A look at the newly refurbished Manchester Victoria Railway Station on the afternoon of Sunday 30th August 2015.
Victoria is one of the 2 main railway stations in Manchester (the other being Piccadilly) and serves destinations in Lancashire and Yorkshire such as Blackpool, Southport, Wigan, Rochdale, Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Liverpool and Kirkby provided by Northern Rail. In addition, the station is served by the First Transpennine Express service running between Newcastle and Liverpool.
The station has 6 platforms. The 4 through platforms are located underneath the MEN Arena and are part of a rebuild that took place in the early 1990s. The remaining 2 are terminal platforms and are located on the side of the station which dates back to the 1900s. This side also has the platforms for the Manchester Metrolink system. This side of the station has undergone a major refurbishment which included a new roof.

During this era of BBC1, each region of the UK would transmit a junction between each programme, either out of vision or in vision, giving details of later programmes and the one about to be transmitted. Also, BBC1 used to close down each night and just prior to closedown the regions would transmit a late night news bulletin, play The Queen, and then remind everyone to switch their TVs off.
The junctions and closedown by the English regions ended on Friday 12 September 1980 - London did all the junctions and closed down the channel at night from then on for the English regions, however Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales continued their own junctions and closedown - and here we have the final North West region transmission from BBC Studio P, Broadcasting House, Manchester, where the junctions and closedown came from.
Studio P was a self op. studio located on the 4th floor of BH, amongst radio studios from the 1920s, when the upper floors of the building changed from being a bank to becoming BH Manchester for the BBC's north west region's radio programmes.
Studio P had one camera, a desk in front of the presenter with various sources coming in (TK, VT, slide scanner, etc) and was about a third the size of a normal-sized living room. The presenter self-operated the cutting to the various sources and you'll see John Mundy's arms move at some point to do this. The slides also show the desk.
The clip is all pretty well self-explanatory, and the slide sequence will give a good idea of the operating conditions. The camera used to be an EMI 2001 but this was moved to Studio N eventually and a cobbled together Philips LDK15 handheld camera used, with a film lens. The quality was never very good with this camera and to make matters worse there was an autocue in front of it too. That's why the camera output in this clip looks so soft and the black level sat up. I did try post-processing the clip but couldn't really get anything out of it to make it sharper....
Finally.... one of the cameramen rota'd to work in Studio N for the day had to check the camera in the afternoon for the correct shot, to make sure it hadn't been knocked, and so it became common to hear 'I'm going to P!'.

Manchester 
i/ˈmæntʃɛstər/ is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England with an estimated population of 498,800 in 2010. Manchester lies within one of the United Kingdom's largest urban areas; the Greater Manchester Urban Area which has a population of 2.2 million. The demonym of Manchester is Mancunian and the local authority is Manchester City Council.
Manchester is situated in the south-central part of North West England, fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south and the Pennines to the north and east. The recorded history of Manchester began with the civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium, which was established in c. 79 AD on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. Historically, most of the city was a part of Lancashire, although areas south of the River Mersey were in Cheshire. Throughout the Middle Ages Manchester remained a manorial township, but it began to expand "at an astonishing rate" around the turn of the 19th century. Manchester's unplanned urbanisation was brought on by a boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution, and resulted in it becoming the world's first industrialised city. An early 19th-century factory building boom transformed Manchester from a township into a major mill town and borough that was granted city status in 1853. In 1894 the Manchester Ship Canal was built, creating the Port of Manchester.

Victoria is one of the 2 main railway stations in Manchester (the other being Piccadilly) and serves destinations in Lancashire and Yorkshire such as Blackpool, Southport, Wigan, Rochdale, Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Liverpool and Kirkby provided by Northern Rail. In addition, the station is served by the First Transpennine Express service running between Newcastle and Liverpool. The station has 6 platforms. The 4 through platforms are located underneath the MEN Arena and are part of a rebuild that took place in the early 1990s. The remaining 2 are terminal platforms and are located on the side of the station which dates back to the 1900s. This side also has the platform... -

Also, BBC1 used to close down each night and just prior to closedown the regions would transmit a late night news bulletin, play The Queen, and then remind everyone to switch their TVs off. And so we turn the clock back to November 2011, and after 4 years of working for the regional operator Northern Rail, the Class 180 Adelante units finally bowed out of service so they could be returned to their original operator First Great Western. The Class 180's were built by Alstom in 2001 as a supplement to the existing HST fleet on the London to Bristol, Cardiff and occasionally Exeter services. However, reliability problems resulted in these units being sold off in late 2007 to be used by other operators. Grand Central and Hull Trains bought several sets for their East Coast Mainline operations, whilst 5 sets were leased from Angel Trains to National Express East Coast. During this era of BBC1, each region of the UK would transmit a junction between each programme, either out of vision or in vision, giving details of later programmes and the one about to be transmitted. Also, BBC1 used to close down each night and just prior to closedown the regions would transmit a late night news bulletin, play The Queen, and then remind everyone to switch their TVs off.
The junctions and closedown by the English regions ended on Friday 12 September 1980 - London did all the junctions and closed down the channel at night from then on for the English regions, however Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales continued their own junctions and closedown - and here we have the final North West region transmission from BBC Studio P, Broadcasting House, Manchester, where the junctions and closedown came from.
Studio P was a self op. studio located on the 4th floor of BH, amongst radio studios from the 1920s, when the upper floors of the building changed from being a bank to becoming BH Manchester for the BBC's north west region's radio programmes.
Studio P had one camera, a desk in front of the presenter with various sources coming in (TK, VT, slide scanner, etc) and was about a third the size of a normal-sized living room. The presenter self-operated the cutting to the various sources and you'll see John Mundy's arms move at some point to do this. The slides also show the desk.
The clip is all pretty well self-explanatory, and the slide sequence will give a good idea of the operating conditions. The camera used to be an EMI 2001 but this was moved to Studio N eventually and a cobbled together Philips LDK15 handheld camera used, with a film lens. The quality was never very good with this camera and to make matters worse there was an autocue in front of it too. That's why the camera output in this clip looks so soft and the black level sat up. I did try post-processing the clip but couldn't really get anything out of it to make it sharper....
Finally.... one of the cameramen rota'd to work in Studio N for the day had to check the camera in the afternoon for the correct shot, to make sure it hadn't been knocked, and so it became common to hear 'I'm going to P!'.

And so we turn the clock back to November 2011, and after 4 years of working for the regional operator Northern Rail, the Class 180 Adelante units finally bowed...
And so we turn the clock back to November 2011, and after 4 years of working for the regional operator Northern Rail, the Class 180 Adelante units finally bowed out of service so they could be returned to their original operator First Great Western. The Class 180's were built by Alstom in 2001 as a supplement to the existing HST fleet on the London to Bristol, Cardiff and occasionally Exeter services. However, reliability problems resulted in these units being sold off in late 2007 to be used by other operators. Grand Central and Hull Trains bought several sets for their East Coast Mainline operations, whilst 5 sets were leased from Angel Trains to National Express East Coast. The operator never began operations with the units and so 3 sets were leased to Northern Rail to run services between Blackpool North, Manchester Victoria and Hazel Grove.
On this particular day, we take a ride aboard 180103 as it runs one of its last turns of duty on the Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service, being withdrawn just two days later and returning south over the following weekend:
1. The unit looks rather out of place at Preston station as it arrives in the lightly modified First Great Western 'Barbie' livery, the pink being replaced by purple in accordance to Northern Rail's brand.
2. Inside, the still un-refurbished First Great Western interior that these units adorned back in 2001, still present here, but now replaced by the 'Bucket Seat' style of the new FGW image.
3. We depart Preston's Platform 2 and head south over the River Ribble on the Up Slow.
4. A few minutes later we depart Leyland, formerly a large station with an overall roof, but now reduced to four open platforms with modern day shelters, a majority of the platform length being left to nature as the length of trains decreased over the years.
5. As we climb out of Leyland a Freightliner Class 66 is seen speeding north with a rake of empty coal hoppers bound for Carlisle Kingmoor.
6. Not long afterwards we cross Euxton Junction and take the route towards Bolton and Manchester, the West Coast Mainline continuing south towards Wigan.
7. Shortly afterwards we arrive at the then newly opened Buckshaw Parkway, which opened to passengers on the 3rd October 2011 as a vital new link to the rapidly expanding urban area.
8. After Blackrod, we pass through the rolling hills near Horwich Parkway as we approach the Victorian urban sprawl that is the Greater Manchester area.
9. We then arrive at Bolton, the largest town on the route. The station was opened in 1838 by the Manchester and Bolton Railway and was originally named Bolton Trinity Street until the closure of Bolton's second station 'Great Moor' in 1954. Today the station is a major interchange between buses and trains, with connections to a wider variety of services in the north Manchester area.
10. We then speed down the route of the Bolton and Manchester Railway, as we converge on Salford.
11. With the high rise towers of Manchester City Centre forming the skyline, we arrive at Salford Central. The station was once made up of 4 platforms but now only 2 are in use.
12. As we depart Salford Central, we find ourselves running alongside a Northern Rail Class 150/1 on a train from Liverpool Lime Street via Newton Le Willows.
13. As we make our final approach into Manchester Victoria, the site of the former London and North Western Railway built Manchester Exchange station can be seen where the Class 142 Pacer is parked. Built in competition with the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway's Victoria Station, the two were physically connected by what was once the longest platform on the British Rail network. Today, the former trackbed of the station is used for the storing of Northern owned units.
14. And finally we arrive at Manchester Victoria, now plunged into darkness with the construction of the Manchester Arena now built over the original trainshed. And thus we leave our faithful Adelante, its work now replaced by a mixture of Class 150's and Class 156's.

Housed in a restored Edwardian pump house is The People’s History Museum, which celebrates those who challenged Britain’s rigid political and class systems. The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.

A smart city is defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.

Today we are travelling from London to Manchester airport, watch us as we take our huge suitcases across England to our hotel The Bewley hotel at Manchester airport, we meet up with Anthony who is joining us on this adventure.
Later on we go into Manchester city centre for some dinner and to keep up with our trip to America we go to Red's True barbecue restaurant which serves BBQ food that is smoked in house.

Today we are travelling from London to Manchester airport, watch us as we take our huge suitcases across England to our hotel The Bewley hotel at Manchester airport, we meet up with Anthony who is joining us on this adventure.
Later on we go into Manchester city centre for some dinner and to keep up with our trip to America we go to Red's True barbecue restaurant which serves BBQ food that is smoked in house.

We then wake up the next morning very early as it is departure day to Orlando. We check in through the virgin premium check in desk and head through security and straight to our departure gate where we experience the V-room and try out the all you can eat breakfast buffet.

The guest loco for the gala would have been 46233 Duchess of Sutherland but unfortunately she could not make it due to gauging issues in Manchester and the lack of crews from DB Cargo to get her to the railway. The hope for a 7 loco ended up to be a 5 loco event following resident saddle tank 132 Sapper was also not available. Euston - Crewe - Manchester: Pendolino - December 2011
London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly via Crewe on the 14::40 Virgin Trains Euston to Piccadilly on Thursday 15th December 2011, in 1st class. Crewe is the first stop, followed by Wilmslow and Stockport. Exactly 21 years - to the day - since I filmed a trip from Euston to Crewe. Then, as a teenager, I filmed a trip on a Class 90-hauled Inter-City train, with Mk 3 coaches (that trip on the 16::40 from Euston to Crewe on 15th December 1990 is also on YouTube). This time, post-privatisation, it's a Virgin Pendolino EMU for the journey. Unlike the 1990 film, most of this trip was filmed in daylight (start time 2 hours earlier) with night only setting in at Crewe, so more of the southern half of the West Coast Main Line can be seen. Hello & Welcome to Harnetty Railways
Coming up
We visit the East Lancashire Railway during there Spring Steam Gala on the Saturday of the event.
The guest loco for the gala would have been 46233 Duchess of Sutherland but unfortunately she could not make it due to gauging issues in Manchester and the lack of crews from DB Cargo to get her to the railway.
The hope for a 7 loco ended up to be a 5 loco event following resident saddle tank 132 Sapper was also not available.
We start at Bury Bolton Street were we see Ian Riley's 44871 arriving from the depot with the stock to head off to Rawtenstall to form the 1st of the day there.
We next see arriving from the sheds was Keighley & Worth Valley Rly based 34092 City of Wells arriving to form 9.30am departure to Rawtenstall.
We join the 9.20am departure behind Fowler crab 13065 on the 1st train of the day from Bury Bolton Street.
Soon we arrived at Heywood were we see the crab run round her train from here the full part from Heywood to Bury was filmed were we change trains to join 44871's train for the run to heywood this time film the full part of the Bury to Heywood with 44871 facing towards Castleton.
Soon we arrived back at Heywood were we see 44871 run round before we rejoin the train for the run back to Bury from were we do the Bury to Heywood round trip 1 last time in this video behind 34092 City of Wells.
This time from Heywood we go all the way to Rawtenstall with 34092 once at Bury there was a 25 min wait over which gave us the chance to see 32 Gothenburg depart with the shuttle service to Ramsbottom.
We re-join 34092's train for the 12.30pm to Rawtenstall from here the bullied was join by 13065 for the double heading run from Bury.
The 2 went magnificently during the run especially on departures from stations. Soon we arrived at Rawtenstall were 13065 ran round to do the top & tail back to Bury we stayed on the train as far as Ramsbottom were we join Midland Railway Centre based Standard 4 80080 for the run back to Rawtenstall.
Once back at Rawtenstall we traveled all the way back to Bury were we had an hour layover. We see 44871 take over from 80080 to take the train onto Heywood and see the train leave seconds later we see 32 Gothenberg arrive with the freight train only to find out that 32 was having problems and was withdrawn for the rest of the day 80080 tuck over the rest of 32's jobs.
We join 80080 for the non-stop shuttle to Ramsbottom were we have our last train change 44871 arriving with the 15.50pm train from Heywood.
From Rawtenstall we film the final train of the day from there all the way back to Bury were finally we see 44871 depart with the empty stock back to the depot.
A great day at the East Lancashire Railway the steam was great lets hope for guest locos in the October Steam Gala in The Autumn.

London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly via Crewe on the 14::40 Virgin Trains Euston to Piccadilly on Thursday 15th December 2011, in 1st class. Crewe is the first stop, followed by Wilmslow and Stockport. Exactly 21 years - to the day - since I filmed a trip from Euston to Crewe. Then, as a teenager, I filmed a trip on a Class 90-hauled Inter-City train, with Mk 3 coaches (that trip on the 16::40 from Euston to Crewe on 15th December 1990 is also on YouTube). This time, post-privatisation, it's a Virgin Pendolino EMU for the journey. Unlike the 1990 film, most of this trip was filmed in daylight (start time 2 hours earlier) with night only setting in at Crewe, so more of the southern half of the West Coast Main Line can be seen. This route to Manchester utilises more of the WCML itself than the route via Stoke-on-Trent, which branches off before Stafford and the lesser-used route via Stone and Macclesfield which branches off just after Stafford. Filmed in full HD 1080p.

We start at Manchester Victoria were we see Ian Riley's 44871 heading home on the 5Z39 Blackburn to Bury ELR running a few mins late past the station whistling by as he did so thanks his crew for the whistle.
With 44871 now gone we head off to The East Lancashire Railway for a brief visit during there Green Timetable operations during February Half Term.
Locos running today were War Department saddle tank 132 Sapper that was running the passenger services while Fowler Crab 13065 was on Footplate Experience Duties.
We join 132 on the 13.00pm departure from Bury Bolton Street for the Rawtenstall.
Sure enough we arrived at Rawtenstall after a gd run. Soon we head back to Bury.
Our final sequences are at Bury Bolton Street were we see 132 Sapper run round and departure with the final round trip of the day.
