Illegal is a 1955 American film noir directed by Lewis Allen. It stars Edward G. Robinson, Nina Foch, Hugh Marlowe and Jayne Mansfield.
Victor Scott (Edward G. Robinson) is a District Attorney with a drive to win every case. He is assisted by fellow attorney Ellen Miles (Nina Foch) who is not quite as hard-driving, but is devoted to her D.A. boss. After Scott discovers that one of the men he sent to his death is innocent, he falls into a drunken haze, is arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct, and determines to defend one of his fellow incarcerated. This leads to a new career as a defense attorney.
In the process Scott ends up defending an associate of the city's crime boss, a man he refused to work for earlier in the film due to the fact that “...no one would testify against you; you own the people who work for you”. This, in turn, leads him into direct confrontation with the very office he used to head.
Over the course of the film Ellen Miles' kills her husband in self defense and Scott determines to defend her as there are no witnesses. There is a sub-plot here involving Ellen Miles husband, the crime boss, and an ongoing leak between the D.A.s office and the crime boss. The leak turns out to be Ellen's husband, Ray Borden. The new D.A., not knowing this, determines that Ellen herself is the leak and that she has murdered her husband when found out.

We speak English, not Mexican!
Who would have thought
That you could hurt me
The way you've done it?
So deliberate, so determined
And since you have been gone
I bite my nails for days and hours
And question my own questions on and on
So tell me now, tell me now
Why you're so far away
When I'm still so close
You don't even know the meaning of the words "I'm sorry"
You said you would love me until you die
And as far as I know you're still alive, baby
You don't even know the meaning of the words "I'm sorry"
I'm starting to believe it should be illegal to deceive a woman's heart
I tried so hard to be attentive
To all you wanted
Always supportive, always patient
What did I do wrong?
I'm wondering for days and hours
It's clear, it isn't here where you belong
Anyhow, anyhow
I wish you both all the best
I hope you get along
But you don't even know the meaning of the words "I'm sorry"
You said you would love me until you die
And as far as I know you're still alive, baby
You don't even know the meaning of the words "I'm sorry"
I'm starting to believe it should be illegal to deceive a woman's heart
You don't even know the meaning of the words "I'm sorry"
You said you would love me until you die
And as far as I know you're still alive, baby
You don't even know the meaning of the words "I'm sorry"
I'm starting to believe it should be illegal to deceive a woman's heart
Open heart
Open heart
It should be illegal to deceive a woman's heart
Open heart
Open heart
Mail from you to me
sent across the sea
you said the package would be here
within the next to weeks
and i thought
impossible - illegal
whole month passed
no sign yet, i somehow doubt
you would forget
illegal music, no chance to use it.
maybe it's not so rough
just smoke all the local stuff
I put my money on love again
At a hundred to one
I dealt my losing out
I'll just try til I win
Or see how close I can come
Oh it should be illegal
It gets me so high
I can fly like an eagle
Night after night
I've known people who have thrown in the towel
Just cause they've lost once or twice
But it takes a believer to put all this faith
In the toss of the dice
Oh it should be illegal
It gets me so high
I can fly like an eagle
Night after night
Oh it should be illegal
It gets me so high
I can fly like an eagle
I live my life illegal
I live my life illegal
