I decided to focus on Indo-European languages for this one. Featuring (in chronological order): Old Church Slavonic, Old Irish, Gothic, Classical Latin, Ancient (Attic) Greek, Avestan, and the (hypothetical, but very probable) common ancestor of all these ancient languages, Proto-Indo-European. Info on the languages: Old Church Slavonic (or Slověnĭskŭ Językŭ, its endonym) was the first Slavic literary language, used from the ninth to eleventh century before splitting into the Church Slavonic languages. It is the oldest attested Slavic languages. Old Irish (or Goídelc), used from the fifth to ninth centuries, was an early celtic language. It had particularly complex grammar and phonological systems, and is the ancestor of Modern Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Manx. Gothic, an early East Germanic language, was used from the fourth to eighth centuries. It is the best attested East Germanic language and is important to the reconstruction of Proto-Germanic and PIE. Classical Latin was the standard language of the Roman Empire from 75 B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., as opposed to Vulgar Latin, the "speech of the masses." Vulgar Latin was the ancestor of the Romance languages. Attic Greek is a dialect of Ancient Greek used from 750 B.C. to the 3rd century B.C., when it was replaced by Koine (Common) Greek. Avestan was an Iranian language spoken from the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age, and is the earliest attested Indo-Iranian language. It is closely related to Vedic Sanskrit, the earliest attested Indo-Iranian language. Proto-Indo-European is the unattested, yet highly supported common ancestor of all Indo-European languages, including Hellenic (including Greek), Italic (including Latin and the Romance languages), Germanic, Celtic, Slavic, and the Indo-Iranian languages. There are about 439 Indo-European languages, with almost three billion native speakers, by far the most of any widely recognized language family. The most accepted hypothesis places it spoken in the Pontic steppe, about six thousand years ago, although estimates vary greatly. In an interview from the early 60's by Janos Darvas I believe, Igor Stravinsky humorously recalls playing The Rite of Spring for Sergei Diaghilev whose company, The Ballet Russes, would be dancing to this groundbreaking, albeit bizarre, score. One doesn't imagine Stravinsky to be humorous but this isn't the only light clip I've seen. All these clips from the same interview are thrown all over the internet with no source or sequence. I have no rights to any of it but I'm reposting it with some commentary. It's historically significant and these hacks are just throwing it around without any documentation. I hate people.

Orpheus is a thirty-minute ballet created by choreographer George Balanchine in collaboration with composer Igor Stravinsky in Hollywood, California in 1947. The work was commissioned by the Ballet Society, which Balanchine founded together with Lincoln Kirstein and of which he was ballet master. Sets and costumes were created by Isamu Noguchi. The original cast consisted of 30 dancers: Orpheus; Eurydice; the Dark Angel of Death; Apollo; the leader of the Furies; the leader of the Bacchantes; eight women Bacchantes; nine women in various roles (Friends to Orpheus, Furies, Pluto, Satyr, and Nature Spirits); and seven men as Lost Souls. The action was divided into three scenes and 12 dance episodes: (Scene One) Orphee; l'Ange de la mort et sa danse; Interlude; (Scene Two) Pas des furies; Air de danse; Interlude; Air de danse conclusion; Pas d'action; (Scene Three) Apostheose d'Orphee. The premiere took place on April 28, 1948, at City Center of Music and Drama, New York, and directly resulted in City Center's chairman, Morton Baum, inviting Balanchine and Kirstein to establish a resident company. The new company was named (or Ballet Society renamed) New York City Ballet and Balanchine remained its ballet master until his death. The program for City Ballet's first performance at City Center, conducted by Igor Stravinsky, consisted of Orpheus, Concerto Barocco and Symphony in C on October 11, 1948; and Noguchi's rendition of Orpheus' lyre was adopted as and remains City Ballet's official symbol.

Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky (sometimes spelled Strawinsky or Stravinskii; Russian: И́горь Фёдорович Страви́нский,17 June [O.S. 5 June] 1882 – 6 April 1971) was a Russian (and later, a naturalized French and American) composer, pianist and conductor. He is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. The instrumental ensemble (four pianos and percussion) was conducted by Ernest Ansermet. Nijinska’s Les noces is considered to have feminist elements. Les noces deserts the upbeat nature of a typical wedding, and instead brings to life the restrictive nature of a woman's duty to marry. The dark and somber set provides the backdrop to the simple costuming and rigid movements. The individuality of the dancer is stripped away in Nijinska's choreography, therefore displaying actors on a predetermined path, as marriage was regarded as the way to maintain and grow the community. The choreography exudes symbolism as, huddled together, the women repeatedly strike the floor with their pointe shoes with rigid intensity, as if to tell the tale of their struggle and ultimate reverence. The Russian peasant culture and the dutifulness it evokes in its people is represented in Nijinska's piece. Stravinsky first conceived of writing the ballet in 1913 and completed it in short score by October 1917. During a long gestation period its orchestration changed dramatically. At first conceived for an expanded symphony orchestra similar to that of The Rite of Spring, it went through numerous variations, including at one point the use of synchronised roll-operated instruments, including the pianola, but he abandoned that version when it was only partially completed, owing to the tardiness of the Parisian piano firm of Pleyel et Cie in constructing the two-keyboard cimbaloms, known subsequently as luthéals. Stravinsky finally settled on the following scoring: soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and bass soloists, mixed chorus, and two groups of percussion instruments – pitched percussion, including four pianos, and unpitched percussion. This orchestration exemplifies Stravinsky's increasing proclivity towards stripped down, clear and mechanistic sound groups in the decade after The Rite, although he would never again produce such an extreme sonic effect solely with percussion. The premiere of the 1919 version of Les noces, with cimbaloms, harmonium, and pianola, took place in 1981 in Paris, conducted by Pierre Boulez. An arrangement for symphony orchestra by Steven Stucky was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and premiered under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen on May 29, 2008 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The arrangement retains Stravinsky's percussion parts while replacing the four pianos with a large orchestra. The unfinished version that included pianola was completed with permission from Stravinsky's heirs by the Dutch composer Theo Verbey and performed in the Netherlands in 2009. Stravinsky wrote the libretto himself using Russian wedding lyrics taken primarily from songs collected by Pyotr Kireevsky and published in 1911. The work is usually performed in Russian or French; English translations are sometimes used, and Stravinsky used one himself in both the 1934 and 1959 recordings he conducted for Columbia records. What is Saints Cyril and Methodius? A documentary report all about Saints Cyril and Methodius for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment. Saints Cyril and Methodius (, Old Church Slavonic: ) were 9th-century Byzantine Greek brothers born in Thessalonica, Macedonia, in the Byzantine Empire. They were the principal Christian missionaries among the Slavic peoples of the Great Moravia and Pannonia, introducing Orthodox Christianity and writing to the hitherto illiterate, pagan Slav migrants into parts of Macedonia and elsewhere in the Balkans. Through their work they influenced the cultural development of all Slavs, for which they received the title "Apostles to the Slavs". They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used to transcribe Old Church Slavonic. After their deaths, their pupils continued their missionary work among other Slavs. Both brothers are venerated in the Orthodox Church as saints with the title of "equal-to-apostles". In 1880, Pope Leo XIII introduced their feast into the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared them co-patron saints of Europe, together with Benedict of Nursia. Based on eyewitness written accounts. In the 17th century, a Bulgarian Christian region is selected by the Ottoman rulers to serve as an example of conversion to Islam. A Janissary who was kidnapped from the village as a boy now serving the Ottoman sultan is sent to force the reluctant inhabitants to convert. The Bulgarian christians have to chose between physical annihilation and losing their spiritual identity. Ultimately torture, violence, and rebellion break out. Based on real events and the novel "Time of Parting" (Vreme Razdelno) by Anton Donchev. The novel is based on two individual eyewitness written accounts - by the priest Aligorko and the Venetian. The resulting text is a translation of the original French and Old Bulgarian (Old Church Slavonic) texts. All names, characters and events appear in the original manuscripts. The year is 1668. The Ottoman Turkish jihad is in its heat in Southeastern Europe.The Turkish siege of the Venetian fortress of Candia (now Heraklion in Crete) has been lasting for a second decade now. The Rhodope Mountain is seen as a strategically important base of the war but its Christian population is a potential source of instability. The sultan orders its conversion into “the right faith”. The sacred forests and valleys, where according to the legend Orpheus was born, now screams under the Yataghans enforcing the foreign creed in blood and fires. A regiment of Spahis commanded by the Janissary Karaibrahim is assigned to the valley of the river Elindenya. When the locals refuse to convert, the violence begins. One by one the villagers are killed. One is impaled and still alive as his body hangs from the pole; another one torn in half; a third one beheaded. When the Christians tell the occupier, Suleyman, that even if he forcefully converts people they can’t carry Allah truthfully in their hearts. Suleyman replies that he doesn’t care if they don’t carry Allah in their hearts – because their grandchildren are the ones who will assimilate into Islam. A corps of janissaries is commissioned to the Rhodope Mountains under the command of Kara Ibrahim. At the time, he was, as all the janissaries were, kidnapped from his Bulgarian family, raised as a Muslim, trained to be a ferocious warrior and convert infidels to Islam in a most brutal way. His cruelty stuns even local Ottoman ruler. He stops at nothing but the resistance of some of the locals is invincible. The struggle is half a success, there are many converts, the death toll is heavy, but all the Bulgarian keep their language and traditions on. Most of the Balkans were under the thumb of the Ottoman empire. Ottoman empire was showing its ugliest face during this period in Balkans. Bulgaria was a strategically important area inhabited by unreliable Christian subjects. The sultan decided that they must all convert to Islam, or die. Time of Violence focuses on the fate of one valley during this crisis. The son of the miller was taken off by the Turks years ago, while still a boy, to become a janissary. Janissaries were special troops used by the Ottomans. Recruited (involuntarily) from Christian boys, they were separated from their families at an early age, indoctrinated in Islam, and turned into fiercely reliable troops with no allegiance to anyone but the sultan. The miller's son is now a highly trusted janissary, with the task of converting his entire home valley to Islam. But the people there take their religion very seriously, and will not submit. The janissary becomes more and more brutal in his attempts to convert the valley, for he must slaughter them all if they don't take the turban. The movie is filmed exactly where the event took place in history and many of the actors are heirs of the original villagers. Time of Violence is a 1988 Bulgarian film based on the novel Vreme razdelno of Anton Donchev and Directed by Ludmil Staikov. “Bulgaria was under Ottoman rule and slavery five centuries. This is a real movie. This is what happened in Bulgaria for five centuries. This is our memory. During The April Uprising in Bulgaria in 1876 between a thousand and twelve hundred people, mostly women and children, took refuge in a church at Batak and were then burnt alive. Five thousand out of the seven thousand villagers of Batak “were put to death”. It was the flag of April Uprising in Bulgaria in 1876 against the Ottoman oppressors – “Freedom or Death”. Uprising was brutally suppressed. During The Russian-Turkish War of 1877-1878 Bulgaria was liberated from five centuries of Ottoman rule and slavery. Thanks to Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians, Belarussians, Finns, Serbs, Montenegrins and all others who participated in the war for liberating Bulgaria.”

Stravinsky's compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity. He first achieved international fame with three ballets commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev and first performed in Paris by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes: The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913). The Rite of Spring, which provoked a riot during its premiere, transformed the way in which subsequent composers thought about rhythmic structure and was largely responsible for Stravinsky's enduring reputation as a musical revolutionary who pushed the boundaries of musical design. His so-called Russian phase was followed in the 1920s by a period in which he turned to neoclassical music. Bach and Tchaikovsky. In the 1950s, Stravinsky adopted serial procedures. His compositions of this period shared traits with examples of his earlier output: rhythmic energy, the construction of extended melodic ideas out of a few two- or three-note cells and clarity of form, of instrumentation and of utterance.
