Lake Texoma is one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, the 12th largest Corps of Engineers' (USACE) lake, and the largest in USACE Tulsa District. Lake Texoma is formed by Denison Dam on the Red River in Bryan County, Oklahoma, and Grayson County, Texas, about 726 miles (1,168 km) upstream from the mouth of the river. It is located at the confluence of the Red River and Washita Rivers. The damsite is approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) northwest of Denison, Texas, and 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Durant, Oklahoma. Lake Texoma is the most developed and most popular lake within the USACE Tulsa District, attracting approximately 6 million visitors a year.
Lake Texoma's two main sources are the Red River from the west and Washita River from the north. Other notable sources include Big Mineral Creek, Little Mineral Creek, Buncombe Creek, Rock Creek, and Glasses Creek. Lake Texoma drains into the Red River at the Denison Dam.
Normal elevation of the conservation pool varies from 615 to 619 ft (187 to 189 m) National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD) depending on the time of year. The flood control pool extends to elevation 645 ft (197 m) NGVD. The lake has crested the dam's spillway at a height of 640 ft (195.07 m) three times: once in 1957, again in 1990, and most recently on July 7, 2007. (USACE 2003a). The lake's highest elevation was recorded on May 6, 1990 at 644.76 feet. The top of Denison Dam is at 670 feet.

A huge vortex resembling a water sink hole has appeared in Oklahoma’s Lake Texoma and caused water levels to drop (June 8).
Video just released by the Tulsa division of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) shows the ‘intake vortex’ which they reported to be “8 feet in diameter and capable of sucking in a full-sized boat”.
According to the Lake’s Manager, Joe Custer, the vortex was caused by the huge amount of water being released through two hydropower generators and floodgates.

I will say they have tried to hold back the flood waters but mother nature had different ideas. They are closing the road on the Texas side so one will only be able to see the spillway going around to Oklahoma.

TULSA, OKLAHOMA — U.S. army engineers discovered a vortex earlier this month in Lake Texoma, which lies at the border between Texas and Oklahoma, that they say is causing water levels in the lake to drop.
The Tulsa division of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers says the vortex measures 8 feet (2.4 meters) in diameter and is capable of sucking in a full-sized boat.
When a plug is pulled on a filled bathtub, the drainage creates a vortex. Similarly, when Lake Texoma's floodgates were opened to let out water, this vortex appeared. This is a normal occurrence when water is released from floodgates, say engineers.

The most dynamic and historic overflow to date (3ft over). We have done the best we can to capture some HD video of the historic event. We launched from private property (non Corp) but were advised we were in violation once over the water. I thank the US Army Corp of Engineers for the courtesy and manner in which we were denied further documentation. All park police and Park Rangers were extremely kind considering the massive event unfolding. Their top priority is public safety. I hope these 2 minutes will give you some appreciation of these powerful and turbulent waters as this historic event continues to unfold.

Location: On the Red River at river mile 725.9, 5 miles northwest of Denison in Grayson County, Texas.
Status: Completed
Purpose: Flood control, water supply, hydroelectric power, regulation of Red River flows, improvement of navigation, and recreation.
History of Construction: Construction began in August 1939 and was completed in February 1944. The project was first available to operate for full flood control without any restrictions in January 1944. The first hydroelectric turbine was placed on line in March 1945 and the second in September 1949. Construction of a highway bridge across Lake Texoma at the Willis Ferry site started April 24, 1958, and was completed October 30, 1960. The 5,426-foot-long bridge replaces a former crossing south of Woodville, Oklahoma, on Oklahoma State Highway 99 and Texas State Highway 91. The roadway surface is about 37 feet above the top of the power pool.
Type of Structure: The structure is a rolled earth-filled embankment with a rock-protected upstream slope. The main embankment is 15,200 feet long. The maximum height of the structures is 165 feet above the streambed. A rolled earthfill dike 5,870 feet long and 15 feet high is located in the vicinity of Platter, Oklahoma. The Cumberland levee is 23,480 feet long with a crest elevation of 647.0. Highway 75A crosses the top of the dam.
Spillway & Outlet Works: The uncontrolled spillway is a concrete, gravity, chute-type structure, 2,000 feet long, located in a saddle on the right bank. Spillway capacity at maximum pool (elevation 666.4) is 1,050,000 cubic feet per second. The outlet works consist of three 20-foot-diameter, concrete conduits through the embankment equipped with six 9- by 19-foot vertical lift gates and one emergency gate. Capacity of the outlet works is 67,500 cfs at the top of the flood control pool and 60,120 cfs at the top of the power pool. Limiting channel capacity below Denison Dam is about 60,000 cfs.
Hydrologic Data: The estimated peak discharge for the May through June 1908 flood was 470,000 cfs. The volume was 8,517,000 acre-feet which is equivalent to 4.73 inches of runoff. The peak inflow for the May 1990 flood was 300,000 cfs with a volume of 5,087,000 acre-feet. The peak inflow for the May through June 1987 flood was 315,000 cfs with a volume of 2,879,000 acre-feet. The total volume of inflow for the 1957 flood was 8,364,000 acre-feet.

Lake Texoma Spillway 5/24/2015. The lake is going over about 3 inches and it is raining. This is a flood control lake that is now out of control which means downstream flooding will only get worse.

The Business Insider reports that the area is off-limits and that engineers have marked the area with safety buoys and caution signs to keep people away.
Lake Texoma is formed by the Denison Dam and Red River in Bryan County, Oklahoma, and Grayson County, Texas.

This day we landed 32 "Overs" ( fish over 20 inches) from 6 pounds all the way up to 19 lbs. Fishing the River Channel on a ledge in 60 ft. Fish would come up and feed 25 ft - 40 ft down. We were casting out 3/4 oz Rooster Tails (white/chart) with a 8 inch white bass worm by Culprit - as our trailer- cast out as far out as we could and count to 30 and start reeling it back in. Then all of the sudden it feels like you snagged a tree till it starts peeling drag off your reel.

2.5m wide sinkhole-like vortex appears in Lake Texoma, USA
A huge vortex resembling a water sink hole has appeared in Oklahoma’s Lake Texoma and caused water levels to drop (June 8).
Video just released by the Tulsa division of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) shows the ‘intake vortex’ which they reported to be “8 feet in diameter and capable of sucking in a full-sized boat”.
According to the Lake’s Manager, Joe Custer, the vortex was caused by the huge amount of water being released through two hydropower generators and floodgates.

Giant Intake Vortex - Denison Dam, Lake Texoma - 150605
Here's a very unique view of an intake vortex, created as water enters the Denison Dam spillway on Lake Texoma.
The vortex is approximately 8 feet in diameter and capable of sucking in a full-sized boat, so please heed all safety buoys and caution signs.
ABOUT DENISON DAM & LAKE TEXOMA
Authorization: Flood Control Act approved June 28, 1938, Project Document HD 541, 75th Congress, 3d Session (flood control and power); Public Law 868, 76th Congress, 3d Session, approved October 17, 1940, (improving navigation, regulating flow of Red River, controlling floods, and other beneficial uses); Public Law 454, 78th Congress, 2d Session, approved September 30, 1944, (impoundment designated as Lake Texoma); Public Law 273, 83rd Congress, 1st Session, approved August 14, 1953, (Denison water supply storage); Public Law 164, 84th Congress, 1st Session, approved July 15, 1955, (construction of Willis Site Bridge); Public Law 146, 85th Congress, 1st Session, approved August 14, 1957, Project Document HD 541, 75th Congress, 3d Session, (Sherman water supply); Public Law 282, 91st Congress, 1st Session, approved July 19, 1970, (water supply dam on Big Mineral Arm); Public Law 662, 99th Congress, 2d Session, approved November 17, 1986, (added recreation as a project purpose and authorized reallocation of additional storage for water supply).

I will say they have tried to hold back the flood waters but mother nature had different ideas. They are closing the road on the Texas side so one will only be able to see the spillway going around to Oklahoma.

Huge water vortex draining Lake Texoma in Oklahoma can sink boats - TomoNews
The Business Insider reports that the area is off-limits and that engineers have marked the area with safety buoys and caution signs to keep people away.
Lake Texoma is formed by the Denison Dam and Red River in Bryan County, Oklahoma, and Grayson County, Texas.
