The world's busiest port is contested by several ports around the world, as there is as yet no standardised means of evaluating port performance and traffic. For the past decade, the distinction has been claimed by both the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Singapore. The former based its measurement on cargo tonnage handled (total weight of goods loaded and discharged), while the latter ranked in terms of shipping tonnage handled (total volume of ships handled). Since 2005, the Port of Shanghai has exceeded both ports to take the title in terms of total cargo tonnage.
Lists of world's busiest:
The following ports have variously made claims (or had claims made for them):

The Transnet National Ports Authority has projected a market demand strategy (MDS) for volumes of containers expected to use the port in the coming years. Projections show the port does not have the capacity to meet future growth. Transnet has invested in equipment tobring about efficiency, but the port itself is constrained by its Z-shape.
Transnet's plans to dredge the port to a depth of 18m and to fill in the areas between Salisbury Island and Peer 1, and fill in the Z between Peer 1 and 2.

aerial images for the disaster explosion in Tianjin port 中国における災害の爆発のための空間像
The explosion in eastern China that rocked one of the world’s busiest ports still poses some logistics problems despite resuming operations, as some executives and analysts report hurdles to getting goods and commodities where they are needed.
Authorities and companies near the blast site in the eastern Chinese city of Tianjin said operations there were returning to normal. Still, some executives said bottlenecks remained for industries from steel production to oil refining.
“The whole area near the Tianjin port has been blocked because of the blast,” said Rahul Goel, head of projects planning at General Nice Group, a commodities trader with operations in Tianjin. “There is no transportation. The seaborne material can still come into port, but it cannot go out.”
The big question now is how long the transport challenges drag on in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s explosion, which killed at least 56 and hospitalized some 700 others.
“There are a lot of steel mills in the area that are unable to get their supply of iron ore,” said Mr. Goel.
Authorities blocked one company’s access to 16,000 tons of iron ore stored near the explosion, while it diverted another 170,000 tons set to arrive in Tianjin on Saturday to the port of Rizhao just south of the city, said one Singapore-based trader at the company. But the trader said the company was confident it could get shipments to customers. In an apparent reference to China’s slowing trade sector, the trader said, “Have you seen the ports in China? They’re huge, and perhaps there is now some use of all this capacity.”
Other companies that depend on the port at Tianjin were more upbeat. Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd. said Friday it didn’t anticipate any direct impact on its shipments through the port. It said iron-ore berths at the port were operating, and that customs clearance there had resumed.
Chevron Corp. said it had resumed operations at a lubricant facility located about 5 kilometers from the accident site, which it had suspended following the blast. A Chevron spokesman said the facility sustained minor roof damage. Technology firms with manufacturing operations in Tianjin, including Lenovo Group Ltd., said business had been unaffected.
About 40% of imported cars sold in China come through Tianjin, said Wang Cun, an analyst at China Automobile Trading Co. But inventories are high—enough to last 2½ months according to official auto data—because China’s auto market is softening. Some car makers affected by the explosions, such as Volkswagen AG, said they would ensure timely deliveries via the southern ports of Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Tianjin’s maritime authority said in an online post Friday that besides oil tankers and ships carrying what it termed hazardous materials, the port was operating normally. Berth operators reached by phone said the flow of goods had resumed. The port operator, Tianjin Port (Group) Co., referred questions to government officials.
The accident came as China prepares for major celebrations in Beijing to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II next month. Security is already running high in the regions around the capital, and nervy officials may further tighten or restrict the flow of goods to avoid a repeat accident, analysts said.

STORYLINE
Hong Kong dockworkers have accepted a 9.8 percent pay increase, ending a 40-day strike that slowed traffic at one of the world's busiest ports.
The workers settled their dispute late on Monday by agreeing to the pay offer from four middleman contractors that provide staff to a container terminal operator controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.
The strike was the longest in years in the former British colony, now a semi-autonomous Chinese city that retains a reputation as a stronghold of laissez-faire capitalism.
It raised questions about the competitiveness of the city's port amid intensifying competition from regional rivals.
About 450 workers went on strike March 28. They originally demanded a raise of up to 23 percent to make up for pay cuts in previous years. They later said they would settle for a double-digit percentage increase.
Lawmaker and union leader Lee Cheuk-yan said the offer was a face-saving compromise but members are happy because the increase is for all workers, not just those who went on strike. The offer also includes improvements to working conditions, he added.
But he added that workers would not stop camping out at Li's tower until 100 crane operators who lost their jobs after contractor Global Stevedoring Service Company went bust during the strike, are offered work by the other contractors taking up the slack.
"The fight is not over. We need to reinstate them, or to get them reemployed inside the terminal, and this is something that we have to negotiate in the future," he said on Monday.
The striking dockers had complained about health and safety problems like a lack of bathroom breaks and long shifts. They expressed their anger by camping out in front of the Cheung Kong building, a skyscraper in Hong Kong's financial district owned by Li, Asia's richest person.
Li's port operator business, Hutchison Port Holdings, said it can now "focus on restoring the port to its full operational capabilities."
The strike delayed cargo being moved on and off ships at the terminal, resulting in a backlog of 80-thousand-90-thousand containers at the port during the strike, according to the Hong Kong Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics.
Hutchison said last month that it was operating at 80-90 percent of capacity and that 100 ships had reportedly skipped the port because of delays.
Hong Kong is a major transhipment hub for goods moving in and out of mainland China.

Real-time video monitoring at the Port of Shanghai
Durban’s harbour is the busiest port in Africa and is also the continent’s biggest in terms of volume throughput.
The expansion of the existing port will still not meet the projected demand. Transnet's greater plan is to dig out the old Durban air port into a container and car terminal.

Since the mid 1990s ports show a process of traffic concentration among largest port gateways. Hinterland access, the configuration of shipping line networks and supply chain management are the most significant factors driving the process at ports. The Worlds Busiest Canal Mega Structure The Panama Canal Full Documentary
History
The history of the Panama Canal goes back to 16th century. After realizing the riches of Peru, Ecuador, and Asia, and counting the time it took the gold to reach the ports of Spain, it was suggested c.1524 to Charles V, that by cutting out a piece of land somewhere in Panama, the trips would be made shorter and the risk of taking the treasures through the isthmus would justify such an enterprise. A survey of the isthmus was ordered and subsequently a working plan for a canal was drawn up in 1529. The wars in Europe and the thirsts for the control of kingdoms in the Mediterranean Sea simply put the project on permanent hold.
In 1534 a Spanish official suggested a canal route close to that of the now present canal. Later, several other plans for a canal were suggested, but no action was taken. The Spanish government subsequently abandoned its interest in the canal.
In the early 19th century the books of the German scientist Alexander von Humboldt revived interest in the project, and in 1819 the Spanish government formally authorized the construction of a canal and the creation of a company to build it. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 and the rush of would-be miners stimulated Americas interest in digging the canal
Various surveys were made between 1850 and 1875 showed that only two routes were practical, the one across Panama and another across Nicaragua. In 1876 an international company was organized; two years later it obtained a concession from the Colombian government to dig a canal across the isthmus. The international company failed, and in 1880 a French company was organized by Ferdinand Marie de Lesseps, the builder of the Suez Canal.
In 1879, de Lesseps proposed a sea level canal through Panama. With the success he had with the construction of the Suez Canal in Egypt just ten years earlier, de Lesseps was confident he would complete the water circle around the world.
Time and mileage would be dramatically reduced when travelling from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean or vice versa. For example, it would save a total of 18,000 miles on a trip from New York to San Francisco.
Although de Lesseps was not an engineer, he was appointed chairman for the construction of the Panama Canal. Upon taking charge, he organized an International Congress to discuss several schemes for constructing a ship canal. De Lesseps opted for a sea-level canal based on the construction of the Suez Canal. He believed that if a sea-level canal worked when constructing the Suez Canal, it must work for the Panama Canal.
In 1899 the US Congress created an Isthmian Canal Commission to examine the possibilities of a Central American canal and to recommend a route. The commission first decided on a route through Nicaragua, but later reversed its decision. The Lesseps company offered its assets to the United States at a price of $40 million. The United States and the new state of Panama signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla treaty, by which the United States guaranteed the independence of Panama and secured a perpetual lease on a 10-mile strip for the canal. Panama was to be compensated by an initial payment of $10 million and an annuity of $250,000, beginning in 1913. This strip is now known as the Canal Zone.
The length of the Panama Canal is approximately 51 miles. A trip along the canal from its Atlantic entrance would take you through a 7 mile dredged channel in Limón Bay. The canal then proceeds for a distance of 11.5 miles to the Gatun Locks. This series of three locks raise ships 26 metres to Gatun Lake. It continues south through a channel in Gatun Lake for 32 miles to Gamboa, where the Culebra Cut begins. This channel through the cut is 8 miles long and 150 metres wide. At the end of this cut are the locks at Pedro Miguel. The Pedro Miguel locks lower ships 9.4 metres to a lake which then takes you to the Miraflores Locks which lower ships 16 metres to sea level at the canals Pacific terminus in the bay of Panama. A pictorial view of the canals route can be seen below.
Plan of Panama Canal
The United States and the new state of Panama signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla treaty, by which the United States guaranteed the independence of Panama and secured a perpetual lease on a 10-mile strip for the canal. world's biggest cargo carrier - Monster on the high Sea
"It doesn't look so different when you look out from the front of the bridge," says captain Giuseppe Silviero. "But when you look out the back, you realise it's about 200m longer than some of the other ships."
As a chilly wind blows from the North Sea, the Oscar pulls slowly into port. Tugs, one spraying jets of water into the air in traditional maritime celebration, heave it sideways into berths eight and nine at Felixstowe.
Able to hold 19,224 standard 20ft-long containers, the Oscar is the world's biggest carrier ship, in terms of volume. Built by Daewoo in South Korea at a cost of $140m (£93m) and named after the eight-year-old son of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) president and chief executive Diego Aponte, she is 395.4m (1,297ft) long - a few metres greater than the height of New York's Empire State building, if the antenna on top is not taken into account.
Measuring 73m (240ft) high and 59m (194ft) wide, the Oscar's silhouette is visible from miles away, even on a misty East Anglian morning.
But Silviero, an Italian who has captained merchant ships for 23 years, is unfazed by being in charge of it. "I've been doing this job throughout what you might call the era of the mega-ships," he says. "I've captained ships that take 11,000, 12,000 and 14,000 containers." A ship of whatever size is still a ship, he reasons.
The Oscar has a different effect on the several hundred enthusiasts gathered near Felixstowe port's entrance to cheer and photograph its arrival, following its maiden voyage from Qingdao in China.
The shipping industry has undergone what some call an "arms race" in the last couple of decades. The Oscar's predecessor as the biggest vessel was the 19,100-container-capacity, Chinese-owned Globe, which held the title for 53 days and visited Felixstowe in January. Thirty years ago, no ship was capable of carrying more than 5,000 containers.
It takes the crew and port staff about half an hour to tether the Oscar, which must be manoeuvred slowly into its berth in case it crashes into the side, its gross tonnage of 193,000 capable of huge damage.
"It's quite a sight," says Clemence Cheng, chief executive of HPUK, owner of Felixstowe, which handled the equivalent of more than four million standard containers for the first time last year. "We've invested so that we can take ships of this size here."
Even the biggest are dealt with within 36 hours, the movements of every container, lorry and train planned with maximum accuracy. Once the Oscar is in situ, a line of six cranes gets into action within 20 minutes.
Felixstowe, along with other major European and Asian ports, has been upgraded in recent years to deal with the volume of cargo the mega-ships bring. US ports have not done the same, meaning the Oscar cannot dock there, while the Panama Canal would have to be widened to allow her through.
Each crane at Felixstowe removes containers, putting them onto waiting shuttle vehicles at a rate of more than one every two minutes. If the traditional image of a busy port is of hustle and bustle, Felixstowe is notably human-free, the dockside largely empty as the cranes do their work. A few workers in yellow hats and high-visibility jackets look tiny next to the Oscar, the letters MSC painted in white letters more than 20m high on its black and red hull.
The crane mechanisms whirr as their yellow "spreaders" carry the containers at speed from the top of the piles onboard downwards. There is a bang as they clamp on and another as they deposit them.
The steps used by the crew to climb on board the Oscar seem comparatively rickety, but with a safety net below.
Further up, in the bridge, Captain Silviero monitors banks of instruments. On one side the town of Felixstowe is visible, its spires juxtaposed behind thousands of containers, mainly red, grey and blue, stacked in the near distance. On the other can be seen the port of Harwich.
The Oscar's quarters, which can accommodate up to 35 people but are home to only 24 on this voyage, are built into a narrow white section midway along the ship. They smell of fresh paint.
Does it get a bit too cosy spending several months in close proximity with other men [it's all-male crew]? What can they do to relieve the boredom?
"We have a competition," says one crew member. "We have to run up and down the stairs as fast as possible." As the accommodation/bridge section has 160-odd steps, it's a quick way to get fit, but not the only one.

The North American Seaboard has been transformed by the joint forces of globalization, regionalization and containerization. Since the mid 1990s ports show a process of traffic concentration among largest port gateways. Hinterland access, the configuration of shipping line networks and supply chain management are the most significant factors driving the process at ports. Port competition is not determined by a single factor, but by several: port infrastructure, liner service (frequency of services), the availability of distribution centers and the market size that can be reached within 24 hours. Participants in this session will learn trends in ports, the forecasted growth in ports and have the question answered if the forecasted growth can be handled through American ports. In addition we will review the demand for further investments in ports and discuss the effect of the Panama Canal expansion on world trade routes.

"We are also not going to retreat from our camp-out, of Cheung Kong, and our camp-out of the terminal because there are one hundred plus of the crane operators not yet reengaged by the subcontractor inside, so the fight is not over. We need to reinstate them, or to get them reemployed inside the terminal, and this is something that we have to negotiate in the future."

Durban’s harbour is the busiest port in Africa and is also the continent’s biggest in terms of volume throughput.
The expansion of the existing port will still not meet the projected demand. Transnet's greater plan is to dig out the old Durban air port into a container and car terminal.
