It's been an odd few days for Greece's new PM Alexis Tsipras..
From being lambasted by Jeroen Dijsselbloem, shunned by Angela Merkel's henchmen, holding hands with Jean-Claude Juncker, and losing a key funding channel from Mario Draghi; Tsipras' anti-austerity platform has been 'supported' by Barack Obama and he has been invited for a visit to Russia by Vladimir Putin, and reminded that Russia is

Turkish Armed Forces (TSK)
According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), in 2010 the Turkish Armed Forces had an active strength of around 510,000 personnel. In addition, it was estimated that there were 378,700 reserve personnel and 152,200 paramilitary personnel (Turkish Gendarmerie and Turkish Coast Guard), giving a combined active and reserve strength of around 1,041,900 personnel. In 2010, the defence budget amounted to 26 billion liras. The Law on the Court of Accounts was supposed to initiate external ex-post audits of armed forces' expenditure and pave the way for audits of extra budgetary resources earmarked for the defence sector, including the Defence Industry Support Fund. However, the Ministry of Defense has not provided the necessary information, so the armed forces expenditure is not being properly checked.
In 1998, Turkey announced a programme of modernisation worth US$160 billion over a twenty-year period in various projects including tanks, fighter jets, helicopters, submarines, warships and assault rifles. Turkey is a Level 3 contributor to the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme. The final goal of Turkey is to produce new-generation indigenous military equipment and to become increasingly self-sufficient in terms of military technologies.
Havelsan of Turkey and Boeing of the United States are in the process of developing a next-generation, high-altitude ballistic missile defence shield. Turkey has chosen the Chinese defense firm CPMIEC to co-produce a $4 billion long-range air and missile system.
Military of Greece
Greece currently has universal compulsory military service for males, under which all men above 18 years of age serve for 9 months. Women may serve in the Greek military, but cannot be conscripted. According to NATO, in 2008, Greece spent 2.8 percent of G.D.P. on its military, or about €6.9 billion, or around $9.3 billion. Greece is the largest importer of conventional weapon in Europe and its military spending is the highest in the European Union (relative to G.D.P).
Greece is an EU and NATO member country and participates in peacekeeping operations such as ISAF in Afghanistan, EUFOR in Bosnia and Chad, and KFOR in Kosovo.

It's been an odd few days for Greece's new PM Alexis Tsipras..
From being lambasted by Jeroen Dijsselbloem, shunned by Angela Merkel's henchmen, holding hands with Jean-Claude Juncker, and losing a key funding channel from Mario Draghi; Tsipras' anti-austerity platform has been 'supported' by Barack Obama and he has been invited for a visit to Russia by Vladimir Putin, and reminded that Russia is willing (and able) to provide financial aid if asked by finance minister Anton Siluanov..
So the headline from Ekathimerini should not be entirely surprising that Putin and Tsipras have agreed to boost cooperation in the economy and energy, tourism, culture and transport sectors; and discussed the possible creation of a pipeline to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe via Turkey and Greece..
As ekathimerini reports,
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday agreed to boost bilateral ties in a telephone conversation during which the latter invited the new Greek premier to an event in Moscow in May to mark the victory over Nazism..
The two men agreed to boost cooperation in the economy and energy, tourism, culture and transport sectors. They also agreed on the need to “secure peace and stability in Ukraine,” according to a statement from Tsipras’s office. Putin expressed satisfaction at Greece’s stance at a recent summit in Brussels where Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias conveyed concerns over the prospect of additional sanctions against Russia over Ukraine..
Sources rebuffed rumors about financial support for Greece from Russia, noting that the government was looking toward its European partners for support. The two men also discussed the possible creation of a pipeline to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe via Turkey and Greece..
Meanwhile Defense Minister Panos Kammenos responded to comments by his German peer Ursula von der Leyen, according to which Greece was jeopardizing its position in NATO with its stance vis-a-vis Russia. Kammenos called her comments “unacceptable and extortionate,” noting “Greece was always on the side of the Allies when they pushed back German occupation troops”..
Meanwhile, "Europe" has an unpleasant habit of dropping tape bombs at the most inopportune of times, like at 3pm or later a Friday. And while on Wednesday it was the ECB yanking repoable Greek collateral for local banks, today it was first S&P;, which downgraded Greece 5 months after upgrading it, and moments ago it was none other than the Cyprus bail-in man himself, the Eurogroup's Dijsselbloem, aka Diesel "Blueprint" BOOM, who just have Greece a 10 day ultimatum to fall into place or risk a terminal bank run and capital controls (both hinted at earlier by the post-DOJ settlement political "rating agency')..
- GREECE MUST APPLY FOR BAILOUT EXTENSION ON FEB 16 AT THE LATEST TO KEEP EURO ZONE FINANCIAL BACKING -EUROGROUP CHAIRMAN DIJSSELBLOEM..
This means that Greece now has 10 days, or until the Monday after next to decide whether it will stay in the Eurozone or Grexit..
Suddenly next week's emergency Eurogroup meeting on Wednesday is looking quite fascinating...

It is these cliffs and the flooded caldera that have become Santorini’s iconic calling card, and the first stop on your Sa

Travel video about destination Greece.
Although Greece is the home of ancient gods, birthplace of European civilisation and a country of great warriors and philosophers it is also a country of many islands with tiny villages and white houses, a deep blue sea and almost constant sunshine.Athens is a lively city set in historic surroundings. Unique among all other Greek temples is the Acropolis whose imposing appearance and artistic decoration signified the great influence and power of ancient Athens. Six female figures, the Karyatides, support the southern hall of the Ionic Temple of Erechtheion that stands on sacred ground close to the main temple. The imposing Mitrópolis is the main Greek Orthodox cathedral in Athens. A total of four architects designed this cathedral whose walls comprise the remains of no less than seventy former sacred buildings. The Cyclades Islands are situated in the middle of the Southern Aegean that like a magic circle flows around its former centre, the sacred island of Delos, Mykonos. For centuries this picturesque former pirate village in the middle of Cyclades group of islands has been the meeting place for artists, V.I.P.’s and the international glitterati. The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands on which a highly developed culture has existed for four thousand years. It’s no wonder that in these magnificent islands in the Aegean numerous gods, knights and tourists have always found much good fortune and enchantment!

What were my top highlights of this city?

Santorini Vacation Travel Guide - Travel Greece 2015
The island of Santorini has a pretty explosive past. It’s perched over the remains of a much larger land mass that sank almost 4,000 years ago when a volcano blew its top, leaving the blue caldera and steep cliffs behind.
It is these cliffs and the flooded caldera that have become Santorini’s iconic calling card, and the first stop on your Santorini tour. Here’s your first bit of trivia: The whitewashed homes that appear on so many postcards and photographs are larger than they appear on the outside. They’re partially built into existing cliffside caves, and feature some of the most distinctive Mediterranean architecture you’ll ever see.
Santorini sightseeing will no doubt bring you up the stairs and pathways to the blue-domed churches that stand guard over the island. From there, you can take in the exquisite view of the caldera and harbor below. If you get a little weary of the spectacular sights, don’t worry; there’s plenty of things to do besides wander the various clifftop towns. If you head down to water level, you can soak in the warm surf, explore Santorini’s many beaches, go for a drive along winding roads, or go on a fishing expedition from one of the harbors.
At the end of the day, gather with the residents and visitors atop the cliff towns and watch the sun drop into the ocean. You’ll never see a view quite like it.

Greece is the cradle of the European civilization, a quarry of mythology and ancient relics. On the Chalkidiki Peninsula we can visit the city of Thessalonica, the beaches of Katerini and Paralia, and from the boat we can take a look at the mystical monastery republic, Athos. Near the legendary Olympus Mountain we can take a look at the ‘rocks of gods’, the Meteora monasteries built on the sky-high cliffs. Athens’s well known building is the Acropolis, which is garlanded by the golden pillars of the Parthenon. The Agora was the marketplace of the ancient Athens, while the Plaka is a current, full of life eastern bazaar. From the capital the visitors can take journeys to the canal of Corinth and to the beaches of the Attican Riviera. From the dock of Pireus it is easy to take a boat and visit the islands of the Aegean and Ionic Sea. The islands tell us of Romans, Byzantines, pirates and knights. Among the olive tree gardens and orange trees white houses, temples and sunlit ruins are hiding. The sea is blue in the bays surrounded by beaches and on the terrace of a tavern the flavors of the Greek cuisine are always welcome.

Meteora is wonderful place( unique and unbelievable) where you can find 6 monasteries , 4 inhibited by men and 2 inhibited by women. The closest city is Kalambaka at just 5 km where you can find some hotels but the prices are pretty high , I suggest you to get accomodation in Larissa(100km away) or in Thessaloniki(250km away) , Meteora is a 1 day destination because if you follow to main road you can visit all monasteries in just few hours. You can visit here also a cave.
The Meteora means , 'middle of the sky','suspended in air'or 'in the heavens above' etymologically related with "Meteorite"
is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.
The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars,on the plane of Thessaly near the Pindus mountains in central Greece
You have 2 ways to get at Meteora , first is From Thessaloniki but you have to drive 250km and the second
is from larissa and you have to drive just 100km or you can take a bus from a travel agency.
About accommodation tell u that it is pretty bad and expensive ,
people usually come here to stay 1 night or maxim 2 because following the main road you can visit all monasteries in just 1 day
Meteora is a place where you can find 6 monasteries 4 inhibited by man and 2 inhinited by women.
As you can see to get here is not easy so take care.
And finnaly when you get to the monastery you have to pay a tax to visit it
In the 14th during the Ottoman invasion the monks decided to build new monasteries right on the pick,
the only safe place in the period of time
Here were 24 active monestries
Kalambaka is the closest city situated at just 5km
People started to live here thousands of years ago but in 9 century a group of monks move up to this nice place.
Meteora is a place where natural and man made wonders are linked makeing this place unique.
The Holy Monastery of Grand Meteoron is the largest of the monasteries located at Meteora.
It was elected in the mid-14th century and the building serves as the main museum for tourists
The holy monastery of Varlaam is the second largest monastery in the Meteora complex. It was built in 1541 and it is dedicated to all Saints.
The holy monastery of St.Stehen is a small church built in the 16th century. This monastery rests on the plain rather than on a cliff.
it was damaged by the Nazis during WW2 who believed it was harbouring insurgents and was abandoned.Nuns took it over and Reconstructed it.
The monastery of the Holy Trinity is on top of the cliffs and it was built in 1475.
The holy Monastery of St.Barbara was founded in the middle of 16th century.

About 500 retired military officers holding Greek flags rallied and marched to Parliament in Athens on Wednesday, protesting planned austerity cuts that will see a reduction in their pensions.
The government is trying to finalise an austerity package worth at least 11.5 (b) billion euros (15 billion US dollars) required for continued emergency rescue loans.
Unions are angry at the new cuts and have called a general strike for September 26.
Meanwhile in bailed out Portugal, dock workers were on strike protesting cuts to their sector.
Earlier in the week harbour pilots staged a 48-hour national strike over a cut in staffing levels which their unions say compromises safety.
Refinery workers were also on strike on Monday.
As stoppages were under way, Portugal carried out a successful short-term bond auction at steeply lower interest rates.
The auction's success, where the country borrowed 2 (b) billion euros (2.61 billion US dollars), was evidence that the European Central Bank's recently-unveiled plan to intervene in bond markets is boosting investor confidence.
The Treasury and Public Debt Management Agency said it raised 1.291 (b) billion euros in 18-month bills, paying a rate of 2.967 percent compared with 4.537 percent in the last comparable auction in April.
It said there was market demand for double the amount on offer.
It also raised 709 (m) million euros in 6-month bills at a rate of 1.7 percent, down from 2.292 percent in July and with demand three times higher than the amount offered.
The Treasury had planned to raise up to 1.75 (b) billion euros in the placement.
The successful auction Wednesday "was mostly due to the steps taken by the ECB," Pedro Santos, a broker at Banco Espirito Santo in Lisbon, said.
"Obviously, the fact that Portugal is complying with the (bailout) agreement was a big help, but the ECB's measures are
broader and show the world it will do everything it can to protect the eurozone and weaker countries like Portugal," he said.
Portugal is locked into a debt-reduction and economic reform programme demanded by lenders in return for the financial rescue.
It has earned praise for abiding by the agreement despite a recession which is forecast to extend into next year and a record unemployment rate of 15.7 percent.
But it recently announced plans for highly unpopular austerity measures, sparking countrywide protests.

It has earned praise for abiding by the agreement despite a recession which is forecast to extend into next year and a record unemployment rate of 15.7 percent.

Israel has been hosting fighter jet squadrons from the USA, Greece and Italy for a two-week joint aerial combat training exercise over its southern desert.
The 'Blue Flag' drill is said to be the first of its kind hosted by Israel, and follows the same pattern as the well known competitive US 'Red Flag' air exercises.
Israeli aircraft simulate the enemy as pilots train to dodge missiles at low altitudes and dog fight over the desert in the south of Israel.
International observers including the US ambassador to Israel attended the event at the Ouvda airbase near Eilat.
"We live in a tough world, a dangerous world. Israel lives in a dangerous neighbourhood and we need the best equipped, best trained forces as possible to protect our people and our security. We also need allies and we have great allies here," Ambassador Dan Shapiro told the media and assembled pilots on Monday.
Organisers say the overall goals of the first 'Blue Flag' are to improve the ability of the air forces to work together.

to death (later commuted to life imprisonment).
Between those two events was a year in which Greece
adjusted to its new-found freedoms. This report looks

STORYLINE:
The last of the French deployment for operation Essential Harvest was under way on Thursday.
The frigate "L'Orage" ("Storm") set sail from the port of Toulon at 1300 GMT for a five-day journey to the Greek port of Thessalonika.
The ship is carrying 50 members of the French Foreign Legion and 70 light armoured vehicles.
In Greece troops were preparing to leave the northern border town of Polikastro for Macedonia.
More than three hundred soldiers from the 525 mechanized infantry battalion will set up camp outside Macedonia's capital, Skopje, to help collect and transport weapons from Albanian rebels to steel mills in Greece for destruction.
And a first advanced unit consisting of 70 soldiers is preparing to leave as part of a 750-strong Italian contingent.
The rest of the Italian contingent will move in by next week.
The Italian 152 Sassari Infantry battalion will consist of 750 men and 250 vehicles and will initially be deployed around Skopje airport.
It will then will fan out to arms-collecting bases.
The battalion, specialised in peace-keeping missions, consists entirely of professional soldiers and not conscripts, although military service is compulsory in Italy.

The Vikings were seafaring north Germanic people who raided, traded, explored, and settled in wide areas of Europe, Asia, and the North Atlantic islands from the late 8th to the mid-11th centuries.
Much of what we know of ancient history is the history of militaries: their conquests, their movements, and their technological innovations. There are many reasons for this. Kingdoms and empires, the central units of control in the ancient world, could only be maintained through military force. Due to limited agricultural ability, there were relatively few areas that could support large communities, so fighting was common.
Weapons and armor, designed to be sturdy, tended to last longer than other artifacts, and thus a great deal of surviving artifacts recovered tend to fall in this category as they are more likely to survive. Weapons and armor were also mass-produced to a scale that makes them quite plentiful throughout history, and thus more likely to be found in archaeological digs. .

Uploaded by MILITARY HISTORY 2015. The Military History of Ancient Sparta and the Vikings. The Spartans were the most effective warriors of the Greek civilisations. In an attempt to permanently suppress their much larger class of slaves, the Spartans devoted themselves exclusively to military training.
The Vikings were remembered by their contemporaries as fierce, pagan raiders who threatened the Christian world.

A look at Ancient Civilizations and Ancient Greece in Italy. Nearly 2800 years ago, a group of Greek settlers landed on the coast of Italy. That event marked the start the process which created Magna Graecia, named after the motherland. Join us as we walk through the streets of Cumae, Pasteum, Puteoli, and Neapolis, reconstructed using the most advanced computer graphics.
Part 2 starts at 25.42 and looks Ancient Greece in Sicily. During the 4th Century BC, Sicily was the “new Greece” of the west. Our journey will take us to the various cultural centers that dotted the island, such as Syracuse, Agrigento, with the exquisite Valley of the Temples, and Selinus, present-day Selenunte.
Ancient Civilizations offers a comparative analysis of the field, including both old world and new civilizations, and explores the connections between all civilizations around the earth. The volume provides a jargon-free introduction to ancient civilizations from the first civilizations, and the great powers in the Near East, to the first Aegean civilizations, the Mediterranean world in the first millennium, Imperial Rome, northeast Africa, divine kings in southeast Asia, and empires in East Asia, as well as early states in the Americas and Andean civilization. For those interested in ancient civilizations.

The Greek military junta of 1967–74 (alternatively The Regime of the Colonels (Greek: Το καθεστώς των Συνταγματαρχών, To kathestos ton Syntagmatarhon), or in Greece The Junta (/ˈdʒʌntə/ or /ˈhʊntə/; Greek: Χούντα, [ˈxunda]), The Dictatorship (Greek: Η Δικτατορία, I diktatoría) and The Seven Years (Greek: Η Επταετία, I eptaetía) was a series of right-wing military juntas that ruled Greece following the 1967 Greek coup d'état led by a group of colonels on 21 April 1967. The dictatorship ended on 24 July 1974.
The historical repercussions of the junta were profound and are still felt to this day in Greece. Internally the absence of civil rights and the oppression that followed created a sense of fear and persecution among many in the population creating trauma and division that persisted long after the fall of the junta. The Cyprus debacle created a tragedy that is still unfolding.
While the Cyprus fiasco was due to the actions of Ioannidis,[89] it was Papadopoulos who started the cycle of coups. Externally the absence of human rights in a country belonging to the Western Bloc during the Cold War was a continuous source of embarrassment for the free world (considering Greece is seen as the inventor of democracy) and this and other reasons made Greece an international pariah abroad and interrupted her process of integration with the European Union with incalculable opportunity costs.[85]
The 21 April regime remains highly controversial to this day, with most Greeks holding very strong and polarized views in regards to it. According to a survey by Kapa Research published in the center-left newspaper To Vima in 2002, the majority of the electoral body (54.7%) consider the regime to have been bad or harmful for Greece while 20.7% consider it to have been good for Greece and 19.8% believe that it was neither good nor harmful.[90] In April 2013, the Metron Analysis Poll, found that 30% of Greeks yearned for the ´better´days of the Junta.[91]
The experiences in Greece were formative for several CIA officers, including Clair George and Gust Avrakotos. Gust, for example, dealt with the aftermath when Revolutionary Organization 17 November murdered his superior, CIA station chief Richard Welch in 1975. Many of his junta-connected associates were also assassinated in this time period. Gust himself had his cover blown by the media and his life became endangered.[2] In 1999, U.S. President Bill Clinton apologised on the behalf of the U.S. government for supporting the

Victor Davis Hanson (born September 5, 1953) is an American military historian, columnist, former classics professor, and scholar of ancient warfare. He has been a commentator on modern warfare and contemporary politics for National Review and other media outlets. He was a professor of classics at California State University, Fresno, and is currently the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. He has been a visiting professor at Hillsdale College since 2004. Hanson is perhaps best known for his 2001 book, Carnage and Culture.
Hanson was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2007 by President George W. Bush. Hanson is also a farmer, growing raisin grapes on a family farm in Selma, California, and a critic of social trends related to farming and agrarianism.
Hanson, who is of Swedish descent, grew up on a family farm at Selma, California, in the San Joaquin Valley. His mother was a lawyer and judge, his father an educator and college administrator. Hanson's father and uncle played college football at the College of the Pacific under Amos Alonzo Stagg.[3] Along with his older brother Nils and fraternal twin Alfred, Hanson attended public schools and graduated from Selma High School. Hanson received his BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1975[4] and his PhD in classics from Stanford University in 1980. He is a Protestant Christian.[5]
Hanson is currently a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Fellow in California Studies at the Claremont Institute, and professor emeritus at California State University, Fresno,[6] where he began teaching in 1984, having created the classics program at that institution.
In 1991 Hanson was awarded an American Philological Association's Excellence in Teaching Award, which is awarded to undergraduate teachers of Greek and Latin.[6] He has been a visiting professor of classics at Stanford University (1991–92), National Endowment for the Humanities fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California (1992–93), as well as holding the visiting Shifrin Chair of Military History at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland (2002–03).
Hanson writes a weekly column syndicated by Tribune Media Services, and has been published in The New York Times, American Heritage, and The New Criterion, among other publications. In 2006, he started blogging at PJ Media. In 2007, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush.
Hanson cites the Theban general and statesman Epaminondas, Winston Churchill, and the US generals William Tecumseh Sherman and George Patton as his heroes. In the field of military history, Hanson cites John Keegan as being influential, and shares a mutual admiration with fellow classicist Donald Kagan and the historian Steven Ozment.
Hanson co-authored the book Who Killed Homer? with John Heath. This book explores the issue of how classical education has declined in the US and what might be done to restore it to its former place. This is important, according to Hanson and Heath, because knowledge of the classical Greeks and Romans is necessary to fully understand Western culture. To begin a discussion along these lines the authors state, "The answer to why the world is becoming Westernized goes all the way back to the wisdom of the Greeks—reason enough why we must not abandon the study of our heritage".[8]
Hanson and Heath blame the academic classicists themselves for the decline, accusing them of becoming so infected with political correctness and postmodern thinking, not to mention egoism and money-grubbing (grants, visiting professorships, conference-hopping, promotion based on unreadable publications), that they have lost sight of what Hanson and Heath feel the classics truly represent. They say it this way, "the study of Greek in the last twenty years became a profession, a tiny world—but a world of sorts nonetheless—of jets, conferences, publicity, jargon, and perks".

By the eighth century BC, the Assyrians had created the largest empire to date - stretching from the Persian Mediterranean and encompassing the whole of the Middle East.
Philip of Macedonia transformed a largely peasant society into one of the most effective and successful armies of antiquity.
Ancient Assyrians starts at 00:10
Assyria was a major Semitic kingdom or empire of the Ancient Near East, existing in various forms during a period of approximately nineteen centuries from circa 2500 BC to 605 BC, spanning the Early Bronze Age through to the late Iron Age.
Ancient Macedonians starts at 23:38
The Macedonians were an ancient tribe from the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula, in the alluvial plain around the rivers Haliacmon and lower Axios.

Pete has a timely discussion about the Greek economic crisis with special guest Dmitry Orlov.
Dmitry Orlov is a Russian-American engineer and a writer on subjects related to "potential economic, ecological and political decline and collapse in the United States," something he has called “permanent crisis”. Orlov believes collapse will be the result of huge military budgets, government deficits, an unresponsive political system and declining oil production.
Orlov was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) and moved to the United States at the age of 12. He has a BS in Computer Engineering and an MA in Applied Linguistics. He was an eyewitness to the collapse of the Soviet Union over several extended visits to his Russian homeland between the late 1980s and mid-1990s.
In 2005 and 2006 Orlov wrote a number of articles comparing the collapse-preparedness of the U.S. and the Soviet Union published on small Peak Oil related sites. Orlov’s article "Closing the 'Collapse Gap': the USSR was better prepared for collapse than the US" was very popular at EnergyBulletin.Net.
In 2006 Orlov published an online manifesto, "The New Age of Sail." In 2007 he and his wife sold their apartment in Boston and bought a sailboat, fitted with solar panels and six months supply of propane, and capable of storing a large quantity of food stuffs. He calls it a “survival capsule.” He uses a bicycle for transportation. Having bartered vodka for necessities during one of his trips to the post-collapse Russia, he says "When faced with a collapsing economy, one should stop thinking of wealth in terms of money."
He continues to write regularly on his “Club Orlov” blog and at EnergyBulletin.Net.

Ancient Greece Documentary: Macedonia-A Civilization Uncovered (BBC Documentary History)
This BBC Documentary History is a full documentary film about the civilization of ancient Macedonia. The Macedonians (Greek: Μακεδόνες, Makedónes) were an ancient tribe that lived on the alluvial plain around the rivers Aliakmon and lower Axios in the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula. Macedonians, who were considered as an ancient Greek tribe, gradually expanded from their homeland along the Aliakmon valley on the northern edge of the Greek world, absorbing or driving out neighboring tribes, primarily Thracian and Illyrian.
This BBC documentary history, one of the best documentary films about the great civilization of the Greek tribe of Macedonians, explores the kingdom of Macedonia as seen from the eys of archaeologist Manolis Andronicos, who discovered the tomb of ruler Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. In this top documentary film we watch Manolis Andronicos extensive work to uncover a Macedonian settlement and we follow his attempts to prove that Greek Macedonian civilization was a sophisticated center of culture rather than an outpost of classical Greece.
This ancient history documentary film covers an unprecedented archeological discovery. In November 8th- 1977, Manolis Andronikos and his team were in front of an ancient discovery that caused worldwide excitement. Archaeologists had discovered a Macedonian tomb in Vergina. The bones of King Philip, the father of King Alexander, were found in a golden larnaca.

The Kingdom of Macedon that was established around the 8th century BC is mostly associated with the Argead dynasty, and the tribe named after it. Traditionally ruled by independent families, the Macedonians seem to have accepted Argead rule by the time of King Alexander I (r. 498–454 BC). Under King Philip II (r. 359–336 BC), they are credited with numerous military innovations, which enlarged their territory and increased their control over other areas, leading to the exploits of Alexander the Great, the establishment of several realms from the Diadochi, and the inauguration of the Hellenistic civilization.
