Female Fighters of Kurdistan (Part 1/3)
Come with us to Northern Iraq for a springtime frolic with the lovely lady guerillas of the Kurdish Liberation Movement.
Part 1 of 3: http://bit.ly/Female-Fighters-1
Part 2 of 3: http://bit.ly/Female-Fighters-2
Part 3 of 3: http://bit.ly/Female-Fighters-3
From Boudica of the British Celts to Corporal Klinger, few things unsettle the male mind like a lady in arms. The Kurds of Northern Iraq have long recognized this principle and incorporated it into their quest to build a Kurdish homeland in the overlap between Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. Fighting alongside their male comrades in a region not exactly known for its progressive stance on women's rights, the female Peshmerga guerillas of the Kurdish Liberation Movement built a reputation for themselves in the 70s and 80s as demure diaboliques with the deadly poise of Leila Khaled or Tania-era Patty Hearst.
Having secured the northern third of Iraq for themselves in the aftermath of the first Gulf War, the Kurds have spent the last two decades divesting themselves of their guerilla jamjams, building up a stable and booming economy in their semi-autonomous little hamlet, and generally enjoying not being in the middle of the current Iraq War. Up in the hills abutting Iran and Turkey, however, the struggle for a Greater Kurdistan continues for boy and girl alike.
The successors to Iraqi Kurdistan's old rebel militias are a milk-besodden Alphabits bowl of various Maoist, quasi-Maoist, and won't-say-they're-Maoist-but-come-on guerilla armies. You've got the PKK, the PJAK, the KCK—all of whom have slightly different tactics, territories, and ideologies but the same ultimate goal and, secretly, a lot of the same personnel. More importantly, they are all completely gender-equal, just like Mao wanted it. From the highest command to the lowest potato peeler to the ghillie-suited sniper on the front lines, dudes and dames do it the same.
We picked the youngest of these new Kurdish guerilla groups, PJAK, the Free Life for Kurdistan party, and drove up to their outpost on the Iranian border to see how their female fighters are helping their people draft a definitive answer to the Kurdish Question that's vexed Middle-Eastern politics for the last century. And hopefully find an answer to our own Kurdish Question. Which is, What the fuck is the Kurdish Question?

In a two-week offensive, Syrian Kurdish fighters of the YPG (People's Protection Units) recaptured dozens of villages and towns from Islamic State militants. It's one of the few successful anti-IS operations, as the militant group continues to take ground elsewhere in Syria and in neighboring Iraq. VOA Kurdish Service reporter Zana Omer is on the frontlines in Tal Shamiran, where the YPG are getting help from America, both in the air, and on the ground. Robert Raffaele narrates.

A Syrian Kurdish female combatant, who appeared on a BBC report in September, shot herself with a last bullet during fighting with militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) last week, according to media reports.
Ceylan Ozalp, 19, was reportedly surrounded by ISIS fighters near the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobane also known as Ain al-Arab. After she run out of ammunition Ozalp said “goodbye” over the radio and spent her last bullet on killing herself.
The reports of her suicide, which follows the beheading of seven men and three women by ISIS in Kobane earlier this week, took social media by storm and appeared in several Turkish n

Kurdish Singer ready to risk it all for Kurdistan independence
Kurdish singer Helly Luv ready to 'Risk it All' for independence
Kurdish pop singer Helly Luv says she will not be put off by death threats from Iraqi Islamist militants since release of her first music video but, drawing on its title, insists she will "Risk It All" to help a push for an independent Kurdistan.
Iraqi-born Luv, 25, has seen her video rack up more than 2.5 million views on YouTube since its release in February; but she has faced criticism for what some see as provocative imagery in the clip accompanying the modern mix of dance, hip-hop and traditional Middle Eastern music.
Luv said the video, which includes exploding petrol bombs, backing dancers with AK-47 rifles, and the singer dancing in a mid-thigh silver dress atop a citadel, represents the Kurdish spirit and struggle for an independent state.
"There were death threats from many Islamic groups... it was a really hard time for me," Luv said in an interview in Arbil, the autonomous Kurdistan region's capital. "(But) my whole message is that, Kurdish people, we need to risk everything for our dreams and fight for our country."
Iraqi Kurdistan's population of roughly 5 million people has enjoyed a degree of independence from Baghdad since the end of the first Gulf War in the early 1990s.
But the Kurds are now closer than ever to leaving Iraq altogether, with Massoud Barzani, leader of their autonomous region, calling on his parliament to ready a referendum on independence after the latest violence in the country.
Critics argue that Kurdish leaders' actions could lead to broader chaos in Iraq and beyond its borders, promoting rebellions in Kurdish areas of neighbouring states.Luv's mother was a Kurdish 'peshmerga' fighter before the family emigrated during the Iran-Iraq War.
"You can see in Kurdistan right now that people don’t want war, we have been through so much already," Luv said. "We have fought so much to get this freedom, so we're not going to let nobody take it away."
Her management team declined to say whether any of the death threats she had received came from the Islamic State, the group previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), saying they did not want to give any of the groups or individuals publicity.
The Islamic State's lightning takeover of the northern city of Mosul and advance towards Baghdad stirred the latest crisis in Iraq, and saw the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government expand its borders and take over oil areas as Iraqi military forces retreated.
Luv recently visited Kurdish peshmerga forces that have been involved in skirmishes with the Islamic State.
Photos on her Facebook page show her wearing an old-style peshmerga uniform, red and black scarf and aviator sunglasses, standing before ranks of black-uniformed Kurdish troops.

President of Iraqi Kurdistan: 'We don't need boots on the ground'
In interview with i24news, Massoud Barzani says Kurds require arms to continue battling IS
Iraq's Kurdish forces need international help to reinforce their military equipment and weaponry as part of their ongoing battle against the Islamic State, but do not require a ground operation from the US-led coalition, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan said.
In an interview slated to be aired on i24news Monday, Massoud Barzani thanked the international coalition for its help so far in the battle against Islamist groups in the region.
The peshmerga have emerged as a key partner for the coalition in its campaign to “degrade and destroy” the extremist group, which they have driven back in northern Iraq with the help of airstrikes.
"We want to thank them and express our gratitude," Barzani said. "Everything that has been done until today is exceptional, but what we need and what we expect has not yet come to pass."
"I am referring especially to the issue of equipping the peshmerga forces on the ground with the kinds of weapon systems that we need in order to carry out a ground operation," he added, noting that the Kurds did not however require the support of foreign troops.

Commander Sirwan Barzani said. The Iraqi government considers the peshmerga merely a regional force and controls their funding, he says. In recent months, Baghdad hasn’t given them much money or weaponry, and it’s even imposed strict salary caps for the peshmerga. The New York Times reported last month (http://goo.gl/LOMaz3) that Commander Sirwan Barzani had dipped into his own personal funds to provide cars, food, and weapons for his troops.

Syria: Syria's Kurdish population 'part of the Syrian fabric' - Assad
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad said Syria’s Kurdish community was “part of the Syrian fabric,” during an interview with RT’s Lizzie Phelan and Sargon Hadaya and other Russian journalists in Damascus, on Tuesday.

Newroz TV, 1 hour; analyzing the ways of struggle with Iranian government; self-determination, self-defense of Kurds. I discussed and analyzed the opinions of leader of KDPI, Xalid Azizi in one of his interviews with a website (source) and asking him to answer my critiques. (this program held in Persian language)
In this interview I analyzed right to self-defence of Kurdish people against Iranian government in defending their basic human rights in accordance with international law. Also I analyzed the policy of various political parties regarding Iran. In this program I analyzed the consequences of locating some Kurdish political parties in Kurdistan Regional Government in their policy towards Iranian government. I said because some Kurdish political parties reside in KRG they were weakened and their policy towards Iran softened. Also the KRG severely restrict their activities.
Also, and the important thing is that in this interview, I spoke in support of armed struggle of PJAK against brutality of Iran government and positive consequences of this armed struggle for asserting our rights. Also, in this interview, I analyzed the propaganda by Iranian government against PJAK to discredit this party among Kurdish people. it is important to mention that during my interview the tension and armed conflict between PJAK and Iranian government was in its highest degree.

New video of jordan Matson - short interview after battle
from may 22, 2015
In a two-week offensive, Syrian Kurdish fighters of the YPG (People's Protection Units) recaptured dozens of villages and towns from Islamic State militants.

Kurdish female fighter ‘killed herself’ to avoid being ISIS hostage
A Syrian Kurdish female combatant, who appeared on a BBC report in September, shot herself with a last bullet during fighting with militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) last week, according to media reports.
Ceylan Ozalp, 19, was reportedly surrounded by ISIS fighters near the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobane also known as Ain al-Arab. After she run out of ammunition Ozalp said “goodbye” over the radio and spent her last bullet on killing herself.
The reports of her suicide, which follows the beheading of seven men and three women by ISIS in Kobane earlier this week, took social media by storm and appeared in several Turkish news websites such as the daily Radikal.
But other reports suggested Ozalp, also known as Diren –which means “resist” in Turkish, never left the northern Syrian town of Jezaa, which is still under the Kurdish control, according to International Business Times.
Al Arabiya News Channel could not independently verify the authenticity of the report on her suicide.
During her interview with the BBC last month, Ozalp said: “We’re not scared of anything…We’ll fight to the last. We’d rather blow ourselves up than be captured by IS (ISIS).”
“When they see a woman with a gun, they’re so afraid they begin to shake. They portray themselves as tough guys to the world. But when they see us with our guns they run away. They see a woman as just a small thing. But one of our women is worth a hundred of their men,” Ozalp told the BBC.
Like Ozalp, many Syrian Kurdish women have joined the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), an offshoot of the guerrilla group, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Pictures of these Syrian Kurdish female combatants carrying their Kalashnikovs, or those of their Kurdish Iraqi counterparts - the Peshmergettes - stand out as a striking anomaly in the region’s often male-dominated conflicts.
Several reports accuse ISIS of using female hostages as sex-slaves, often citing stories of Yazidi women – or other minorities – being married off to ISIS fighters.
The United Nations last week said ISIS has committed mass killings, kidnapped women and girls and used them as sex slaves and employed children as fighters, in systematic violations that may amount to war crimes.
