Hasankeyf (Arabic: حصن كيفا) is small village, an ancient town and district located along the Tigris River in the Batman Province in southeastern Turkey.
It has been settled for perhaps as long as three millennia, though most cliff dwellings are around 2,000 years old.
Hasankeyf is rich in history throughout the ages and aside from the sites below, thousands of caves exist in the cliffs that surround the city.
Many of the caves are multi-storied and have their own water supply.
Churches and mosques were also carved into the cliffs and numerous ancient cemeteries exist throughout the area.

The main archaeological highlight of Hasankeyf is the citadel on the very top of the town, overlooking the river.
Considering how extensive these ruins are, an entire day (or two) could easily be spent exploring.
I met one of the local tourist guides, who insisted to explain everything about his village.
We hiked into the valley and to my astonishment, I was told that what we are walking through right now was all under water 1000s of years ago, that’s why it looks like that.
I felt like being in the womb of a huge whale. The walls where like the shape of Huge tubes as if it’s the throat of a dragon.
I don’t know why I had those kind of thoughts. But watching the video, you will understand what I am talking about.
It kept getting narrower and more slippy and he started to sing, so his voice echoed in the whole place.
I really had the feeling of being into those time machine movies and that i was having a journey back in time!!!

Two Turkish soldiers have been killed in a bomb attack in the southeastern province of Hakkari. The latest deaths come as clashes continue between Turkish forces and militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
The Turkish army said the bomb blast struck an army vehicle in Hakkari’s Semdinli district. Three other soldiers were wounded in the attack. Elsewhere, a policeman was killed and eight others wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in Batman province. This, while clashes between security forces and militants from the PKK in southeast Turkey left 30 militants dead. The Turkish President says Ankara will keep up its fight against the group. The Turkish government launched a major campaign against the militants in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq in July. Turkey says some two-thousand Kurdish militants have been killed in the offensive. 150 Turkish police and soldiers have also died in the PKK attacks within the same period.

The regions declared as security zones are in Hakkari and Batman provinces. Meanwhile, a curfew imposed in the Cizre district of Shirnak province continued into a fifth day. On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged not to abandon Turkey to what he called terrorists. At least 31 Turkish security forces have been killed in a series of attacks blamed on PKK militants since Sunday. On Monday night, Turkish warplanes bombed the PKK positions in northern Iraq, which claimed up to 40 lives. Turkish troops also made an incursion into northern Iraq in pursuit of the militants. Renewed fighting between the Turkish security forces and the PKK has left over 200 people dead on both sides since July.

The names of historic Kurdish figures will be given to a number of schools in the southeastern Turkish province of Batman, Provincial Director of National Education Mehmet Çelik has said.
Çelik said they had initiated the name-changing process for public spaces, geographical areas and buildings six months ago, in an effort to support the Kurdish peace process and end clashes between the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Turkish military.
The Kurdish peace process reached a turning point on Feb. 28, when jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan called on the PKK to convene a conference to discuss laying down arms after decades of conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.
Çelik said they had initiated the project to name schools after prominent Kurdish public figures, such as Said Nursi and Ahmad Xani, and were expecting to see results by the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
“We do not rush in this matter. What is important is that the process follows its natural course. The process is continuing, and when conditions mature the signboards will be hung,” he said.
Nursi (1878-1960) was an important Kurdish religious figure who published many writings in his time and was jailed by the early Turkish republican authorities. He is regarded as the founder of the Nur Society, a religious community that still has many supporters in Turkey. Xani (1650-1707) was a Kurdish writer, poet and philosopher, who was born in modern Turkey’s southeastern province of Hakkari. He is most well-known for the love story in Kurdish called “Mem and Zin” (Mem û Zîn).
Çelik added that some of the names of the high schools had already been changed, such as the Tigris Anatolian High School or the Mesopotamia Vocational Technical High School.

As part of a dam project that will submerge Hasankeyf, a district in Batman province, an official decision was made that will force citizens to evacuate their houses within 30 days after the construction of new houses is completed.
According to a report by Taraf daily, the latest step of the disputed dam project, which will submerge Hasankeyf under the River Tigris that runs through the town's center, was a decision to enforce evacuation. It was also determined that the cheapest government-built housing in the new Hasankeyf settlement that will host the town's displaced citizens would be sold for at least TL 54,000 (around $20,000), a figure that excludes the price of the land on which the building will sit. The government-managed Housing Development Administration (TOKİ) is in charge of the housing project.
A Cabinet decree regarding the transfer of families affected by the Ilısu dam and hydroelectric power plant project was released on May 5 and went immediately into effect.
According to the statement, expulsed families will have to move to their new houses, evacuating their current ones, at the latest 30 days after the day the construction of their houses in the new Hasankeyf settlement is complete. The statement also said that those who do not vacate their houses in the given time will be evacuated by the office of the governor of Batman.
Families will be indebted to government
The Cabinet's decision prescribed the following criteria and schedule for the legitimate ownership of property in the new Hasankeyf:
First, in order to legally claim a house, applicants must qualify as “being a family”. The families should apply 30 days after the release of the Cabinet decree for determination of their qualification of “being a family.”
Families who have real estate located in the field of expropriation should deposit TL 1,000 (around $360) into the account of the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) in order to acquire the right to state housing.
Families who document their residence as Hasankeyf district town-center for at least three years retrospective to April 1, 2013 and who deposit the required amount in the account of DSİ will be taken as legal claimants even if they do not have real estate to be expropriated.
These families will be indebted to the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and will have to pay 15 equal interest-free installments in 15 years, of which the first will be paid on the 60th month following the completion of construction.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has approved an environmental impact report (ÇED) for the construction of a new hydroelectric power plant (HES) on a river in Antalya province where two other HES projects had already been canceled by court order, adding another controversy to the government's lack of environmental sensitivity.
The River Alara, located in the mountainous Gündoğmuş district of Antalya, has seven HES projects lined up for it, along with an Alara dam project. Two of these projects were canceled in 2013 after the Antalya 1st Administrative Court ruled they be halted following a lawsuit filed by locals after the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning prepared a controversial report that stated a ÇED is not necessary. This time, however, the ministry prepared a ÇED that allows the construction of a new hydroelectric plant right beside the area where the two previously planned plants were to be built.
Münip Ermiş, the lawyer representing the locals opposed to the plants, stated that the river will be restricted to a 5,500-meter-long transmission line that will “surely” affect the locals' source of income based on agriculture and livestock along with an “undisputed” destruction of habitat in the river.
The government's insistence on building more than five plants on a natural site has flared up the already existing dispute between the government -- perceived by some as insensitive to the concerns of the populace -- and environmentalists.
Government's previous attitudes already raise environmental concerns
Another project involving a dam, this time in Hasankeyf, a town in Batman province, has already raised concerns over the future of locals living in the 12,000-year-old settlement, who will have to evacuate the town, in addition to environmental concerns over the natural habitat of the River Tigris that runs through Hasankeyf.
Hydroelectric power plant projects have frequently seen opposition, as in the examples of demonstrations held against HES projects in the Munzur Valley of Tunceli province, the Zile district of Tokat province and the Domaniç district of Kütahya province, where the recent death of a construction worker also introduced concerns related to workplace safety. Overall, the people's reactions can be seen as a sign of the government exhibiting an irresponsible attitude to people's demands related to environmental issues.
The government also stirred controversy when the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning recently released ÇEDs for several disputed projects. A ÇED for the construction of a hotel in Antalya province was approved by the ministry in late 2014 resulting in the cutting down of dozens of trees. Likewise, a ÇED was approved for the expansion of a stone quarry owned by a member of the ruling party in February 2015. Demonstrations were held against this ÇED as it reportedly allowed for the felling of 192,000 trees.
The most controversial of all the projects, however, is the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Mersin province, the construction of which began recently. A large number of people demonstrated against the construction of the plant, which is to be followed by the construction of two more nuclear power plants in northern and northwestern Turkey.
Several environmentally crucial issues have led to heavy criticism, including what impact these nuclear power plants will have on locals, how the authorities will manage radioactive waste and what kinds of precautions will be taken in the event of an emergency, among others, given the fact that government officials could not explain the causes of an hours-long power outage which reportedly affected 79 of the country's 81 provinces in late March, and the mismanagement of the Soma and Ermenek mine disasters of 2014 that claimed the lives of hundreds.

Sixteen police officers who were detained on Sunday as part of an investigation into the killing of a Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) employee in the eastern province of Batman in 1998 have been released following their interrogation. Hasankeyf (Arabic: حصن كيفا) is small village, an ancient town and district located along the Tigris River in the Batman Province in southeastern Turkey.
It has been settled for perhaps as long as three millennia, though most cliff dwellings are around 2,000 years old.
Hasankeyf is rich in history throughout the ages and aside from the sites below, thousands of caves exist in the cliffs that surround the city.
Many of the caves are multi-storied and have their own water supply.
Churches and mosques were also carved into the cliffs and numerous ancient cemeteries exist throughout the area.

Considering how extensive these ruins are, an entire day (or two) could easily be spent exploring.
I met one of the local tourist guides, who insisted to explain everything about his village.
We hiked into the valley and to my astonishment, I was told that what we are walking through right now was all under water 1000s of years ago, that’s why it looks like that.
I felt like being in the womb of a huge whale. The walls where like the shape of Huge tubes as if it’s the throat of a dragon.
I don’t know why I had those kind of thoughts. But watching the video, you will understand what I am talking about.
It kept getting narrower and more slippy and he started to sing, so his voice echoed in the whole place.
I really had the feeling of being into those time machine movies and that i was having a journey back in time!!!

The Turkish army said the bomb blast struck an army vehicle in Hakkari’s Semdinli district. Three other soldiers were wounded in the attack. Elsewhere, a policeman was killed and eight others wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in Batman province. This, while clashes between security forces and militants from the PKK in southeast Turkey left 30 militants dead. The Turkish President says Ankara will keep up its fight against the group. The Turkish government launched a major campaign against the militants in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq in July. Turkey says some two-thousand Kurdish militants have been killed in the offensive. 150 Turkish police and soldiers have also died in the PKK attacks within the same period.

The regions declared as security zones are in Hakkari and Batman provinces. Meanwhile, a curfew imposed in the Cizre district of Shirnak province continued into a fifth day. On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged not to abandon Turkey to what he called terrorists. At least 31 Turkish security forces have been killed in a series of attacks blamed on PKK militants since Sunday. On Monday night, Turkish warplanes bombed the PKK positions in northern Iraq, which claimed up to 40 lives. Turkish troops also made an incursion into northern Iraq in pursuit of the militants. Renewed fighting between the Turkish security forces and the PKK has left over 200 people dead on both sides since July.

The names of historic Kurdish figures will be given to a number of schools in the southeastern Turkish province of Batman, Provincial Director of National Education Mehmet Çelik has said.
Çelik said they had initiated the name-changing process for public spaces, geographical areas and buildings six months ago, in an effort to support the Kurdish peace process and end clashes between the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Turkish military.
The Kurdish peace process reached a turning point on Feb. 28, when jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan called on the PKK to convene a conference to discuss laying down arms after decades of conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.
Çelik said they had initiated the project to name schools after prominent Kurdish public figures, such as Said Nursi and Ahmad Xani, and were expecting to see results by the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
“We do not rush in this matter. What is important is that the process follows its natural course. The process is continuing, and when conditions mature the signboards will be hung,” he said.
Nursi (1878-1960) was an important Kurdish religious figure who published many writings in his time and was jailed by the early Turkish republican authorities. He is regarded as the founder of the Nur Society, a religious community that still has many supporters in Turkey. Xani (1650-1707) was a Kurdish writer, poet and philosopher, who was born in modern Turkey’s southeastern province of Hakkari. He is most well-known for the love story in Kurdish called “Mem and Zin” (Mem û Zîn).
Çelik added that some of the names of the high schools had already been changed, such as the Tigris Anatolian High School or the Mesopotamia Vocational Technical High School.

As part of a dam project that will submerge Hasankeyf, a district in Batman province, an official decision was made that will force citizens to evacuate their houses within 30 days after the construction of new houses is completed.
According to a report by Taraf daily, the latest step of the disputed dam project, which will submerge Hasankeyf under the River Tigris that runs through the town's center, was a decision to enforce evacuation. It was also determined that the cheapest government-built housing in the new Hasankeyf settlement that will host the town's displaced citizens would be sold for at least TL 54,000 (around $20,000), a figure that excludes the price of the land on which the building will sit. The government-managed Housing Development Administration (TOKİ) is in charge of the housing project.
A Cabinet decree regarding the transfer of families affected by the Ilısu dam and hydroelectric power plant project was released on May 5 and went immediately into effect.
According to the statement, expulsed families will have to move to their new houses, evacuating their current ones, at the latest 30 days after the day the construction of their houses in the new Hasankeyf settlement is complete. The statement also said that those who do not vacate their houses in the given time will be evacuated by the office of the governor of Batman.
Families will be indebted to government
The Cabinet's decision prescribed the following criteria and schedule for the legitimate ownership of property in the new Hasankeyf:
First, in order to legally claim a house, applicants must qualify as “being a family”. The families should apply 30 days after the release of the Cabinet decree for determination of their qualification of “being a family.”
Families who have real estate located in the field of expropriation should deposit TL 1,000 (around $360) into the account of the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) in order to acquire the right to state housing.
Families who document their residence as Hasankeyf district town-center for at least three years retrospective to April 1, 2013 and who deposit the required amount in the account of DSİ will be taken as legal claimants even if they do not have real estate to be expropriated.
These families will be indebted to the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and will have to pay 15 equal interest-free installments in 15 years, of which the first will be paid on the 60th month following the completion of construction.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has approved an environmental impact report (ÇED) for the construction of a new hydroelectric power plant (HES) on a river in Antalya province where two other HES projects had already been canceled by court order, adding another controversy to the government's lack of environmental sensitivity.
The River Alara, located in the mountainous Gündoğmuş district of Antalya, has seven HES projects lined up for it, along with an Alara dam project. Two of these projects were canceled in 2013 after the Antalya 1st Administrative Court ruled they be halted following a lawsuit filed by locals after the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning prepared a controversial report that stated a ÇED is not necessary. This time, however, the ministry prepared a ÇED that allows the construction of a new hydroelectric plant right beside the area where the two previously planned plants were to be built.
Münip Ermiş, the lawyer representing the locals opposed to the plants, stated that the river will be restricted to a 5,500-meter-long transmission line that will “surely” affect the locals' source of income based on agriculture and livestock along with an “undisputed” destruction of habitat in the river.
The government's insistence on building more than five plants on a natural site has flared up the already existing dispute between the government -- perceived by some as insensitive to the concerns of the populace -- and environmentalists.
Government's previous attitudes already raise environmental concerns
Another project involving a dam, this time in Hasankeyf, a town in Batman province, has already raised concerns over the future of locals living in the 12,000-year-old settlement, who will have to evacuate the town, in addition to environmental concerns over the natural habitat of the River Tigris that runs through Hasankeyf.
Hydroelectric power plant projects have frequently seen opposition, as in the examples of demonstrations held against HES projects in the Munzur Valley of Tunceli province, the Zile district of Tokat province and the Domaniç district of Kütahya province, where the recent death of a construction worker also introduced concerns related to workplace safety. Overall, the people's reactions can be seen as a sign of the government exhibiting an irresponsible attitude to people's demands related to environmental issues.
The government also stirred controversy when the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning recently released ÇEDs for several disputed projects. A ÇED for the construction of a hotel in Antalya province was approved by the ministry in late 2014 resulting in the cutting down of dozens of trees. Likewise, a ÇED was approved for the expansion of a stone quarry owned by a member of the ruling party in February 2015. The most controversial of all the projects, however, is the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Mersin province, the construction of which began recently. Several environmentally crucial issues have led to heavy criticism, including what impact these nuclear power plants will have on locals, how the authorities will manage radioactive waste and what kinds of precautions will be taken in the event of an emergency, among others, given the fact that government officials could not explain the causes of an hours-long power outage which reportedly affected 79 of the country's 81 provinces in late March, and the mismanagement of the Soma and Ermenek mine disasters of 2014 that claimed the lives of hundreds.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has approved an environmental impact report (ÇED) for the construction of a new hydroelectric power plant (HES) on a river in Antalya province where two other HES projects had already been canceled by court order, adding another controversy to the government's lack of environmental sensitivity.
The River Alara, located in the mountainous Gündoğmuş district of Antalya, has seven HES projects lined up for it, along with an Alara dam project. Two of these projects were canceled in 2013 after the Antalya 1st Administrative Court ruled they be halted following a lawsuit filed by locals after the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning prepared a controversial report that stated a ÇED is not necessary. This time, however, the ministry prepared a ÇED that allows the construction of a new hydroelectric plant right beside the area where the two previously planned plants were to be built.
Münip Ermiş, the lawyer representing the locals opposed to the plants, stated that the river will be restricted to a 5,500-meter-long transmission line that will “surely” affect the locals' source of income based on agriculture and livestock along with an “undisputed” destruction of habitat in the river.
The government's insistence on building more than five plants on a natural site has flared up the already existing dispute between the government -- perceived by some as insensitive to the concerns of the populace -- and environmentalists.
Government's previous attitudes already raise environmental concerns
Another project involving a dam, this time in Hasankeyf, a town in Batman province, has already raised concerns over the future of locals living in the 12,000-year-old settlement, who will have to evacuate the town, in addition to environmental concerns over the natural habitat of the River Tigris that runs through Hasankeyf.
Hydroelectric power plant projects have frequently seen opposition, as in the examples of demonstrations held against HES projects in the Munzur Valley of Tunceli province, the Zile district of Tokat province and the Domaniç district of Kütahya province, where the recent death of a construction worker also introduced concerns related to workplace safety. Overall, the people's reactions can be seen as a sign of the government exhibiting an irresponsible attitude to people's demands related to environmental issues.
The government also stirred controversy when the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning recently released ÇEDs for several disputed projects. A ÇED for the construction of a hotel in Antalya province was approved by the ministry in late 2014 resulting in the cutting down of dozens of trees. Likewise, a ÇED was approved for the expansion of a stone quarry owned by a member of the ruling party in February 2015. Demonstrations were held against this ÇED as it reportedly allowed for the felling of 192,000 trees.

Sixteen police officers who were detained on Sunday as part of an investigation into the killing of a Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) employee in the eastern province of Batman in 1998 have been released following their interrogation.
TPAO employee Cezvet Soysal was killed after he was kidnapped in Batman in 1998. His murder has remained unsolved since then.
The police officers, including former police chiefs, were detained in an investigation overseen by İstanbul Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor Fuzuli Aydoğdu. The detentions of the police officers were made based on the testimony of a former police officer who is currently in prison.
The jailed police officer brought forward his allegations on the grounds that the 16 police officers were working at the Batman Police Station in 1998 at the time of Soysal's killing.
There was no other evidence against the police officers in the investigation dossier.
Prosecutor Aydoğdu did not refer any of the police officers to court for arrest after their interrogation. He ruled for the immediate release of the eight police officers while he requested a judicial probation for the remaining eight.
The İstanbul 2nd Penal Court of Peace will take care of the prosecutor's request for judicial probation about those eight police officers.
The unsolved murder of Soysal has been brought to public attention by the pro-government media with attempts to relate the murder to the faith-based Gülen or Hizmet movement.
A controversial book written by the former head of the intelligence unit of the National Police Department, Sabri Uzun, was also included in these allegations.
On many occasions, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who launched a battle against the Gülen movement following the eruption of a graft scandal in December 2013 in which Erdoğan's close circle was implicated, has tried to link the movement with unsolved murders.
In a speech made last year, Erdoğan said members of the movement are “even implicated in unsolved murders.” “You will see more shocking things,” he added.
Erdoğan's statement prompted a quick response from the lawyers of Turkish-Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, who inspired the Gülen movement.
The lawyers termed Erdoğan's statements as slanderous and “far from intelligence and conscience.”
“It has been once again understood that, in the new Turkey, investigations are being carried out at lecterns where political sermons are given or at the pool media [which is created through funds raised by various pro-government businessmen to protect the government's interests] instead of prosecutor's offices. It should not be forgotten that, in the next phase of this situation, verdicts will be given by the presidency, not courts,” the statement of the lawyers said.
Erdoğan, who was then prime minister, framed the corruption investigation as a “plot against his government” by the Gülen movement and foreign collaborators. He has so far failed to prove his claims. He insulted members of the movement numerous times and directed serious accusations at them. He invented the term “parallel structure” to refer to followers of the movement, particularly followers within the state bureaucracy.

A local newspaper published in the southeastern province of Batman has been publishing recipes of yummy dishes on its front page, to protest the increasing pressure against media freedom from vested interests in the area.
Yön Gazetesi, a newspaper published in Turkish in the province populated by a majority of Kurds, has been the subject of nearly 40 lawsuits since it was founded in Sept. 1, 2013.
The paper's staff of seven have repeatedly focused on the flaws of the local administration, criticizing officials from the governor’s office to the province’s university for mismanagement.
“Since starting publication until today, we haven’t made a single news story which wasn’t backed by documents. But almost immediately all of our stories have prompted people to put pressure on us,” Yön editor-in-chief Ferit Tunç told daily Milliyet.
“For example, we criticized the fact that the son of Batman University’s rector, a graduate of botany, was hired to the institution’s IT department, and received pressure. Just think about a university that gathers its committee only to besmirch your newspaper,” he said.
Instead of reading about local news stories, reader's of Yön Gazetesi can now enjoy recipes of great food under sensational headlines such as “How to make an Eli Böğründe dish,” “Yörük Sıkması of Mersin” or “Recipe of Mumbar Dolma.”
Tunç said readers were surprised at first at the idea, but they managed to maintain their modest circulation of 500 after readers embraced the protest.
“They [the authorities] love to eat so we give them recipes. After they understood our protest, they appropriated the newspaper more than before. We will continue our protest until there is a free local media,” Tunç said.
Local media is particularly strong in southeastern Turkey compared to other regions in the country, despite huge pressure against journalists that has frequently resulted in the murder of media workers.
The protest action is a reminder of veteran journalist Çetin Altan’s story on the benefit of beans in protest at media restrictions in the days preceding the 1960 coup.

2015 was a great year for CGI-filled films such as Jurassic World, The Avengers. Age Of Ultron and of course Star Wars. The Force Awakens. One would say "It's not possible to sneak in any more huge-budget films in one year." 2016 laughs. We haven't yet realized how crowded with blockbusters the next year is going to be. I would fear for the indies, but at least they have The Academy ... JANUARY. 22nd. The 5th Wave. 29th ... 12nd ... Batman V Superman ... ....

Yesterday, I said goodbye to my handsome boy Spawn, this year has been quite a roller coaster.. Lots of emotions and lots thresholds crossed. This boy was there for it all.. 8 years worth of memories and ups and downs ... I would immediately smile and say "ok ok you're right" ... I';m going to miss the way you were so protective of Buddy and Batman and never got annoyed with them when they were excited hyper puppies ... 💔👼🏼🕊 ... ... ....
