There's a small stretch of soil north of the Rio Grande river that's still part of the United States, but exists below the Mexican border wall. The Atlantic went inside this no-man’s-land to uncover what life is like in a place that feels like not-quite America, but not-quite Mexico.
In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites.
I look at the 3 enclaves countries of the world: Vatican City, San Marino and Lesotho. As well as Campione d'Italia, an Italian exclave which is an enclave of Switzerland.
I then take things up a notch and look at enclaves within enclaves. The town of Baarle which is in the Netherlands and Belgium is an incredibly complicated border. But not quite as much as the Cooch Behar region of India and Bangladesh.
This is followed by a look at the odd situation of Bir Tawil, the only unclaimed land on Earth outside of Antarctica (which is itself a place for complex borders!)
I finish off the video by looking at the island of Cyprus, which may look like a borderless island, but is in fact far from it!

Ever wondered why Michigan has two pieces? How about why Alaska isn't connected to the rest of the United States?
The state borders are a lot weirder than they first appear, and often simple river borders will have crazy zig-zags that seem to arbitrarily cross the river.
When rivers shape, borders don't, leaving states with strange pieces on the wrong side of the river.
Some states like Oklahoma and West Virgina have bizarre panhandles, and Kentucky even has a part cut off my Missouri. Its a strange border situation called an exclave, which is when a part of a the state is only reachable by land through other states or countries.
Virginia also has the eastern shore which is strangley is on the other side of the Chesapeake bay.
Other bizarre borders include New York and New Jersey, where Liberty island and Ellis island are weirdly part of New York but are surrounded by New Jersey waters. Even stranger is that New York only owns a small peice of ellis island. The island was expanded, but the new land was over New Jersey borders, so it stayed new jersey. Leaving New York with a bizzare enclave on an new jersey island.
Onother weird border is that Delaware has some land on New Jersey's side of the Delaware river. This strange situation is because inside Delaware's 12 mile circle, the border is the high water mark of the river, so when the river was filled in the new land became Delaware.

(14 Dec 2016) There's been a rise in migrants and refugees trying to make their way through Greece's border regions, a year after an uncontrolled influx saw more than a million refugees and economic migrants trudge through the debt-hobbled country on their way to Europe's prosperous heartland.
Local authorities say it's because restrictive measures imposed in March to curb new arrivals on the Greek islands - where the vast majority of migrants make their first landfall from Turkey - don't apply to people caught on the land border.
That allows anyone entering here to jump the queue for refugee relocation to other European countries, and could even spare economic migrants from deportation under this year's European Union-Turkey deal.
And, although the land route involves crossing a broad river, the discomfort pales when compared to the often deadly sea journey to the islands.
Many migrants have made the attempt to cross the Evros river, which runs along most of the 180-kilometre border, but were caught.
Dozens were seen in the yard of the Fylakio detention centre during recreation time.
A total 169 migrants are being held at the Fylakio centre.
A group of Pakistani men waved or made gestures from inside the facility's fence, while others held up handwritten signs on pieces of cardboard.
Official figures on land arrivals are incomplete, to say the least, because they only include people caught with the smugglers they pay to ferry them over the Evros river.
No data are made public on those who make their own way in, and then hand themselves over to police to start their lengthy asylum application process.
But even these numbers are higher than earlier this year, or even last year's.
Some 655 people, mostly Syrians, were arrested with 33 smugglers in October, double the figure for September.
Panagiotis Ageladarakis, mayor of the border Amorio village, said villagers have become accustomed to migrants walking through their village.
Under the March EU-Turkey deal, which, combined with Balkan border closures, slowed the migratory influx to a trickle, migrants arriving on the islands must stay there until they are either granted asylum with a view to relocation in the EU or deported back to Turkey.
Conditions on the island camps are dismal due to severe overcrowding, delays in the asylum process and tension among ethnic groups, or with tourism-reliant Greeks angry at their islands being turned into open prisons.
A police official said that authorities had been deterring migrants by driving patrol cars to the Greek side of the river when they see a group of migrants about to cross, or by calling Turkish officials to pick them up.
That's nearly three times the number deterred on the average summer month, even though low water levels make the crossing much easier then.
Police say migrants pay Turkish smuggling gangs an average 2,000-2,200 euros each to be taken over the river, and then driven in small lorries to the northern city of Thessaloniki, or Athens, the Greek capital, nearly 1,000 kilometres to the southwest.
From there, they either apply for relocation or pay other smugglers to get them through the sealed Balkan borders, or, for a higher fee, a forged passport that could allow them to travel on by plane.
People who make their own way over seek temporary shelter, like the old warehouse near the Didymoteicho train station, where they board trains for the main cities.
Paschalis Siritoudis, police chief in the nearby town of Orestiada, said people from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia or Myanmar are automatically treated as refugees and given documents that allow them to join the lengthy relocation process.

In June of 2010, a 15-year-old, unarmed Mexican citizen named Sergio Hernandez Guereca was shot and killed by an agent of the U.S. Border Patrol. The shooting happened in the riverbed of the Rio Grande, which, between the cities of Juarez and El Paso, consists of a mostly dry, concrete culvert. The U.S.-Mexico border runs, unmarked, down the middle of the river, and when the shooting happened, Hernandez was in Mexico, but the agent who shot him was standing in the U.S.
When Hernandez’s family sued for damages, two American courts threw out their claim on the grounds that Mexican citizens on Mexican soil were not protected by the U.S. constitution. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments last week.
If the court decides in the Hernandez family’s favor, it could expand the reach of the U.S. Constitution — and it could also subject the Border Patrol to a new level of scrutiny.

In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites. I look at the 3 enclaves countries of the world: Vatican City, San Marino and Lesotho. As well as Campione d'Italia, an Italian exclave which is an enclave of Switzerland. I then take things up a notch and look at enclaves within enclaves. The town of Baarle which is in the Netherlands and Belgium is an incredibly complicated border. But not quite as much as the Cooch Behar region of India and Bangladesh. This is followed by a look at the odd situation of Bir Tawil, the only unclaimed land on Earth outside of Antarctica (which is itself a place for complex borders!) Ever wondered why Michigan has two pieces? How about why Alaska isn't connected to the rest of the United States? The state borders are a lot weirder than they first appear, and often simple river borders will have crazy zig-zags that seem to arbitrarily cross the river. When rivers shape, borders don't, leaving states with strange pieces on the wrong side of the river. Some states like Oklahoma and West Virgina have bizarre panhandles, and Kentucky even has a part cut off my Missouri. Its a strange border situation called an exclave, which is when a part of a the state is only reachable by land through other states or countries. Virginia also has the eastern shore which is strangley is on the other side of the Chesapeake bay. Other bizarre borders include New York and New Jersey, ...

(14 Dec 2016) There's been a rise in migrants and refugees trying to make their way through Greece's border regions, a year after an uncontrolled influx saw more than a million refugees and economic migrants trudge through the debt-hobbled country on their way to Europe's prosperous heartland. Local authorities say it's because restrictive measures imposed in March to curb new arrivals on the Greek islands - where the vast majority of migrants make their first landfall from Turkey - don't apply to people caught on the land border. In June of 2010, a 15-year-old, unarmed Mexican citizen named Sergio Hernandez Guereca was shot and killed by an agent of the U.S. Border Patrol. In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites.

Even stranger is that New York only owns a small peice of ellis island. The island was expanded, but the new land was over New Jersey borders, so it stayed new jersey. Leaving New York with a bizzare enclave on an new jersey island.
Onother weird border is that Delaware has some land on New Jersey's side of the Delaware river. This strange situation is because inside Delaware's 12 mile circle, the border is the high water mark of the river, so when the river was filled in the new land became Delaware.

Local authorities say it's because restrictive measures imposed in March to curb new arrivals on the Greek islands - where the vast majority of migrants make their first landfall from Turkey - don't apply to people caught on the land border.
That allows anyone entering here to jump the queue for refugee relocation to other European countries, and could even spare economic migrants from deportation under this year's European Union-Turkey deal.
And, although the land route involves crossing a broad river, the discomfort pales when compared to the often deadly sea journey to the islands.
Many migrants have made the attempt to cross the Evros river, which runs along most of the 180-kilometre border, but were caught.
Dozens were seen in the yard of the Fylakio detention centre during recreation time.
A total 169 migrants are being held at the Fylakio centre.
A group of Pakistani men waved or made gestures from inside the facility's fence, while others held up handwritten signs on pieces of cardboard.
Official figures on land arrivals are incomplete, to say the least, because they only include people caught with the smugglers they pay to ferry them over the Evros river.
No data are made public on those who make their own way in, and then hand themselves over to police to start their lengthy asylum application process.
But even these numbers are higher than earlier this year, or even last year's.
Some 655 people, mostly Syrians, were arrested with 33 smugglers in October, double the figure for September.
Panagiotis Ageladarakis, mayor of the border Amorio village, said villagers have become accustomed to migrants walking through their village.
Under the March EU-Turkey deal, which, combined with Balkan border closures, slowed the migratory influx to a trickle, migrants arriving on the islands must stay there until they are either granted asylum with a view to relocation in the EU or deported back to Turkey.
Conditions on the island camps are dismal due to severe overcrowding, delays in the asylum process and tension among ethnic groups, or with tourism-reliant Greeks angry at their islands being turned into open prisons.
A police official said that authorities had been deterring migrants by driving patrol cars to the Greek side of the river when they see a group of migrants about to cross, or by calling Turkish officials to pick them up.
That's nearly three times the number deterred on the average summer month, even though low water levels make the crossing much easier then.
Police say migrants pay Turkish smuggling gangs an average 2,000-2,200 euros each to be taken over the river, and then driven in small lorries to the northern city of Thessaloniki, or Athens, the Greek capital, nearly 1,000 kilometres to the southwest.
From there, they either apply for relocation or pay other smugglers to get them through the sealed Balkan borders, or, for a higher fee, a forged passport that could allow them to travel on by plane.
People who make their own way over seek temporary shelter, like the old warehouse near the Didymoteicho train station, where they board trains for the main cities.
Paschalis Siritoudis, police chief in the nearby town of Orestiada, said people from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia or Myanmar are automatically treated as refugees and given documents that allow them to join the lengthy relocation process.

In June of 2010, a 15-year-old, unarmed Mexican citizen named Sergio Hernandez Guereca was shot and killed by an agent of the U.S. Border Patrol. The shooting happened in the riverbed of the Rio Grande, which, between the cities of Juarez and El Paso, consists of a mostly dry, concrete culvert. The U.S.-Mexico border runs, unmarked, down the middle of the river, and when the shooting happened, Hernandez was in Mexico, but the agent who shot him was standing in the U.S.
When Hernandez’s family sued for damages, two American courts threw out their claim on the grounds that Mexican citizens on Mexican soil were not protected by the U.S. constitution. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments last week.
If the court decides in the Hernandez family’s favor, it could expand the reach of the U.S. Constitution — and it could also subject the Border Patrol to a new level of scrutiny.

In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites. I look at the 3 enclaves countries of the world: Vatican City, San Marino and Lesotho. As well as Campione d'Italia, an Italian exclave which is an enclave of Switzerland. I then take things up a notch and look at enclaves within enclaves. The town of Baarle which is in the Netherlands and Belgium is an incredibly complicated border. But not quite as much as the Cooch Behar region of India and Bangladesh. This is followed by a look at the odd situation of Bir Tawil, the only unclaimed land on Earth outside of Antarctica (which is itself a place for complex borders!) Weird Borders: State Borders of the United States of America
Ever wondered why Michigan has two pieces? How about why Alaska isn't connected to the rest of the United States? The state borders are a lot weirder than they first appear, and often simple river borders will have crazy zig-zags that seem to arbitrarily cross the river. When rivers shape, borders don't, leaving states with strange pieces on the wrong side of the river. Some states like Oklahoma and West Virgina have bizarre panhandles, and Kentucky even has a part cut off my Missouri. Its a strange border situation called an exclave, which is when a part of a the state is only reachable by land through other states or countries. Migrants choose Turkey-Greece land border
(14 Dec 2016) There's been a rise in migrants and refugees trying to make their way through Greece's border regions, a year after an uncontrolled influx saw more than a million refugees and economic migrants trudge through the debt-hobbled country on their way to Europe's prosperous heartland. Local authorities say it's because restrictive measures imposed in March to curb new arrivals on the Greek islands - where the vast majority of migrants make their first landfall from Turkey - don't apply to people caught on the land border. Onother weird border is that Delaware has some land on New Jersey's side of the Delaware river. This strange situation is because inside Delaware's 12 mile circle, the border is the high water mark of the river, so when the river was filled in the new land became Delaware.

Local authorities say it's because restrictive measures imposed in March to curb new arrivals on the Greek islands - where the vast majority of migrants make their first landfall from Turkey - don't apply to people caught on the land border.
That allows anyone entering here to jump the queue for refugee relocation to other European countries, and could even spare economic migrants from deportation under this year's European Union-Turkey deal.
And, although the land route involves crossing a broad river, the discomfort pales when compared to the often deadly sea journey to the islands.
Many migrants have made the attempt to cross the Evros river, which runs along most of the 180-kilometre border, but were caught.
Dozens were seen in the yard of the Fylakio detention centre during recreation time.
A total 169 migrants are being held at the Fylakio centre.
A group of Pakistani men waved or made gestures from inside the facility's fence, while others held up handwritten signs on pieces of cardboard.
Official figures on land arrivals are incomplete, to say the least, because they only include people caught with the smugglers they pay to ferry them over the Evros river.
No data are made public on those who make their own way in, and then hand themselves over to police to start their lengthy asylum application process.
But even these numbers are higher than earlier this year, or even last year's.
Some 655 people, mostly Syrians, were arrested with 33 smugglers in October, double the figure for September.
Panagiotis Ageladarakis, mayor of the border Amorio village, said villagers have become accustomed to migrants walking through their village.
Under the March EU-Turkey deal, which, combined with Balkan border closures, slowed the migratory influx to a trickle, migrants arriving on the islands must stay there until they are either granted asylum with a view to relocation in the EU or deported back to Turkey.
Conditions on the island camps are dismal due to severe overcrowding, delays in the asylum process and tension among ethnic groups, or with tourism-reliant Greeks angry at their islands being turned into open prisons.
A police official said that authorities had been deterring migrants by driving patrol cars to the Greek side of the river when they see a group of migrants about to cross, or by calling Turkish officials to pick them up.
That's nearly three times the number deterred on the average summer month, even though low water levels make the crossing much easier then.
Police say migrants pay Turkish smuggling gangs an average 2,000-2,200 euros each to be taken over the river, and then driven in small lorries to the northern city of Thessaloniki, or Athens, the Greek capital, nearly 1,000 kilometres to the southwest.
From there, they either apply for relocation or pay other smugglers to get them through the sealed Balkan borders, or, for a higher fee, a forged passport that could allow them to travel on by plane.
People who make their own way over seek temporary shelter, like the old warehouse near the Didymoteicho train station, where they board trains for the main cities.
Paschalis Siritoudis, police chief in the nearby town of Orestiada, said people from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia or Myanmar are automatically treated as refugees and given documents that allow them to join the lengthy relocation process.

A group of Pakistani men waved or made gestures from inside the facility's fence, while others held up handwritten signs on pieces of cardboard.
Official figures on land arrivals are incomplete, to say the least, because they only include people caught with the smugglers they pay to ferry them over the Evros river.
No data are made public on those who make their own way in, and then hand themselves over to police to start their lengthy asylum application process.
But even these numbers are higher than earlier this year, or even last year's.
Some 655 people, mostly Syrians, were arrested with 33 smugglers in October, double the figure for September.
Panagiotis Ageladarakis, mayor of the border Amorio village, said villagers have become accustomed to migrants walking through their village.
Under the March EU-Turkey deal, which, combined with Balkan border closures, slowed the migratory influx to a trickle, migrants arriving on the islands must stay there until they are either granted asylum with a view to relocation in the EU or deported back to Turkey.
Conditions on the island camps are dismal due to severe overcrowding, delays in the asylum process and tension among ethnic groups, or with tourism-reliant Greeks angry at their islands being turned into open prisons.
A police official said that authorities had been deterring migrants by driving patrol cars to the Greek side of the river when they see a group of migrants about to cross, or by calling Turkish officials to pick them up.
That's nearly three times the number deterred on the average summer month, even though low water levels make the crossing much easier then.
Police say migrants pay Turkish smuggling gangs an average 2,000-2,200 euros each to be taken over the river, and then driven in small lorries to the northern city of Thessaloniki, or Athens, the Greek capital, nearly 1,000 kilometres to the southwest.
From there, they either apply for relocation or pay other smugglers to get them through the sealed Balkan borders, or, for a higher fee, a forged passport that could allow them to travel on by plane.
People who make their own way over seek temporary shelter, like the old warehouse near the Didymoteicho train station, where they board trains for the main cities.
Paschalis Siritoudis, police chief in the nearby town of Orestiada, said people from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia or Myanmar are automatically treated as refugees and given documents that allow them to join the lengthy relocation process.

In June of 2010, a 15-year-old, unarmed Mexican citizen named Sergio Hernandez Guereca was shot and killed by an agent of the U.S. Border Patrol. Update: 2015 was the deadliest year on record for migrants and refugees attempting to get into Europe. Over 3,700 people died - the majority on sea crossings between Libya and Italy or Turkey and Greece.
Almost ten years ago, when the film first aired, the number of migrant deaths on Spanish territory had reached its peak. The world's media only started to take notice when the drowned bodies of African migrants began washing ashore on the tourist beaches of the Spanish Canary islands.
Spain's response was to stiffen its border security, but despite all the effort and expense spent on beefing up its borders, migration is on the rise.
Migrants, hoping to be among the lucky few to reach the other side, have often rushed the border fence - sometimes with tragic consequences. On one occasion in Ceuta in 2014, at least 14 African migrants drowned when trying to swim their way from Morocco to Spain.
Those who made it alive were deported back to Morocco, on the other side of the wall.
Today this no longer an issue isolated in a faraway Spanish enclave. The number of people hoping to reach Europe has swelled by a huge wave of refugees from wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Thousands of people are testing Europe's borders, by the sea from Libya to Italy, and from Turkey to Greece, and then continuing over land to Europe's more affluent countries.
In response Europe is building more walls. Today there are five existing fences across the continent, with at least another six either in construction or scheduled.
Most of these walls separate EU nations from countries outside the European Union, but some fences are planned between member states - a move that's against the spirit of the EU, according to the EU's foreign policy chief.
"Europe was built on the idea that walls have to come down. It was built on the idea of coming together. Of overcoming differences. Of united. Walls are never the solution," said Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative, Foreign Affairs.
Without a political solution in sight, migrants and refugees remain undeterred, taking on increasingly dangerous routes into Europe.
