A Bangla band is any (modern) musical band that performs solely or mainly in the Bengali language and which uses Western principles of music.
As Western influences became more widespread, Bangla bands became popular with young people in the 1970s, both in India and Bangladesh, and have since become entrenched in modern Bengali culture.
However, recently traditional folk based bengali songs are getting significant polularity in Bangla band and such group is Mahul Folk Band of Kolkata, [1].
Bangla bands use a wide variety of styles such as rock, pop, hard rock, heavy metal, grunge, folk, and fusion. Their music is influenced both by popular American music/Latin music/Caribbean music as well as traditional Bengali folk music such as Zaari, Saari, Bhatiali, Bhawaiya, Shyama Sangeet and Baul.
Rupam Islam (born 25 January 1974) is a playback singer, song writer, composer and the lead singer of the band Fossils. He is a recipient of National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He won the award in 2010, for his work in the film Mahanagar @ Kolkata. Rupam has been selected to be a member of the Government of West Bengal's cultural committee for music (Bangla Sangeet Academy).
Born on 25 January 1974 in a family of musicians, Rupam’s musical journey started fairly early under the tutelage of his parents, renowned musicians of their time: late Nurul Islam and late Chhandita Islam. By the age of 4, he was performing on stage with his parents' choir group Jhankar Shilpi Goshthhi. By 9, he was an empanelled child artiste of Aakashvani and Doordarshan and had performed at all leading auditoriums of Kolkata.
Education went hand-in-hand with music, and he graduated from Asutosh College, an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta with honors in English literature. He completed his Bachelor’s in Education (B.Ed) and joined Taki Boys Mulitipurpose School where he taught English to primary school students for eleven years before voluntarily retiring in 2006 to concentrate on his career in music.
