Shoreham air crash: Man films Hunter hitting A27 road

Video footage of the Shoreham air crash has emerged, which shows the vintage Hawker Hunter jet coming down on the A27 road, it is thought killing 11 people.
Specialist recovery teams have begun recovering bodies from the site after the crash on Saturday, when the number of deaths was initially given as seven.
Investigators are still combing the crash site in West Sussex.

The BBC has obtained exclusive video footage of the Shoreham air crash, where a vintage jet came down on the A27 road, it is thought killing 11 people.
Specialist recovery teams have begun recovering bodies from the site after the crash on Saturday, when the number of deaths was initially given as seven.

Seven people died when an historic Hawker Hunter fighter jet plummeted on to the A27 at Shoreham in West Sussex yesterday after failing to pull out of a loop manoeuvre.The pilot was flown to the Royal Sussex Hospital, where he is in a critical condition and fighting for his life, Superintendent Jane Derrick, from Sussex Police, said.He was named in reports as Andy Hill, a former RAF pilot.A further 14 people were injured, four of whom were taken to hospital, after the jet crashed at around 1.20pm on Saturday, shortly after beginning its display in front of thousands of spectators.Horrified onlookers described seeing the plane flying low to the ground followed by a "huge ball of fire and black smoke".Footage posted online showed the jet carrying out a loop manoeuvre high in the air before smashing into the road in a huge fireball after failing to pull up in time.Supt Derrick said: "Sadly we believe that seven people have lost their lives today when the jet crashed.
"As far as we are aware all those who sadly lost their lives were on the road, and it was nobody within the air show perimeter on the actual airport.

The Shoreham Airshow has been cancelled today after the horrific crash yesterday that claimed the lives of at least seven people.
Police are warning that there may be more bodies found today as the investigation continues.

A fighter jet has crashed on to a busy road and hit at least four cars after a loop-the-loop stunt went disastrously wrong during an airshow display - leaving several 'casualties'.
Thousands of spectators watched in horror as the 1950s Hawker Hunter burst into flames after smashing into vehicles waiting at a traffic light on the A27 next to Shoreham Airshow in West Sussex this afternoon.
It has been reported that the pilot, who has not yet been identified, was pulled from the burning wreckage of the 1950s plane and is now recovering in hospital.
Sussex Police said there were several casualties after the jet came down but it was not known how many people were injured or how seriously they were hurt.

The A27 is a major road in England. It runs from its junction with the A36 at Whiteparish (near Salisbury) in the county of Wiltshire. It closely parallels the south coast, where it passes through West Sussex and terminates at Pevensey (near Eastbourne and Bexhill) in East Sussex.
Between Portsmouth and Lewes, it is one of the busiest trunk roads in the UK.
Historically, for longer distance movement along the south coast, the M25 in combination with the M2, M20, M23 / A23, A3 / A3(M) and M3 has provided an attractive alternative to the actual south coast route of A259, A27 and M27. In 2002 an offpeak journey between Margate and Southampton via the M25 was 2 hours 30 minutes, and via the coastal route using the A259, A27 and M27 was 3 hours 50 minutes. The reason why the coastal route is so much slower than the M25 alternative, is largley due to a series of bottlenecks on the A27. These include Chichester, Arundel, Worthing and East of Lewes.
Proposals to improve the Chichester by-pass are on hold.

Seven people died when an historic Hawker Hunter fighter jet plummeted on to the A27 at Shoreham in West Sussex yesterday after failing to pull out of a loop manoeuvre.The pilot was flown to the Royal Sussex Hospital, where he is in a critical condition and fighting for his life, Superintendent Jane Derrick, from Sussex Police, said.He was named in reports as Andy Hill, a former RAF pilot.A further 14 people were injured, four of whom were taken to hospital, after the jet crashed at around 1.20pm on Saturday, shortly after beginning its display in front of thousands of spectators.Horrified onlookers described seeing the plane flying low to the ground followed by a "huge ball of fire and black smoke".Footage posted online showed the jet carrying out a loop manoeuvre high in the air before smashing into the road in a huge fireball after failing to pull up in time.Supt Derrick said: "Sadly we believe that seven people have lost their lives today when the jet crashed.
"As far as we are aware all those who sadly lost their lives were on the road, and it was nobody within the air show perimeter on the actual airport.

Thousands of spectators watched in horror as the 1950s Hawker Hunter burst into flames after smashing into vehicles waiting at a traffic light on the A27 next to Shoreham Airshow in West Sussex this afternoon.
It has been reported that the pilot, who has not yet been identified, was pulled from the burning wreckage of the 1950s plane and is now recovering in hospital.

A fighter jet has crashed on to a busy road and hit at least four cars after a loop-the-loop stunt went disastrously wrong during an airshow display - leaving several 'casualties'.
Thousands of spectators watched in horror as the 1950s Hawker Hunter burst into flames after smashing into vehicles waiting at a traffic light on the A27 next to Shoreham Airshow in West Sussex this afternoon.
It has been reported that the pilot, who has not yet been identified, was pulled from the burning wreckage of the 1950s plane and is now recovering in hospital.
Sussex Police said there were several casualties after the jet came down but it was not known how many people were injured or how seriously they were hurt.

Seven people were killed multiple deaths and more than a dozen were injured Saturday August 22 /08/2015 when a British airshow went awry, sending a military jet crashing into several vehicles on a busy main road, police said.
The Hawker Hunter jet erupted into a massive fireball and sent billows of thick black smoke into the air after it plunged while performing in the Shoreham Airshow near Brighton in southern England.
Fourteen other people suffered minor wounds. A patient with life-threatening injuries was taken to the hospital.
The seven victims all died on the scene, officials said.
The pilot of the single-seat fighter jet was attempting to loop in the air at the start of his show but did not complete the trick and plummeted to the ground, eyewitnesses told BBC.

7 dead after military Hawker Hunter jet plane in UK airshow crashes into vehicles on road.
Seven people were killed multiple deaths and more than a dozen were injured Saturday August 22 /08/2015 when a British airshow went awry, sending a military jet crashing into several vehicles on a busy main road, police said.
The Hawker Hunter jet erupted into a massive fireball and sent billows of thick black smoke into the air after it plunged while performing in the Shoreham Airshow near Brighton in southern England.
Fourteen other people suffered minor wounds. A patient with life-threatening injuries was taken to the hospital.
The seven victims all died on the scene, officials said.
The pilot of the single-seat fighter jet was attempting to loop in the air at the start of his show but did not complete the trick and plummeted to the ground, eyewitnesses told BBC.

It has been reported that the pilot, who has not yet been identified, was pulled from the burning wreckage of the 1950s plane and is now recovering in hospital.

Further footage added to the earlier original of this terrible and tragic event was taken by a friend who was with me and was obviously filmed on a different camera. This is marked as Cam 1 and the original footage I have already uploaded is Cam 2. Cam 1 also includes a still photograph which my friend took as the aircraft came out of the bottom of the loop and is included as I believe it shows a previously unseen detailed aspect of the aircrafts right wing tank and flap position etc whilst immediately approaching or over the A27.
Tragically, Canfield Aviation's Hawker Hunter T7 WV372 crashed on the A27 at Shoreham Airport whilst pulling out of a loop during its display at Shoreham Airshow this afternoon at 1.25pm. This film shows the aircraft doing the loop manoeuvre immediately before the crash and the impact fireball, following a high speed run in along the crowd line from the south west. My deep sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the 11 people killed in this tragic event, their families and friends, and also for the pilot, who has life threatening injuries, and for the 14 other people injured; may they all fully recover. Thank you to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, South East Coast Ambulance Service, Sussex Police, HM Coastguard, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance , other services, organisations and bystanders who responded professionally to this disastrous event. The saddest of days.

For starters, always try to pull up to the camper's final destination on the driver's side. This allows you to get a better direct and mirror view as you back into a site or driveway. Before proceeding, park and get out of the vehicle to inspect your surroundings. Look for low lying obstacles such as stumps, branches, sink holes and drainage pipes. Inspecting your surroundings also ensures the camper is going to be set up in proper proximity to electrical, water and sewage hookups, and plenty of room to open slideouts.
Randy proceeds to demonstrate a backing up technique (with an Outback Terrain 299TBH) focusing on making the camper's wheels the pivot point while steering, and then counter-steering as the camper begins to straighten. One of the best takeaways is to unhitch the camper and reposition the towing vehicle if your facing jack-knifing due to limited space for turning. It will save you the grief of pulling forward and back multiple times for minimal results (i.e. the scene from Austin Powers when he is trying to turn the golf cart around in the corridor of Dr. Evil's lair!).

The controller then provided information about a runway at the closed Grumman-Bethpage Airport, which is in fact occupied by industrial buildings, according to NBC New York.
The plane crashed at a railway crossing between the Hicksville and Bethpage stations, killing the pilot and injuring a passenger. The Federal Aviation Administration declined to comment on the report, NBC New York reported.

Driver accelerated hard (first over the verge). When he passed 44mph (in a residential 30) I stopped. I appreciate I should not have sped and it was wrong but I had a camera running and idiots like this need to be taught a lesson.
How is a large truck travelling over 50% above the speed limit going to stop?

Searches at the Shoreham air crash site have been slowed down by heavy rain and floods, investigators have said.
The wreckage of the jet has been removed and the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) is carrying out a final sweep for plane parts.
The police operation continues as officers remove vehicles and debris and forensically examine the scene.
The death toll is "increasingly likely" to remain at 11, Sussex Police has said.
An AAIB spokesman said investigators were scouring all the road and woods one last time to make sure all plane parts had been located.
He said the weather had slowed things down because rain had filled gullies and much of the area was flooded.
'No black box'
When the jet is examined at Farnborough, the investigation team will look for obvious signs of pre-impact failures, and check whether the plane controls are still wired up.
The AAIB has told the BBC there was no black box in this plane but other data might have been recorded.
Four victims of the crash have been named by their families or those associated with them.
The pilot of the vintage Hawker Hunter jet that crashed, Andy Hill, remains in a "critical but stable" condition in the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton.
More than 200 people had reported concerns for missing relatives or friends, Sussex Police revealed.
West Sussex coroner Penny Schofield warned that identifying those who died would be a "slow and painstaking operation", saying it may take several weeks before investigations were complete.
Hundreds of officers have been working on the operation since the Hawker Hunter crashed into the busy dual carriageway alongside Shoreham Airport on Saturday.
After the jet was lifted from the scene by crane on Monday, Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry said police still had to remove vehicles and other debris from the scene.
After this, a "second phase of checking" would ensure all the victims were accounted for, followed by a "fingertip search of the area" for forensic evidence
The four named victims include Matt Jones, 24, a personal trainer, was named by his sister Becky Jones on Facebook as one of the dead.
Jacob Schilt, 23, was part of Worthing United's Sussex County League Division Two championship-winning side last season.
And Matthew Grimstone, 23, played for Worthing United and was thought to have been travelling with Mr Schilt.
The fourth victim was former Hampshire police officer Maurice Abrahams, 76, who was driving a Daimler limousine to a wedding at the time of the crash.
Paul Sheen, father of the bride, Rebecca Sheen, said he and his daughter had expected Mr Abrahams at their Worthing home but he did not arrive.
They made their way to the wedding believing he had been caught up in traffic, but during the reception someone saw an image of the wreckage of a Daimler limousine and the room fell quiet.
He said the family's concerns were now with the family of Mr Abrahams and all the victims of the air crash.
And he said: "Rebecca says this isn't about her. It's about the man who lost his life."
Simon Stone and his family were 50 metres away, about to cross a junction, when the plane crashed.
"My girls are five and two and they are trying to come to terms with what they have seen," he told the BBC.
"It was the worst thing we have ever witnessed."
Tony Kemp, a nurse from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who helped treat victims near the A27, said his medical colleagues were impressed with the "resilience and professionalism of the Red Cross volunteers" and others who had offered assistance.
'Disturbing sight'

Searches at the Shoreham air crash site have been slowed down by heavy rain and floods, investigators have said.
The wreckage of the jet has been removed and the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) is carrying out a final sweep for plane parts.
The police operation continues as officers remove vehicles and debris and forensically examine the scene.
The death toll is "increasingly likely" to remain at 11, Sussex Police has said.
An AAIB spokesman said investigators were scouring all the road and woods one last time to make sure all plane parts had been located.
He said the weather had slowed things down because rain had filled gullies and much of the area was flooded.
'No black box'
When the jet is examined at Farnborough, the investigation team will look for obvious signs of pre-impact failures, and check whether the plane controls are still wired up.
The AAIB has told the BBC there was no black box in this plane but other data might have been recorded.
Four victims of the crash have been named by their families or those associated with them.
The pilot of the vintage Hawker Hunter jet that crashed, Andy Hill, remains in a "critical but stable" condition in the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton.
More than 200 people had reported concerns for missing relatives or friends, Sussex Police revealed.
West Sussex coroner Penny Schofield warned that identifying those who died would be a "slow and painstaking operation", saying it may take several weeks before investigations were complete.
Hundreds of officers have been working on the operation since the Hawker Hunter crashed into the busy dual carriageway alongside Shoreham Airport on Saturday.
After the jet was lifted from the scene by crane on Monday, Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry said police still had to remove vehicles and other debris from the scene.
After this, a "second phase of checking" would ensure all the victims were accounted for, followed by a "fingertip search of the area" for forensic evidence
The four named victims include Matt Jones, 24, a personal trainer, was named by his sister Becky Jones on Facebook as one of the dead.
Jacob Schilt, 23, was part of Worthing United's Sussex County League Division Two championship-winning side last season.
And Matthew Grimstone, 23, played for Worthing United and was thought to have been travelling with Mr Schilt.
The fourth victim was former Hampshire police officer Maurice Abrahams, 76, who was driving a Daimler limousine to a wedding at the time of the crash.
Paul Sheen, father of the bride, Rebecca Sheen, said he and his daughter had expected Mr Abrahams at their Worthing home but he did not arrive.
They made their way to the wedding believing he had been caught up in traffic, but during the reception someone saw an image of the wreckage of a Daimler limousine and the room fell quiet.
He said the family's concerns were now with the family of Mr Abrahams and all the victims of the air crash.
And he said: "Rebecca says this isn't about her. It's about the man who lost his life."
Simon Stone and his family were 50 metres away, about to cross a junction, when the plane crashed.
"My girls are five and two and they are trying to come to terms with what they have seen," he told the BBC.
"It was the worst thing we have ever witnessed."
Tony Kemp, a nurse from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who helped treat victims near the A27, said his medical colleagues were impressed with the "resilience and professionalism of the Red Cross volunteers" and others who had offered assistance.

Well, there's a lot of choice these days when you want to look at what mountain bike to buy. Full suspension, hardtail. Aluminium, Carbon. How much travel? And of course wheel size.
Today we've come to the woods on a 29" wheeled carbon bike and 27.5" alloy bike and we're going to see what is the most fun to ride.
So we're on the mid sized wheel orange five now, the first thing we notice is how easy and quick it accelerates. Back on a Specialized Enduro 2 9 now. It's immediately obvious that I've got a lot more bike underneath me, both in wheel size and wheelbase. That added length in that wheelbase really helps when you're cornering.
So, I'm back on the 27 and a half, those people used to riding a 26" wheeled bike, jump on a 27, it doesn't feel a million miles away. Feels quite a familiar riding experience, so you get that same spritely nature from the 27 as you do with a 26, so yea it's a good thing.
Well, been out for a good chuck of the day today on two very different bikes. Two bikes that are aimed to do pretty much the same sort of thing, which is go outside, ride fast, have fun in the woods, at the hills.
The Enduro, the thing that you notice about this is that its a lot of bike, its a 160mm 29er. This bike here 27 and a half pounds it can do pretty much everything you want it to do. It's not maybe as nimble as the orange was, so when it gets really tight, yea it's probably a little bit slower but it certainly makes up for it, in just its sheer speed it can carry through into sections.
Where as the 29er, really flat as you when things get fast and rough, the orange and its twenty seven and a half guise makes you work a little bit more to get the most out of it. Is it fun? yea definitely. Is it more fun than the 29er? I'm not so sure, I think both bikes do the same job just a little bit differently but they're both a lot of fun.

The Telíca Volcano is an active volcano about 30 kilometers from León. The latest violent eruption was in 1948, but the volcano has ever since been smoking and grumbling. The volcano is just over a kilometer high (1,061 meters) and has a huge crater: 120 meters deep and 700 meters in diameter.
The hot springs of San Jacinto are connected to the Telíca volcano, even though they are not at the foot of the volcano. San Jacinto is actually one of the places you can start your hike from. It is a long way to the volcano, but because there are no roads that pass by (let alone go up) you have no other choice than to spend most of your time hiking TO instead of ON the volcano.
From San Jacinto you basically walk away from the road and the village, in the direction of the mountain right behind the hot springs. This mountain is not the volcano though. You will walk on a sandy (volcanic sand, actually), little road, filled with rocks and only accessible by foot or horse. This hike will be tough and quite tiring. Besides some corn fields there is only nature around, and you’ll really get an off-road feeling from this hike.
Then, after about three-four hours of walking you will be at the foot of the volcano. Sometimes you can see smoke come out of the volcano, even though the crater is on the other side. The actual climb is not that hard. In one-two hours you can be at the crater. It is never really steep, and there grow lots of trees and plants on the volcano. There are several spots from where you have a great view. Before you reach the crater, you will have to cross a beautiful valley with grassland, trees, and rocks. Just seeing the crater’s walls rising from the valley is impressing.
You can then walk up to the crater’s rim and take a peek if there is no smoke blowing in your direction. If you’re lucky – or if you happen to be there when it’s dark – you will see the lava boiling and glowing in the depth, 120 meters below. This spectacular feeling will even be improved when you look around. The Telíca volcano forms part of the volcanic chain that runs all the way down and includes the volcanoes in Lake Nicaragua. You will see several volcanoes in line, some smoking and others dormant.
Because of the length of the trip, it’s most comfortable to spend the night at the foot of the crater. Several tour-operators organize such trips, and it allows you to rest and also to see a magnificent sunrise from the crater rim. The valley provides a good spot to sleep. Besides the obvious equipment and food you should also bring an extra sweater, especially when you arrive at dusk. There is a strong wind close to the crater, and when you are all sweating this makes it actually very cold without dry clothes. Some tour-operators also offer night hikes: you hike at night, without sleeping, and arrive at the volcano just in time to watch the sunrise. This has the advantage of at least half of the hike not walking in the sun.
Hiking all the way back will take about three-five hours, depending on the group. Because it’s best to spend the night at the volcano – and also because it is hard to find and ascent the volcano without knowing the area –it’s best to hire a guide or go with a tour-operator. It’s also good to bring sun lotion and prepare for some dust-eating, especially in the dry season.
