a clam, a quiet cove in Davao, Philippines cradles the Pearl Farm Beach Resort, where you can have the ultimate beach getaway without the cacophony of beachgoers.
Surrounded by an abundance of pristine beaches, against a backdrop of natural grandeur, our resort provides the perfect tropical holiday. Adding to the luster that makes it radiate are the well-appointed suites and villas with balconies that lend a breathtaking view of the horizon. Guests will also delight in the mouth-watering cuisines of the Maranao Restaurant and the cocktails at Parola Bar — the ambience of both is made more spellbinding by the ocean.
Formerly a pearl farm where thousands of pink, white, and gold pearls were cultivated, Pearl Farm flourished into an island hideaway now known as the Jewel of the South. What better way to escape from the banal everyday routine than to bask in the beauty of mesmerizing horizons, luxurious lodgings, and enchanting beaches? Pearl Farm Beach Resort will undoubtedly leave a happy imprint in the memory.

East Asian Adventures: Follow me on our trip to the Philippines. Manila is a city of extreme contrasts. You have the poor and dodgy Manila City with it's colonial heritage buildings, kids begging for money on the street and the oldest Chinatown in the world and then you have Makati City which is this shiny, green and clean looking ocean of skyscrapers and shopping malls. One thing in Makati was for sure: A visit at the Hard Rock Cafe to get me some new guitar pins for my collection and a plate of buffalo wings with blue cheese sauce.
Our flight departure from Hong Kong to Clark (Manila), with an 8 hour layover in Clark (we survived thanks to Red Horse), and another flight to Kalibo before we finally arrived Boracay. We stayed on Boracay for four nights before we flew to Manila.

Thansing is a meadow at the same altitude as Dzongri. The trail from Dzongri to Thansing descends a 1000ft to Kockchurang and then climbs a 1000ft to Thansing. At the end of the climb is Thansing a big meadow. There is a dilapidated trekker hut at the entrance of the flat meadow. The hut can be used as a kitchen but tents would be needed to stay. The open meadow can host any number of tents. You are right in front of Pandim and the left wall of Kanchanjunga here.
