Since the transfer of administration from United States to Japan in 1971, ownership of the islands by Japan has been disputed by the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Chinese claim the discovery and control of the islands from the 14th century. Japan controlled the islands from 1895 until her surrender at the end of World War II. The United States administered them as part of the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands from 1945 until 1972, when the islands reverted to Japanese control under the Okinawa Reversion Treaty between the United States and Japan.
The Syrian uprising is an ongoing, violent internal conflict in Syria. It is part of the wider Arab Spring, a wave of upheaval throughout the Arab world. Public demonstrations across Syria began on 26 January 2011 and developed into a nationwide uprising. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, the overthrow of his government, and an end to nearly five decades of Ba’ath Party rule.
Since spring 2011, the Syrian government has deployed the Syrian Army to quell the uprising. Several cities have been besieged, but nevertheless the unrest continues. According to witnesses, soldiers who refused to open fire on civilians were summarily executed by the Syrian Army. The Syrian government denied reports of defections, and blamed "armed gangs" for causing trouble. Since early autumn 2011, civilians and army defectors began forming fighting units, which began an insurgency campaign against the Syrian Army. The insurgents unified under the banner of the Free Syrian Army and fought in an increasingly organized fashion; however, the civilian component of the armed opposition lacks an organized leadership.

On Wednesday, Japanese media reported that the landowners and the government have agreed on a price of $26 million.

China’s new base is aimed at strengthening surveillance over its self-proclaimed air defense identification zone, which covers a portion of what Japan considers its own territory in the East China Sea, and enhance China’s ability to respond militarily to threats in the region.
The islands are close to the Japanese island of Okinawa, which territory is for 3/4 covered by U.S. bases.
According to Li Jie, a senior researcher from the Chinese Naval research Institute, “It’s unarguable that China would like to enhance the existing military presence there.”
Japan is also building a surveillance center on Yonaguni Island to monitor activity around the Senkakus, which are administered by Tokyo but claimed by China and Taiwan.

There's been a lot of news recently about protesting in China against the Japanese government purchasing some islands. So what's the big deal?! This video explains the situation.
Also, some people seem concerned that this may lead to war, but I can confidently say that won't happen. These islands have been disputed for roughly 40 years--this is not a recent issue. This is just a way for Chinese citizens to blow off some steam and the Chinese government to save face in front of its citizens. The issue will die down, like it always does. Until there is a shift in the dynamics of East Asia both governments are going to keep this dispute at a stalemate. Comments disabled because for months all the new ones were, "Chinese people are subhuman, kill them all" and "Japanese people are subhuman, should have dropped more nukes." Take a chill pill and learn how to love your fellow man. We're all human.
No one would gain anything from war, and that is absolutely the last thing either country wants to happen.

A mostly uninhabited island group, known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and Diaoyu in China, is at the center of a deal between the Japanese family who owns it and the Japanese central government.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura confirmed negotiations at a press conference saying, "We are exchanging views with the landowners in various ways, but that process is ongoing."
On Wednesday, Japanese media reported that the landowners and the government have agreed on a price of $26 million.
The Chinese regime does not recognize the Japanese family's ownership of the islands and claims that the islands are part of its territory. In response to media reports, China's Foreign Ministry says it will take action to protect its territory.
[Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman]:
"China's will and determination to protest its territorial sovereignty is unswerving. China is following developments closely, and will take necessary measures to protect its national territorial sovereignty."
The group of five islands and rocky outcrops lies more than 1,200 miles from Tokyo but only 124 miles from Taiwan. According to a treaty made with the United States after Japan's defeat in World War 2, the islands reverted back to Japanese control in 1972.
In August, a group of protesters from China and Taiwan landed on one of the islands and were arrested by Japanese authorities. The next week, Japanese protesters did the same, sparking a wave of violent, anti-Japanese protests throughout China.

Media Narratives and the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands Dispute
Most Americans have never heard of these small uninhabited islands, but after World War II the U.S. used them for bombing practice. Japan has administered them since 1972, but the Chinese and Japanese governments both consider them inseparable parts of their nations. The U.S. says that it takes no position on which nation the islands belong to, but says that resolution of the dispute must be done through peaceful means.
Long a point of contention between the two countries, the issue heated up and garnered global attention in 2012 when China protested the Japanese government’s nationalization of the islands. Large protests broke out, sometimes including violence, organizations were mobilized, and there were confrontations at sea. China established a new air defense identification zone including the islands. Depictions of the islands and the dispute in traditional and new media in China, Japan, and the U.S. have done much to shape public opinion and to influence how political leaders discuss the issue. A newly published book, The Dispute Over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands: How Media Narratives Shape Public Opinion and Challenge the Global Order (Palgrave Macmillan) details this. Three contributors to the volume will join us to share their research and to discuss responses to their work.
Tom Hollihan is professor of communication at USC Annenberg and chairs the USCI executive committee. He edited the book and wrote the introduction and a chapter on the depiction of the dispute in the U.S. media. Zhan Zhang 张展 is a researcher and project coordinator at China Media Observatory at the Università della Svizzera italiana. She contributed a chapter on how Chinese traditional media discuss the issue. Patricia Riley is associate professor of communication and directs the Global Communication masters degree program at USC Annenberg. She looks at what the controversy shows about the conduct of public diplomacy in a new global media environment. Hollihan and Riley recently completed a book tour through Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo and will also discuss responses to their arguments.

5 Reasons Why the Senkaku Islands are not Chinese Territory
1. International Law
"Island of Palmas Case" (1928), one of the most highly influential precedents dealing with island territorial conflicts say as follows,
1) Firstly, title based on contiguity has no standing in international law.
2) Secondly, title by discovery is only an inchoate title.
3) Finally, if another sovereign begins to exercise continuous and actual sovereignty, (and the arbitrator required that the claim had to be open and public and with good title), and the discoverer does not contest this claim, the claim by the sovereign that exercises authority is greater than a title based on mere discovery.
The Senkaku Islands were incorporated into Japan in 1895 by "prior occupation of terra nullius," but both PRC (People's Republic of China) and ROC (Republic of China) had never protested against Japan's claim over the Senkaku Islands until 1971 for 76 years. Instead they had recognized the Islands as Japanese territory explicitly in their documents, newspapers, textbooks and maps. International law gives them the qualification to claim the Islands any longer.
2. The Senkaku islands were discovered first not by Chinese but by Ryukyuans (Okinawan people).
It was only 23 times that Chinese investiture Missions sailed to the Ryukyu Kingdom (Okinawa) in 507 years, while Ryukyuan Tributary Missions sailed to China over 580 times in the same period via the Senkaku Islands.
3. There is no historical fact that China has exercised any "effective control" on the Senkaku Islands.
China has claimed that the Senkaku islands had been Chinese territory "since the Ming Dynasty." However, during the Ming Dynasty, even Taiwan was not a part of China. Taiwan was incorporated into Qing in 1683 for the first time. And all Chinese official documents written during the Qing Dynasty regarding Taiwan say the north end of Taiwan was the present Hoping island never Keelung. There is no historical fact that the Senkaku Islands were incorporated into China ever.
4. The Japanese old map China quote often never admitted that the Senkaku islands were Chinese territory.
China often quotes the Japanese old map, 「琉球三省並三十六島之図」(1786) by 林子平(Hayashi Shinei) to argue that the Senkaku Islands were colored in the same color as mainland China, so Japanese at that time recognized that the Senkaku islands were Chinese territory. However, in the same map, Taiwan was colored with the different color from the mainland China despite the fact that Taiwan was already incorporated in to Qing when the map was published in Japan. And Hayashi Shihei was not a Japanese governmental official, but a mere private citizen who was even arrested and punished by the Tokugawa Shogunate. We can not think Japan's official view was reflected in his map anyway.
5. There is no historical fact that Senkaku Islands had ever belonged to China, so China cannot say that they were stolen from China. So the Cairo Declaration has nothing to do with the Senkaku Islands.
Conclusion.
China has invaded and absorbed Tibet, East Turkestan, Inner Mongolia, and Manchuria. China is going to swallow the Senkaku Islands, Okinawa and Taiwan this time. The reestablishment of full-fledged Chinese Empire is their ultimate objective.

China's Diaoyu-Senkaku Islands Air Defense Fun Zone! | China Uncensored
As if tensions between China and Japan over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands weren't high enough, China has decided to establish an air defense identification zone over a huge chunk of the East China Sea, including, you guessed it, the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands. Now nationalistic fervor is out of control and neither side is willing to back down. If push comes to shove, the US military has vowed to back Japan. But will things escalate to outright war? Let's hope not because they're just UNINHABITED ISLANDS!!!

China disputed islands: New Chinese military base being built near Japanese-controlled Senkakus
China is building a large military base on islands it controls near the disputed Senkaku Islands.
The base is being constructed in the Nanji Islands off the coast of China’s Zhejiang Province, about 300 kilometers (190 miles) northwest of the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands, which China claims and calls the Diaoyu.
Several large radar installations have already been built at high points on the main Nanji Island.
Landings strips have been paved, most likely for aircraft operating from warships or patrol vessels, Kyodo reported.
More landing strips are scheduled to be built on an island near the main island in 2015.

Comments disabled because for months all the new ones were, "Chinese people are subhuman, kill them all" and "Japanese people are subhuman, should have dropped more nukes." Take a chill pill and learn how to love your fellow man. We're all human.
No one would gain anything from war, and that is absolutely the last thing either country wants to happen.

Japan and China's Battle For Senkaku Islands
Japan and China's Battle For Senkaku Islands
