If you like the Medusa symbolism you must check this shit:
Located in the northwest corner of the cistern, the bases of two columns reuse blocks carved with the visage of Medusa. The origin of the two heads is unknown, though it is thought that the heads were brought to the cistern after being removed from a building of the late Roman period. There is no written evidence that suggests they were used as column pedestals previously. Tradition has it that the blocks are oriented sideways and inverted in order to negate the power of the Gorgons' gaze;[citation needed] however, it is widely thought that one was placed sideways only to be the proper size to support the column. The upside down Medusa was placed that way specifically because she would be the same height right side up
In the 2011 video game, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, the player controlled character, Ezio Auditore, is given the chance to explore a section of this cistern in a memory sequence entitled The Yerebatan Cistern.
The cistern with its inverted Medusa pillar was used prominently in the climax of the new Dan Brown novel Inferno featuring Robert Langdon, where the antagonist planned to make his attack.

Quick Guide 5: Basilica Cistern, Sunken Palace or Yerebatan?
Istanbul has been one of the most frequently besieged cities in the world, and therefore has needed a permanent supply of freshwater through the ages.
Aqueducts carried water to these reservoirs from great distances.
The largest and most ornate of these cisterns is Yerebatan Sarayı (Palace). Columns and capitals of earlier pagan temples were used in its construction, providing a very decorative appearance; thus it is often called “saray” which means “palace” in Turkish.

This subterranean structure was commissioned by Emperor Justinian and built in 532. The largest surviving Byzantine cistern in İstanbul, it was constructed using 336 columns, many of which were salvaged from ruined temples and feature fine carved capitals. Its symmetry and sheer grandeur of conception are quite breathtaking, and its cavernous depths make a great retreat on summer days.
Like most sites in İstanbul, the cistern has an unusual history. It was originally known as the Basilica Cistern because it lay underneath the Stoa Basilica, one of the great squares on the first hill. Designed to service the Great Palace and surrounding buildings, it was able to store up to 80,000 cu metres of water delivered via 20km of aqueducts from a reservoir near the Black Sea, but was closed when the Byzantine emperors relocated from the Great Palace. Forgotten by the city authorities some time before the Conquest, it wasn't rediscovered until 1545, when scholar Petrus Gyllius was researching Byzantine antiquities in the city and was told by local residents that they were able to miraculously obtain water by lowering buckets into a dark space below their basement floors. Some were even catching fish this way. Intrigued, Gyllius explored the neighbourhood and finally accessed the cistern through one of the basements. Even after his discovery, the Ottomans (who referred to the cistern as Yerebatan Saray) didn't treat the so-called Underground Palace with the respect it deserved – it became a dumping ground for all sorts of junk, as well as corpses.
The cistern was cleaned and renovated in 1985 by the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality and opened to the public in 1987. It's now one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. Walking along its raised wooden platforms, you'll feel the water dripping from the vaulted ceiling and see schools of ghostly carp patrolling the water – it certainly has bucketloads (forgive the pun) of atmosphere.

See all of Istanbul in one day (or 1 min 49 secs) on this small group full day tour, with an expert local guide to show you the best secret rooftops and to teach you the history behind Istanbul's top attractions. Check out Walks of Italy's 'Istanbul In A Day' tour here: https://www.walksofturkey.com/istanbul-tours/istanbul-in-a-day-bosphorus-cruise
Your tour starts at the Blue Mosque, Istanbul where you meet your expert local tour guide. They'll lead you inside for a guided tour, where they'll point out the stunning tile work, columns and stained glass windows of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, explaining how locals came to refer to it as the Blue Mosque.
Next up is a Hagia Sophia tour. With pre-reserved tickets you'll skip long lines to get straight inside this beautiful structure. Your Istanbul tour guide will explain to you how how the building was once a church, then a mosque and is now the official Hagia Sophia Museum, also know as the Aya Sofya; demonstrating the power the rulers of the Ottoman Empire held.
Next stop is the Basilica Cistern where you'll once again have privileged access. Your local Istanbul guide will lead you through a special entrance here, past long lines for Basilica Cistern tickets, and straight into its cool, dark interior. Here you'll learn about Constantinople in the time of the Romans and spot eerie underwater Medusa heads (the meaning of which your tour guide will make clear).
You'll take a break for lunch next (included in the price) at an authentic Turkish restaurant, where you'll chow down on kebab meats, salads and local desserts. Then it's on to the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul.
Traveling with a Grand Bazaar guide has its perks, as you'll quickly learn. They'll teach you how to navigate the 61 streets of the bazaar and point out the different shopping areas - giving you tips on bartering with locals. We'll take a special detour after the bazaar to a secret rooftop view, known only to locals, then it's on to the Spice Bazaar for a special pre-organised experience of the local produce; where you can touch, taste and smell teas and spices without the pressure to buy (a rarity in Istanbul's Spice Bazaar!)
The next activity is a Bosphorus cruise by private boat. Traveling the distance between Europe and Asia, your guide will point out top sights like the Bosphorus Bridge, Dolmabahce Palace and countless mosques. With only 30 people MAXIMUM on your boat and an expert Istanbul guide on hand, you'll get so much more from your Bosphorus cruise.
You'll disembark on the other side of the Bosphorus Bridge and walk the beautiful streets of the area up to the Galata Tower. Lines here are long and impossible to skip so we won't go inside, opting instead for yet another of the best rooftops in Istanbul, for stunning views over the Bosphorus and all the city.
This Istanbul in a day tour showcases the top attractions of Istanbul in just one day; with small groups and authentic local Istanbul guides to ensure that you get the most from every precious second.
For more info or to book, check out the tour here: https://www.walksofturkey.com/istanbul-tours/istanbul-in-a-day-bosphorus-cruise

Travel video about destination Istanbul in Turkey.
Istanbul is the golden gateway to the Orient, a city that was once the centre of the Old World and still reflects two and a half centuries of history. Today, this turbulent metropolis on the Bosporus is Europe's connection with Asia Minor.
Today, this link between Europe and Asia has more than 15 million inhabitants and is not only Turkey's largest city, but is also a melting pot of various cultures. Once a Greek colony, Roman Imperial City and capital of the Osman Empire, Istanbul is full of colorful and dramatic history.
The European-style city district on the northern side of the Golden Horn was founded as a trading colony by Genoese traders in 1261. In subsequent centuries, the Europeans dominated the appearance and character of this area whose buildings and main street indicate the city's splendid past.
The Basilica Yerebatan Cistern once provided Constantinople with its water supply. Emperor Justinian I had this subterranean reservoir built. It holds 80,000 cubic metres of water. A forest of more than 300 decorated stone columns support the ceiling and it once served as a backdrop for a James Bond film.
A mighty gate is the entrance to the splendid world of the Turkish sultans, Topkapi Palace, the former centre of power of the Osman Empire. It's like a small town with many exquisite buildings and wonderful parks.
Leonardo Da Vinci's vision of a bridge across the Bosporus was for many years only a dream, but 470 years later, the dream became reality. At a height of 64 metres, two city districts have been united in addition to two continents and the contrasting lifestyles of two completely different worlds.
Istanbul is a melting pot of culture and religion with a captivating allure and an irresistible atmosphere of mystique.

Istanbul travel guide, the capital of two empires and the only city in the world built on 2 continents. Istanbul has been home for byzantium and Ottoman Empire. This video share the historic and interesting places in European side of Istanbul
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61e2cKRLa_o
My trip started from Eminonu seaport, the continued toward Taksim Square ( City Center on the European Side).
then walk along famous Istiklal Avenue where St. Antonio Church and Galata tower , where in between historic tram is still being used .
In SultanAhmet, I went to gullhane park (hunting places for the Sultan) and Sultanahmet park with its lovely fountain. then the Hippodrome , the ancient greek horse and chariot racing place.
From there I visited SultanAhmet Mosque ( famously known as Blue Mosque), and Hagia Sophia( Museum that has been used both as Church and Mosque).
and the Basilica Cistern, the underground water reservoir that well preserved till now.
Detail on the SultanAhmet can be found here :

Explore the three top attractions in Istanbul on this small group tour, with pre-reserved tickets and skip the line access. See the tour here: https://www.walksofturkey.com/istanbul-tours/best-of-istanbul-tours
Your tour starts at the Blue Mosque, where your expert local Istanbul guide leads you inside. Take off your shoes and don your headscarf (the rules for visiting the Blue Mosque) to explore its stunning interior, lined with beautiful tiles, soaring columns and beautiful stained glass windows. Your guide will teach you the history of Sultan Ahmed Mosque, explaining why locals refer to it as the Blue Mosque.
Then it's on to the Hagia Sophia, also known as Ayasofya - once a church, then a mosque and now Istanbul's most impressive museum. Together you'll spot Christian iconography sitting alongside Islamic symbols and learn how the rulers of the time influenced the purpose of this sacred building. Of all the buildings in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia offers perhaps the best insight into the history and culture of Istanbul.
The last stop of the morning is the Basilica Cistern, once a water storage tank for Constantinople, during Roman rule. Here you'll once again benefit from having an Istanbul tour guide on hand. You'll use the guide entrance to enter, passing long lines, to access the fascinating underground, full of medusa heads and carp.
In just one morning, our Best of Istanbul tour introduces you to all the top attractions in Istanbul - without the hassle of waiting in long ticket lines and with an expert local tour guide to enrich your experience.
