'Islamic site'? Thousands of Jews pray at Rachel's Tomb Rachel's Tomb (Hebrew: קבר רחל‎ translit. Kever Rakhel), (Arabic: قبر راحيل‎),[1] is the site revered as the burial place of the Hebrew matriarch Rachel. The tomb, located at the northern entrance of Bethlehem, is considered holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Since the 1990s[2] the site has been referred to by Muslims as the Bilal bin Rabah mosque (Arabic: مسجد بلال بن رباح‎).[3][4] The burial place of the matriarch Rachel as mentioned in the Jewish Tanach and Christian Old Testament, and in Muslim literature[5] is contested between this site and several others to the north — though this site is by far the most recognized candidate.[6] The earliest extra-biblical records describing this tomb as Rachel's burial place date to the first decades of the 4th century CE. The structure in its current form dates from the Ottoman period, and there is an Ottoman-period cemetery near the site.[7] When Sir Moses Montefiore renovated the site in 1841 and gave the keys to the Jewish community, he also added an antechamber including a mihrab for Muslim prayer to as conciliation.[8][9] According to the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, the tomb was to be part of the internationally administered zone of Jerusalem, but the area was occupied by The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which prohibited Jews from entering the area. Though not initially falling within Area C, the site has come under the control of the Israeli Ministry of Religious Affairs.[10] Rachel's tomb is the third holiest site in Judaism.[11] Jews have made pilgrimage to the tomb since ancient times,[12] and it has become one of the cornerstones of Jewish-Israeli identity.

It also condemned the “aggression and illegal measures taken against the freedom of worship and access of Muslims to Al-Aqsa Mosque and Israel’s attempts to break the status quo since 1967.” Twenty-six UNESCO representatives voted in favor of the resolution, six voted against, and twenty-five abstained. The United States, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Estonia opposed the resolution. The resolution also recognized Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem and the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron as Muslim sites. The vote came hours after the Arab states withdrew their demand that UNESCO declare the Western Wall an “integral part” of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.In an effort to garner support for the motion, some of the most incendiary language was removed or exchanged for less provocative terms.All references to Jerusalem as “the occupied capital of Palestine” were withdrawn from the draft, as was a call for the international community to condemn Israel for urging “civilians to carry weapons whenever they leave their homes.”Palestinians allege that a wave of Palestinian attacks in recent weeks against Israeli civilians and security personnel stems from Israel’s attempts to change the arrangements at the Temple Mount, where Jews are allowed to visit but not pray. Israel has repeatedly denied the allegations.The UK voted against the new resolution, despite the Palestinians’ removal of the most controversial segment. “The language is unacceptable, and we don’t think it’s helpful to bring in a provocative motion at times of tensions,” a British official said. “We regret that there wasn’t more time to discuss the motion.”On Tuesday, the head of UNESCO said she “deplored” the proposal. The move, Irina Bokova warned on the agency’s website, “could be seen to alter the status of the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls and incite further tensions.”The executive board had been scheduled to vote Tuesday on the resolution, but Bokova postponed the vote until Wednesday. Wide of protestors STORYLINE: Protestors from a left wing Israeli group gathered at Rachel's Tomb near Bethlehem on Wednesday ahead of Madonna's expected visit to Israel and the West Bank. Protestors said they wanted to make Madonna aware of the political situation on the ground ahead of her visit to Rachel's Tomb, the traditional burial place of the biblical matriarch in the West Bank town of Bethlehem. Madonna, a student of Jewish mysticism, was due to arrive in Israel for the Jewish New Year, which begins at sundown on Wednesday. Israelis have reacted with a mix of excitement, bewilderment and anger to the five-day visit, which will include trips to graves of rabbinical sages. Madonna isn't Jewish, but has taken an interest in Kabbalah,or Jewish mysticism, in recent years. She has adopted the Hebrew name Esther, wears a red thread on her wrist to ward off the evil eye, and reportedly refuses to perform on the Jewish Sabbath. She has also incorporated Jewish symbols into some of her music videos, to the consternation of many religious leaders. The organisation hosting her in Israel ordered news reporters to wear white clothes and not to take notes when covering Madonna's appearances during the New Year's holiday, or Rosh Hashanah. This is a non-professional sketch of my great opportunity visit to the near holiest places of ours, Jews: Mearath Machpelah (cave of Machpelah ) - place of burying of Avraham&Sarah;, Yitzсhak&Rivkah;, Jacob&Leah; (in Hebron) and Kever Rachel (Rachel's tomb) that is placed near Beith-Lechem. At the very beginning of the video it's could to see the fence along the road from Jerusalem to Hebron. Some scenes are taken inside (near the entrance) and outside of the buiding, covering chambers of Patriarchs' burying places. In the mid fragment the Gutnik Center in Hebron and the neighbour street are pictured. The final fragment shows the prayer at the Rachel's tomb synagogue.
