Bulgariai/bʌlˈɡɛəriə/ (Bulgarian: България, IPA: [bɤ̞ɫˈɡarijɐ]), is a country located in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and the Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south and the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres (42,855 sq mi), Bulgaria is Europe's 14th-largest country. Its location has made it a historical crossroad for various civilisations and as such it is the home of some of the earliest metalworking, religious and other cultural artifacts in the world.
Prehistoric cultures began developing on Bulgarian lands during the Neolithic period. Its ancient history was marked by the presence of the Thracians, and later by the Greeks and Romans. The emergence of a unified Bulgarian ethnicity and state dates back to the First Bulgarian Empire, which dominated most of the Balkans and functioned as a cultural hub for Slavic peoples during the Middle Ages. With the downfall of the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1396, its territories came under Ottoman rule for nearly five hundred years. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 resulted in the Third Bulgarian State, recognised in 1908. The following years saw several conflicts with its neighbours, which prompted Bulgaria to align with Germany in both World Wars. In 1946 it became a Communist republic with a single-party system until 1989, when the Communist Party allowed multi-party elections. After 1990 Bulgaria transitioned to democracy and a market-based economy.

Once Thracians settled in the city followed by Romans, Goths, Huns and Ottomans. In the fourteenth century the city was named after its patron saint, the Goddess Of Wisdom. Vidin is dominated by the Baba Vida Fortress whose impressive towers and bastion date back to the thirteenth century. From the banks of the Danube the north western entrances to the mediaeval realm were strictly controlled and the fortress protected it from invasion by ship. Varna is the biggest city on the Black Sea coast and is one of Europe’s oldest cities. The golden, shining domes of the impressive cathedral in the city centre are one of its main landmarks. The caves of western Rhodopes are the main destination for many of the region’s visitors, such as the Jagodina Cave that is ten kilometres long and extends up to five levels within the limestone mountains. It is the longest and deepest of the Rhodopes and its tunnels and huge galleries feature traces of prehistoric inhabitants. Bulgaria – on the border of both Occident and Orient - a country full of history and natural beauty with authentic culture and overwhelming hospitality. A colourful mixture of fascinating tribes with a large variety of tradition and, according to legend, a part of paradise that God gifted to the Bulgarian people!

Sometimes when you travel somewhere you don't need to spend a lot of time in that particular city and/or country to form distinct memories and impressions. For us, our brief four day stay in Sofia, Bulgaria certainly fit the bill. From amazing local cuisine to street performances, we tried our best to see and do as much as we possibly could in short period of time. The following is a travel video we've put together highlighting the top attractions and things to do in Sofia, Bulgaria:
1) Our first day in Sofia we hit the ground taking in many street performances, getting caught up in a football mob / rally, visiting major landmarks and eating street food. These are our first impressions of Sofia.
2) Already impressed by Bulgarian street food, we decided to treat ourselves to a sit down meal to further sample Bulgarian cuisine. At Lubimoto we feasted on Chushki Burek (stuffed red peppers with feta cheese) and Bulgarian pork loin with potatoes, cheese and gravy. Both were delicious!
3) Wanting to indulge our taste buds further we visited the ever popular Made In Home restaurant where we sampled Rakia and goat cheese salad.
4) On our last day in Sofia we tried to cover parts of the city we didn't get to visit on previous days. Some of the highlights included checking out Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and witnessing more street performances. Those Bulgarian break dancers really do have all the moves!
This is part of our Travel in Bulgaria series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Bulgarian culture, Bulgarian arts, Bulgarian foods, Bulgarian religion and Bulgarian people.

Varna is called the most beautiful city of the Black Sea. Recently, more than hundred of its historical buildings were renovated. The city is full of Museums and monuments, most important of all is the roman termas and the memorial park of the battle of Varna. The monument cities of Nesebar and Sozopol are giving us a unique sight with their half rock, half tree houses and byzantin temples. Balchik, Albena and Burgas are all protecting their memories of thrakian, greek, roman and byzantian times. The folksy restaurants are offering us the proper falvours of the Balkan peninsula. Along the roads old monasteries and ancient graves await those who are interested in history. The 378 long, sandy coast of the Black Sea is a paradise for yachting and watersports, where the beach life lasts from spring to autumn

Travel video about destination Sofia in Bulgaria.
Sofia, the ‘wise woman’, has since 1879 been the capital of the new Bulgaria and is a city whose roots date back to the fifth century B.C. Once Thracians settled in the city followed by Romans, Goths, Huns and Ottomans. In the fourteenth century the city was named after its patron saint, the Goddess Of Wisdom. Today’s Sofia originated at the end of the nineteenth century. At that time the city’s appearance changed from one of Oriental, to European, when Neo-classical buildings and tall civic houses replaced the low-built Ottoman constructions as well as Communist building megalomania! Sofia is a popular city and knows how to captivate its visitors. Its historic city centre features the most splendid sacred building in the Balkan Peninsula of the twentieth century, the Aleksandâr Nevski Cathedral, a huge structure that dominates the highest point of the city. At the entrance to the president’s palace, the changing of the guards ceremony is a popular attraction. Dressed in red-white parade uniforms with lace jackets and feathered hats that date back to the nineteenth century, the soldiers goose-step a pre-determined route. The transformation of Sofia into a lively, cosmopolitan capital has succeeded well with history and tradition still very much in evidence. Young, modern and exciting with all the flair of the mystical Balkans!

Belonging to India’s ancient tribes, they bear witness to the science behind the changes that affect their day to day life. Living in diverse climatic regions – the mountains of Nagaland, the grasslands of Kutch, the Gangetic delta and the forests of Central India – they use this challenge as a part of their art with nature. Panel discussion "United Through Adversity"
Panel discussion "United Through Adversity"
The current political climate has had a growing impact on artistic and institutional freedoms. In this situation it is important that art practitioners from Eastern Europe and Russia, drawing on accumulated experience from our shared socialist past, work together to examine the common “enemies” we share today. Are there new models and strategies of cultural production, collective work, and collaboration that we can recognize as effective? Expanding on one of the “lessons” from the exhibition, The potential for uniting through adversity, the curators, together with some of the participant artists, will share their perspectives.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday called for more protection for refugees and migrants after learning of latest loss of lives in the Mediterranean and Europe.
According to Libya's Red Crescent humanitarian organization, at least 105 migrants drowned in the Mediterranean when their boat capsized on the way to Europe on Friday. The rescuers had to break the ship's deck to reach the people trapped inside. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says some 100 people were rescued.
Sea levels are rising around the world and the latest satellite data suggests that a meter or more rise is unavoidable in the next 100-200 years, said NASA scientists. Low-lying cities such as Singapore and Tokyo are at risk of disappearing due to the rising sea levels.
Tainan City in S. Taiwan has seen 2,152 cases of dengue fever and daily reports of new cases once soared to 100, making this summer the highest concentration of the disease on the island.
About 50 dead bodies were discovered Wednesday on an overcrowded migrant boat in the Mediterranean, the Italian coastguard said.
NATO conducted its biggest airborne drill since the end of the Cold War, in the Smardan military base, on Wednesday. The drills are taking place from August 17 to September 13, in Bulgaria, Italy and Germany as well as Romania.
Time-lapse footage recorded on Tuesday showed a huge dust storm approach and envelope Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona, US.
China and Russia are continuing the active phase of their naval drills in the Sea of Japan and the Peter the Great Gulf. The Joint Sea 2015 II drills involve 22 vessels, 20 aircraft, 40 armored vehicles and 500 marines from both countries.
The United States says it will deploy F-22 fighter jets to Europe as part of a broader effort to support eastern European members of NATO against Russia.
Tropical Storm Erika is slamming the Caribbean hard, bringing dangerous flash flooding to Dominica.
At least 71 bodies of migrants were found in an abandoned truck in Austria. Police found travel documents suggesting at least some were refugees fleeing the fighting in Syria.

Earth, also known as the world, Terra,or Gaia, is the third planet from the Sun, the densest planet in the Solar System, the largest of the Solar System's four terrestrial planets, and the only celestial body known to accommodate life. It is home to about 8.74 million species. There are over 7.1 billions of humans who depend upon its biosphere and minerals. The Earth's human population is divided among about two hundred independent states that interact through diplomacy, conflict, travel, trade, and media.
According to evidence from sources such as radiometric dating, Earth was formed around four and a half billion years ago. Within its first billion years,[34] life appeared in its oceans and began to affect its atmosphere and surface, promoting the proliferation of aerobic as well as anaerobic organisms and causing the formation of the atmosphere's ozone layer. This layer and Earth's magnetic field block the most life-threatening parts of the Sun's radiation, so life was able to flourish on land as well as in water. Since then, Earth's position in the Solar System, its physical properties and its geological history have allowed life to persist.
Earth's lithosphere is divided into several rigid segments, or tectonic plates, that migrate across the surface over periods of many millions of years. Over 70% percent of Earth's surface is covered with water, with the remainder consisting of continents and islands which together have many lakes and other sources of water that contribute to the hydrosphere. Earth's poles are mostly covered with ice that is the solid ice of the Antarctic ice sheet and the sea ice that is the polar ice packs. The planet's interior remains active, with a solid iron inner core, a liquid outer core that generates the magnetic field, and a thick layer of relatively solid mantle.
Earth gravitationally interacts with other objects in space, especially the Sun and the Moon. During one orbit around the Sun, the Earth rotates about its own axis 366.26 times, creating 365.26 solar days, or one sidereal year. The Earth's axis of rotation is tilted 23.4° away from the perpendicular of its orbital plane, producing seasonal variations on the planet's surface with a period of one tropical year (365.24 solar days). The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. It began orbiting the Earth about 4.53 billion years ago (bya). The Moon's gravitational interaction with Earth stimulates ocean tides, stabilizes the axial tilt, and gradually slows the planet's rotation.

Romania (Listeni/roʊˈmeɪniə/ roh-MAY-nee-ə; Romanian: România [romɨˈni.a] ( listen)) is a unitary semi-presidential republic located in Southeastern-Central Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine. It also borders Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova. It covers 238,391 square kilometres (92,043 sq mi) and has a temperate-continental climate. With its 19.9 million inhabitants, it is the seventh most populous member of the European Union. Its capital and largest city, Bucharest, is the sixth largest city in the EU.
The Danube River, which is Europe's second longest river after the Volga, rises in Germany and flows southeastwards for a distance of 2857 km course through ten countries before emptying in Romania's Danube Delta. Some of its 1075 km length bordering the country drains the whole of it. The Carpathian Mountains (the tallest peak is Moldoveanu at 2544 m, 8346 ft) cross Romania from the north to the southwest.
Modern Romania emerged within the territories of the ancient Roman province of Dacia, and was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. At the end of World War I, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with the sovereign Kingdom of Romania. At the end of World War II, territories which today roughly correspond to the Republic of Moldova were occupied by the Soviet Union, and a few years later Romania became a socialist republic and member of the Warsaw Pact. After the 1989 Revolution, Romania began a transition back towards democracy and a capitalist market economy.
Following rapid economic growth in the 2000s, Romania has an economy predominantly based on services, and is a producer and net exporter of machines and electric energy, featuring companies like Automobile Dacia and OMV Petrom. Living standards have improved, and currently, Romania is an upper-middle income country with a high Human Development Index. It has been a member of NATO since 2004, and part of the European Union since 2007. Around 90% of the population identify themselves as Eastern Orthodox Christians, and are native speakers of Romanian, a Romance language. With a rich cultural history, Romania has been the home of influential artists, musicians, inventors and sportsmen, and features a variety of tourist attractions.

Earth Witness - Reflections of the Times & the Timeless
http://www.psbt.org/
Directed by Akanksha Joshi | 60 min. | 2011
Four common people – a teacher, a farmer, a shepherd, a father – find themselves on the front line of the earth’s biggest, most complex crisis: climate change. Their lives journey through the dark labyrinths of the multidimensional crisis, reflecting stories of our times – of trees, mining, monkeys, logging, rivers, seeds, waterfalls, flowers – and the spirit of the timeless.

Participants: Zdenka Badovinac, Director of Moderna galerija in Ljubljana (Slovenia), co-curator of Grammar of Freedom / Five Lessons; Luchezar Boyadjiev, artist, Bulgaria; Olga Egorova, artist, member of Chto delat group, Russia; Anatoly Osmolovsky, artist, Russia; Darinka Pop-Mitić, artist, Serbia; Bojana Piškur, co-curator of Grammar of Freedom / Five Lessons, curator at Moderna galerija; Igor Španjol, curator at Moderna galerija; Borut Vogelnik, artist, member of IRWIN group, Slovenia; Roman Uranjek, artist, member of IRWIN group, Slovenia.

Travel video about destination Bulgaria.
Bulgaria is located in the extreme south east of Europe, a country of natural splendour, fairy-tale like villages, ancient ruins, and monasteries with remarkable frescos as well as a culture that is between both Orient and Occident. Sofia, the ‘wise woman’ and, since 1879, capital of the new Bulgaria, a city whose roots date back to the fifth century B.C. Once Thracians settled, then followed Romans, Goths, Huns and Ottomans. At the end of the nineteenth century the city’s appearance changed from Oriental to European into a dynamic metropolis. Sofia’s historic city centre features the most splendid sacred building in the Balkan Peninsula, the Aleksandâr Nevski Cathedral, a work of art of the Russian Orthodox religion that can accommodate a congregation of more than five thousand.

Bulgaria Travel Video Guide. From wild, wooded mountain ranges speckled with remote villages and enchanting monasteries to vibrant modern cities and long sandy beaches hugging the Black Sea coast, Bulgaria rewards exploration.
Black Sea Beaches
It isn't hard to see why so many foreign -- and Bulgarian -- holidaymakers descend on the Black Sea coastline each summer. Bulgaria Travel Video GuideThe long, professionally maintained sandy beaches at the big resorts are the equal of some of the most popular Mediterranean destinations, and, if you just want to relax, top up your tan or try out some water sports, there's nowhere better. Away from the parasols and jet skis you'll find smaller, more traditional seaside towns ideal for young families, as well as ancient settlements with cobbled lanes, quaint wooden houses and long, fascinating histories. Even the coast's two big cities, Varna and Burgas, have attractive beaches within minutes of their busy urban hearts.

The Bulgarian coast is nowadays awakening from its long sleep. On its two greatest holiday areas, the Golden Sand and the Sunny Coast, several hundred new, high quality hotels were built, their malls, restaurants and night clubs are of European quality, while its beaches were awarded by the European Union’s blue flag.
