Canada Reform and Rebellion against Britain The Lower Canada Rebellion (French: La rébellion du Bas-Canada), commonly referred to as the Patriots' War (French: la Guerre des patriotes) by Quebecers, is the name given to the armed conflict between the rebels of Lower Canada (now Quebec) and the British colonial power of that province. Together with the simultaneous Upper Canada Rebellion in the neighbouring colony of Upper Canada (now Ontario), it formed the Rebellions of 1837, These events are often misreported,[citation needed] which moves the attention away from three decades of political battles between the Parti patriote of James Stuart and Louis-Joseph Papineau, who were seeking accountability from the elected government and governor of the colony. However, the unelected body was dominated by a small group of mainly businessmen known as the Château Clique, the equivalent of the Family Compact in Upper Canada.
The movement for reform took shape in a period of economic disfranchisement of the French-speaking majority and working-class English-speaking citizens. But the rebellion focused on the unfairness of colonial governing as such, as many of the leaders and participants were English-speaking citizens of Lower Canada. In banking, the timber trade, and transportation, Anglophones were seen as disproportionately represented. At the same time, some among the Anglophone business elite were advocating for a union of Upper and Lower Canada to ensure competitiveness on a national scale with the increasingly large and powerful economy of the United States (who, in part, inspired the rebels by their own successful war of independence). The unification of the colony was a plan favoured by the British-appointed governor, George Ramsey, Earl of Dalhousie. The reaction was a growing sense of nationalism among English and the French-speaking citizens, which solidified into the Parti canadien (after 1826 called the Parti patriote).
In 1811, James Stuart became leader of the Parti Canadien in the assembly and in 1815, reformer Louis-Joseph Papineau was elected Assembly speaker. The Assembly, while elected, had little power; its decisions could be vetoed by a legislative council and the governor appointed by the British government. Dalhousie and Papineau were soon at odds over the issue of uniting the Canadas. Dalhousie forced an election in 1827 rather than accept Papineau as speaker. Sympathizers to the reform movement in England had Dalhousie forced from his position and reappointed to India. Still, the legislative council and the assembly were not able to reach a compromise. By 1834, the assembly had passed the Ninety-Two Resolutions, outlining its grievances against the legislative council. At that point, the Patriote movement was supported by an overwhelming majority of the population of all origins.

A moderate reformer named John Neilson had quit the party in 1830 and joined the Constitutional Association four years later. Papineau's anti-clerical position alienated reformers in the Catholic Church, and his support for secular rather than religious schools made him a powerful enemy in Bishop Jean-Jacques Lartigue. Lartigue called on all Catholics to reject the reform movement and support the authorities, forcing many to choose between their religion and their political convictions.
Following the military defeat of the Patriotes, Lower Canada was merged with Upper Canada under the Union Act. The Canadiens barely remained a majority in the new political entity, and with continued emigration to the English-speaking part of Canada, this dominance was short lived. Eight years after the Union, a responsible government was set up in the united Province of Canada. The great instability of this new regime (see Joint Premiers of the Province of Canada) led to the formation of the Great coalition, and another major constitutional change, the Canadian Confederation of 1867.
The rebellion of the Patriotes Canadiens of Lower Canada, taken along with the Upper Canadian Rebellion, is often seen as the example of what might have happened to the United States of America if the American Revolutionary War had failed. In Quebec, the rebellion (as well as the parliamentary and popular struggle) is now commemorated as the Journée nationale des Patriotes (National Patriotes Day) by the use of the Canadian Statutory Holiday, Victoria Day. It has become a symbol for the contemporary Quebec independence movement (and to a lesser extent a symbol of Canada's small republican movement).

Canada (
/ˈkænədə/) is a North American country consisting of ten provinces and three territories. Located in the northern part of the continent, it extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west, and northward into the Arctic Ocean. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy; the Canada Act 1982 severed the vestiges of legal dependence on Britain.

Canada Reform and Rebellion against Britain The Lower Canada Rebellion (French: La rébellion du Bas-Canada), commonly referred to as the Patriots' War (French: la Guerre des patriotes) by Quebecers, is the name given to the armed conflict between the rebels of Lower Canada (now Quebec) and the British colonial power of that province. Together with the simultaneous Upper Canada Rebellion in the neighbouring colony of Upper Canada (now Ontario), it formed the Rebellions of 1837, These events are often misreported,[citation needed] which moves the attention away from three decades of political battles between the Parti patriote of James Stuart and Louis-Joseph Papineau, who were seeking accountability from the elected government and governor of the colony. The movement for reform took shape in a period of economic disfranchisement of the French-speaking majority and working-class English-speaking citizens. But the rebellion focused on the unfairness of colonial governing as such, as many of the leaders and participants were English-speaking citizens of Lower Canada. In banking, the timber trade, and transportation, Anglophones were seen as disproportionately represented. At the same time, some among the Anglophone business elite were advocating for a union of Upper and Lower Canada to ensure competitiveness on a national scale with the increasingly large and powerful economy of the United States (who, in part, inspired the rebels by their own successful war of independence). The unification of the colony was a plan favoured by the British-appointed governor, George Ramsey, Earl of Dalhousie. The reaction was a growing sense of nationalism among English and the French-speaking citizens, which solidified into the Parti canadien (after 1826 called the Parti patriote).
In 1811, James Stuart became leader of the Parti Canadien in the assembly and in 1815, reformer Louis-Joseph Papineau was elected Assembly speaker. The Assembly, while elected, had little power; its decisions could be vetoed by a legislative council and the governor appointed by the British government. Dalhousie and Papineau were soon at odds over the issue of uniting the Canadas. Dalhousie forced an election in 1827 rather than accept Papineau as speaker. Sympathizers to the reform movement in England had Dalhousie forced from his position and reappointed to India. Still, the legislative council and the assembly were not able to reach a compromise. By 1834, the assembly had passed the Ninety-Two Resolutions, outlining its grievances against the legislative council. At that point, the Patriote movement was supported by an overwhelming majority of the population of all origins.

The Canadiens barely remained a majority in the new political entity, and with continued emigration to the English-speaking part of Canada, this dominance was short lived. Eight years after the Union, a responsible government was set up in the united Province of Canada. The great instability of this new regime (see Joint Premiers of the Province of Canada) led to the formation of the Great coalition, and another major constitutional change, the Canadian Confederation of 1867.
The rebellion of the Patriotes Canadiens of Lower Canada, taken along with the Upper Canadian Rebellion, is often seen as the example of what might have happened to the United States of America if the American Revolutionary War had failed. In Quebec, the rebellion (as well as the parliamentary and popular struggle) is now commemorated as the Journée nationale des Patriotes (National Patriotes Day) by the use of the Canadian Statutory Holiday, Victoria Day. We chose to stay in the neighborhood of Le Plateau-Mont Royal. On Sunday afternoons you'll find a huge drumming circle on the east end of Mount Royal called Tam Tams. McGill University is one of the most prestigious universities in all of Canada. Poutine, a French Canadian dish, it is basically french fries with gravy and cheese curds on top. For a taste of French charm, wander down the cobbled streets of Old Montreal. For fine dining and shopping in trendy boutiques, you can pop into the Bonsecours Market. Habitat 67 is a unique housing complex and is an architectural landmark. Whether you visit Montreal in the summer or winter, there are always festivals going on. Tonight we're at the Cirque du Soleil for a circus performance. The biodome is a popular attraction for families with children. Olympic Stadium is the former home of the Montreal Expos. The botanical gardens are home to beautiful gardens. Bell Center is home to the Montreal Canadiens, one of the most celebrated NHL franchises. There is no better place ot eat smoked meat in Montreal than Schwartz. The Notre Dame Basilica is located in the historic district of Old Montreal. If you enjoy checking out graffiti around Saint Catherine street which is also a shopping district. Most of the downtown area is interconnected by underground shopping areas so you don't have to be out in the cold. Fredericton is a city that offers culture vultures numerous historic buildings and attractions including top notch museums. For the adventure traveler or sports enthusiast extensive bike trails and the St John River offer endless exercise opportunities.
This summer we travelled out to Fredericton, New Brunswick to visit family. With a few weeks in town, we decided to make a little video guide to give you a taste of Atlantic Canada. Here's a look at 21 things you can do around the city:

Visiting King's Landing was like travelling back in time. We got to see the interior of old homes, churches, and barns from the 1800s, and for those looking to get their hands dirty, there was the option of pitching in with some of the farm work. The garrison district is the historic and cultural heart of Fredericton. This is where you can catch free performances, join heritage walking tours, and watch the changing of the guard. The Lighthouse on the Green stands on the banks of the St. John River. Though it once helped guide fishermen to shore, today the lighthouse is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy some seafood or even cool down with an ice cream. The nice thing about Fredericton is that you're never too far from nature. The city has many walking trails and biking paths that are easily accessible, and that means people spend a lot of time outdoors.
This former railway bridge is now popular with pedestrians. It has great views of the St. John River and the 2 university campuses that sit up on the hill. Waterloo Row is one of the prettiest streets in the city. It is lined with historic homes and mansions that look over the river. If you happen to be in town over the weekend, be sure to check out the Farmers' Market for some delicious eats!
The Nashwaak Trail is part of an extensive trail system and it's great for either walking or biking. We managed to spot quite a bit of wildlife during our outing, including a Great Blue Heron, a beaver, and lots of chipmunks. Gallery 78 is the oldest private art gallery in New Brunswick and it hosts exhibitions throughout the year. Christ Church Cathedral has a very active music schedule. During the summer months they host choirs and recitals. Admission is by donation with the proceeds going back into the community. The Legislative Building is the home to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. Guided visits must be arranged in advance. For art lovers, there's the option of visiting the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. This gallery features the work of both Canadian and international artists. Odell Park is a massive park located in the middle of Fredericton. It has many trails that run through the forest and some of the trees there are believed to be over 400 years old. This is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, and it's where foreign dignitaries visiting Fredericton stay. This former jail turned science centre is a fun place for children. The university of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University have a shared campus with beautiful grounds. Even if you're not a student, the campus is worth a visit. If you're looking to catch a performance, then head down to the Playhouse. They host all sorts of music, dance, and theatre productions. And that's a little glimpse of Fredericton. We really enjoyed our summer visit to the city, and we hope you'll have the chance to check it out too!

Fredericton is a city that offers culture vultures numerous historic buildings and attractions including top notch museums. For the adventure traveler or sports enthusiast extensive bike trails and the St John River offer endless exercise opportunities.
This summer we travelled out to Fredericton, New Brunswick to visit family. With a few weeks in town, we decided to make a little video guide to give you a taste of Atlantic Canada. Here's a look at 21 things you can do around the city:

Visiting King's Landing was like travelling back in time. We got to see the interior of old homes, churches, and barns from the 1800s, and for those looking to get their hands dirty, there was the option of pitching in with some of the farm work. The garrison district is the historic and cultural heart of Fredericton. This is where you can catch free performances, join heritage walking tours, and watch the changing of the guard. The Lighthouse on the Green stands on the banks of the St. John River. Though it once helped guide fishermen to shore, today the lighthouse is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy some seafood or even cool down with an ice cream. The nice thing about Fredericton is that you're never too far from nature. The city has many walking trails and biking paths that are easily accessible, and that means people spend a lot of time outdoors.
This former railway bridge is now popular with pedestrians. It has great views of the St. John River and the 2 university campuses that sit up on the hill. Waterloo Row is one of the prettiest streets in the city. It is lined with historic homes and mansions that look over the river. If you happen to be in town over the weekend, be sure to check out the Farmers' Market for some delicious eats!
The Nashwaak Trail is part of an extensive trail system and it's great for either walking or biking. We managed to spot quite a bit of wildlife during our outing, including a Great Blue Heron, a beaver, and lots of chipmunks. Gallery 78 is the oldest private art gallery in New Brunswick and it hosts exhibitions throughout the year. Christ Church Cathedral has a very active music schedule. During the summer months they host choirs and recitals. Admission is by donation with the proceeds going back into the community. The Legislative Building is the home to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. Guided visits must be arranged in advance. For art lovers, there's the option of visiting the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. This gallery features the work of both Canadian and international artists. Odell Park is a massive park located in the middle of Fredericton. It has many trails that run through the forest and some of the trees there are believed to be over 400 years old. This is a history documentary for the War of 1812. In June 1812, the young United Stated declared war on the greatest power in the world, Great Britain. For two and a half years Americans fought against the British, Canadian columnists and native nations in a small but bitter war. This is a history documentary for the War of 1812.Yet in the US today very little of the war of 1812 lives on in the public mind. It is the war that Americans have largely forgotten. The War of 1812 is "the war we don't know too much about" in America. Although the war of 1812 is small by every standards compare to any other war, it forges the destiny of the continent for 200 years to come. Although the war of 1812 is largely forgotten by US and Britain, where the conflict on the North American continent was a sideshow, two other of the involved groups have not forgotten it. The Canadians and the Indians (Tecumseh was their leader), the people of the native tribes.
The War of 1812 resolved many issues which remained from the American Revolutionary War but involved no boundary changes. The United States declared war on June 18, 1812 for several reasons, including trade restrictions brought about by the British war with France, the impressment of American merchant sailors into the Royal Navy, British support of Indian tribes against American expansion, outrage over insults to national honor after humiliations on the high seas, and possible American interest in annexing British territory in modern-day Canada.
The British, in the beginning, used a defensive strategy in the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, repelling initial American invasions. This demonstrated that the conquest of Canada would prove more difficult than anticipated. After a series of war battles on sea and land and a number of victories and defeats on both sides, American victories in September 1814 repulsed the British invasions of New York, which along with pressure from merchants on the British government prompted British diplomats to drop their demands at Ghent for an independent native buffer state and territorial claims that London previously sought. Both sides agreed to a peace that restored the situation before the war began. However, it took six weeks for ships to cross the Atlantic so news of the peace treaty did not arrive before the British suffered a major defeat at New Orleans in January 1815.
In the United States, late victories over invading British armies at Plattsburg, Baltimore (inspiring their national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner") and New Orleans produced a sense of euphoria over a "second war of independence" against Britain.
In Canada, victories over invading American armies became iconic and promoted the development of a distinct Canadian identity, which included strong loyalty to Britain. In Canada, numerous ceremonies took place in 2012 to commemorate the war, offer historical lessons and celebrate 200 years of peace across the border. Many of Canada’s national heroes (like Lara Secord) have evolved from this war.

On gold, Dent says, “We’ve been predicting gold will go down for many years now, and the next target is $700 per ounce. I think we will see that in the next two years at a minimum.”
