The term dwarf planet was adopted in 2006 as part of a three-way categorization of bodies orbiting the Sun, brought about by an increase in discoveries of trans-Neptunian objects that rivaled Pluto in size, and finally precipitated by the discovery of an even more massive object, Eris. This classification states that bodies large enough to have cleared the neighbourhood of their orbit are defined as planets, while those that are not massive enough to be rounded by their own gravity are defined as small Solar System bodies. Dwarf planets come in between. The exclusion of dwarf planets from the roster of planets by the IAU has been both praised and criticized; it was said to be the "right decision" by Mike Brown, who discovered Eris and the other new dwarf planets accepted by the IAU, but has been rejected by Alan Stern, who had coined the term dwarf planet in 1990.

Hi, I’m Jonathan, and this is Brainstuff. If you follow the latest in space gossip, you might have heard about a little rendezvous between a NASA probe called Dawn and an object in space known as the dwarf planet Ceres. This meet-up is exciting news for space fanatics like me, but if you don’t know what Ceres is and at this point you’re too afraid to ask, we are here to lay down the facts you need to know.
Ceres first came to human attention when the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi spied a moving point of light from the Palermo Observatory on New Years’ Day in 1801. Piazzi named this new space-dot after the Roman deity Ceres, the goddess of grain and nutritious food crops.
Today, astronomers classify Ceres as a dwarf planet.
So, you might be wondering: What makes a dwarf planet different from a regular planet, or a comet or an asteroid?
According to the International Astronomical Union, a dwarf planet is any object that meets the following four criteria:
1.) It goes around the sun. That’s a check for Ceres.
2.) It’s not a moon. Another check for Ceres. (Even though they are no moons, Death Stars and other space stations are implicitly disqualified.)
3.) It has attained hydrostatic equilibrium. This means the object has enough mass that over time, the force of gravity has shaped it roughly into a sphere. This would disqualify all those comets and asteroids that are shaped like lumpy potatoes.
4.) It has not, as astronomers say, “cleared the neighborhood” around its orbit. Over time, large bodies like planets tend to eliminate other materials from their orbital zone. This is why objects like Ceres and Pluto aren’t planets: They haven’t cleaned their room. For Ceres, that room is the asteroid belt – frankly, just about the dirtiest room in the solar system, apart from the icy pigsty that is the Kuiper Belt.
So Ceres remains a dwarf planet, but there is by no means anything wrong with being a dwarf planet, because Ceres is fascinating. Here are some quick facts:
Ceres is about 950 kilometers (590 miles) in diameter, meaning if you look at the disc head-on, it’s about the size of Texas. But its total surface area is about 2.8 million square kilometers (1.1 million square miles). That’s about as much total real estate as the country of Argentina.
If you were to take a cross-section of Ceres, you would find a rocky core at the center and a dusty outer crust on the surface, but in between them, a subterranean mantle of water-ice. This layer of water ice has drawn a lot of attention, since anywhere there is water, there’s always the slim possibility that we could discover life.
Scientists sometimes speak of Ceres as a protoplanet or an “embryonic planet.” About four and a half billion years ago, when the planets in our solar system were first forming, Jupiter’s gravity prevented Ceres from becoming a full-fledged planet. This left it frozen in its fetal state -- so there may be a lot we can learn from Ceres about how planets are born in young solar systems.

PLUTO: Today We Will Reach the 'Dwarf Planet' for the First Time In History
www.undergroundworldnews.com
When it comes to landmark achievements in space exploration, tomorrow — July 14 — will be a date for the history books as the day humanity reached Pluto for the first time.
If everything goes according to plan, a NASA spacecraft, called New Horizons, will fly by Pluto at 7:49 am ET. New Horizons is the first spacecraft in history to ever visit Pluto, and it's been a long time coming after 9 years in space.
NASA will stream live countdown coverage of the event starting at 7:30 am, followed by a briefing on the mission from 8:00 to 9:00 am ET.
So, you might have to get up a little earlier than usual, but if you want to celebrate Pluto with the rest of the world, you can by checking out the live feed below.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has a new detailed render of dwarf planet Ceres:
"A new video animation of dwarf planet Ceres, based on images taken by NASA's Dawn spacecraft, provides dramatic flyover views of this heavily cratered, mysterious world. The images come from Dawn's first mapping orbit at Ceres, at an altitude of 8,400 mile (13,600 kilometers), as well as navigational images taken from 3,200 miles (5,100 kilometers) away. The images provided information for a three-dimensional terrain model. The vertical dimension has been exaggerated by a factor of two, and a star field has been added in the background."

The Mysterious Bright Spots on Ceres Create Mini-Atmosphere on Dwarf Planet
The investigation into the dwarf planet Ceres' mysterious bright spots has taken an intriguing new twist.
The famous bright spots at the bottom of Ceres' Occator crater appear to be sublimating material into space, creating a localized atmosphere within the walls of the 57-mile-wide (92 kilometers) hole in the ground, new observations by NASA's Dawn spacecraft suggest.
"If you look at a glancing angle, you can see what seems to be haze, and it comes back in a regular pattern," Dawn principal investigator Christopher Russell, of UCLA, said during a presentation

First, NASA's Dawn probe spotted curiously sparkly bright spots on the surface of Ceres, the dwarf planet that lies in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
http://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/23/us/feat-ceres-pyramid/
Beats us, the scientists said.
Now, cameras on the tractor-trailer-size spacecraft have captured a baffling structure rising 3 miles above the planet's cratered surface.
Conveniently, the thing looks an awful lot like a pyramid.
"Intriguing," the NASA scientists said.
The new image, released Sunday by NASA, was taken June 14 from a distance of about 2,700 miles, the agency said.
It shows what NASA described in its classically understated and totally non-freaked-out tones as "a mountain with steep slopes protruding from a relatively smooth area of the dwarf planet's surface."
To be fair, the agency offered no suggestion that the towering structure is an offering to some long-lost space emperor or home to our new alien overlords.
And, to be even more fair, it's probably just a really tall mountain in a solar system filled with wondrous and strange natural phenomena.
But the Dawn mission has done nothing but stoke imaginations since the discovery of mysterious bright spots on the surface of the dwarf planet in February and the beginning of the probe's orbit in March.

And then there are those enigmatic bright spots pockmarking the surface. Scientists still aren’t sure what the bright spots are, but speculation is centered on the spots being highly reflective ice. Just how that ice ends up on the surface is not yet clear.

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4491
“Dwarf planet Ceres continues to puzzle scientists as NASA's Dawn spacecraft gets closer to being captured into orbit around the object. The latest images from Dawn, taken nearly 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers) from Ceres, reveal that a bright spot that stands out in previous images lies close to yet another bright area.”
