On January 6, a 14-year-old Kurdish boy named Ümit Kurt was shot dead by Turkish special forces in the Syrian border town of Cizre in southeast Turkey.
Ümit Kurt was killed as he walked home through an area controlled by the Patriotic Revolutionary Youth Movement (YDG-H), the militant youth wing of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The YDG-H has been acting as a paramilitary force in Cizre for the past few months and has closed off several Kurdish neighborhoods with their armed checkpoints and patrols.
VICE News gained exclusive access to members of the YDG-H, mostly in their teens and early twenties, who give their story on why

Why Is Turkey Bombing ISIS’s Enemy?
Turkey recently joined the fight against ISIS, opening up their air bases for NATO use. More recently, however, they have been attacking Kurdish fighters who have been highly effective in combating ISIS. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Behind the scenes, American lobbyists employed by Turkey started working to block U.S. military assistance to Kurdish fighters last year, lobbying disclosures show.
This past week, the Turkish government made two critical air bases available to U.S. forces, a long-sought concession that allows the U.S. military to launch anti-ISIS ra

Michelle Allison, Women's Representative of the Kurdish National Congress, talks to Going Underground host Afshin Rattansi about the role of Turkey and the Kurds in the fight against ISIS. She says that whilst NATO expects Turkey to join in the war against ISIS, they are reluctant to do so, and are attacking Kurds instead. With flags of Abdullah Öcalan, the founder of the PKK, flying in demonstrations in Parliament Square, she explains there is a fight for equal rights for Kurds in Turkey, but any time they demand more rights, the response is ‘brutality’. Anger and frustration among Kurds as Turkey hits PKK
Many Kurds are angry and frustrated that the Turkish government seems to be equating the threat from ISIL with the threat from the PKK.
In Diyarbakir, a mainly Kurdish city in south eastern Turkey, representatives from more than eighty NGO's met to work out a joint response to what they fear is a threat tlllo the already fragile peace process between the PKK and the government.

When Islamic State jihadists launched a major offensive on the majority Kurdish town of Kobane in September, more than 180,000 people fled across the border into Turkey. Local authorities struggled to cope with the influx at first, and thousands of refugees were forced to sleep on the streets of the Turkish border town of Suruc. Now camps are being set up to provide shelter and other assistance.
With the borders closed and thousands unable to leave Kobane, VICE News visited one of six refugee camps in the town to find out how refugee families — some sharing tents with up to

THE DEBATE : The ripples from the ongoing battle with the Islamic State Group have well and truly extended into neighbouring Turkey. As Ankara continues its bombing campaign against the jihadist fighters, there are claims that it's been bombing Kurdish forces in Syria. Turkey denies the allegations - as it carries out air raids on the Kurdish militant PKK group in Iraq following last week's violent attacks. What does Turkish involvement mean for what has become an even more messy conflict?

PKK leader: Turkey is protecting IS by attacking Kurds - BBC News
In the battle against the so-called Islamic State, it's Kurdish fighters who have been responsible for the most significant victories. Among their ranks, many consider the PKK to have been most effective. But, the group is also accused of being a terrorist organisation by Turkey, and others. In recent weeks Turkey started a bombing campaign against them. The BBC's Jiyar Gol travelled to the PKK's mountain bases in Iraqi Kurdistan for an exclusive interview with the group's main leader, Cemil Bayik. He started by asking him if his organisation was responsible for breaking the ceasefire between his group and Turkey.

While Turkey is leading a strategic bombing campaign against the Islamic State (IS) on its home turf, reports have been surfacing that the nation has been targeting Kurdish settlements in particular, including those that have been valuable in the fight against IS. Simone Del Rosario speaks with Kani Xulam, of the American Kurdish Information Network, to get the full picture behind Turkey’s military strategy – one that relies on American military hardware.

Has Turkey bitten off more than it can chew?
Has Turkey bitten off more than it can chew?
Turkey is now fighting two very different battles at the same time.
Turkish fighter jets have been hitting PKK positions in Iraq for days.
The Kurdish PKK has been fighting for greater autonomy within Turkey for 30 years, and more than 40,000 Turkish and Kurdish soldiers and civilians have died during the struggle.
Between 30 and 40 million Kurds live in adjoining regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria.
Meanwhile, at the same time, Turkey is now also bombing ISIL bases in Syria.
The battles become complicated when you take into account the group at the forefront of the international fight against ISIL is another Kurdish group; the YPG.

Syrian Kurds urge Turkey to halt “aggression” against them
Syrian Kurds say the Turkish army has attacked their fighters and positions in northern Syria. They’ve urged Ankara to immediately stop what they call its aggression.
The Kurdish People’s Protection Units say the Turkish army is attacking their positions instead of targeting ISIL-held areas. Kurdish sources say Turkish tanks heavily pounded their positions in two Aleppo villages overnight, leaving several people injured. A Turkish government official has denied the attack, saying the Kurds’ positions remain outside the scope of Ankara’s military action. Turkey claims its ongoing military campaign is against P-K-K militants in Iraq and ISIL
