Taksim Square:
Taksim Square (Turkish: Taksim Meydanı), situated in the European part of Istanbul, Turkey, is a major tourist and leisure district famed for its restaurants, shops, and hotels. It is considered the heart of modern Istanbul, with the central station of the Istanbul Metro network. Taksim Square is also the location of the Monument of the Republic (Turkish: Cumhuriyet Anıtı) which was crafted by Pietro Canonica and inaugurated in 1928. The monument commemorates the 5th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, following the Turkish War of Independence. The word Taksim means "division" or "distribution". The Taksim square was originally the point where the main water lines from the north of Istanbul were collected and branched off to other parts of the city (hence the name.) This use for the area was established by Sultan Mahmud I. The square takes its name from the Ottoman era stone reservoir which is located in this area. Additionally, the word "Taksim" can refer to a special improvisational musical form in Turkish classical music that is guided by the Makam system. Another significant building that once stood on the square was the 19th century Taksim Artillery Barracks (Taksim Topçu Kışlası, which later became the Taksim Stadium), but it was demolished in 1940 during the construction works of the Taksim Park (Taksim Gezi Parkı.) Taksim is a main transportation hub and a popular destination for both tourists and the native population of Istanbul. İstiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), a long pedestrian shopping street, ends at this square, and a nostalgic tram runs from the square along the avenue, ending near the Tünel (1875) which is the world's second-oldest subway line after London's Underground (1863). Surrounding Taksim Square are numerous travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, pubs, and international fast food chains such as Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Subway, and Burger King. It is also home to some of Istanbul's grandest hotels including the InterContinental, the Ritz-Carlton, and The Marmara Hotel.Taksim is also a favourite location for public events such as parades, New Year celebrations, or other social gatherings.Atatürk Cultural Center (Atatürk Kültür Merkezi), a multi-purpose cultural center and opera house, is also located at Taksim Square.NTV television had its morning news studio on Taksim Square for a number of broadcasting seasons, before moving to its new studio in 2011. Taksim Square is an important hub for public transport in Istanbul. In addition to serving as the main transfer point for the municipal bus system, Taksim Square is also the terminus of the Hacıosman-4. Levent-Taksim-Yenikapı subway line of the Istanbul Metro. The İstiklal Avenue-Tünel nostalgic tram line also starts in Taksim.Taksim's position was given an extra boost on June 29, 2006, when the new Kabataş-Taksim Funicular line F1 connecting the Taksim Metro station with the Kabataş tramway station and Seabus port was opened, allowing people to ascend to Taksim in just 110 seconds.

Paddy's Taksim square from their new album "Ramblin' with the Rats - Stolen Songs of Struggle" and definitely in solidarity with Gezi, Brazil and the struggles all over the world!
Paddy's Taksim Square
Paddy came from Dublin, I met him on the train
He said I have to take a drink as quickly as I can
I asked him for the reason and what he felt was wrong
"I heard the best of warcries yet not in my mothertongue"
Her yer Taksim, her yer Direniş
Paddy has no difficulties ever understanding this
No matter if it's Istanbul, Brazil or day or night
Everywhere is Taksim-Square and everywhere we fight
What is this war you're talkin' of? For Europe hails the peace
"Oh don't you see the force" says he "the army and police
They're goin' in for banks and wealth in armor and in gears
The emblems of the century are truly gas and tears"
Her yer Taksim, her yer Direniş
Paddy has no difficulties ever understanding this
No matter if it's Istanbul, Brazil or day or night
Everywhere is Taksim-Square and everywhere we fight
In Irleand we fight the fees, in Germany the banks
In Britain Unions organize, they strike in Spain and France
Greece is bleeding right to death and Turkey drowns in grief
That's the peace you're seein', mate, the peace of thug and thief
Her yer Taksim, her yer Direniş
Paddy has no difficulties ever understanding this
No matter if it's Istanbul, Brazil or day or night
Everywhere is Taksim-Square and everywhere we fight
In Dublin we had pints so black, in Frankfurt we had shots
Great supply in London, in Madrid and Paris lots
Athens welcomed us with Ooze, whole Istanbul is free
But when we leave the train to fight: We're sober as a tree!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61e2cKRLa_o
My trip started from Eminonu seaport, the continued toward Taksim Square ( City Center on the European Side).
then walk along famous Istiklal Avenue where St. Antonio Church and Galata tower , where in between historic tram is still being used .
In SultanAhmet, I went to gullhane park (hunting places for the Sultan) and Sultanahmet park with its lovely fountain. then the Hippodrome , the ancient greek horse and chariot racing place.
From there I visited SultanAhmet Mosque ( famously known as Blue Mosque), and Hagia Sophia( Museum that has been used both as Church and Mosque).
and the Basilica Cistern, the underground water reservoir that well preserved till now.
Detail on the SultanAhmet can be found here :

Europe trip 2015
We arrived early in the morning and settled in at our hotel in Taksim Square. Our first impression was that our hotel was located in a pretty sketchy area where everything was closed...but that was because it was closed during the day. At night it was BOOMING!
We ventured out to some close by tourist areas on transit. Everything was really accessible by transit and all the main areas were close together.
We discovered cafeteria styled restaurants which is great for cheap meals and a big variety of food and cay, which is the turkish tea and these little shops are a great place to hang out!

http://davidsbeenhere.com Join David as he shows you around the top 15 places to see in Istanbul! Istanbul is one of the only transcontinental cities on the planet, spreading across Europe and Asia Minor. As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul is a bustling hub of culture, history and gastronomy – a cosmopolitan capital in every sense.
David begins in the oldest part of the city, the Sultanahmet District. He begins in the Hippodrome (circus), which served as the center of public life for the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine citizens. Present-day Sultan Ahmed Square has a handful of surviving remnants from ancient times.
Near Sultan Ahmed Square are two of Turkey’s most visited attractions, steps from one another – the Ayia Sofia (Hagia Sophia) and Blue Mosque. The Ayia Sofia is now a museum, but was built as an Eastern Orthodox Basilica in 535 A.D. It was a Christian church for over 900 years before the Ottomans used it as a Mosque for another 481 years. It was the largest house of worship in the world for over 1,000 years!
Across the square is the Blue Mosque. Its name comes from the blue tiles used to decorate the interior. Nearby sits the stunning 15th century Topkapi Palace that served as the home and governmental seat for the Ottoman sultans until the 1850s. A tour will reveal beautiful stonework and intricately decorated staterooms, as well as a crown jewel and Imperial treasury exhibition.
After the palace, David takes us to the Archaeology Museum to show us some of what was uncovered in Istanbul. Perhaps the most impressive thing on display is the Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great with its detailed reliefs depicting Alexander’s life of successful conquering.
Not too far from the museum is the Basilica Cistern – a damp and dark subterranean cavern used to collect water for the city. The Medusa heads were likely stolen from a nearby Greco-Roman city to support the columns. Medusa’s face provided a warning against anyone who dared to tamper with the water supply.
The next day, David heads over to the 300-year-old Cağaloğlu Hamamı for a Turkish bath. This Hammam provides full-service spa treatments including scrubbing, steam baths, and massages. Definitely a MUST experience when in Istanbul.
Now time for some shopping… First stop, the Egyptian Spice Bazaar, a spice market that is primarily for tourists, but still an experience to walk through and see all the desserts, spices, and souvenirs for sale. Afterwards, some more serious shopping at the Grand Bazaar – one of the absolute best places to shop in the country! There are over 4,000 shops spanning an area of over 30,700 square feet! If you’re planning to spend a lot of time here, or looking for something in particular, we recommend you hire a guide to help. This place is gigantic!
David then heads to the shores of the Bosphorus for a scenic boat ride along the strait. From the water you’ll get panoramic vistas of the Istanbul skyline and get to enjoy view of other areas of this enormous city.
After arriving back on land, David heads to the Beyoğlu District to beautiful pedestrian-friendly Istiklal Street, or “Independence Avenue” for some lunch. It spans about 1.4 kilometers and is the perfect place for shopping and dining. You can walk or take the Nostalgic Tram in either direction. The end of Istiklal Street takes David into the heart of Istanbul, Taksim Square. This bustling intersection is a major transportation hub and meeting point. In the center of the square is the Monument of the Republic (1928) commemorating the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Onto the Galata District to see a Whirling Dervish show at the Galata Museum. This 800-year old practice of spinning is used as a physical form of meditation. It is a mysterious and beautiful site to behold.
You can’t visit the Galata District and not notice the Galata Tower. It looks over Istanbul and provides 360-degree views of the city, the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and landmarks.
After all that sightseeing, David works up an appetite so he heads to the Karaköy waterfront to enjoy a cheap meal with a 5-star view. Nearby is the fish market. You can’t get to the Karaköy or Galata without crossing the Galata Bridge. This massive bridge is comprised of two stories. The top is used for pedestrian and car transit, while the bottom is full of restaurants. It’s a mix of noise, smells, and vibrant life! If you have the chance, walk it at least once. From here you’ll see the skylines of both Sultanahmet and Galata districts.
Lastly, David goes out to one of the most exclusive entertainment complexes in the world. Reina sits along the Bosphorus and offers world-class dining, nightclubs, and beautiful ambiance. Dress to impress and make dinner reservations so you can stay after to party!
We hope you like our list of the top 15 places to see in Istanbul!

Taksim Square (Turkish: Taksim Meydanı), situated in the European part of Istanbul, Turkey, is a major tourist and leisure district famed for its restaurants, shops, and hotels.
