Robert Caplin: http://RobertCaplin.com
Joe McNally (http://JoeMcnally.com/) is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 50 countries. He has shot cover stories for TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, New York, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and Men's Journal. He has been at various times in his career a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, a staff photographer at LIFE, and currently, an ongoing 23 year contributor to the National Geographic, shooting numerous cover stories for those publications.
Joe was listed by American Photo as one of the 100 Most Important people in Photography and described by the magazine as "perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today". He has been honored as a member of Kodak-PDN Legends Online, as well as being a Nikon Legend Behind the Lens. In 2010, he was voted as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade in an industry-wide Photo District News survey. McNally won the first Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Journalist Impact for a LIFE coverage titled "The Panorama of War." He has also been honored numerous times by Communication Arts, PDN, Graphis, American Photo, POY, and The World Press Photo Foundation.
In the aftermath of 9/11, McNally, using the world's only life-sized Polaroid camera, created a project called "Faces of Ground Zero," which traveled through 2002, became a book, and helped generate approximately $2 million for the relief effort. It is considered by many museum and art professionals to be one of the most important artistic endeavors to evolve from the 9/11 tragedy. His fine art work is represented by Monroe Gallery of Santa Fe, and his prints are in numerous collections, most significantly the National Portrait Gallery of the United States.
He shot the first all-digital coverage of the history of the National Geographic, called "The Future of Flying," a 32-page cover story commemorating the centennial observance of the Wright Brothers' flight. The coverage was deemed noteworthy enough that it has been incorporated into the archives of the Library of Congress. In the last two years, McNally has written two books, The Moment It Clicks, and The Hot Shoe Diaries, both of which cracked Amazon's top ten list of best sellers. His advertising and commercial clients include FedEx, Epson, Sony, Nikon, Land's End, General Electric, MetLife, Adidas, American Ballet Theater, and the Wildlife Conservation Society, among others.
He's known internationally for his ability to produce technically and logistically complex assignments with expert use of color and light. As part of his teaching activities, he conducts numerous workshops around the world.

Soca (Slovenia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Vacation travel video about destination Soca in Slovenia.
The Julian Alps are rugged karst mountains located on the sunny side of the Alps not far from the Mediterranean, and are one of the wildest, untouched regions in Slovenia. The Trenta Valley is the source of one of the most beautiful rivers in the Alps, the Soča in Slovenia, becoming the Isonzo in Italy - that flows from a mountain cave. In Trnovo the river flows into a narrow white-water gorge and large chunks of rock, the result of various earthquakes, lie on the riverbed. Many tributaries feed the Soča, along with the Tolminka River whose sixty metre deep gorge can be seen from the Devil's Bridge. On a trail through the gorge are a variety of plants and insects which Dr. Julius Kugy, a mountaineer and writer, once recorded in meticulous detail. It is believed that famous Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, once visited the Tolimka Canyons while staying in Tolmin and that the locality inspired his vision of the Underworld in his, Divina Comedia. The largest stone railway bridge in the world crosses the pristine Soča which finally becomes, in Italy, the Isonzo River, situated within a delta in the Adriatic Sea.

Robert Shapiro Ph,D - Original air date: March 1986
Robert Shapiro is Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Chemistry at New York
University. He is author or co-author of over 125 publications, primarily in the area of DNA chemistry, and in the origin of life. In particular, he and his co-workers have studied the ways in which environmental chemicals can damage our hereditary material, causing changes that can lead to mutations and cancer. His research has been supported by numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation and other organizations. Further details can be found at the following website:
http://chemistry.fas.nyu.edu/object/robertshapiro.html
Professor Shapiro was born on November 28, 1935 in New York City and obtained a BS in chemistry, summa cum laude (1956) from the City College of New York He received a PhD degree in organic chemistry from Harvard, under the supervision of Nobel Laureate R.B. Woodward (1959), postdoctoral training in DNA chemistry at Cambridge with Nobel Laureate Lord Todd (1959-1960). After an additional year of postdoctoral study at the NYU Medical School, he joined the NYU Chemistry Department in 1961. He has held a Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health and has been awarded (with physicist Paul Davies) the Trotter Prize in Complexity, Information and Inference for 2004.
In addition to his research, Professor Shapiro has written four books and several magazine articles for the general public. The books include:
1. "Life Beyond Earth", co-author with Gerald Feinberg, (Morrow 1980). This book advanced a very positive view about the possibilities for life elsewhere in the Universe. For example, it discussed the possibility of life in underground niches on Mars, in oceans beneath the frozen surfaces of the satellites of Jupiter, and in various environments within Titan, a satellite of Saturn. Today, these sites rank at the top of NASA's agenda, in searching for life within our Solar System. In addition, it described a number of exotic possibilities for life based on substances other than carbon or water.
Timothy Ferris, commented in a front-page review in the New York Times Book Review: "Informative and authoritative yet venturesome and readable, 'Life Beyond Earth' is one of the best books on Earth about life elsewhere." The New Yorker observed: "For people who like to rerad about solid scientific speculation, this is an exhilarating, informative, and ultimately liberating book."
2. "Origins, a Skeptic's Guide to the Creation of Life on Earth", (Simon & Schuster, 1986). This work is described elsewhere in this web site.
3. "The Human Blueprint", (St. Martin's Press, 1991). This work described the current and future course of the Human Genome Project. It anticipated the use of DNA testing to resolve the Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemings paternity question, and the Anastasia controversy, as well as the use of DNA analysis to track the historical movement of human populations. It was an alternate Book-of-the Month Club Selection for Sept. 1991, and in German translation, this book was selected by the jury "Bild am Wissenschaft" as the "Wissenschaftbuch des Jahres" (Science Book of the Year).
4. "Planetary Dreams", (Wiley, 1999). This work is described elsewhere in this web site.
Professor Shapiro has commented: "obviously, I have developed a taste for very large scientific topics".
When he is not involved in research, lecturing or writing, he enjoys running, hiking, wine-tastings, raquetball, and travel. He and his wife Sandra, a clinical psychologist practicing in New York, were married in 1964. Their son, Michael, born in 1971, composes music for films (http://mikemusic.com).
