A 2,200-year-old two-story trade building, which was also thought to be used for cold storage, has been found in the Sagalassos ancient city in the Ağlasun district of southern Burdur province.
Belgian Prof. Dr. Jeroen Poblome, head of the Sagalassos archeological research site, told Anadolu Agency that while they expected to find just a regular porch, they found a trade building from the 2nd century B.C. instead.
“We didn’t work on a building from that period. The pieces of this building have been preserved. Hopefully, we will acquire the results about this excavation towards the end of August,” said Poblome, adding the first floor of the building contained shops and merchants preserved their food here.
“Also we assume that tax collection was also done on the first floor. The shops might have been rented by the farmers. However, we haven’t yet scrutinized this part. We predict that important meetings such as the ones about trade were carried out on the second floor of the building. They could watch the view from here as well,” said Poblome.
He said the building was 30 meters high and 15 meters wide.
Poblome also mentioned the building was one of the most important artifacts from that period.
“We will first carve around the surroundings of the building and later dig out the interior and thus acquire more in-depth knowledge about the chronology. We are sure it belongs to the 2nd century B.C., but we are not certain whether it belongs to early, middle or late 2nd century B.C.,” stated Poblome.

Lycia (Lycian: 𐊗𐊕𐊐𐊎𐊆𐊖 Trm̃mis; Greek: Λυκία, Turkish: Likya) was a geopolitical region in Anatolia in what are now the provinces of Antalya and Muğla on the southern coast of Turkey, and Burdur Province inland. Known to history since the records of ancient Egypt and the Hittite Empire in the Late Bronze Age, it was populated by speakers of the Luwian language group. Written records began to be inscribed in stone in the Lycian language (a later form of Luwian) after Lycia's involuntary incorporation into the Achaemenid Empire in the Iron Age. At that time (546 BC) the Luwian speakers were decimated, and Lycia received an influx of Persian speakers.
Lycia fought for the Persians in the Persian Wars, but on the defeat of the Achaemenid Empire by the Greeks, it became intermittently a free agent. After a brief membership in the Athenian Empire, it seceded and became independent (its treaty with Athens had omitted the usual non-secession clause), was under the Persians again, revolted again, was conquered by Mausolus of Caria, returned to the Persians, and went under Macedonian hegemony at the defeat of the Persians by Alexander the Great. Due to the influx of Greek speakers and the sparsity of the remaining Lycian speakers, Lycia was totally Hellenized under the Macedonians. The Lycian language disappeared from inscriptions and coinage.

The ancient Lycians are among the most enigmatic people of antiquity because little historical record has been left behind them. But what has been discovered reveals a fascinating people culturally distinct from the rest of the ancient world at the time. Around twenty major sites remain today with the Lycians' unusual funerary architecture, including incredible rock-cut tombs carved into cliff faces dominating the breathtaking unspoiled land of Lycia.
Lycia is situated in the region which is today the provinces of Antalya and Muğla on the southern coast of Turkey, and the Burdur province, which is further inland. The Lycian civilisation is mentioned in the historical records of ancient Egypt as well as the Hittite Empire. By the 6th century BC, however, the Lycians were incorporated into the Achaemenid Empire. One of the most interesting features of the Lycians is their funerary culture, as seen in the incredible tombs that they built.
There are several types of Lycian tombs, the most common of which is the rock-cut tomb. The earliest examples of these are said to have been carved in the 5th century BC, and can be found in places such as Myra and Amasia. These tombs were carved directly into the rock face, usually into a cliff, which makes them an amazing sight to behold. It is said that the Lycians believed that a mythical winged creature would carry them off into the afterlife, which is the reason for the position of their tombs on cliffs.
Another interesting aspect of these tombs is its reflection of domestic life. The tombs are often carved like the façade of Lycian houses, and usually have one or two levels, but sometimes even three. In addition, the tombs usually held more than one body, most likely of people who were related to each other. Thus, it seems that familial ties and kinship were maintained even after death. Nevertheless, rock-cut tombs are not unique to the Lycians, as similar structures can be found in other parts of the Mediterranean, such as Petra in Jordan and Cyrenaica in Libya.

Two miners working in a chromium mine lost their lives and three more were hospitalized on May 17, after a gas leak in a mine shaft, local officials have announced.
The miners working in the Yeşilova district of the southern province of Burdur, were poisoned by the leak, according to the preliminary investigation, Burdur Governor Hasan Kürklü stated, adding that an investigation was underway into the cause of the tragedy.
Ömer Özcan, 35, and his nephew Engin Özcan, 34, died in the mine due to gas poisoning.
Miners İbrahim Örki and Mustafa Örki were discharged from the intensive care unit on May 18, while another worker Ali İhsan Özcan remained in intensive care.
A total of 15 miners were working in the mine.
Mustafa Örki told reporters that the air conditioning system in the mine was not working when the incident took place.
İbrahim Örki, meanwhile, told reporters in the hospital that the incident took place in an area where equipment was located.
“First the head-miner went there. He did not return so I went to check him. He had fainted. I felt a headache and then fainted. I don’t remember the rest,” said Örki, adding that the air conditioning was not working at that time.
The incident comes just over a year after 301 miners were killed after a fire at a coalmine in the Soma district of western Turkey, the country’s worst ever industrial disaster, which raised new questions about work safety standards.

Turkish police have launched a fresh wave of operations centered in the Mediterranean province of Antalya against the alleged “parallel structure,” detaining six people including former police chiefs and officers.
The Antalya Police Department’s Counterterrorism Branch officers launched operations in five provinces of Antalya, İzmir, Burdur, Şanlıurfa and Batman, early on May 25, targeting alleged sympathizers of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, who they claim heads a “terrorist organization.”
Antalya Police Chief Cemil Tonbul said arrest warrants had been issued for 13 people, six of whom were arrested on May 25 including the former deputy head of the Intelligence Directorate, identified as Mehmet E.
The operations, led by the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, come three days after the police raided 19 provinces in operations centered in the Central Anatolian province of Konya, as part of another “parallel structure” investigation headed by the Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Arrest warrants were issued on May 22 for 66 people including former police chiefs, academics, and businessmen in the Konya-centered probe.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accuse their erstwhile ally Gülen of heading a group that infiltrated state institutions and tried to topple the Turkish government.

A structure that is believed to have been used as an ancient cold storage depot has been unearthed in the ancient city of Sagalassos in the southern province of Burdur’s Ağlasun district.
“A big two-story building was found in the upper agora. We think that it was used as a cold storage depot in the Hellenistic era,” said Professor Jeroen Poblome of Belgian Leuven Catholic University, who is heading the excavations at the site. “Other ancient cities have similar structures, but this is the first in Sagalassos. It is such a big building that excavations may last five years.”
Stating that they were working in eight different spots this year, Poblome said: “We are looking at the early centuries of Sagalassos. We know that Alexander the Great fought here. Sources say that Sagalassos was not a small city. This is why we want to reach early periods of Sagalassos. We are working in the upper agora, believing that the city center was there. We have not so far found anything about Alexander the Great, but Hellenistic-era artifacts are gradually [coming to surface].”
Poblome said the ancient city was home to important buildings and monumental structures from the 2nd century B.C.
Excavations first started at Sagalassos in 1989. This year’s excavations are being conducted with 115 people, 60 of whom are Turks, and will continue until Aug. 31.

ANTALYA
Antalya Province (Turkish: Antalya ili) is located on the Mediterranean coast of south-west Turkey, between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean sea.
Antalya Province is the centre of Turkey's tourism industry, attracting 30% of foreign tourists visiting Turkey. It was the world's third most visited city by number of international arrivals in 2011, displacing New York. Antalya is Turkey's biggest international sea resort. The province of Antalya corresponds to the lands of ancient Pamphylia to the east and Lycia to the west. It features a shoreline of 657 km (408 mi) with beaches, ports, and ancient cities scattered throughout, including the World Heritage Site Xanthos. The provincial capital is Antalya city with a population of 1,001,318.
Antalya is the fastest-growing province in Turkey; with a 4.17% yearly population growth rate between years 1990–2000, compared with the national rate of 1.83%. This growth is due to a fast rate of urbanization, particularly driven by tourism and other service sectors on the coast.
