Ethnic Kurds compose 25% of the population in Turkey (Turdish: Türkiye'deki Kürtler, Kurdish: Kurdên li Tirkiye). Unlike the Turkish people, the Kurds speak an Indo-European language. There are Kurds living in all provinces of Turkey, but are primarily concentrated in the east and southeast of the country, which largely resembles the historical region of Kurdistan.
In the 1930s, Turkish government policy aimed at assimilating Kurds in Turkey, many have resisted these measures and today Kurds make up around 20-30% of the population of Turkey. Since the 1980s, Kurdish movements included both peaceful political activities for basic civil rights for Kurds in Turkey as well as violent armed rebellion and guerrilla warfare, including terrorist attacks aiming Turkish soldiers and their families, demanding a separate Kurdish state. According to a Turkish opinion poll, 59% of self-identified Kurds in Turkey think that Kurds in Turkey do not seek a separate state (while 71.3% of self-identified Turks think they do).

Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye), known officially as the Republic of Turkey (
Türkiye Cumhuriyeti (help·info)), is a Eurasian country located in Western Asia (mostly in the Anatolian peninsula) and in East Thrace in Southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhchivan) and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea is to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. The Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the boundary between East Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia.
Turkey is one of the six independent Turkic states. The vast majority of the population are Muslims. The country's official language is Turkish, whereas Kurdish and Zazaki languages are spoken by Kurds and Zazas, who constitute 18% of the population.

The Kurdish people, or Kurds (Kurdish: کورد Kurd), are an Iranic people native to the Middle East, mostly inhabiting a region known as Kurdistan, which includes adjacent parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. They speak the Kurdish language, which is a member of the Iranian branch of Indo-European languages. The Kurds number about 30 million, the majority living in the Middle East, with significant Kurdish diaspora communities in the cities of western Turkey, in Armenia, Georgia, Israel, Azerbaijan, Russia, Lebanon and, in recent decades, some European countries and the United States. The Kurds are an indigenous ethnic minority in countries where the Kurdistan region is located, although they have enjoyed partial autonomy in Iraqi Kurdistan since 1991. An irredentist movement pushes for the creation of a Kurdish nation state.
The exact origins of the name, "Kurd", are unclear. Reynolds believes that the term Kurd is most likely related to the ancient term Qardu. The common root of Kurd and Qardu is first mentioned in a Sumerian tablet from the third millennium B.C. as the "land of Kar-da." Qardu is etymologically related to the Assyrian term Urartu corresponding to Ararat. According to Asatrian, the most reasonable explanation of this ethnonym is its possible connections with the Cyrtii (Cyrtaei)

In the battle against the so-called Islamic State, it's Kurdish fighters who have been responsible for the most significant victories. Among their ranks, many consider the PKK to have been most effective. But, the group is also accused of being a terrorist organisation by Turkey, and others. In recent weeks Turkey started a bombing campaign against them. The BBC's Jiyar Gol travelled to the PKK's mountain bases in Iraqi Kurdistan for an exclusive interview with the group's main leader, Cemil Bayik. The Kurdish PKK has been fighting for greater autonomy within Turkey for 30 years, and more than 40,000 Turkish and Kurdish soldiers and civilians have died during the struggle. On January 6, a 14-year-old Kurdish boy named Ümit Kurt was shot dead by Turkish special forces in the Syrian border town of Cizre in southeast Turkey.
Ümit Kurt was killed as he walked home through an area controlled by the Patriotic Revolutionary Youth Movement (YDG-H), the militant youth wing of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The YDG-H has been acting as a paramilitary force in Cizre for the past few months and has closed off several Kurdish neighborhoods with their armed checkpoints and patrols.
VICE News gained exclusive access to members of the YDG-H, mostly in their teens and early twenties, who give their story on why gun battles broke out between them and the Turkish security forces, leading to some of the worst fighting in Cizre since the 1990s.

Since the advance of the ISIL, Turkey has increased military activity along its border with Syria and Iraq. Turkey is also worried that Kurdish fighter group in Syria, the YPG, has been gaining territory from ISIL. Al Jazeera’s Gerald Tan reports.

She says that whilst NATO expects Turkey to join in the war against ISIS, they are reluctant to do so, and are attacking Kurds instead. With flags of Abdullah Öcalan, the founder of the PKK, flying in demonstrations in Parliament Square, she explains there is a fight for equal rights for Kurds in Turkey, but any time they demand more rights, the response is ‘brutality’. Turkey tries to demonise them, but she points to Kobanê, where they are ‘watching the massacre happening’ and hopes this could lead to a change from the West regarding Turkey’s attitude towards them. She says Turkey is ‘supporting ISIS’, with the Prime Minister unable to even say they were a terrorist organisation for a long time. Most of the Kurdish people are after a secular, democratic establishment in the region, but all Turkey wants is to continue showing them to the world as the enemy. When Islamic State jihadists launched a major offensive on the majority Kurdish town of Kobane in September, more than 180,000 people fled across the border into Turkey. Local authorities struggled to cope with the influx at first, and thousands of refugees were forced to sleep on the streets of the Turkish border town of Suruc. Now camps are being set up to provide shelter and other assistance.
With the borders closed and thousands unable to leave Kobane, VICE News visited one of six refugee camps in the town to find out how refugee families — some sharing tents with up to 14 other people — are coping with leaving their homes and livelihoods behind.

Turkey is now fighting two very different battles at the same time.
Turkish fighter jets have been hitting PKK positions in Iraq for days.
The Kurdish PKK has been fighting for greater autonomy within Turkey for 30 years, and more than 40,000 Turkish and Kurdish soldiers and civilians have died during the struggle.
Between 30 and 40 million Kurds live in adjoining regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria.
Meanwhile, at the same time, Turkey is now also bombing ISIL bases in Syria.
The battles become complicated when you take into account the group at the forefront of the international fight against ISIL is another Kurdish group; the YPG.

Wozniak was placed in cuffs and marched off to a juvenile detention centre after the electronic metronome device he built in twelfth grade was discovered by his school principal ...
