Cycling, also called bicycling or biking, is the use of bicycles for transport, recreation, or for sport. Persons engaged in cycling are cyclists or bicyclists. Apart from ordinary two-wheeled bicycles, cycling also includes riding unicycles, tricycles, quadracycles, and other similar human-powered vehicles (HPVs).
Bicycles were introduced in the 19th century and now number about one billion worldwide. They are the principal means of transportation in many regions.
Cycling is a very efficient and effective mode of transportation optimal for short to moderate distances. Bicycles provide numerous benefits compared to motor vehicles, including exercise, an alternative to the use of fossil fuels, no air or noise pollution, much reduced traffic congestion, easier parking, greater maneuverability, and access to both roads and paths. The advantages are at less financial cost to the user as well as society (negligible damage to roads, and less pavement required). Criticisms and disadvantages of cycling include reduced protection in crashes, particularly with motor vehicles, longer travel time (except in densely populated areas), vulnerability to weather conditions, difficulty in transporting passengers, and the skill and fitness required.

Who has the lightest bike, who has the heaviest bike, and, what is the average bike weight in the pro peloton? We set out to find out at stage 1 of the Abu Dhabi Tour. With a minimum weight limit of 6.8kg per bike, teams and mechanics are often forced to weigh their bikes down rather than use the lightest components available. We did a quick poll at the Abu Dhabi Tour to find out the range of bike weights in the pro peloton, the team with the lightest bikes, the team with the heaviest bikes and, the average weight of a pro bike.

Professional cyclists rarely think consciously about pedalling in circles, and neither should you - your natural pedal stroke is probably the best.
Where the pros have the edge is a well-developed flexibility, allowing their muscles to move freely through the full pedalling range. Regular stretching will go some way to giving you that flexibility too.
Cadence drills can help maintain your efficiency even when churning up hills, and even thinking about saving energy by keeping your upper body steady will help in the long run.

We caught up with MTN-Qhubeka (riding their first Tour de France) and ENVE Composites (sponsoring their first major pro team) because we really wanted to find out how teams make equipment choices and how sponsors choose which teams to support. Do they take money and kit from the highest bidder? Do they consult the riders? Or, do they analyse each component individually and look for marginal gains? Who has the lightest bike, who has the heaviest bike, and, what is the average bike weight in the pro peloton? We set out to find out at stage 1 of the Abu Dhabi Tour.

Bike weight is a contentious subject in road racing. With a minimum weight limit of 6.8kg per bike, teams and mechanics are often forced to weigh their bikes down rather than use the lightest components available.
We did a quick poll at the Abu Dhabi Tour to find out the range of bike weights in the pro peloton, the team with the lightest bikes, the team with the heaviest bikes and, the average weight of a pro bike...
Of course, all of these are rough figures, but we've seen teams using these scales before UCI bike checks, so we'd stand by both the range and the averages.

This little-known ride is a gem. It has rough edges! One of the hardest short rides I know. But well worth it, considering the views of lakes, basins, and city-scapes. It's on my top ten list of favorite bike rides.
Because of the length, you can fast-forward through many parts. The harrowing descent occurs in the last 20 minutes or so (don't feel guilty if you just go there and bump the viewing speed).

I had a request to do a post spinning and post cycling yoga class, so here it is! This class is a Vinyasa Flow but focuses more on stretching rather than strengthening. We will be looking at opening the quads, hamstrings, hips and lower back. I won't be using any props for this practice but some of you might find a strap beneficial, especially for the quad stretches!
