Title of film:
The
Media in Brunei:
Behind The
Regulation and
The Rise of New Media
• A brief description/synopsis of your film:
This video aims to educate the viewers on the state of media in
Brunei as well as the use of the new media by Bruneian media users. We shall show certain contents that have gone viral in the new media (e.g
Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, etc.) specifically in Brunei and explain why the use of new media in Brunei seems to be lacking in proper regulation and monitoring. We will also mention the external regulations that have been done by the government and further question whether those efforts are enough to control the usage of new media in Brunei. We shall also introduce the
D.R.U.M.S which will be further explained in the video.
We have adopted a newscast and documentary style to our film as our aim is to show the state of media in Brunei and how new media is being utilised by the media users here. Most references are taken online from trusted government websites such as AiTi Brunei. We look into books and journals for our general understanding on the role of media and why regulation is important.
• In
point form only, things in the video you wish to highlight to me (a particular shot? a particular argument/content? A particular sound/ piece of music? A particular style?
Etc.)
We have brought up the issue of media users in Brunei utilising the new media to rapidly share content or information that may contain the D.R.U.M.S.
We have explained that media users in Brunei should be more responsible in the content that they might share in the new media and not to accept every information or content shared at face-value and be more wary of further sharing it to the mass public.
Apart from external regulation from the government, internal regulation or self-regulation is important where media users are aware of the content they may receive in the new media and be critical of believing it and further sharing it to their connections in the new media platforms.
• Self-reflection:
Things you wish could have done better, or differently, with your video and your reasons why.
We are aware of what is lacking in the film especially in terms of content and understanding of what media regulation actually is. We have tried to relate as much to Brunei where we try to show how media regulation is done and why media regulation is important especially with the use of new media such as the internet and social networking sites.
Considering that this is a level 4000 module, our group being all 2nd year students are finding it tough to cope with the demand for the film. We need further understanding on media regulation and probably even do more research on Brunei's media regulation and its current updates. We have tried with whatever resources and time we have, with whatever understanding we have on the subject to produce this film for the module. There is also not much reference for the state of media in Brunei therefore most of our explanation are very generic and are based on our own understanding and observation of the media in Brunei.
We think we could have done a better job if all of our group members are able to synchronize our time with one another to do work in this film assignment. However due to each and of us taking different modules, our free times are also different thus limiting the options for us to sit down together and working on this assignment. Our lack in knowledge in video recording also limits our ability to provide a good presentation in the film and that we took too much time experimenting with different styles and approaches in recording.
Simply said, we know we could have done better in filming and explaining media regulation.
