With eleven years of existence, South Sudan is the youngest state on the planet. Who says young nation, says everything to build, everything to create.
For this, the population does not lack courage. It's a setting worthy of the greatest disaster films and yet the floods that have hit South Sudan for four years are very real.
The level of the White Nile has never been so high, entire towns are submerged, local populations are trying to preserve the few islands of land that serve as shelter. Boats have replaced trucks on flooded roads but the journey is not any easier. Sailing on submerged land means facing multiple dangers.

Is College Worth It? Re-Imagining Higher Education | Janine Davidson | TEDxMSUDenver
Public higher education is the foundation of the American dream – the idea that if you work hard enough, you can do better than your parents. And yet for the past 40 years, states have continued to dis-invest in public colleges and universities, eroding opportunities for young people and making the United States less competitive in the global economy.
Is it realistic to think we can turn back the clock on funding? Or do we need to find another way – a better way – to do business? Or maybe we should aim for both?
Together, we can shine a light on the truth about the value of a college degree and re-imagine higher education, so that our American dream isn’t just a dream for today’s students. Prior to her appointment in 2017, Davidson served as the 32nd undersecretary of the United States N...

Why More And More Colleges Are Closing Down Across America
The mid-2010's saw an uptick in U.S. college closures—particularly in the private nonprofit space.
Since 2016, 91 U.S. private colleges have either closed, merged with another school, or announced plans to close according to a CNBC analysis of data from Higher Ed Dive. This trend is affecting tens of thousands of college students across the country, with almost half of those schools closing after the onset of the pandemic in 2020. For many struggling schools the pandemic was the final straw—but two major themes showed up consistently throughout the closures: finances and enrollment.
"There are two significant issues affecting higher education right now," said The Princeton Review's Editor-in-Chief Robert Franek. "Specifically, through the admission and enrollment offices. Number one, it i...

Higher education is not about getting a job | Fred D'Agostino | TEDxUQ
Many people think the point of higher education is economic: graduates get better paying jobs and the economy gets the knowledge-workers it needs. But, there is another story. There is a role for higher education in skilling-up citizens so they can play an active and effective role in a democratic society. Hear from political philosopher, Professor Fred D'Agostino as he shares numerous examples of this alternative story.

For Michael Ray, music is his grandfather singing and sweating on a rural Florida stage. It’s the childhood refuge he found during the pain of his parents’ divorce. It’s family and stories, history and hope. Ray says music saved him, but it did even more: Music made him. In four short years, Ray has built an impressive foundation. Three No. 1 songs “Kiss You in the Morning,” “Think a Little Less,” and “One That Got Away,” plus “Get to You” and “Her World or Mine,” brings his tally to five Gold-certified singles. The poignant “Her World or Mine”––the third song off of his sophomore album Amos––also produced a video that has captured more than 19 million YouTube views since its debut less than a year ago. Now, two hit albums into that all-too-rare blend of critically acclaimed and commercially successful career, Ray has released “Whiskey And Rain,” the first single off of his upcoming project produced by GRAMMY-nominated song whisperer Ross Copperman. Proof that heartbroken wallowing can feel good if it swings, “Whiskey and Rain” also cements Ray as the ideal bridge between vintage country cool and modern country’s best sounds. See Ray live every Tuesday on his Honkytonk Tuesday virtual series, where he plays his favorite ‘80s and ‘90s tunes with surprise guests.

Prior to her appointment in 2017, Davidson served as the 32nd undersecretary of the United States Navy and the president’s appointed “chief management officer” for the Navy and Marine Corps. Her appointment as Navy “under” followed nearly 30 years of academic, civilian and military service.
She has taught at George Mason University, Georgetown University, Davidson College and various professional military schools, and was an aviation and aerobatics flight instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Davidson began her career as an Air Force officer and cargo pilot. She was a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Squadron Officer School, and was the first woman to fly the Air Force’s tactical C-130. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Number one, it is the admission cliff, and that is the impending decline. We'll be graduating our lowest high school classes by population in 2025. And most enrollment professionals have been wringing their hands about this date of 2025, but many schools have seen those enrollment declines already."
About 95% of U.S. colleges rely on tuition, according to Franek, meaning they rely on money from students to operate. Dwindling enrollment numbers mean less money, fewer student offerings, and eventually a shuttered institution.
"It's a reflection of, I think, an unsustainable operating platform, meaning a heavy reliance on tuition, which can't always keep up with inflation," said Fitch Ratings Senior Director Emily Wadhwani.
"It can't always keep up with erosion in enrollment. We can't keep hiking tuition sticker price in the hopes that the net residual once you account for scholarship and discounting and the like is gonna be enough to sort of offset your growing expense base."
