From the Gulf of Mexico’s dead zone to the Des Moines Waterworks lawsuit against drainage districts, water quality challenges are growing and the Farm Bill’s conservation programs are helping farmers in their efforts to reduce nutrient loss. The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) held a briefing examining these water quality challenges and how stakeholders are partnering to implement effective, voluntary, farm-level conservation practices that will provide multiple benefits both to rural and urban areas.

Question & Answer Session
https://youtu.be/k_69ymR3YB4?t=1h11m42s
The discussion highlighted Farm Bill conservation policies in action, which are helping advance best management practices that improve drinking water quality and farmers' bottom lines by enhancing in-field nutrient management. Farmers know that conserving nutrients makes both economic and environmental sense, but substantial work remains to achieve the widespread adoption necessary to address water quality and stave off regulation.
Ongoing water quality issues, such as phosphorus-driven, harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie and high nitrate levels in municipal drinking water in the Midwest, are bringing heightened attention to the nutrient loss challenge for water utilities and farmers. The 2014 Farm Bill’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) is demonstrating how farmers can partner with interested parties (commodity groups, NGO’s, agribusinesses, etc.) to further the adoption of these voluntary best management practices addressing the critical issue of water quality. RCPP encourages partnerships between agricultural producers and stakeholders to address regional problems while maintaining or improving agricultural productivity.
The discussion showcased efforts by farmers and their allied organizations and businesses to implement RCPP in modern commercial farming operations. For instance, they are adapting precision agricultural technology tools and field-level data to help analyze and understand nutrient loss and conservation practices so as to improve farm and field management.
Administered by the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), RCPP has $1.2 billion in federal funding, with USDA partners providing matching funds for a total of $2.8 billion through 2018. RCPP combines and reinforces four pre-existing NRCS conservation programs.

On my travels in virtually every Hotel, Bar, Leisure Club, office, and factory I see huge opportunity for reducing water volume I really do not think businesses realise the true cost of water and the impact it has on water bills on the business.
In this instance the flow rate of the shower is so high that the water cannot escape down the plug hole fast enough!
By replacing the shower head with a water saving shower wit a flow rate of 8Litres per minute the water through the shower would be reduced by at least 80% and don't forget the gas used to heat the water!

Hi, everybody. Our country is home to some of the most beautiful God-given landscapes in the world. We’re blessed with natural treasures – from the Grand Tetons to the Grand Canyon; from lush forests and vast deserts to lakes and rivers teeming with wildlife. And it’s our responsibility to protect these treasures for future generations, just as previous generations protected them for us.
Since taking office, I’ve set aside more than 260 million acres of public lands and waters – more than any President in history. Last month, we announced that 11 states had come together with ranchers, and industry groups to protect a threatened species – the sage grouse – without jeopardizing local economies. Two weeks ago, we announced that we’re creating one new marine sanctuary on the Potomac River in Maryland, and another along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin – part of unprecedented efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay and the Great Lakes. We also joined a coalition of countries cracking down on illegal fishing that threatens jobs and food security around the globe. And I’m going to keep protecting the places that make America special, and the livelihoods of those who depend on them.
We’ll also keep doing what we can to prevent the worst effects of climate change before it’s too late. Over the past six years, we’ve led by example, generating more clean energy and lowering our carbon emissions. Our businesses have stepped up in a big way, including just this past week. Some of our biggest companies made new commitments to act on climate – not just because it’s good for the planet, but because it’s good for their bottom line.
This is how America is leading on the environment. And because America is leading by example, 150 countries, representing over 85% of global emissions, have now laid out plans to reduce their levels of the harmful carbon pollution that warms our planet. And it gives us great momentum going into Paris this December, where the world needs to come together and build on these individual commitments with an ambitious, long-term agreement to protect this Earth for our kids.
Now Congress has to do its job. This month, even as Republicans in Congress barely managed to keep our government open, they shut down something called the Land and Water Conservation Fund. For more than half a century, this fund has protected more than 5 million acres of land – from playgrounds to parks to priceless landscapes – all without costing taxpayers a dime. Nearly every single county in America has benefited from this program. It has bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. Republicans in Congress should reauthorize and fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund without delay.
After all, as Pope Francis reminds us so eloquently, this planet is a gift from God – and our common home. We should leave it to our kids in better shape than we found it.
Thanks, and have a great weekend.
wn.com/Obama Gop Threatening Environment By Blocking Land Water Conservation Fund
Transcript:

Webinar Presented as part of ELA "A Focus on Sustainability" series on May 5, 2015. www.ecolandscaping.org
Each year millions of dollars are spent on designing, building, and maintaining landscapes that use too many unsustainable resources and rely on unsustainable practices. There is little thought given to water conservation in traditional landscape design and the result is a continuing depletion of our water resources. Gary Krause is committed to landscapes designed with water conservation in mind. As drought conditions become the norm in many parts of the country, the need for water-conscious landscape design becomes more critical. This presentation will address many water conservation techniques including plant choices, material selection, and irrigation options. With careful planning, landscape designs can provide alternatives to our clients and create sustainable landscapes that are both beautiful and water-conscious.
Gary Krause holds a degree in design and maintains a wide range of certifications including permeable pavers, drainage systems, rainwater harvesting, and is a Certified Sustainable Landscaper. Gary has over 30 years’ experience in gardening, landscape design, construction, and maintenance. Gary believes that the future for sustainable landscapes is very promising thanks to all of the new technology in plant genetics, ‘Smart Water’ irrigation products, and other water-conserving innovations.
This presentation is part of the Webinar Series "A Focus on Sustainability" prepared for landscape professionals and the public. The series is being presented through collaboration of the Ecological Landscape Alliance (ELA), the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council (CCLC), the Midwest Ecological Landscape Alliance (MELA), & EcoLandscape California (ELC). Known regionally for their quality education programs, these organizations are working cooperatively to share knowledge and encourage conversations with landscape professionals from around the country and the globe.

Lakeland Currents host Ray Gildow welcomes Todd Holman from the Mississippi Headwaters division of the Nature Conservancy, and Dan Steward from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. Our water resources in the central and northern lakes area of MN appear abundant and of excellent quality. Unfortunately all is not what it may seem. Significant land conversion is taking place that likely will and in some cases has affected both our ground and surface water. In the last five years Minnesota has been ranked second highest in forest and perennial cover conversion to agriculture. Model data suggests significant changes to phosphorus and nitrogen loading as a result of drastic land use changes. The Mississippi Headwaters region represents not only the economic engine fueled by tourism, technology and timber, but also supplies the source water to water dependent communities locally and in the greater metropolitan area. So what do we do with that awareness? What do we protect? How much do we need to protect in order to achieve river, lake and stream resilience? How do we implement measured protection and who might the stakeholders be? These are all great questions that we will explore and offer suggestions from a private conservation non-profit perspective and a state board/agency practitioner perspective.

2015 Defeat the Drought Water Conservation Expo
With recent statewide water restrictions and the approaching dry summer months, California residents must identify the most effective ways to reduce their water usage at home. To address this need, Assembly member Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) and the City of Thousand Oaks hosted a water conservation exposition that included speakers, drought experts, and a workshop series. Throughout the day, residents visited vendor booths, attended workshops and talked with experts who explained the facts about the drought and gave creative ideas to help with your conservation plans. Attendees had full access to prominent local businesses specializing in landscaping, artificial turf installation, drought tolerant plants, architecture and design, greywater management, indoor retrofitting and more.
The event featured local vendors, as well as hourly indoor workshops on topics that included:
Drought Education and Local Update from Calleguas Water District
50 Shades of Greywater Management
Turning Your “Lawn” into “GONE!” (Turf Removal and Native Plant Landscaping)
Biochar Irrigation

Attendees had full access to prominent local businesses specializing in landscaping, artificial turf installation, drought tolerant plants, architecture and design, greywater management, indoor retrofitting and more.
The event featured local vendors, as well as hourly indoor workshops on topics that included:
Drought Education and Local Update from Calleguas Water District
50 Shades of Greywater Management
Turning Your “Lawn” into “GONE!” (Turf Removal and Native Plant Landscaping)
Biochar Irrigation
Household Fixes to Keep Money from going Down the Drain!
How to Work With Your Homeowners Association to Conserve
