This is something I get asked often. What's the tipping culture in Qatar? Since there are so many different nationalities here, people get confused. In the US it's considered a requirement, in Japan it's an absolute no. Over here, tipping is entirely up to you. I typically give a tip that could be anything from 1-20 QR depending on the service I get and how much the initial bill is.
So it's up to you! Tell me, how much do YOU pay in your country?

Check back EVERY SUNDAY! In this episode of #QTips, we answer an important one about kissing. Let's set this straight first. This is for guys and you wouldn't do this between a male and female.
It's two kisses on the right cheek and three if you know the person well. If very good friends or if someone comes to respect you then it's a double tap of noses (eskimo style taps). If you are greeting an elder, kiss on the forehead as a sign of respect.
Oh and if there are three people in the room, there's no three-way greeting. One on one only!
Important!! It's two or three on the right cheek for us. Different nationalities tend to switch sides. So to avoid the unintended kiss on the lips, you can hold the persons left arm to ensure the person isn't moving anywhere :)

With summer's steamiest days just around the corner, a female activist group in Qatar has launched a campaign to remind tourists and expatriates alike that appropriate dress is still expected.
They're sending the message through print and social media.
Featured are guidelines about what the country's code of modesty entails and pointers on which body parts are to be covered.
For example, the display of knees and shoulders is to be avoided at all times.
That means the wearing of sundresses, miniskirts, short shorts, and tank tops is frowned upon.
Also clarified in the literature is that leggings are not pants. They are a layer, and thus, should be worn beneath another piece of clothing.
Said the country's Islamic Culture Center chief of public relations who initiated a previous initiative to teach foreigners about the dress code, "The amount of immodest clothing is growing in public places, especially shopping malls. Such foreigner behavior conflicts with our traditions."
He also noted that it sets a poor example for the younger generations.
His feelings are shared by other officials in the country.
The latest campaign's leader expressed her concern that if the youth continue to be exposed to immodesty and the acceptance of modernism, they may begin rebelling against tradition.

The Cultural Village Foundation is an exceptional project of hope for human interaction through art and cultural exchange -- a project made possible thanks to the inspired vision, solid faith and wise leadership of HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar.
Keeping pace with the emerging global culture that emphasises the importance of diversity in human development, Katara Cultural Village is the largest and the most multidimensional cultural project of Qatar. It is a place where people come together to experience the cultures of the world. With beautiful theatres, concert halls, exhibition galleries and cutting-edge facilities, Katara aims to become a world leader for multi-cultural activities.
In line with the goals set forward by the Qatar National Vision 2030, Katara serves as a guardian to the heritage and traditions of Qatar and endeavours to spread awareness about the importance of every culture and civilization and as such, Katara hosts international, regional and local festivals, workshops, performances and exhibitions.
Katara was born out of a long held vision to position the State of Qatar as a cultural beacon a lighthouse of art, radiating in the Middle East through theatre, literature, music, visual art, conventions and exhibitions.
This village shall be a glimpse of the future of a world where people of different cultural backgrounds overcome their national boundaries and embrace common causes to promote a united humanity.
Katara is where the grace of the past meets the splendour of the future.
Since the year 150 AD, "Catara" was the first and most ancient name designated for Qatar Peninsula in geographic and historical maps. On the map drawn by the geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus in 150 AD, published in 882 AD -1477 AD and later in the Historical Atlas of Islam, the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula in the middle of the second century AD were identified. It also stipulated the geographical location of Qatar Peninsula under the name of Catara, North West of Gerra or near it, and to the west of the town of Cadara.
The name "Katara" appeared in the geographical and historical maps in early eighteenth century AD. In a French map of the Arabian Peninsula coast line, sea and gulf, the name was written "Katara" instead of "Catara," which was the designation used by geographers from the map of Ptolemaeus in 150 AD until 1738 AD.
Tracking the etymology of Qatar throughout history is both useful and interesting given Qatar's cultural and educational wealth. This cultural richness plays a very important role in promoting and building the Qatari society. The attachment to our ancient roots together with premeditated modernisation and technological advancement form the solid foundation of Qatari personality and values.
It was decided to revive Qatar's olden name to uphold our connection to ancient heritage and to honour Qatar's distinguished position since the dawn of history.
Katara is a place where people share cultures to nurture understanding and peace.
In an ever-evolving digitalised global world, our goal is to provide a platform for people of the world to come together and share the wealth of their vibrant cultures, to embrace differences that make our world unique and to discover similarities that unite people regardless of their origin.
Inspiring
We are friendly and engage people in exciting cultural experiences.
Multi-Cultural
We are proud of our national heritage and we respect all cultures of the world.

We are a professional team that always provides our customers with an excellent experience.

Qatar Museums’ website: A contemporary approach to traditional Middle-Eastern culture
Qatar is changing at an extraordinary pace. Its ambitious cultural programme required an online presence that allows users to express their creativity, get involved with local activities, and have a dialogue with the museums. Our challenge was to align these contemporary aspirations with Arabic traditions and heritage. Working closely with Qatar Museums and Wolff Olins, we created a website which is bold and playful, whilst respecting the distinctive character and aesthetics of the region. A detailed six-month research programme, conducted in both Doha and London, gave us the understanding we needed to then design and implement the new website.

I had an opportunity to attend my colleague's (Qatari) wedding and this is my first experience to arab wedding culture. Groom & bride will be in separate halls (Gents & Ladies). Along with other Indian colleagues, we entered Gents hall and greeted Groom. It was a big hall with chairs arranged only on its periphery. We were served with Arabic Coffee (Gava) and Halva (Sweet) initially. Then traditional Qatari dance - Ardah (a folkloric dance done while wielding a sword) was performed by some of Qataris. Function ended with Buffet having main course as Camel Kabsa & several other items.

Alex Morrison, Managing Director of Cogapp, presents Qatar Museums’ website: A contemporary approach to traditional Middle-Eastern culture. Qatar Museums' website won Silver Prize for Best Cultural Experience at the 2014 UX Awards in San Francisco.

This 26 minute documentary -- made by Oxford Film and Television and narrated by David Thewlis -- tells the story of Damien Hirst's first solo exhibition in the Middle East ('Relics', QMA, Doha: 10 October 2013 -- 22 January 2014). The film charts the monumental preparations the exhibition required, and investigates a selection of the artist's key works including 'Leviathan': Hirst's largest ever shark sculpture, unveiled for the first time in Doha. Containing compelling footage of some of the most iconic artworks of our time, it also includes exclusive interviews with Damien himself, as well as key figures from the contemporary art world and those involved in the staging of Hirst's largest ever retrospective.
The exhibition forms part of a series of cultural initiatives organised by QMA in order to foster discussions and cultural exchange between the UK and Qatar. It forms part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture which celebrates and showcases the deep-rooted bilateral relations between Qatar and the UK.

Separating Islam from the cultures of the people is very important as many people have linked some of these barbaric Cultural practices to Islam such as Honour killings, acid attacks, forced marriages, abuse of basic human rights. As a result some have left Islam because of these Cultural practises not to mention the propaganda from the media
Dr Bilal Philips talks about the impact of culture on our practice of Islam and the importance of putting Islamic values before cultural values.
"It is He (Allah) Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad peace be upon him) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism) and teaching them the Book (this Quran, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship or the Prophet). And verily, they had been before in manifest error" (Surah Al-Jumaah 62:2)

ABOUT THE SPEAKER -
DR. ABU AMEENAH BILAL PHILIPS was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up in Toronto, where he converted to Islam in 1972. His whole life has been exemplified by his goal of seeking and conveying Islamic knowledge in order to "Change the Muslim Nation through Islamic Education."
In preparation for this goal, he first acquired a B.A. from the College of Islamic Disciplines at the Islamic University of Medina (1979), then an M.A. in aqeedah (Islamic Theology) from King Saud University in Riyadh (1985), and finally a PhD in Islamic Theology from the University of Wales (1994). Interestingly enough, His PhD thesis was on "The Exorcist Tradition in Islam".
After graduation from the University of Medina, Dr Bilal spent ten years teaching Islamic studies in an Islamic high school in Riyadh, and another ten years lecturing in Arabic and Islamic studies in the American University in Dubai, UAE.
In 1994 he founded the first Islamic Information Center in Dubai. He has served as the head of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Preston University-Ajman, UAE; lecturer and director of the Da'wah and Education at Qatar Guest Center, Doha, Qatar; founder and head of the English medium Islamic studies department of Knowledge International University, Riyadh; founder and head of the College of Da'wah and Islamic Culture (English Section) at Omdurman Islamic University, Sudan; founder and head of Preston International University College in Chennai, India; and founder and Dean of the Islamic Studies Academy in Doha, Qatar.
But perhaps his greatest achievement, and the one for which he was listed in the Jordanian publication, "The 500 Most Influential Muslims", is the historic founding of the Islamic Online University which in only 5 years has over 80,000 students registered from every country on the face of this earth! Unlike the other educational programs he has founded and overseen over the years, IOU makes it possible for any person from any location in the world to receive an Islamic education absolutely free.
IOU was launched in 2007 with a free diploma program in Islamic Studies and introduced its fully accredited tuition-free Bachelor's program (BAIS) in 2010. Plans are currently being made for a Master's program (MAIS) for 2013. Dr. Bilal has served as IOU's chancellor from the beginning.
Dr Bilal Philips has written, translated and commented on over 50 published books on various Islamic topics and he has also edited and published the 56-book Eemaan English Reading Series for children and Muslim schools. Dr Philips has also presented Islamic programs for a number of years on Riyadh Channel 2TV, Sharjah TV, Peace TV, Huda TV, Islam Channel, UK, and the Deen Show, Chicago, USA and GuideUS TV, from Washington USA.
Currently (2012), Dr Bilal is the Imaam and khateeb at Abu Hurairah Center where he teaches 5 free university-level classes weekly and counsels Muslim families two days per week.
