Many in the United States have a very specific picture of Russian culture, developed through the lens of the Cold War. While some Russian stereotypes have some truth to them, in the end they are people just like the rest of us. What is surprising is that many things we consider to be icons of American culture, were actually never really American to begin with. Some of the most deeply American things owe their inspiration in part or in whole to the Russians.

10 Countries With The Most Beautiful People https://youtu.be/rUaFPesQfZk
Description:
Russia is an impressive land with an impressive history. The largest country on the planet, its lands cross several time zones and stretch from Europe all the way to the edge of North America. Across its vast expanse can be found mountains, deserts, arctic tundra, vast forests, marshlands and massive plains. Its population is large, and at around 145 million is made up of numerous cultures and religions. While Russian is the primary language of the people, there are around 100 other languages spoken in a country which is home to over 150 ethnicities.
Historically, Russia has experienced a rather turbulent, if impressive past. Growing to become one of the largest empires in the world, the First World War led to the collapse of country as revolution swept through. Several decades as part of the Soviet Union saw Russia maintain a powerful standing in the world, but that too eventually crumbled. In the 1990s, terrible financial problems and political instability saw Russia’s standing in the world drop markedly. The past decade has seen the country stabilize somewhat under the watch of Vladimir Putin. Under Putin, the country has followed a conservative line, emphasizing traditional values and following policies reminiscent of the Soviet-era.
This ‘new’ Russia definitely has the look of the ‘old’ Soviet Union to anyone on the outside. Military buildups, resumption of nuclear bomber flights, aggressive and expansionist foreign policies and the resumption of strong anti-Western sentiments all mark today’s Russia under Putin. In a way, Russian leadership has taken the directionless ship that was Russia in the 1990s and steered it on a new and clear course. This has led to the resumption of butting heads with Western nations, something which was so common over 20 years ago.
While the evening news seems to always have a story or two about what Russia is doing next in the world, it’s what’s happening inside the country that often goes unnoticed. Here, government laws and decrees can seem harsh and short-sighted. Nonetheless, in an effort to impose order and help shape Russia in the best way they see possible, government officials slap a number of bans on various activities and goods – for the good of the people. On the outside looking in, these can look like the act of a dictator but a stream of polls constantly show the Russian people are in support of the government and the direction it is taking the country.

In Lviv, western Ukraine, a group of displaced Crimean Tatars have started the process of developing modern Crimean Tatar culture outside of the occupied peninsula. A music producer from Simferopol, Halil Halilov, has started up a music production studio for Crimean Tatar artists, artists using Crimean Tatar themes and developing young Crimean Tatar musical talent.
"I came to realize that cultural development was being affected," said Halil.
"My responsibility... I feel my share of responsibility in being able to develop the culture outside of Crimea"
Halil has also been active in schools, where new Crimean Tatar artists can develop their talents and contribute to the growing Tatar musical culture.
"What I might do on the grounds of this Jazz School is to modernize the Crimean Tatar music," Halil said while giving a tour of the music school studio.
As at the 23 March 2015 the UN estimated that there are 1,178,000 IDPs in Ukraine. For several months a team of Hromadske journalists traveled around Ukraine, from Sloviansk to Lviv, in search of stories of those who were left without their homes because of the war and the annexation. This the third story of part 2 in the Displaced series, a project about the lives of internally displaced persons in Ukraine from the Donbas region and Crimea.

Russian culture is the culture associated with the country of Russia and, sometimes, specifically with Russians. It has a long history and can claim a long tradition of dividend in many aspects of the arts,[1] especially when it comes to literature[2] and philosophy, classical music[3][4] and ballet,[5] architecture and painting, cinema[6] and animation, which all had considerable influence on world culture. The country also has a flavorful material culture and a tradition in technology.
Russian culture grew from that of the East Slavs, with their pagan beliefs and specific way of life in the wooded areas of Eastern Europe. Early Russian culture was much influenced by neighbouring Finno-Ugric tribes and by nomadic, mainly Iranian and Turkic, peoples of the Pontic steppe. In the late 1st millennium AD the Scandinavian Vikings, or Varangians, also took part in the forming of Russian identity and Kievan Rus' state. Kievan Rus' had accepted Orthodox Christianity from the Eastern Roman Empire in 988, and this largely defined the Russian culture of the next millennium as the synthesis of Slavic and Byzantine cultures.[7] After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Russia remained the largest Orthodox nation in the world and claimed succession to the Byzantine legacy in the form of the Third Rome idea. At different points in its history, the country was also strongly influenced by the culture of Western Europe. Since Peter the Great's reforms for two centuries Russian culture largely developed in the general context of European culture rather than pursuing its own unique ways. The situation changed in the 20th century, when the Communist ideology became a major factor in the culture of the Soviet Union, where Russia, or Russian SFSR, was the largest and leading part.
Nowadays, Russian cultural heritage is ranked seventh in the Nation Brands Index, based on interviews of some 20,000 people mainly from Western countries and the Far East. Due to the relatively late involvement of Russia in modern globalization and international tourism, many aspects of Russian culture, like Russian jokes and Russian art, remain largely unknown to foreigners.
At the start of the 18th century the reforms of Peter the Great (the founder of Russian Academy of Sciences and Saint Petersburg State University) and the work of such champions as polymath Mikhail Lomonosov (the founder of Moscow State University) gave a great boost for development of science and innovation in Russia. In the 19th and 20th centuries Russia produced a large number of great scientists and inventors.
Nikolai Lobachevsky, a Copernicus of Geometry, developed the non-Euclidean geometry. Dmitry Mendeleev invented the Periodic table, the main framework of the modern chemistry. Nikolay Benardos introduced the arc welding, further developed by Nikolay Slavyanov, Konstantin Khrenov and other Russian engineers. Gleb Kotelnikov invented the knapsack parachute, while Evgeniy Chertovsky introduced the pressure suit. Pavel Yablochkov and Alexander Lodygin were great pioneers of electrical engineering and inventors of early electric lamps.
Alexander Popov was among the inventors of radio, while Nikolai Basov and Alexander Prokhorov were co-inventors of lasers and masers. Igor Tamm, Andrei Sakharov and Lev Artsimovich developed the idea of tokamak for controlled nuclear fusion and created its first prototype, which finally led to the modern ITER project. Many famous Russian scientists and inventors were émigrés, like Igor Sikorsky and Vladimir Zworykin, and many foreign ones worked in Russia for a long time, like Leonard Euler and Alfred Nobel.
Other technologies, where Russia historically leads, include nuclear technology, aircraft production and arms industry. The creation of the first nuclear power plant along with the first nuclear reactors for submarines and surface ships was directed by Igor Kurchatov. NS Lenin was the world's first nuclear-powered surface ship as well as the first nuclear-powered civilian vessel, and NS Arktika became the first surface ship to reach the North Pole.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the Presidential Council for Culture and Art members to sum up the Year of Literature in 2015 and consider proposals on Year of Russian Cinema in 2016 in Moscow, Friday. Many famous Russian cultural professionals and high-ranking participated in the meeting.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "I would like to greet you all. The year 2015 was marked by the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. As you know, the creation of the United Nations and UNESCO are closely connected with this anniversary. These organisations have become the most important key players in the post-world war period, in formation of the principals of solidarity and humanism and international law with the special emphasis on humanitarian and cultural elements in development of the countries. These anniversaries have been reflected in many spheres of our country including the Year of Literature."
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "The upcoming year of 2016 is declared in Russia to be the Year of Russian Cinema. We need to do everything in order to make it bright, useful for millions of our people. In particular, the cinema chain should be developed in the Russian regions, especially in small cities. And of course, our movies should be filmed and we need to aspire for that."

On October 30, 2015, the NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia hosted the launch of the English-language edition of Vasily Kamensky’s “Tango with Cows,” curated by Eugene Ostashevsky and Daniel Mellis.
Tango with Cows, a book of Russian Futurist visual poetry, was published in the spring of 1914, at roughly the same time as the Zang Tumb Tumb of F.T. Marinetti and the first calligrammes of Guillaume Apollinaire. The Petersburg avant-garde writer Kamensky became the first European poet to train as an airplane pilot until crashing his Blériot XI during a show flight returned him to literature. As third partner of the Russian Futurist tour of 1913-1914 with Vladimir Mayakovsky and David Burliuk, Kamensky eagerly innovated in the fields of book art and visual poetry, printing his typographical experiments on brashly colored wallpaper. Composed at the height of the Russian tango craze, Tango with Cows provides us pictures of Moscow’s nightlife circa January 1914—the movies, the circus, the skating rinks, the modernist art gallery, the after-hours clubs, and, last but not least, the public baths—as it reminisces about the author’s flying over Warsaw and sailing to Constantinople. Ostashevsky and Mellis’s typographic translations of Kamensky, winners of the PEN/Heim Translation Fund grant, are being issued to celebrate the hundredth—or rather the hundred-and-first-and-a-halfth–anniversary of the original Russian publication.

Travel video about destination Russia.
Russia is a country full of adventure, culture and vast distances. A continent, a multi-ethnic country and a vast land unites both Europe and Asia. Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in Europe in which both Tsar rule and soviet communism gave the city its present appearance. The Kremlin is located on a forty metre high hill above the Moskva River and beyond its protective walls are numerous buildings, palaces, towers, squares and churches. The city’s history began with the construction of the Kremlin which lay at the very heart of the city and was for centuries Russia’s spiritual and political centre. A fascinating cruise travels across numerous rivers, canals and lakes within the heart of the former Tsar’s realm, past monasteries and timber built churches. In Uglič the Dimitrijvskaija Church is crowned with blue, onion-shaped domes that are adorned with stars. The red colour of the church is a symbol of bloodshed and the incidents that once occurred at this place of death gave rise to a time of confusion. St. Petersburg, known also as the Venice Of The North, contains splendid buildings such as the Winter Palace and the Eremitage. Twenty four thousand tree stumps were used for the foundation of Isaaks Cathedral that can accommodate a congregation of fourteen thousand. In Port Baikal is the modern Circum-Baikal train that takes a full day to travel around Lake Baikal and is one of the most difficult sections of the Trans-Siberian Railroad that travels from Moscow to as far as Vladivostok. Russia is huge and its nature, culture, immense contrast and dramatic history have formed the fascinating and colourful Russian soul.
