Dr Tilman Ruff is Co-Chair of ICAN and Co-President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. From 2008 to 2010, he served as one of two NGO advisers to the co-chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament. He is an associate professor at the University of Melbourne and an international medical adviser to Australian Red Cross. He provides technical advice on immunization to the WHO, UNICEF, AusAID and vaccine manufacturers.

Dr Rebecca Johnson is Co-Chair of ICAN and Executive Director of the London-based Acronym Institute for Disarmament and Diplomacy. A former senior adviser to the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission and vice-chair of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, she is also Vice-President of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the United Kingdom and a special adviser to the Nobel Women’s Initiative.

Thomas Nash is Director of Article 36, a UK-based non-government organization doing research, policy and advocacy on the humanitarian impact of different types of weapons. He is joint Coordinator of the International Network on Explosive Weapons and serves on the leadership bodies of ICAN and the International Action Network on Small Arms. As Coordinator of the Cluster Munition Coalition from 2004 to 2011, Mr Nash led the global campaign resulting in the Convention on Cluster Munitions. He previously worked for the New Zealand and Canadian foreign ministries in Geneva and Ottawa.

Beatrice Fihn is Project Manager for the Reaching Critical Will project of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, designed to increase the quality and quantity of civil society preparation and participation in UN disarmament processes. Ms Fihn monitors and analyses the Non-Proliferation Treaty review meetings, the Conference on Disarmament, the UN General Assembly First Committee, and the Arms Trade Treaty. She has written extensively on disarmament processes, civil society engagement and the relevance of a gender perspective in the area of disarmament.

Susi Snyder is the Nuclear Disarmament Programme Leader for IKV Pax Christi in the Netherlands. Previously, she served as the Secretary General of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, where she monitored various issues under the aegis of the United Nations, including sustainable development, human rights and disarmament. She has spoken at more than 40 US governmental hearings regarding nuclear weapons, power and waste. Since 2011, she has co-authored two publications on NATO nuclear policy, Withdrawal Issues and Exit Strategies.

Dr Robert Mtonga serves as an expert adviser on numerous international boards and is a member of organizations involved in the areas of the prevention and banning of landmines and other ordnances in Africa, as well as the control of small arms and weaponry. Since he founded the Zambia Campaign to Ban Landmines in 1996, Dr Mtonga has extensively engaged with governments throughout Africa on the landmine issue. He has been a consultant to many international organizations documenting injuries from violence and speaks and writes widely on health, development, violence and war prevention issues from a public health perspective.

Tim Wright is the Australian Director of ICAN. He coordinated the campaign’s activities leading up to and during the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in 2010. His recent publications include Catastrophic Humanitarian Harm, Towards a Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapons, Don’t Bank on the Bomb and Learn Peace (an activity book for school students). He formerly worked as an adviser to Australian Democrats leader Senator Lyn Allison and interned for US Congressman Dennis Kucinich. He has degrees in arts and law from the University of Melbourne.

Akira Kawasaki is Co-Chair of ICAN, an Executive Committee member of the Japanese NGO Peace Boat, and a Global Council member of Abolition 2000. From 2008 to 2010, he served as an NGO adviser to the co-chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament. He works closely with survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
