Martina Anderson (born 16 April 1962) is an Irish politician in Northern Ireland who is a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing Northern Ireland for Sinn Féin. She is a former volunteer of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). Between 2007 and 2012 she was an MLA representing Foyle.
Anderson was born in the Bogside in Derry, Northern Ireland, into a large family with a tradition of Irish republicanism. Her father was a Protestant. She has six sisters and three brothers, one of whom, Peter, is a Sinn Féin councillor.
Anderson was arrested aged 18 leaving a furniture store in Derry and charged with possession of a firearm and causing an explosion. She was released on bail after spending two months in Armagh Women's Prison, and fled across the border to Buncrana in County Donegal.
Anderson was again arrested on 24 June 1985 at a flat in Glasgow with four other IRA members including Brighton bomber Patrick Magee. On 11 June 1986, all five were convicted of conspiring to cause explosions in England, although Magee was the only person convicted in relation to the Brighton hotel bombing.

Sinn Féin (/ʃɪn ˈfeɪn/ shin-FAYNIrish pronunciation: [ʃɪnʲ ˈfʲeːnʲ]) is an Irish republican political party active in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The name is Irish for "ourselves" or "we ourselves", although it is frequently mistranslated as "ourselves alone". Originating in the Sinn Féin organisation founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith, it took its current form in 1970 after a split within the party (the other party became the Workers' Party of Ireland), and has been historically associated with the IRA.Gerry Adams has been party president since 1983.
Sinn Féin is currently the second-largest party behind the Democratic Unionist Party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, where it has four ministerial posts in the power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive, and the fourth-largest party in the Oireachtas, the parliament of the Republic. Sinn Féin also received the second highest number of Northern Ireland votes and seats in the 2015 Westminster elections, behind the DUP.
Northern Ireland (Irish: Tuaisceart Éireann [ˈt̪ˠuəʃcəɾˠt̪ˠ ˈeːɾʲən̪ˠ]; Ulster Scots: Norlin Airlann) is a constituent unit of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the northeast of the island of Ireland. It is variously described as a country, province, region, or "part" of the United Kingdom, amongst other terms. Northern Ireland shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. In 2011, its population was 1,810,863, constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the UK's population. Established by the Northern Ireland Act 1998 as part of the Good Friday Agreement, the Northern Ireland Assembly holds responsibility for a range of devolved policy matters, while other areas are reserved for the British government. Northern Ireland co-operates with the Republic of Ireland in some areas, and the Agreement granted the Republic the ability to "put forward views and proposals" with "determined efforts to resolve disagreements between the two governments".
Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson has urged the European Parliament to respect the wishes of the people of Northern Ireland to remain a part of the European Union. But in an address to MEPs she also attacked the European Commission and European Council for their "anti-democratic practices and anti-social policies". The UK as a whole voted by 51.9% to 48.1% to leave to EU in a referendum last week, but Northern Ireland voted by 55.8% to 44.2% to remain.

MEP Martina Anderson yesterday likened the presence of Israelis in the European Parliament to "a rash".
Martina Anderson MEPs like Diane Dodds and Marine Le pen would say that we in the North of Ireland are bind by a UK vote. We say we are not. And like the previous MPE Mr. Smith we ask you to respect our vote. We stand by the vote of the people of the North of Ireland just like Scotland, which voted remain. We accept, we respect and we will defend the wishes of the people of the North of Ireland. However, if English vote drugs us out of the EU that would be like Britania waves the rules. There was a democratic vote. We voted to remain. I tell you that the last thing that the people of Ireland need is an EU border with 27 member-states stop right in the middle of it. You and the EU you have supported our peace process. And I ask you to continue to do that. Sinn Fein, we worked for a strong...
