A national park is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently (for example, see Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in the United States), an international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined National Parks as its category II type of protected areas. While ideas for this type of national park had been suggested previously, the United States established the first such one, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, there were 6,555 national parks worldwide in 2006 that meet its criteria.
In 1969 the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) declared a national park to be a relatively large area with particular defining characteristics. A national park was deemed to be a place

Unexplained disappearance is the physical disappearance of people or other objects without apparent cause or reason.
Reports of missing persons have increased sixfold in the past 25 years, from roughly 150,000 in 1980 to about 900,000 this year. The increase was driven in part by the country's growing population. But the numbers also indicate that law enforcement treats the cases more seriously now, including those of marginalized citizens.
An astounding 2,300 Americans are reported missing every day, including both adults and children.
But only a tiny fraction of those are stereotypical abductions or kidnappings by a stranger.

Missing-411 was the first comprehensive book about people who have disappeared in the wilds of North America. It's understood that people routinely get lost, some want to disappear but this story is about the unusual. Nobody has ever studied the archives for similarities, traits and geographical clusters of missing people, until now. A tip from a national park ranger led to this three year, 7000+ hour investigative effort into understanding the stories behind people who have vanished. The book chronicles children, adults and the elderly who disappeared, sometimes in the presence of friends and relatives. As Search and Rescue personnel exhaust leads and places to search, relatives start to believe kidnappings and abductions have occurred. The belief by the relatives is not an isolated occurrence; it replicates itself time after time, case after case across North America. The research depicts 28 clusters of missing people across the continent, something that has never been exposed and was a shocking find to researchers. Topography does play a part into the age of the victims and certain clusters have specific age and sex consistency that is baffling. This is not a phenomenon that has been occurring in just the last few decades, clusters of missing people have been identified as far back as the 1800's. The manuscript for the research was extremely large so the story was split between two books, Missing 411 Western United States and Canada and Missing 411 Eastern United States. The Eastern version will be released in late March and will include a list of all missing people in each edition and a concluding chapter that draws both books together for conclusions. Some of the issues that are discussed in each edition: • The National Park Service attitude toward missing people • How specific factors in certain cases replicate themselves in different clusters • Exposing cases involving missing children that aren't on any national database • Unusual behavior by bloodhounds/canines involved in the search process • How storms, berries, swamps, briar patches, boulder fields and victim disabilities play a role in the disappearance • The strategies of Search and Rescue personnel need to change under specific circumstances Major news organizations do a deplorable job of covering stories and issues which are deemed too unusual or too far outside the box. Chances are, they will find a way to trivialize or ignore the disturbing evidence accumulated by David Paulides, a former lawman turned investigative journalist. The paper trail uncovered by Paulides through sheer doggedness is impressive, the evidence indisputable. People are vanishing without a trace from our national parks and forests, yet government agencies are saying nothing. At a minimum, this story deserves space on the front page of every newspaper in the country, and it warrants a formal high level inquiry by the federal agencies whose files leave little doubt that something very strange is unfolding in our wilderness. You will forever walk in the woods with a different awareness.

Four years ago I was in a national park conducting other research and was staying at a room off the park. On one of those nights I had a knock at the door and two off duty national park rangers stated they had information that they wanted me to hear. They explained that they had worked at several parks during their career and had participated in many search and rescues of lost visitors. They explained that they believed there was an inordinate amount of missing people and the park service was not conducting follow-up investigations, wasn't tracking missing people and didn't appear to understand the issues behind the disappearances. This event started the project I am working on today, www.canammissing.com. I have written three books (Missing 411) about the research our group has conducted and have filed dozens of freedom of information act (FOIA) requests against the National park Service and other institutions. The most famous FOIA we filed, asking the NPS for statistics and documentation of missing people inside their system. We first asked for data on Yosemite National Park. We were told that they didn't keep track of missing people, didn't have a list of names, dates or any numbers regarding how many are still missing. We read this statement in stunned silence. The NPS followed that with essentially the same statement about their entire system, 183 locations. I wrote back to NPS explaining who my publisher was, the books I authored and claimed an authors exemption to fees, asking them to collect the data and forward to us. The response, my books were not in enough libraries to qualify for the exemption, something nobody can find as a requirement in any FOIA documentation. The NPS then stated that if I did want a list of missing people from Yosemite, that would cost $34,000, if we wanted the list from their entire system, that would be $1,400,000.

Chris Nicholson will delve into what the various parks offer to the photographer, and how to best research and prepare for a trip to explore the artistic opportunities within. Many locations will be discussed, with special emphasis on Acadia, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Olympic, Everglades and Great Smoky Mountains.

For example, the federal government counted 840,279 missing persons cases in 2001. All but about 50,000 were juveniles, classified as anyone younger than 18.
The National Center for Missing Adults, based in Phoenix, consistently tracks about 48,000 "active cases," says president Kym Pasqualini, although that number has been bumped up by nearly 11,000 reports of persons missing after this year's hurricanes.
In a phone interview, Pasqualini said a breakdown of the 48,000 cases reveals the democratic nature of America's missing persons.
Slightly more than half—about 25,500—of the missing are men. About four out of 10 missing adults are white, three of 10 black and two of 10 Latino.

In a lifetime of exploration, writing, and passionate political activism, John Muir became America's most eloquent spokesman for the mystery and majesty of the wilderness. A crucial figure in the creation of our national parks system and a far-seeing prophet of environmental awareness who founded the Sierra Club in 1892, he was also a master of natural description who evoked with unique power and intimacy the untrammeled landscapes of the American West. The Library of America's Nature Writings collects his most significant and best-loved works in a single volume, including: The Story of My

The world's first national park service was established May 19, 1911, in Canada. The Dominion Forest Reserves and Parks Act placed the dominion parks under the administration of the Dominion Park Branch (now Parks Canada). The branch was established to "protect sites of natural wonder" to provide a recreational experience, centered on the idea of the natural world providing rest and spiritual renewal from the urban setting. Canada now has the largest protected area in the world with 377,000 km² of national park space. In 1989, the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve (QNNP) was created to protect 3.381 million hectares on the north slope of Mo

Following the idea established in Yellowstone, there soon followed parks in other nations. In Australia, the Royal National Park was established just south of Sydney in 1879, becoming the world's second official national park (actually the 3rd: Mackinac National Park in Michigan was created in 1875 as a national park but was later transferred to the state's authority, thus losing its official "national park" status). Rocky Mountain National Park became Canada's first national park in 1885. New Zealand established Tongariro National Park in 1887. In Europe, the first national parks were a set of nine parks in Sweden in 1909, followed by the Sw

The first effort by any government[citation needed] to set aside such protected lands was in the United States, on April 20, 1832, when President Andrew Jackson signed legislation that the 22nd United States Congress had enacted to set aside four sections of land around what is now Hot Springs, Arkansas, to protect the natural, thermal springs and adjoining mountainsides for the future disposal of the U.S. government.[original research?] [not in citation given][16][not in citation given] It was known as Hot Springs Reservation, but no legal authority was established. Federal control of the area was not clearly established until 1877.

While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mac

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.

When the national park system was first established in 1916, the goal "to conserve unimpaired" seemed straightforward. But Robert Keiter argues that parks have always served a variety of competing purposes, from wildlife protection and scientific discovery to tourism and commercial development. In this trenchant analysis, he explains how parks must be managed more effectively to meet increasing demands in the face of climate, environmental, and demographic changes. Taking a topical approach, Keiter traces the history of the national park idea from its inception to its uncertain future. The

Leopard Kill - Delaporte Water hole, Kruger National Park
You only get a photo series like this when a unique combination of fortuitous moments and events come together. We were driving from Afsal to Skakuza on the tar road and had been watching lion cubs playing and interacting with their mother at the koppie on the turn off to Numbi Gate. As we reached the river crossing we saw two giraffe at the waterhole and - just as we were about to drive on - spotted a rhino emerging from the bushes to drink. We took the decision to stop and enjoyed the interaction as the rhino and giraffes jostled each other for a place to drink.
While we were watching some impala ran into the clearing and a car pulled up next to us with a report that a leopard had been seen. We watched and waited but after 10 minutes we were reaching the conclusion that he had almost certainly moved on. "Nearly seeing a leopard" is a common phenomenon on just about every Kruger drive! The rhino was moving off and another giraffe and impala buck emerged into the clearing - looking a bit skittish. The buck moved to the end of the waterhole and began to drink and we decided that it was time to move on.
As I started the car, the impala suddenly slipped on the concrete of the waterhole and fell in, splashing and thrashing about in a panic. I immediately pulled up my camera because it was an amusing and unusual sight and snapped a shot. As I did so, my daughter Emma shouted "Leopard!!!" and I opened my left eye to see him streaking across the open ground towards the stricken impala. Some combination of instinct and practice kicked in and I zoomed out and kept firing - the result of which was to capture a unique moment as the leopard leaped upon the impala. It was literally over in a matter of seconds.
We then witnessed the incredible strength of this animal that was larger than him and captured the moments as he hauled his prize out of the water hole and carried it away into the bushed for a well deserved meal.
It was the highlight of the trip and without doubt the best game viewing experience I have enjoyed in thirty years of visiting many of the world's best game parks,

The Koch Bros. have a new and exciting way in which they want to destroy America. It has to do with the fact that they're frustrated they can't buy our national parks. Step one - put astroturf op-eds in local newspapers as well as the NY Times. Step two - Tear apart the remaining green space in the country.

The Library of America's Nature Writings collects his most significant and best-loved works in a single volume, including: The Story of My Boyhood and Youth (1913), My First Summer in the Sierra (1911), The Mountains of California (1894) and Stickeen (1909). Rounding out the volume is a rich selection of essays—including "Yosemite Glaciers," "God's First Temples," "Snow-Storm on Mount Shasta," "The American Forests," and the late appeal "Save the Redwoods"—highlighting various aspects of his career: his exploration of the Grand Canyon and of what became Yosemite and Yellowstone national parks, his successful crusades to preserve the wilderness, his early walking tour to Florida, and the Alaska journey of 1879.

In 1989, the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve (QNNP) was created to protect 3.381 million hectares on the north slope of Mount Everest in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. This national park is the first major global park to have no separate warden and protection staff—all of its management being done through existing local authorities, allowing a lower cost basis and a larger geographical coverage (in 1989 when created, it was the largest protected area in Asia). It includes four of the six highest mountains Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The QNNP is contiguous to four Nepali national parks, creating a transborder conservation area equal in size to Switzerland.

In Europe, the first national parks were a set of nine parks in Sweden in 1909, followed by the Swiss National Park in 1914. Europe has some 359 national parks as of 2010.[citation needed] Africa's first national park was established in 1925 when Albert I of Belgium designated an area of what is now Democratic Republic of Congo centred on the Virunga Mountains as the Albert National Park (since renamed Virunga National Park). In 1973, Mount Kilimanjaro was classified as a National Park and was opened to public access in 1977. In 1926, the government of South Africa designated Kruger National Park as the nation's first national park, although it was an expansion of the earlier Sabie Game Reserve established in 1898 by President Paul Kruger of the old South African Republic, after whom the park was named. After World War II, national parks were founded all over the world. The Vanoise National Park in the Alps was the first French national park, created in 1963 after public mobilization against a touristic project.

Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, in California
John Muir is today referred to as the "Father of the National Parks" due to his work in Yosemite. He published two influential articles in The Century Magazine, which formed the base for the subsequent legislation.

In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.

A Ranger Pure and Simple. The Evolution of Parks and Park Rangers in America. B — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/pveamg8
Parks and park agencies face a huge challenge from a growing population and a society that is becoming out of touch with nature. Tom Smith is a former Chair of the Park Management Department at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, and a long time seasonal Yosemite and regional park ranger. In this book he explores the origin of parks in America, the problems parks and park agencies will face in the future, and how rangers are adapting to deal with this changing culture. “Tom Smith is a man who truly loves Parks. Equally, he loves the men and women who are sworn to maintain park resources, provide park interpretation, and protect the people who visit and enjoy parks on a daily basis.” —Paul Romero, Former Deputy Director, California State Parks “What distinguishes this book from others on the origins of the United States park movement is that Tom also provides a very personalized and often (behind the scenes) historical and contemporary analysis of the operational challenges for all park units and rangers nationwide.” —James Brady, Former Chief Ranger, National Park Service About the author: Thomas A. Smith is a retired coordinator and instructor in park management from West Valley College in Saratoga, California, and had over 20 years of experience as a seasonal park ranger with the National Park Service and the Santa Clara County Department of Parks and Recreation. In 1986, the County borrowed him from the College to act as an interim director/full-time consultant for the park system while they conducted a nationwide search for a new director. Tom served as the Director of the Region Five Recreation Academy for the United States Forest Service held at West Valley College for 11 years until retirement. He started and served as director of a highly successful in-service training program for park rangers at West Valley that served agencies throughout the West Coast. Tom received the first honorary lifetime membership to the Park Rangers Association of California (PRAC), and is one of the founding fathers of the organization. In 2012, he received the President’s Award from the California Association of Park and Recreation Boards and Commissioners for his contributions to parks and recreation in California.

To Conserve Unimpaired: The Evolution of the National Park Idea By Robert B. Ke — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/q43eguy
When the national park system was first established in 1916, the goal "to conserve unimpaired" seemed straightforward. But Robert Keiter argues that parks have always served a variety of competing purposes, from wildlife protection and scientific discovery to tourism and commercial development. In this trenchant analysis, he explains how parks must be managed more effectively to meet increasing demands in the face of climate, environmental, and demographic changes. Taking a topical approach, Keiter traces the history of the national park idea from its inception to its uncertain future. Thematic chapters explore our changing conceptions of the parks as wilderness sanctuaries, playgrounds, educational facilities, and more. He also examines key controversies that have shaped the parks and our perception of them. Ultimately, Keiter demonstrates that parks cannot be treated as special islands, but must be managed as the critical cores of larger ecosystems. Only when the National Park Service works with surrounding areas can the parks meet critical habitat, large-scale connectivity, clean air and water needs, and also provide sanctuaries where people can experience nature. Today's mandate must remain to conserve unimpaired—but Keiter shows how the national park idea can and must go much farther. Professionals, students, and scholars with an interest in environmental history, national parks, and federal land management, as well as scientists and managers working on adaptation to climate change should find the book useful and inspiring.

Leopard Kill - Delaporte Water hole, Kruger National Park

The Koch Brothers' Plan To Buy Our National Parks
The Koch Brothers' Plan To Buy Our National Parks
The Koch Bros. have a new and exciting way in which they want to destroy America. It has to do with the fact that they're frustrated they can't buy our national parks. Step one - put astroturf op-eds in local newspapers as well as the NY Times. Step two - Tear apart the remaining green space in the country.

Wonderful National Park
Wonderful National Park
The world's first national park service was established May 19, 1911, in Canada. The Dominion Forest Reserves and Parks Act placed the dominion parks under the administration of the Dominion Park Branch (now Parks Canada). The branch was established to "protect sites of natural wonder" to provide a recreational experience, centered on the idea of the natural world providing rest and spiritual renewal from the urban setting. Canada now has the largest protected area in the world with 377,000 km² of national park space.

Amazing National Park
Amazing National Park
Following the idea established in Yellowstone, there soon followed parks in other nations. In Australia, the Royal National Park was established just south of Sydney in 1879, becoming the world's second official national park (actually the 3rd: Mackinac National Park in Michigan was created in 1875 as a national park but was later transferred to the state's authority, thus losing its official "national park" status). Rocky Mountain National Park became Canada's first national park in 1885. New Zealand established Tongariro National Park in 1887.

Beauty Of National Park
Beauty Of National Park
The first effort by any government[citation needed] to set aside such protected lands was in the United States, on April 20, 1832, when President Andrew Jackson signed legislation that the 22nd United States Congress had enacted to set aside four sections of land around what is now Hot Springs, Arkansas, to protect the natural, thermal springs and adjoining mountainsides for the future disposal of the U.S. government.[original research?] [not in citation given][16][not in citation given] It was known as Hot Springs Reservation, but no legal authority was established. Federal control of the area was not clearly established until 1877.
Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, in California
John Muir is today referred to as the "Father of the National Parks" due to his work in Yosemite. He published two influential articles in The Century Magazine, which formed the base for the subsequent legislation.
