The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA or PIRA) was an Irish republican paramilitary organisation that sought to remove Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom and bring about an independent republic encompassing all of Ireland. It emerged in December 1969—after the beginning of the Troubles—when the Irish Republican Army split over ideology and how to respond to attacks on Catholics in Northern Ireland. "It is our pledge to defend the most vulnerable, to protect public services and deliver a new and better future for this society.

And I believe one should work with people with whom you don’t agree because just talking to people who you agree with isn’t going to bring about a long term settlement in the Middle East. Hypocrite Enda Kenny hates Sinn Fein. He deplores Republicans for their role in the troubles, a conflict he knows nothing about and tries to distinguish them from the old IRA or the men of 1916 which had no mandate and did the same things as the IRA of the Troubles yet he calls them Heroes. He is against a United Ireland for political reasons. If a United Ireland were to happen, it would mean a Sinn Fein government and thus not favour his political party. A sell out to Ireland. The Violent Struggles of Northern Ireland: History of the IRA and Sinn Fein (1998)
Catholic demands for civil rights had been met with violence from Ulster loyalists and from the government of Northern Ireland, culminating in the August 1969 riots and deployment of British troops.
The Provisional IRA was the biggest and most active republican paramilitary during the Troubles. It saw itself as the only rightful successor to the original IRA and called itself simply the Irish Republican Army (IRA), or Óglaigh na hÉireann in Irish. It was also widely referred to as such by others. The IRA is a proscribed organisation in the UK under the Terrorism Act 2000 and an unlawful organisation in the Republic of Ireland. The United States includes them in the category of "other selected terrorist groups also deemed of relevance in the global war on terrorism."

Sinn Féin (/ʃɪn ˈfeɪn/ shin-FAYN)[2] is an Irish republican political party active in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The name is Irish for "ourselves" or "we ourselves",[3][4] although it is frequently mistranslated as "ourselves alone".[5] Originating in the Sinn Féin organisation founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith, it took its current form in 1970 after a split within the party (the other party is the Workers' Party of Ireland), and has been associated with the Provisional Irish Republican Army.[6] Gerry Adams has been party president since 1983.
Sinn Féin is currently the second-largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, where it has four ministerial posts in the power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive, and the fourth-largest party in the Oireachtas, the parliament of the Republic. Sinn Féin also received a plurality of Northern Ireland votes in the 2010 United Kingdom general election, although the Democratic Unionist Party won more seats.

The Remembrance Day bombing (also known as the Enniskillen bombing or Poppy Day massacre) took place on 8 November 1987 in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. A Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) bomb exploded near the town's war memorial (cenotaph) during a Remembrance Sunday ceremony, which was being held to commemorate British military war dead. Eleven people (ten civilians and a police officer) were killed and 63 were injured. The IRA said it had made a mistake and that its target had been the British soldiers parading to the memorial. The unit who carried out the bombing was disbanded.
The bombing was strongly condemned by all sides and weakened the IRA's and Sinn Féin's support. It also facilitated the passing of the Extradition Act, which made it easier to extradite IRA suspects from the Republic of Ireland to the UK. Loyalist paramilitaries responded to the bombing with 'revenge' attacks on Catholic civilians. The bombing has been described as a turning point in the Troubles and an incident that shook the IRA "to its core".

The Harrods bombing usually refers to the car bomb that exploded outside Harrods department store in central London on Saturday 17 December 1983. Members of the Provisional IRA planted the time bomb and sent a warning 37 minutes before it exploded, but the area was not evacuated. The blast killed three police officers and three civilians, injured 90 people, and caused much damage. The IRA Army Council claimed it had not authorised the attack and expressed regret for the civilian casualties. The IRA had been bombing commercial targets in England since the early 1970s, as part of its "economic war". The goal was to damage the economy and cause disruption, which would put pressure on the British government to withdraw from Northern Ireland.
Harrods was the target of a much smaller IRA bomb almost ten years later, in January 1993, which injured four people.

At the meeting the PSNI senior team acknowledged the role played by Sinn Féin in supporting the PSNI and opposing violence and criminality.
Following the meeting Gerry Kelly said,
“The killings of Jock Davison and Kevin McGuigan, was nothing to do with republicanism. It was an act of criminality.
“Their families deserve justice. It is imperative the PSNI continues to investigate and bring to court those involved.
“We called again on people with any information connected to these killings to bring it forward to the police.
“We raised concerns about a number of speculative and unhelpful comments made recently.
“We rejected any suggestion the IRA was involved in the killing of Kevin McGuigan. The IRA stood down over 10 years ago.
“It is clear the group Action Against Drugs is a criminal gang totally opposed to the peace process and Sinn Féin.
“This group has been involved in extortion, intimidation and murder in nationalist communities and issued threats against anyone suspected of involvement in the killing of Gerard Davison. These are not the actions of republicans, but of criminals.

Sinn Féin Election Manifesto launch - Equality NOT Austerity
Sinn Féin MLA Martin McGuinness has said Sinn Féin is the only party in the North at this election firmly opposed to austerity.
Speaking at the launch of Sinn Féin's Westminster election manifesto in Ranfurly House, Dungannon, Mr McGuinness said;
"This manifesto represents Sinn Féin's commitment to the electorate. It is our vow to continue to resist the disastrous agenda of Tory austerity in Ireland.
"It is our pledge to defend the most vulnerable, to protect public services and deliver a new and better future for this society.
"It is now clear that British governments, of whatever hue, will continue to impose austerity on our society.
"Sinn Féin is the only party in the North at this election firmly opposed to austerity and with a proven track record in negotiations.
"Following this election Sinn Féin will be seeking an immediate negotiation with the incoming British Government to secure a viable budget to deliver public services; return economic powers to promote growth, jobs and prosperity and protect those most in need.
"A new budget is required to end austerity and we need the fiscal powers necessary to determine our own economic policy, to stabilise the political institutions and build on the progress of the peace process."

Vote Yes for Marriage Equality - Sinn Féin launch
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD, speaking at the launch of the party’s Referendum campaign, has urged voters to “give a resounding Yes to both referendum issues”.
Teachta Adams said:
“In just five weeks’ time two referendums will be held. One is to reduce the eligibility age for a candidate for the Presidential elections. The second is on marriage equality.
“Sinn Féin is calling for a Yes vote in both referendums.
“In respect of the Marriage Equality Referendum, many of us will have a member of our family or extended family who is gay. All of us, whatever age we are or wherever we live or work, know someone who is gay.
“They want what we want – the right to live their lives as full and contributing citizens and to share in the love of a family of their own.
“I would also appeal for everyone to join the campaign for a Yes Vote.

Jeremy Corbyn on Hamas, Hezbollah, Likud & Sinn Fein
Jeremy Corbyn stated "I chaired a meeting discussing the Middle East and the Middle East Peace Process, I have indeed met people with whom I profoundly disagree on many things in order to try and bring about a peace process. I worked with and met Sinn Fein in the 1980s in order to try and promote a Northern Ireland peace process. And I believe one should work with people with whom you don’t agree because just talking to people who you agree with isn’t going to bring about a long term settlement in the Middle East. I have also met people in Likud and very many right wing parties in Israel because at some point there has to be talks. Already Israel is talking to Hamas. The former head of Mosad has said there has to be negotiations involving them. I think we have to be serious about bringing about a long term peace."
In response to being asked by Victoria Derbyshire to clarify his position on Hezbollah and Hamas.

Enda Kenny on why he hates Sinn Fein
Hypocrite Enda Kenny hates Sinn Fein. He deplores Republicans for their role in the troubles, a conflict he knows nothing about and tries to distinguish them from the old IRA or the men of 1916 which had no mandate and did the same things as the IRA of the Troubles yet he calls them Heroes. He is against a United Ireland for political reasons. If a United Ireland were to happen, it would mean a Sinn Fein government and thus not favour his political party. A sell out to Ireland. Ireland's very own Thatcher!

How do you define a troubles victim in Northern Ireland?
Well there are plans for pensions to be handed out to victims left severely injured by the Troubles.
Should it include ex-paramilitaries, even those who planted bombs and fired bullets?
