A tour of Christchurch Cathedral will reveal its origins. In 1038, King Sitric Silkenbeard, then the Viking king of Dublin, founded a church where the cathedral now stands. Silkenbeard was also known as a patron of the arts. The cathedral itself was originally constructed from wood, but during the 1180s it was rebuilt and expanded in stone by the Anglo-Normans. The cathedral has since undergone numerous changes and additional expansions over the centuries. Christchurch Cathedral sightseeing should include a look at the building’s 19 bells, many of which date back to the 18th century. Visitors should also make it a point to visit the crypt. Full of fascinating carvings and memorabilia, it also holds a stockade once used for punishing criminals. Don’t worry—no one actually gets put into it anymore.
